One of a Kind

Everyone who comes to Las Vegas has a goal in mind. For some, it’s to practice their online poker skills at a table; for others, it’s to see some of their favorite performers live; for others, it’s to have a meal at a restaurant they’ve seen featured on reality television; but for some, the goal is to experience something truly unique, something that has that “only in Vegas” feel to it.

If that certain someone happens to be you, this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine will be of great use. We’ve featured not one, but two experiences you simply won’t fi nd anywhere else.

We start with The Cabinet of Curiosities at Horseshoe Las Vegas (“Go on a Cocktail Adventure,” p. 34). It’s a bar, yes, but as you’ll discover upon entering, it’s so much more, from the knickknacks on shelves, each with its own backstory, to a speakeasy that requires some puzzle-solving to enter. And with the addition of a new class for budding mixologists, this is a destination no connoisseur of spirits should miss.

Next up, fans of interactive entertainment will fall in love with the sublime Particle Ink at Luxor, which uses a combination of technologies to create a world unlike anything you’ve ever seen before (“Drawn Discoveries,” p. 14).

Hitting the town tonight? Stop by your concierge to pick up a copy of our sister publication, VEGAS2GO.

And we’ve only scratched the surface of what you’ll fi nd in this week’s issue, from the return of two of the biggest residencies currently in Las Vegas, Donny Osmond at Harrah’s Las Vegas (“Brilliant Career,” p. 32) and Shania Twain at Planet Hollywood (“Giddy Up!” p. 12) to the arrival of Twenty One Pilots to MGM Grand (“Flight Plans,” p. 38) and a performance by Kevin Hart, along with some very special guests, as part of Hartbeat Weekend at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Laughter and So Much More,” p. 17 ).

May your Vegas experience be as unique as you.

Giddy Up!

Canadian country star’s residency is a visual and audio feast

Shania Twain has been up to some neat stuff since her last set of shows back in May. As summer rolled by, the pop-country singer released not one, not two, but three unique collaborations.

The icon, who resumed her Come On Over residency last week and continues this week with dates Aug. 29, 31 and Sept. 1, started the season strong with the June release of “White Claw,” a collaboration with comedic hip-hop and rap artist Yung Gravy. Later came the July release of a party-country banger, “Boots Don’t,” with artist BRELAND, and that same month saw a reimagined version of Twain’s 1997 hit “From This Moment On” as a duet with classical music’s finest, Andrea Bocelli.

There’s no confirming whether Twain will decide to play a few of her new tunes when she takes over PH Live next, but just the possibility that you’d hear these fresh releases live should be more than enough reason to score some seats, though there’s so much more to be excited about. After all, this isn’t the first time the Queen of Country Pop has performed on the Strip (her Las Vegas residency dates go as far back as 2012), and she’s had plenty of time to perfect her production shows here. The most recent iteration, indeed, feels like an encapsulation of everything that came before, yet feels extremely fresh and different at the same time.

The elaborate set morphs into an abstract background, near-complete blackness, the Las Vegas Strip and the Twain Town Saloon, making this show not just something you need to hear but also see. Each setting comes with new songs and vibes, plus opportunity for the country legend to interact with enthusiastic fans.

Of course, audiences can come prepared to belt their hearts out to “You’re Still the One” and “Forever and For Always.” Naturally, this set list also includes plenty of dance-worthy tunes, so throw on some comfy kicks and move and groove to the artist’s top hits like “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” –Em Jurbala

Drawn Discoveries

Explore a parallel dimension while defeating evil at this self-guided experience

Step into an alternate universe when you stop into the House of Shattered Prisms (head up to the Atrium level of Luxor by escalator and it’s just on your right) and explore the fantastical world of Particle Ink , an immersive experience that’s taken over the space formerly known as Luxor’s wedding chapel. You’ll meet some new friends, travel through the 2.5th dimension and defeat some lurking foes as a helpful “3D” to the story’s hand-drawn, two-dimensional protagonists.

Particle Ink provides two ways to engage with its fascinating setting: via the daytime, self-guided Wanderlust experience; or with a live cast of performers during its evening showings. This makes the dual-purpose attraction the perfect stop for just about anyone, especially during the Wanderlust experience, which is open to 3Ds as young as 4 years old and comes with many opportunities for interaction.

