Scare Up Some Fun
Halloween is many people’s favorite holiday. And who can blame them? It’s the one time of the year when they can pretend to be someone else entirely—and get tons of candy to boot! OK, maybe that latter reason doesn’t apply to many of the adults reading this magazine, but the point is clear: Halloween is just out-and-out fun, and nowhere is that more true than Las Vegas.
To say this city celebrates All Hallows’ Eve is a serious understatement. If you don’t believe me, check out associate editor Kiko Miyasato’s roundup of just a few of the events going on this week, from costume parties and contests to entertainment and cocktails (“Get In the Spirit,” p. 24). Then get on your costume, get in an Uber, and have the time of your life.
If celebrating Halloween isn’t quite your candy bag, no worries. There’s plenty else going on this week to keep you entertained:
• Laughs. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher returns to his successful run at MGM Grand (“Politics and Punchlines,” p. 32).
• Live music. Guitarist extraordinaire Carlos Santana returns to his long-running residency at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay (“Art and Soul,” p. 36 ).

• Luxury. If you’re a cigar aficionado who truly appreciates the fi ner things in life, you’ve got to check out Montecristo Cigar Bar at Paris Las Vegas (“The Gathering Place,” p. 17).
And that’s just the beginning of the fun within the following pages. Enjoy Halloween any way you want—Las Vegas is glad you’re here!

Former mob attorney and Las Vegas mayor’s legacy lives on in this downtown restaurant
Oscar Goodman is heavily woven into the fabric of Las Vegas history. As a defense attorney, Goodman represented some of the most notorious crime figures in history, including Meyer Lansky, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Anthony “Tony the Ant” Spilotro. (Goodman even played an attorney in the 1995 Martin Scorsese movie Casino, defending a character loosely based on Rosenthal.)
He was also mayor of Las Vegas from 1999 to 2011, during which time he also became a spokesperson for Bombay Sapphire gin. (In an unforgettable moment, when speaking to an elementary school class, he was asked what he would want if stranded on a desert island. His answer: “Gin.”)
In a way, Oscar’s Steakhouse is a perfect reflection of everything this man is: It’s got plenty of old-school charm, it celebrates gin cocktails, and many of its menu items are named after mob figures. Oh, one more thing: It’s absolutely unforgettable.
Your experience starts with the destination itself, inside the Plaza’s iconic glass dome. The immaculately appointed room is extremely welcoming; You really want to spend time here just enjoying the vibe. And with signature cocktails like the Q 1908, made with
Empress gin and fresh lemon, and the Hizzoner, made with Bombay Sapphire gin (and more Bombay Sapphire!) and a slice of jalapeño, that’s easily accomplished.
With your taste buds awakened, time to dig into some of Oscar’s cleverly named appetizers like Johnny Quinn’s crab cake, served with stone-ground mustard and citrus remoulade, Crazy Phil’s Gruyère-topped onion soup and No Nose’s mob meatballs, smothered with house-made ricotta, Parmesan and basil.
Then you’re ready to murder an entrée (or two). We personally recommend the braised short rib “Rossini,” served with celery root, horseradish and heirloom carrots, Oscar’s Black Angus burger, on toasted brioche with American cheese and “Plaza” sauce, and Skuna Bay salmon, topped with Romesco sauce. Accompany any of these with Sheriff Ralph’s mashed potatoes, thick-cut fries or crispy Brussels sprouts.
And you shouldn’t skip dessert here! The deep-dish chocolate cookie is our personal favorite, but you can’t go wrong with classics like crème brûlée, New York-style cheesecake and carrot cake. –Ken Miller