The attraction uses some augmented reality elements to ensure you fully explore each space. To do that, visitors can download an app or check out an iPad at the beginning of

the exhibit, which is free and highly recommended. While a bit clunkier to hold and move around with, having the larger screen allows guests to see the level of detail that’s been put into each hologram-like encounter. Plus, that means phones are free for the numerous photo ops here! Each ornately decorated room presents new experiences to be had. One moment, 3Ds must defeat evil rivals in a creepy, disheveled bathroom; the next, cooperative explorers can use weapons of mass creation to take down opponents in the main space. There are even a few minigames to play along the way.

As you move from room to room, make sure you pick up the gold-framed mirrors strewn throughout the fantasy land to take little peeks at the adorable inhabitants of the 2.5th dimension. Take part in creation all around this experience by drawing with chalk on the steps of the obelisk room, spray-painting the walls with light-mapping paint cans or doodling on some pressure-sensitive stars in the bedroom. –Em Jurbala

Laughter and So Much More

Comedian brings back popular entertainment event to the Strip

A Kevin Hart show is reason enough to head to Resorts World Las Vegas this week, but it’s just the beginning of the fun. Hart and his global entertainment company, Hartbeat, are bringing back Hartbeat Weekend, a four-day, jampacked entertainment extravaganza, to the property from Aug. 29-Sept. 1.

“Hartbeat Weekend celebrates the absolute best in comedy, culture, and music,” said Hart in a press statement. “This year, we’re taking the event to new heights, and I can’t wait for everyone to

join us for a weekend filled with laughter, entertainment, and unforgettable moments.”

Hart, a globally successful comedy phenomenon whose achievements include movies, comedy specials, streaming shows and much more, brings his Acting My Age Tour to Resorts World Theatre on Sept. 1, but throughout the weekend, the star also plans to film half-hour specials as part of a new series, LOL Live, featuring 10 other comedians. (And please don’t forget: To enter Hart’s

shows, you must place your smart devices in Yondr pouches for the duration of the performance.)

Hartbeat weekend also includes performances at Zouk Nightclub by Lil Wayne on Aug. 31 and Ludacris on Sept. 1. Several other guests are planned throughout the event; check Resorts World’s website for updates. –Ken Miller

Siren Songs

This pop icon will wow you with her incredible vocals and luxe residency

How could you not love at least one thing Christina Aguilera has put out? She’s been on screens since her childhood role on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, rose to superstardom after the release of her self-titled debut album and hasn’t slowed down since. You’ve had the chance to love her on the big screen with her starring role in the 2010 film Burlesque and on the small screen with her weekly appearances as a coach on six seasons of NBC’s The Voice

So it’s safe to say that Xtina can be regarded as no less than pop-culture royalty. And as the benevolent queen she is, Aguilera once again gifts her fans with an intimate residency at Voltaire, which picks up this week with shows Aug. 30-31.

This is not Aguilera’s first dip into the Vegas residency pond, though; she launched The Xperience at Planet Hollywood’s then Zappos Theater (now PH Live) in May 2019. But with her previous venue having a 7,000-person capacity, this show, in a 1,000-seat setting, offers an entirely new experience. You’ll hear many of the pop icon’s hits like “Dirrty” and “Genie in a Bottle,” as well as some of her well-known ballads like “Beautiful” and even a sultry cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.”

Almost as stunning as Aguilera’s vocals and personality, the wardrobe for this show is chic, dynamic and fashionable. From sexy bodysuits to flowing gowns and capes, you’ll be delighted by each quick change. And it’s a perfect venue to display them in, as Voltaire’s main stage features a long central runway surrounded by swiveling seats, ensuring audience members won’t strain their necks and won’t miss a second of the performance.

That intimate setting, coupled with caviar service and handcrafted cocktails, means a ticket to this show guarantees a luxurious experience with your favorite songstress. –Em Jurbala

New Menu, Same Excellence

Enjoy a fresh set of dishes at this Strip mainstay

This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Cromwell, a boutique hotel on the corner of Flamingo Avenue and the Strip. It also marks the 10th anniversary of Giada, the first foray by food star Giada De Laurentiis into Las Vegas’ vibrant dining scene. And lucky for Vegas visitors, the restaurant has announced a slate of new dishes to complement the signature items.

If you’re in for dinner, consider one of the tasting menus, which highlight many of the new dishes and the signature ones as well, and even recommend wine pair-

ings for each course. Of course, there are plenty of delicious cocktails to indulge in as well, such as the Italian Interlude, with Ciroc peach vodka, Tuaca liqueur, lemon juice and strawberry preserves.

Depending on which menu you order from, you can start with carpaccio Piedmontese, featuring thin beef drizzled with cacio e pepe vinaigrette and wild rice crispies, and the caprese salad, with heirloom tomatoes, strawberries and stracciatella cheese. For entrées, try the cacio e pepe bucatini, served in a warm pecorino Toscano cheese wheel, guar-

anteeing happy sighs, or the signature lemon spaghetti, pictured.

On the signature tasting menu, you’ll find branzino as an option, served with a summer three-bean salad, olive tapenade and roasted cannellini purée. On the main menu, the 28-ounce bone-in Tuscan ribeye could potentially be shared, depending on how friendly you are with your dinner companion. A sunny-side up egg caps it off. –Nina King

Get to Brazil

This new cocktail lounge transports its guests through an impressive drinks program

As part of its ongoing refresh, Rio Las Vegas just opened a splendid new cocktail bar, Lapa Lounge. Inspired by the Lapa neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, the sizable space is a mix of tropical and luxury vibes with plenty of sofa and club chair seating for group conversation or bartop stools for a chat with the bartenders.

The real focus here, though, is the exciting cocktail menu—a blend of familiar and unique cocktails that spotlight the many flavors of Brazil. You’ll absolutely want to pay a visit to Lapa Lounge if you’re a fan of delicious, wellmade libations.

Start with the Tiki Tango, pictured, served in a specialty tiki glass and made with Rémy Martin V.S.O.P cognac, Chinola passion fruit liqueur, falernum, guava and a grapefruit-lime citrus blend. The taste is a sweet and tangy experience. Next on the list is the hibiscus margarita, a twist on the classic with Teremana blanco tequila, Tattersall crème de fleur, hibiscus syrup and the grapefruit-lime citrus blend.

And for a great pick-me-up moment, order the popular All the Buzz, a rich and creamy blend of Casamigos blanco tequila, Galliano espresso liqueur, vanilla, coconut milk and freshbrewed coffee.

The cocktail menu continues with a variety of other classics with a twist like the Smoky Penicillin, Caipirinha Rio, Copa Cabana Spritz and more. The beautifully made menu holds a treasure of specialty cocktails, so take time to explore; and don’t miss the craft beer and seltzers, as well as wines and champagnes by the glass and bottle. –Kiko Miyasato

But even if you’ve been here countless times, there’s something you should know: You still haven’t seen it all. AREA15 is absolutely jampacked with secret quests and hidden areas. ODDWOOD BAR’S SECRET MENU

Look around AREA15 for small stickers resembling the tree’s leaves. Scan their QR code to unlock not only the Secret Menu but also special discounts and o ers at AREA15. And if you complete the Particle Quest augmented reality experience, you’ll discover a cool light setting at Oddwood.

One of the most iconic figures at AREA15 is Mechan9, a half-buried robot created by Portland, Ore., artist Tyler Fuqua. It’s also an enigma to be solved, with secret hatches everywhere containing mysterious text unknown to any scholar. Are they pure decoration or clues as to its mysterious origins? Those who discover the truth about Mechan9 and decode the final message can redeem a special surprise (and delight) from an AREA15 ambassador.

DATAMOSH

Omega Mart is full of hilarious products and mysteries to explore, but their best-kept secret is actually Datamosh Bar, tucked away within the exhibition. Most Omega Mart shoppers walk right past it, searching for portals and other dimensions and overlook it entirely. If you’re lucky enough to find it (spoiler alert: it’s in the Pharmacy), you’ll also find that, like everything they do there, the drink options go beyond the ordinary and venture into the deliciously weird.

While enjoying a bottle of Signal Lager, a Mexican-style beer from Able Baker Brewing available at various locations throughout AREA15, scan the QR code on the back to unlock and solve puzzles.