Keeping It Crisp
These longtime Las Vegas headliners bring fresh magic to every single show
After I turned 20, it’s hard to remember a time when Penn & Teller haven’t been part of my life. Far before I moved to Las Vegas in 2003, I remember vividly so many indelible moments: First discovering them on Saturday Night Live in 1985; seeing them in the music video for Run D.M.C.’s “It’s Tricky” in 1986; renting Penn & Teller Get Killed in 1989; watching their various appearances on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in the ’90s; seeing them on television shows like Friends, The Drew Carey Show, The West Wing and Home Improvement; and, of course, seeing them live for the first time at their long-running show in Las Vegas. (They are actually one of the longest-running acts in Vegas history, 31-plus years and counting.)
I’ve since seen the show almost more than any other in town, and it never, ever, gets old. Just as their résumé would suggest, Penn & Teller never rest, even though they easily could at this stage of their careers. When they’re not hosting Fool Us on the CW (and getting fooled very little by fellow magicians), The Tall One and The Quiet One are always coming with new ways of presenting material, some of it so old that it’s public domain. A great recent example is the “donut on a string” illusion, here expanded to include an inner tube and a piece of rope (and a very hungry Teller).
There’s another reason to be a frequent attendee: It’s one of the most relaxing, inviting shows in town. As patrons begin filing in, pianist Mike Jones evokes Vince Guaraldi vibes on the ivories while Penn Jillette accompanies him on a bass. You really feel like you’ve just entered someone’s living room, and they’re doing their best to make you feel at home. And boy, does it work.
At their core, Penn & Teller have always been about one thing: Surprising their audience. How they’ve managed to do it as long as they have may be the biggest surprise of all.

Bring the group together at this inviting Las Vegas lounge
If you are looking for a lounge that has it all, stop at Montecristo Cigar Bar. This cool space has plenty of luxurious seating plus large screens for sports viewing (and large windows to check out people passing by in Le Boulevard). It’s also got a great ventilation system, so breathe easy. In the humidor, you’ll find boxes of beautifully displayed cigars on custom Spanish cedar shelving, from the namesake Montecristo to H. Upmann. There are lots of other brands, however, such
as Padrón, Arturo Fuente, My Father and Romeo Y Julieta. Pair any of these with a cocktail like the classic Blood & Sand (pictured), with Dewar’s Blended Scotch whiskey, Casa Martelletti sweet vermouth, Heering cherry liqueur and orange juice. Le Melon Rouge is a light, bright glass of Stoli Raspberry vodka, mint and Red Bull Red. The lounge has several cocktails that feature high-end spirits, like the Rob Roy, with The Dalmore 18year whiskey, Angostura bitters and Casa
Martelletti vermouth di Torino Classico. (Find it on The Connoisseur’s List.)
Other beverages include red, whites, rosés and the sparkling wines, as well as domestic and imported beer, and coffee. The French-pressed Lavazza coffee is prepared tableside, with a cookie. Snacks, such as the meat and cheese plate, will give you something to nibble on before or after enjoying your cigar. –Nina King

Performance and Perfection
Have a phenomenal meal while admiring the impressive chefs at this Vegas mainstay
You become part of one big family—and a big part of Vegas history—when you dine at Benihana at Westgate Las Vegas. The restaurant, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, encourages communal dining around hibachi tables that can accommodate anywhere from small families to huge reunions. And from the second you sit down to the time you depart, the experience is unlike any other, from the food and the way it’s prepared to the friends you make.
The centerpiece of the 38,000-square-foot Benihana Village (which, when you include Rikki Tiki Sushi and Silk Road Asian Bistro, make this one the largest in the world) is practically an entertainment venue, with skilled chefs whipping up your meal in front of you, serving up New York strip steak and mushrooms (by far the most popular item) to the Benihana Trio of filet mignon, chicken breast and colossal shrimp. “There is nothing like the experience of Benihana at the Westgate Las Vegas,” said general manager Kit Quirante. “The consistency and quality of our food and service is why we have been so successful for over 50 years.”
Over its half-century of existence, this Benihana has been enjoyed by some of the biggest celebrities and sports figures in history, from Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga to Mike Tyson and Kobe Bryant. It’s also undergone many phases, from a 1992 remodel to the addition of a sushi bar in 2002. But the basic philosophy of the restaurant has never changed: Make every guest feel like family.
“It absolutely is one big family, and that’s why we have such longevity with our team members,” Quirante said. “When you enjoy where you work and who you work with, it naturally leads to longterm commitment. And that feeling of trust extends to those who dine with us. The trust, affection and loyalty amongst our team members does not go unnoticed, and is the reason why we have so many return guests.” –Ken Miller