Escape to the Islands

Resorts World Las Vegas puts its own spin on the classic tiki bar

There are certain standards when it comes to any tiki bar. The vibe is always chill, groovy and fun, mixed with a little hipster and a little dive; the music is always on island-vacation rotation; and the cocktails are always tropical, colorful and strong enough to knock you on your …

Well, Resorts World Las Vegas is home to such a tiki bar, but with a little twist. First off, Golden Monkey Tiki Lounge is a hidden gem of sorts on the property. It’s not easily seen when just walking across the property, and that’s what makes it special—it’s like stumbling across a great secret. (Look for the

signs pointing you to Genting Palace and you’ll spot the lounge). Next, there is nothing dive about this tiki bar—it’s one of the most gorgeous tiki-themed spaces you’ll see, beautifully decorated with lighting and design accents, oversized lounge chairs and lush island scenery, and a sleek, marble-topped bar area.

The beverage team says Golden Monkey Tiki Lounge is more of a luxurious tiki environment, an escape from the rest of the casino vibes and a vacation from your vacation.

While there are seven classic tiki cocktails on the menu, including the mai tai, scorpion and rum runner, there are a group of unique, specialty tiki cocktails—all served in cool and kitschy tiki vessels.

For a show, start with the One Way Ticket, a blend of Appleton Estate 8 Year Reserve rum, Hamilton 86 Demerara rum, Chinola passion fruit liqueur, Heirloom pineapple amaro liqueur, lime, pineapple and orgeat. The cocktail is then dusted with cinnamon over an open flame, making the flame flair. So cool!

For a twist on taste, try the Bird of Paradise. The cocktail uses a pandan

syrup to add a rush of flavor to the recipe. Pandan is a banana-like leaf used in many Southeastern Asian desserts and cuisine. The leaves were steeped in a simple syrup which adds a nutty, vanilla, herbaceous taste to the cocktail. The syrup is then mixed with Bacardi Superior rum, Chinola pineapple liqueur, orange, lime and pineapple.

Another unique sip is the Funky Monkey. The coconut fat-washed Teeling Irish whiskey results in a silky mouth feel and is finished off with a blend of Giffard banana du Brésil liqueur, Kalani coconut liqueur, bitters and nutmeg for a deep, strong and totally smooth finish.

And just as at any other tiki bar, there are shareable cocktails, too. Sometimes called scorpion bowls, at Golden Monkey they’re called punch bowls, and one of the most popular is the Hurricane, mixed with Bacardi Superior, Myers’s dark rum, pineapple, orange, lime and grenadine. Another fun shareable is the Red Monkey Fishbowl with Tito’s vodka, lychee liqueur, watermelon juice, lime and Fever-Tree sparkling pink grapefruit soda.

So, if you want a bougie tropical escape that screams, “Welcome to your fabulous vacation!” and want to enjoy it with a bunch of strong, tiki-inspired cocktails, then you want to come to Golden Monkey. –Kiko Miyasato

Karla Lagunas

Immerse yourself into this artist’s world within a world

Every Friday evening, inside the wonderful and weird land of Omega Mart at AREA15, you can see art created in real time. UNLV’s MFA candidate Karla Lagunas will be interacting with guests and continuing to paint her evolving installation Meta-Telos III

“I think this work is mostly meant for people who may have not approached abstract art before,” Lagunas says. “In this environment, they’re able to touch it and, through the sense of touch, they

gain some understanding. … This work is about connecting with strangers and allowing intimacy to happen.”

Meow Wolf (creators of Omega Mart) reached out to UNLV seeking an art student whose aesthetic meshed best with theirs and it was Lagunas who stood out from the rest. “I was really attracted to the interactive work and the immersion (at Omega Mart),” she says. “I was really inspired to see Meow Wolf’s capacity to create these ambitious projects.”

• Libation • The Source

One of the million cool things about Omega Mart is Datamosh, a hidden bar (Hint: grocery store). The bar has visually delightful cocktails, and Lagunas’ favorite is The Source, made with blue butterfly-infused gin, Italicus, rhubarb liqueur, strawberry, lemon and a bergamot bubble. –KM

While Laugnas has shown in other galleries and immersed herself in the art world since high school, this is the first time she’s displayed on such a massive scale. “When this project came it really started to hit me,” she says. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot. I talk to my partner and he’s like, ‘This is just the beginning.’ And I’m like, ‘You know what, yeah.’ It’s early, I’m still insecure about many things I do, so I think gaining confidence—I can’t imagine where I’ll go.” –Kiko Miyasato

Julian Serrano Tapas presents bite after delectable bite

The recent closure of Picasso at Bellagio signaled a new era in the life of founding chef Julian Serrano, one where his short-term focus will be only at Julian Serrano Tapas, the vibrant restaurant at Aria. The restaurant itself is a bright, open, col-

orful space, with tables and counters curving around a large bar. An open dining room welcomes even more guests, while open kitchens give you a peek at the chefs at work.

In this restaurant, as in many in the chef’s native Spain, you’ll fi nd a

multitude of small plates and shareable dishes combined with a lovely menu of sangrias and wines. Do try to have the whole crew gathered when you order the fruity sangria pitcher, which can serve up to six. Choose from three types, including the red sangria, with red wine and muscat, lemon, orange, apple and cinnamon; the berry sangria, with muscat, a mix of berries, orange and lemon; and a seasonal variety, which combines whatever is freshest with white wine. You can get those by the glass, too, plus a nonalcoholic sangria version, beer, wine and dry sherry. When you order, don’t worry about whether or not it’s an appetizer

(or any type of course), just choose what sounds good, and order plenty. Pica-picas make a perfect snack with piparras, Basque-style peppers preserved by hand; a piquant mix of marinated olives; and Marcona almonds, all perfect for munching on throughout between dishes.

Continue with a charcuterie board, with several possibilities in ham, such as acorn-fed “pata negra” Ibérico ham and 12-month aged dry-cured bone-in Serrano ham, plus sausages. Cheese and charcuterie come with nuts, jams, tomato and artisan bread.

It can be kind of di cult to narrow down the dishes you want, but some

great choices include classics like brava potatoes with spicy tomato sauce (probably my favorite small dish of all time!) and pan con tomate on Cristal bread; garbanzo salad with cucumber and a citrus vinaigrette; beet gazpacho; shrimp ceviche; stu ed dates with goat cheese, apple purée and bacon; and tuna cones with wasabi aioli.

Get adventurous in the tins section of the menu, where imported Spanish preserved seafood in olive oil like anchoas (salted wild-caught anchovies) are presented with bread, tomato, salt and lemon.

Dishes like chicken croquetas, surf and turf with lobster and the Ser-

rano tender, with foie gras and beef tenderloin, are just a few of the meat dishes o ered.

One of the staples of Spanish cuisine is paella, and Julian Serrano Tapas presents six di erent types, from the mixta, stu ed with chicken, lobster, shrimp, mussels and veggies, to mariscos, with mussels, calamari, shrimp and squid ink. It takes 45 minutes to prepare. There are even larger-format dishes suitable for a group, like the whole suckling pig. That also takes up to an hour to prepare, so be patient.

Close out your meal with churros or Crema Catalana, an orange blossom crème brulée.

Fans of Donny and Marie who have heard Donny Osmond speak lately would tell you his voice hasn’t aged since the variety show’s ratings reign in the late ’70s. Osmond, who’s celebrating three years and 300 performances of his Las Vegas Strip residency, maintains his singing ability through a combination of good genes, healthy living and vocal exercises. And from boyhood stardom to teen idolatry through television successes and stage comebacks, his faithful fans have been there at every turn.

Osmond covers his entire career

Destiny called Donny Osmond to rap, reminisce and rock at his solo Las Vegas residency

from “Puppy Love” to “Soldier of Love.” That includes material from early ’70s Osmonds albums such as Phase III and Crazy Horses

“Phase III, actually I like that album,” said Osmond in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine hours before

an early August show at Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. “What’s interesting is the Osmonds’ trajectory as a band was more rock ’n’ roll. I don’t know if I would go so far as heavy metal, although Metallica … James Hetfield said

they used to do “Crazy Horses” in their setlist. Metallica said this. Ozzy Osbourne told me it’s one of his favorite rock ’n’ roll songs of all time.”

Hetfield would have been 8 when Phase III cuts such as “Down By the Lazy River” were in

heavy rotation on AM radio stations. That album’s proto-metal song “My Drum” may have been the heaviest track he was allowed to play in his home during his strict religious upbringing due to the Osmonds’ wholesome image.

ticketmaster.com

Osmond just happened to enter adolescence at the dawn of the ’70s pinup era. He was destined for a solo career as well as overexposure in magazines aimed at teens. Donny & Marie rescued him from that, and rescued TV audiences from the early ’70s doldrums.