You’ll Yearn to Learn
An unforgettable piece of history is re-created on the Strip
One of the most impactful events of the 20th century, the discovery of King Tut’s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922 continues to pack in crowds in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. People simply cannot get enough of the splendor of this exhibit, which has inspired American architecture, movies, music, television and fashion. In fact, it’s so iconic that even a re-creation is compelling. Case in point: Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Exhibition in Las Vegas.
Imagine Exhibitions painstakingly put together likenesses of all the elements that make Carter’s discovery so popular. After a brief video introduction to the attraction, you’ll visit rooms full of placards containing dates, factoids, blown-up historical photographs and more. It’s like a history lesson brought to life, and as you make your way in, the exhibit becomes more elaborate, including a chariot the boy king rode, figurines of some of Egyptian gods, headwear and shrines.
The information you’ll glean here is truly absorbing stuff, from the process of mummification to the importance of the Nile River in the Egyptian way of life. By the time you reach the sarcophagus and the nested coffins (each layer more spectacular than the rest), you’re bound to want to learn more about the world in general. You may even want to become an archaeologist. –Ken Miller Luxor. kingtutvegas.com

Classic drinks join inventive new cocktails at this hot spot
Head to the South Pacific in the Golden Monkey Tiki Lounge, where you’ll find wood and bamboo accenting colorful seating and art pieces throughout.
The biggest draws in a tiki bar are the powerful cocktails, and they abound here. Check out inventive takes on classics like the deceptively simple mai tai, combining Mount Gay Eclipse rum, Myers’s Dark rum, Giffard orgeat syrup, lime and Thai basil syrup. The vibrant-red Rum Runner features Bacardi Superior rum, Hamilton Navy Strength rum, banana and blackberry liqueurs, lime, pomegranate grenadine and pineapple. The Scorpion slides down easy, thanks to Hennessy VS cognac, Bacardi Superior rum, orange, lemon orgeat and simple syrup.
If you aren’t impressed by those, look at the specialty cocktails, many of which come served in colorful cups. The Guava Gal swims by in a gorgeous upright fish, with No. 3 London dry gin, Lillet Rouge aperitif, guava syrup and lime swirling inside, while the Fire Dancer lands in an intriguing container with tiny skulls around the stem. It features Appleton Estate Reserve rum, Hamilton Demerara rum, Chinola passion fruit liqueur, Heirloom pineapple amaro, pineapple, lime, and orgeat. It is torched, and that provides amazing flavor.
Or check out the punch bowls, larger-format drinks like The Hurricane, with Bacardi Superior rum, Myers’s Dark rum, pineapple, orange, lime and grenadine. Yummy! –Nina King

Paul Stelmack
This bartender is the bee’s knees of The Underground
Life is full of kismet for Paul Stelmack, bartender at The Underground at The Mob Museum. Ten years ago, while living in upstate New York, he got a job managing an old liquor store that was built in 1908, closed during Prohibition and then opened back up. “I was bored most of the time working there, so a friend lent me the first-edition printing of The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks by David Embry,” he says. “I started reading about all these classic cocktails and I realized no one in the area
I lived and worked in knew how to make them, and if I wanted them, I’d have to learn how to make them myself.”
And that’s exactly what he did for the next decade, learning bartending and the art of making classic cocktails, worked at various restaurants and even taught a course on cocktail making. Eventually, he set his sights on Las Vegas. “I love that old-timey Vegas vibe,” Stelmack says. “I knew I wanted to be near Fremont Street and be making classic cocktails.”
• Libation • Bee’s Knees
The Bee’s Knees was named after one of the most popular dancers of the Prohibition era, Bee Jackson—who’s said to have had the loveliest knees in the industry. The cocktail is a mix of house-made strawberry-infused gin, housemade jalapeño-infused honey syrup and fresh lemon. –KM
Now he is doing exactly that! The Underground is in the basement of the museum, celebrating the culture and cocktails of the Prohibition era, and Stelmack is the friendly barkeep—with the best mustache, obviously—behind the bar. “The arc of my career has had some ups and downs but I’m very happy with where I’m at,” he says. “I’m exactly where I should be. Bartending is an expanding universe and I’m always learning something new every day.” –Kiko Miyasato