The series was a blessing and a curse, as culturati wanted a break

from the past by the ’80s, but the skills Osmond had taken to a new level during Donny & Marie would open doors to Broadway with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and a return to prime time television on Dancing With the Stars. It was also natural for him to return to the stage with Marie at the Flamingo after their daytime talk show ended. Now he’s on his own, revisiting his rock ’n’ roll roots five nights a week in a show co-created by stage director Raj Kapoor. He raps. He reminisces. He’s complemented by a dynamic live band led by drummer Earl Campbell and dancing dynamos captained by superstar-in-waiting Miki Catherine. He also meets fans for preshow Q&As, where attendees are often repeat VIPs.

“It’s really interesting when you think about the di erent styles of music that I’ve done,” said Osmond, whose single “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from the Mulan soundtrack has been streamed on Spotify more than 333 million times. “Yeah, I was known primarily as a teenybopper … But it’s kind of a misconception as to who I was through the years that’s slowly eroding away.”

The Cabinet of Curiosities calls all drinkers to explore its extraordinary offerings

With so many quality options in Las Vegas, in practically every category of discretionary spending it’s hard to find things to do that are truly unique. Enter The Cabinet of Curiosities at Horseshoe Las Vegas. The 21-and-over-venue combines drinking and immersive entertainment, making the experience curiouser and curiouser. Brought to life by Imagine Exhibitions—a company with a huge portfolio of creating traveling and permanent exhibitions and attractions that allow guests to be transported to different worlds of wonder—The Cabinet of Curiosities captures the imagination and the thirst for tasty cocktails the minute you slip through the glass doors. Guests will be enveloped in a bar and lounge that exudes dark, gothic and alluring vibes, decorated with a mashup of Victorian and bohemian furnishings. Here, the word is “explore” in both content and cocktails. Start with the many interesting-looking pieces inside

the many curio cabinets placed throughout the space. Each piece is assigned a number, and you can find out its name and story by scanning a QR code with your phone. Look up No. 4381, the Mystical Typewriter, where folklore claims a tale composed with this typewriter will make its author famous but with some irksome caveats. Or how about No. 6641, the Copper Watering Can, once owned by Lucretia Spatz, who used it to water her prize-wining begonias, but the neighbors had no idea what she was grinding up in her basement to use as fertilizer. There’s also No. 8251, the Dancing Squid, once belonging to the breeders of competitive show-jumping squids. There are so many more eye-catching and strange tchotchkes to explore, and we suggest before adventuring on that you pay a visit to the bar, where the mixologists are serving up an abundance of incredible cocktails.

The Cabinet of Curiosities has garnered a reputation for its stellar

Pink Stone Egg
Festival of Lights

It’s Cocktails 101 inside The Lock as the speakeasy and The Cabinet of Curiosities o ers a mixology masterclass several times throughout each month (this week includes Aug. 29 and 31). Running the class is master mixologist Daniel Ponsky, a man overflowing with knowledge when it comes to all things spirits and cocktails, and he’s more than happy to share that knowledge. “The best part of this class is that at the end of the day you’re going to learn a little something about making cocktails,” says Ponsky.

You’ll fill your brain with tons of cocktail factoids. You’ll learn some history about spirits and cocktails, how to stir a drink so you don’t bruise the alcohol, the di erence in the types of ice, how to properly shake and pour a cocktail, what the di erence is between juices, syrups and elixirs, how to activate the sugars in dehydrated fruit resulting in more caramelly flavors ... the list goes on and on.

You’ll also get to craft three di erent cocktails, like the Apricot Manhattan, with all the tools provided. On the bar a cornucopia of spirits, mixers, garnishes, syrups, bitters, tonics, fruits, spices and juices wait for your own creativity, as the third cocktail will be a buildyour-own recipe.

cocktail program, both at the main bar and The Lock (more on that later). Might we o er our suggestions to get you started? Check out the signature cocktails, beginning with the Peachtree Sweet Tea, a great cocktail to kick o what will no doubt be the first of many orders. Be careful, though—it’ll get you feelin’ fine in no time with its blend of gin, rum, vodka, peach liqueur, yuzu and sweet tea (think a dressed-up Long Island Iced Tea).

If it’s early enough and you’re still yearning for another co ee to give you more pep, try the Flea Market Martini, a totally delicious mix of vanilla vodka, co ee liqueur, freshbrewed co ee, sweet condensed milk and cinnamon fire syrup.

Tequila lovers, go after the Pink Stone Egg, a tropical, slightly carbonated treat with tequila, lime

juice, coconut purée, passion fruit liqueur and ginger beer. And for lovers of sprit-forward cocktails, the Festival of Lights has been a mainstay on the menu for its smooth and bold mix of bourbon, vermouth, orangecello, lime and honey syrup.

Wines and beer on draft and in bottles, a mocktail menu, top-shelf spirits and a happy hour menu (1-6 p.m. daily) help round out the offerings at The Cabinet of Curiosities. But if you’re itching for a next-level cocktail journey, make a reservation for the bar and lounge’s speakeasy, The Lock.

flower liqueur, lemon juice and hibiscus syrup, and the Key to My Pink Heart (one of this writer’s fave cocktails on the Strip!) with rum, crème de almond, crème de cocoa and oatmilk is one cocktail to write home about.

You can’t miss the entrance to The Lock—it’s that big door that looks like the entrance to a bank vault. But can you get inside? You’ll have to pick up the phone and see if someone answers, after which you’ll have to go through a series of riddles once you make it inside the antechamber. But it’s all worth it once you step inside the space. You’re immediately transported to the Prohibition era, as the intimate room is decorated in period pieces and throwback tunes flow through the air. (Secret: there’s a speakeasy inside the speakeasy!)

The Lock serves up its own menu of Prohibition-era cocktails, but a bonus here is getting to build your own cocktail based on your preferences; you fill out a little card for the bartender to gauge your likes, tastes and personality. The menu here changes often, but inquire about our two favorites we had on our last visit. The Smoke and Mirrors is the perfect sipping cocktail with tequila, mezcal, violet

Coming up on Aug. 29-31, The Cabinet of Curiosities invites guests to a special event, Prohibition Cocktails: Crafting Classic Libations From the Speakeasy Days. For more information on the event, to make a reservation for The Lock and to book the Mixology Class (see sidebar), visit thecabinetlv.com, email info@thecabinetlv. com or call 833.855.2888.

Twenty One Pilots builds a bridge between band eras with the critically acclaimed ‘Clancy’

Will Twenty One Pilots’ seventh studio album prove to be the final chapter in the story of the biggest rock act to come out of Ohio, the beginning of a new one, or both? Time will tell, but Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun are definitely ending a multi-album conceptual narrative with Clancy. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and has been supported by this summer by The Clancy World Tour, a massive yearlong trek that concludes with two shows at London’s O2 Arena.

In other words, Twenty One Pilots is still flying high after the breakout success of 2015’s Blurryface, the album in which the duo perfected its mélange of musical styles that would be an unmanageable mess in the wrong hands. Joseph’s creative exuberance, knack for conjuring synthesizer hooks and infinite wellspring of lyrical inspiration is o set by Dun’s expressive force-of-nature drumming that complements emotions Joseph explores in song.

The combination is an unstoppable force that creates a rock, rap, reggae, punk, synth-pop and emo amalgamation as compelling sonically as it is catchy. Blurryface’s “Stressed Out” captured the zeitgeist of the mid-2010s like no other angst-driven single, while the song’s lyrics, “My name’s Blurryface and I care what you think,” became an irresistible earworm that helped drive the album to No. 1. Clancy the character showed up on 2018’s Trench, which would

reach No. 2 and expand Twenty One Pilots’ devoted fan base. Sixth studio full-length Scaled and Icy left some critics cold after its 2021 release, but it was its third top three album. Clancy the album feels like a natural pivot after Scaled, as if Joseph and Dun are sowing the seeds of a positive upbeat direction while harvesting the results of 15 years of artistic growth.