Chéri Rooftop elevates the French dining experience
Find the ideal spot for brunch with the besties or a romantic evening with your sweetie at Chéri Rooftop. The recently opened restaurant at Paris Las Vegas, with décor inspired by midcentury Parisian gardens, sits underneath the property’s Eiffel Tower with Bellagio fountains views.
The open-air design of the restaurant suits the gorgeous weather this time of year, be it day or night. If day is your desire, enjoy Chéri’s brunch from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. As the sun shines and a cool breeze wafts under large umbrellas, dig into shareable dishes like the grilled blueberry bread topped with a sweet cream cheese butter, blueberry syrup, fresh berries and mint, or freshly shucked oysters chilled on the half shell or served Rockefeller style.
Or take some recs from Chéri Rooftop’s CEO and executive chef Anthony Carron. “For brunch, I would highly recommend starting with the escargot, served with garlic herb butter and a toasted baguette,” he says. “Our selection of omelets really stand out, with options ranging from blue crab with avocado, Gruyère and Hollandaise to our linguiça sausage option with caramelized onions, piquillo peppers and Comté cheese. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, the crème brûlée

twist on the classic avocado toast—this hearty version is served on a croissant. When the sun sets, Chéri switches to dinner service from 5-10 p.m. Thursday through Monday. With twinkling lights turned on along with candlelight and views of the glowing Strip, the restaurant turns romantic, creating a memorable dining experience.
Dinner continues the French-inspired theme, with approachable twists and bold flavors added to each dish. “For dinner, main courses really take on the traditional French inspiration,” Carron says. “Particularly, I enjoy the duck au poivre, with watercress, potato pavé and topped with green peppercorn sauce, and to share, the wild mushroom cigars and osetra caviar cones.”
Familiar bites like sea scallops are served up gratinée-style with vermouth cream and sorrel and mushroom duxelles; steak frites is a French classic served with duck fat fries, maître d’ butter and watercress; and the Alaskan halibut comes with brown butter, capers, cauliflower, golden raisins, lemon and haricot verts.
Don’t skip cocktails or dessert, either. Go all-you-can-drink mimosas at brunch for $39. Master mixologists have whipped up an impressive specialty cocktails menu, all French-inspired twists on classics. Don’t sleep on the margarita twist, Margarita’s Trip to Paris, and the classic sour twist, the Eiffel Sour. The French Kiss is a conversational sip, because you’ll be talking about how good the mix is of Rémy Martin, Disarrono, lemon juice, agave and a cinnamon-sugar rim. Desserts stay classic with choices like Valrhona chocolate soufflé, profiteroles and vanilla crème brûlée.
French toast with fresh berries and Chantilly cream is a delight.”
Might we also suggest ordering the smoked salmon and bagel, a brunch staple? PRESENTED BY IMAGINE EXHIBITIONS
If it’s true that every picture tells a story, then the same rule must apply to forgotten lost treasures and relics of the past. So many everyday antiques and oddities wield the power to speak volumes. But only if it’s been given a voice.
At The Cabinet of Curiosities, a unique bar inside Horseshoe Las Vegas that blends the ordinary with the unusual, such objects have been liberated and given a place to share their stories.
START EXPLORING
P eculiar items at The Cabinet abound, making it easy to wander and peruse any piece that piques interest. But remember: These curiosities are eager to be heard. Thus, The Cabinet enhances your exploration with an extensive database of history and folklore for each item. Simply scan a QR Code and enter the item
number into a digital keypad to unlock many mysteries, secrets and stories.
A CURIOUS BUNCH
Among the many objects and oddities found within The Cabinet, here’s a taste of what to expect once you begin your search.