Maybe Clancy won’t return, or he’ll come back in another form. One way or another, Joseph will express himself through alter egos and shows no signs of wavering in his voyage of musical discovery. Only The Killers, an influence on Joseph, are a bigger American rock band, and they are of an earlier sub-generation. His ideas resonate with audiences, and his personas are millennial embodiments. His fans, in turn, express themselves creatively and share the results with the duo. Tyler and Joseph encourage listeners a ected by their songs to create fan art, and have interacted with artists. The bond created is one reason Joseph can communicate through recurring characters, and Clancy allowed him to draw fans back into the Twenty One Pilots universe with the music and the album’s promotional plan.

Core devotees received red envelopes with contents that teased the album. Listening events were held at 175 record stores for thousands of fans. The tour features The Fan Premier Exhibit, a traveling museum of personal items that tells the band’s history through the conclusion of Clancy. There’s doesn’t seem to be any end in sight for Twenty One Pilots, though. Only a new flight plan.

For nearly a decade now, the REAL BODIES exhibit at Horseshoe Las Vegas has fascinated visitors with preserved human bodies and anatomical specimens. The Las Vegas Strip attraction, one of many unique experiences curated by Imagine Exhibitions, celebrates its eighth birthday this year. This August, coincidentally the eighth month of the year (in 2024, the digits of which also add up to eight!) make a trip to REAL BODIES to take in its eerie yet educational, one-of-a-kind exhibit. In honor of the attraction’s eighth anniversary, here are eight things to know:

THE GALLERIES

Kick off your tour of REAL BODIES beside a simple pinewood coffin and the first full body specimen of the exhibit, which ultimately boasts the most detailed dissections and highest quality specimens of any human bodies exhibition. Venture through the “Anatomist’s study” to learn about the long and storied history of the preservation of human remains, before embarking on an educational and stunningly visual journey about the respiratory, digestive, nervous and circulatory systems, an exhibit on muscles and how they help us move exemplified by bodies in motion and another on the miracle of medicine. Learn about psychology in addition to physiology through collections like “What Becomes of Us,” “Love,” and “Beginnings.”

WHERE SCIENCE…

Emotional displays allow visitors of REAL BODIES to understand anatomy in a new and edifying light, from the sight of diseased organs to the reproductive system to shining imitations of the arteries, capillaries and veins that keep us alive. Browse over 20 preserved human bodies and more than 200 anatomical specimens for a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of how our anatomical system works than you are likely to find in a classroom.

…MEETS ART

It’s obvious from the moment you step into REAL BODIES that it’s as much a visual attraction as it is an educational one. The bodies themselves glow under lights, their muscles, skeletons and anatomical systems carefully preserved and on display. The entire experience illuminates not just the bodies of others, but strengthens your understanding of your own body, mind and soul. Art installations, including some by Las Vegas residents, include moving sculptures, a wall of bones and a catacomb-style environment.

THE PROCESS OF PRESERVATION

REAL BODIES doesn’t just teach visitors about the achievement of human preservation, but exemplifies it. A talented team at REAL BODIES has used polymer preservation to preserve the exhibit’s specimens — using liquid silicone rubber to prevent decay. The socalled plastination process starts with dissection and dehydration, and ends with the hardening of the silicone polymer to present the specimen for study.

SAY ‘I DO’ AT REAL BODIES

Las Vegas is a well-known destination for elopements, and REAL BODIES is poised to contribute. If you’re looking for an eccentric, unique and distinctly Las Vegas way to get married, look no further than the “What Becomes of Us” gallery at REAL BODIES. The latter is focused on where we will go when we die, what we leave behind and what follows life.

EVENTS, ETC

Weddings aren’t the only event that can take place at REAL BODIES. It lends itself to groups, who can obtain discounts with a party of 10 or more, and field trips, with its educational, philosophical and artistic value. The space is also open to private events.

UPGRADE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH A PACKAGE

Did you know there are ways to enhance what you take away from the REAL BODIES exhibit? Keep it simple with an educational or souvenir package, or go big with something like the virtual reality package. This experience takes all that the attraction already has to offer and combines it with impressive technology. Or, for the romantics, purchase the “Love Room Package” to seal a love lock on the Heart Wall.

PRICING AND OTHER LOGISTICS

REAL BODIES is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with entry allowed until 6:30 p.m. Children ages 3 and under can enter for free, while those ages 4 to 12 can go for just $23. All those older can purchase tickets starting at $31, although discounted prices are available online.