NO. 4381 MYSTICAL TYPEWRITER
Legend has it that a tale composed with this typewriter will bring immeasurable wealth and fame to its author. The only catch is that the author must completely avoid the letter “n.”
NO, 1195 BEDAZZLED SKULLCAP
When a small herd of deer camped out in her backyard, Judith Massoquat was determined to establish her dominance over her new neighbors. Thus, she devised a ceremonial skullcap with antlers and gemstones. Despite Judith’s confidence, the rhinestones made it difficult for the deer to take her seriously.
NO. 661 FLY ASHTRAY
At first glance, the bronze-colored fly ashtray seems harmless. But this item was stolen from somewhere you
wouldn’t want to be caught thieving: t he underworld. Asmodiel, undeterred by the threat of severe consequences if caught, could not resist the riches coming his way when sold in the Crooked Market.
NO. 777 DEINONYCHUS SKELETON
A professor in Georgia thought he’d made a profound discovery: a complete anatomical skeleton of a Deinonychus. However, when an intern paleontologist realized the find was actually a replica, the item was hastily sold to a Nevada-based company as part of a new display of oddities and curiosities…
NO. 7193 BABY CROCODILE/LIQUID HEAD BONES
At the bottom of Pyramid Lake, outside of Fernley, NV, lives a thriving pod of ichthyosaurs. As part of an old, top-secret government program, many of these intelligent Paleolithic fish were trained to thwart foreigntrained dolphin spies. Chester, the greatest ichthyosaur agent of all, sacrificed himself in 1986 to avert a nuclear catastrophe.
EXPLORE SOME DRINKS, TOO
Although there are many exciting trinkets to keep you entertained, don’t forget The Cabinet is also a bar with an excellent mixology program. Some of the curiosities might even inspire your drink order. Did the Deinonychus fossil make you thirsty?
Try the Asteroid, made with mezcal, aperitivo, chartreuse liqueur and lime juice. If Massoquat’s skullcap is more your style, try the Bedazzled Skullcap Mojito with rum, mint leaves and lime. Whatever you decide, don’t be afraid to be curious.

Bill Maher returns to the road to bring his biting humor to the masses
By Matt Kelemen
Bill Maher became aware he was funny at an early age. Like a lot of kids discovering an emerging talent, he dreamed of becoming famous. He couldn’t have imagined a future in which, at age 69, he’d helm a digitally distributed platform for which he’d interview his idols Cheech & Chong or give career advice to viral stars such as Hawk Tuah Girl, but he likely envisioned himself being politically incorrect.
Politics became his lane, his stand-up driven by pragmaticism and blunt outspokenness. Maher was there fi rst, with Politically Incorrect giving him a platform on Comedy Central beginning in 1993. While that show ended in 2002, Maher’s legacy of nononsense hilarity has endured for more than three decades.
His current HBO program Real Time with Bill Maher is in its 22nd season. He’s completed more than 140 episodes of in-conversation vlogcast Club
Random since its 2022 debut and has a high-enough profi le to make the tabloids when he goes out to dinner with Al Pacino’s ex.
Maher’s mojo for success had enough magic left to give him staying power and stamina. He’s been consistent in his beliefs, unapologetic about a lifestyle that includes staying single and smoking pot, doesn’t su er fools gladly and shares his thoughts freely. That latter tendency resulted in his one career setback, that of Politically Incorrect ’s cancellation shortly after 9/11, but the end result was a resurrection of the same format on HBO.
The lesson for Maher was to stick to his guns, reanalyze his positions occasionally but stand fi rm on his core beliefs.
He doesn’t toe the line for Republicans or Democrats and has fun with contemporary terminology such as “presentism,” the concept that history should be judged according to contemporary standards. Sometimes he invents a new word, such as the title of his 2008 documentary Religulous He’s probably best known for the “New Rules” segments that close Real Time, but Club Random is where the real Bill Maher seems to emerge. He indulges himself and his guests with sips and smoke, sits back and has a conversation that can wander anywhere.

Maher is hardly the fi rst comedian to get on the podcasting train, but he seems more at home than many of them, like it’s more of a relief than a career obligation. Real Time requires an active mind and applied courage. He’s been frank about who he believes will win the presidential election, slams wokeness and jingoism with equal aplomb, and remains stubbornly independent. At the end of the day, he seeks truth, justice and an American way to respectfully present di erences in order to fi nd common ground in policy and common sense in society, as well as the freedom to unwind any way he wishes as long it doesn’t a ect anyone else.

Check out these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry

With more than seven decades of history in Las Vegas, the Golden Nugget still shines as one of the star properties along the Fremont Street Experience. The huge property has everything a guest could want—restaurants, nightlife, gambling, entertainment and one of the coolest features in the whole city, its pool complex called The Tank, which features a 200,000-gallon shark
tank with various species of sharks. (You can even take a waterslide ride through the tank!)
One could never get bored, hungry or thirsty at the Golden Nugget with its vast array of options. But lucky for you, we’ve helped narrow down the choices. In this feature, we’ll shine the spotlight on three of our favorite spots to explore for food, drink and fun.
If a night out in Las Vegas means drinking and dancing, we suggest skipping the megaclubs and trying Troy Liquor Bar. This nightclub is way more intimate in size, but the fun you’ll have here is huge. With live DJs and VIP tables, Troy operates exactly like all the other nightclubs in Vegas, but there’s bonuses at this spot.
Troy Liquor Bar courtesy photo
One, you can gamble at table games on the balcony; and two, let’s talk about that balcony—spacious and overlooking the famed FSE! At Troy, one of the best bonuses is its bottle service: the prices here won’t break your bank. For only $299 you can get a bottle of Tito’s vodka and one bottle of Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut champagne. In the world of Vegas nightlife, this is a deal that can’t be beat.
Stepping inside this hidden-gem steakhouse instantly transports you to a special evening, as understated elegance mixes with a great balance of romantic vibes and social fun. Vic & Anthony’s also offers some of the best cuts of meat in the city. Here you can order three options that’ll melt in your mouth: the 8-ounce Snake River Farms rib cap, the A5 Kobe and the A5 Japanese wagyu filet mignon. The steakhouse also offers an impressive specialty cocktails list.
For a special experience, book one of the tables on the mezzanine level by calling 702.386.8288.
While Chart House (found in the Rush Tower) is a nice spot for dinner, we suggest this spot for some cocktails and light bites in the bar and lounge area. The draw here is a mesmerizing one—a 75,000-gallon aquarium with hundreds of fish. Plus, you can’t beat happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Enjoy $8 cocktails like the pomegranate martini and the mango mojito, $5 domestic beers and $6 import beers, $8 glasses of wine, and $7 premium spirits like Dewar’s Scotch and Bulleit bourbon. Nosh on yummy dishes from $7$11 like seared ahi nachos, firecracker shrimp, fish tacos and prime rib sliders.

Carlos Santana channels the music of the universe through his guitar playing
Carlos Santana is known for his instantly recognizable and much-celebrated guitar tone. It’s his sonic signature, where sustain meets spirituality regardless of which guitar and amplifier combination he’s used over the years. Much has been written describing the sound, Santana’s influences and his gear, but the magic comes from a place deeper than that.
Santana’s tone lives and breathes, its pulse rate determined by syncopated rhythms powered by Latin percussion.
To play in Santana (the band) must be a dream for most percussionists. The current lineup includes Carlos’ better half, Cindy Blackman Santana, on drums, Karl Perazzo on timbales and Paoli Mejías on percussion, who bring to life classic covers originated by greats such as Tito Puente (“Oye Cómo Va”), Willie Bobo (“Evil Ways”) and Babatunde Olatunji (“Jin-Go-Lo-Ba”).
Santana’s father was a violinist who lived to play his instrument. Young Carlos started out on violin but switched to Gibson guitars with feedback-reducing P-90 pickups, played through stateof-the-art amplifiers and increasingly powerful speaker heads. There’s little room for fumbling when mistakes are broadcast at deafening levels.
He perfected his blues playing and enhanced it with sustained notes, bending and vibrating strings expressively while developing a precision picking style that allowed him to erupt with dramatic
teachers and guitar magazine writers to explain the theory.
Santana is arguably an architect of jazz fusion, having pioneered the use of modal approaches to lead playing. He was a key figure in flavoring ’60s rock with alternative approaches to playing scales. Santana could add exotic elements to his soloing that basic blues playing could not provide.
This happens in “Black Magic Woman,” which sounds more exotic than minor-key sad. Santana opened up his playing by blending genres and styles, then pulled back to integrate them all into his own guitar voice. It’s a voice nowadays mainly played through PRS
Jazz saxophonists such as John Coltrane and guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin and Gábor Szabó inspired him to expand his horizons.
Santana chose spirituality over substance by the early ’70s and went in jazzier and experimental directions, culminating in Illuminations, a 1974 collaboration with Alice Coltrane, and 1974 studio album Borboletta. The band would return to the Top 10 for the first
time in four years in 1976 with Amigos, but by then Santana had practically become a vessel for divinely inspired wavelengths and frequencies.

It’s also a voice guest rapper Darryl “DMC” McDaniels celebrated on “Let the Guitar Play,” Santana’s latest single released in January: “And the guitar player lets the guitar play. That is such a good sound.” flurries of notes.
“When you’re playing music you’re bringing light into the darkness,” says Santana in the intro to his “Art and Soul of Guitar” online MasterClass. He often describes his own playing in metaphors and similes, leaving music
guitars designed by master luthier Paul Reed Smith, whose relationship with Santana dates back more than 40 years and resulted in a signature line of instruments.

est—and most unique—drumming gigs in Las Vegas. You can find him and his bandmates onstage with three cobalt-colored men, all making visual and auditory delights in the show Blue Man Group at Luxor. The long-running production continues its reign as one of the most thought-provoking and purely entertaining shows in the city, and Verderame has been there since day one.
was in fifth grade; I still have it. It’s a 1948 Leedy, a classic drum set. I got into classical percussion, played in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and went to Penn State for a few years, but all along I was still playing drums. I started getting bored of classical music. As much as I loved it there was a level to it that—there’s a lot of counting bars and resting—and you have to love it and I didn’t like all of it. So I thought about it and wanted to play drum set instead, so
I transferred to the University of Miami,
finished my undergrad there and lived in Miami for 10 years. I played music for Latin and pop tours, toured with other musicians, played with the New World Symphony, played in blues bands, wedding bands.
got a call from a friend who already played drums for Blue Man Group in Chicago and he told me to come there to check out the show and that they were auditioning for a new show in Vegas. So I flew to Chicago to check the show out. I had never seen it and
took an audition in Chicago in 1999 and got to the second round in New York. I still vividly remember that audition process; it was so, so awesome and so unique. I got the gig and moved out (to Vegas) February 2000; showed up on Super Bowl Sunday.
I’m still doing this. It’s insane that I still enjoy it! This is such a unique thing to do as a drummer and musician. It is just so unique.
collaborators of Blue Man Group) came up with some of the grooves, he wanted it to sound urban, organic, earthy, a sense of something else. So he added something to the drum kits that made it more unique. It’s just very di erent than any other gig. The interaction of how we play music and what the Blue Men do onstage is incredibly unique. That’s part of what makes the show di erent every night—it’s got shaded nuances.

so many years. Now, that being said, the show has been, at its strongest, about connection and collaboration, fundamentally. You can just let the show wash over you with the beautiful colors, beautiful videos and spectacle of guys hitting PVC pipes and making music of it. You can just be there. But there is more to it and that’s why I think it’s lasted this long. It goes deeper than just entertainment. … In order for a show to run this long and retain its artistic quality and still make money—that’s heavy. It completes the objective of a good, quality show and something that has meaning and purpose.
