Days of Future Past

One of my favorite aspects of living in Las Vegas is how much this city celebrates its past. True, we are defi nitely taking significant strides into the future thanks to state-of-the-art venues like Sphere and next-level entertainment attractions like AREA15, but at the same time, we are holding fi rm in our footing of what makes Las Vegas historically significant. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is both a reflection of that past and a look toward our future. And whether you choose past or future, you are in good hands this week.

Celebrations of the past featured in this week’s issue include Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo, a tribute to the days when the mob ran Las Vegas (“Criminally Good,” p. 28), as well as the latest show from Dita Von Teese, whose artistry reflects the days of burlesque and the showgirl, which have a rich history in Sin City. She spoke to associate editor Em Jurbala about her show at Voltaire at The Venetian (“Vintage Va-VaVoom,” p. 34). In addition, 111-year-old Pioneer Saloon, which was featured in the Fallout: New Vegas video game, this week hosts a Fallout Fan Celebration (“Geek Out!” p. 17 ), and the past and entertainment meet when you take a trip out to Grand Canyon West (“Deep History,” p. 32).

All the Right Moves

Performer brings a vast catalog to his latest Vegas visit

There was a time when Usher’s music was inescapable in Las Vegas. “Yeah!” his massive 2004 hit with Lil Jon and Ludacris, played through every club’s sound system in the post-millennium nightlife scene along with Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” and Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love.” The voices behind those DJ favorites have never fallen off, with Usher making the most moves among those three musical titans to cultivate a presence in Vegas.

By December, Usher had wrapped his My Way residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, where he spent part of the show performing on roller skates, and could count some 100 concerts as a Strip headliner. In February, two days after the release of his ninth studio album, Coming Home, he performed a 12-song set at the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show along with special guests Alicia Keys, Lil Jon, Ludacris and will.i.am.

In August, he set out on his Usher: Past Present Future Tour, which ends this December with three concerts in Miami and resumes March 29 in London, where his eight scheduled shows for the O2 Arena are sold out. In a pop culture climate that finds many of

Usher’s early ’00s contemporaries having difficulty adjusting to a streaming economy and eras-themed tours, Usher seems to be doing all right.

In interviews during the previous 12 months with podcasters such as Shannon Sharpe and Zane Lowe, Usher comes across as relaxed and ready to move into his next phase. Coming Home reached No. 2 on Billboard ’s Top 200 and was favorably reviewed as a return to form, with its 20 tracks complemented by marathon Past Present Future concerts. It was his fifth No. 1 on Billboard ’s Sales Chart, a streak that began with his 2004 No. 1 Confessions

Usher continues to bring the music of his past and present to the world until May, then the future begins. It will likely entail a new residency in his adopted hometown and a higher profile. Where does one go in Vegas after playing the Super Bowl halftime show and having a successful residency? It’s a new trail to blaze. Usher seems more than up to the task. –Matt Kelemen

The Passion Never Stops

Iconic entertainer continues his record-breaking run

in Vegas

Barry Manilow never met Elvis Presley, but he did stay in the original Elvis Suite when Westgate Las Vegas was The Hilton. “It was an older suite, but it was huge,” Manilow told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “It was the entire floor, the entire 30th floor, so I did get a sense of where he actually stayed when he was there.”

The 30th floor was remodeled shortly after Manilow’s Hilton 1985 debut. He stays in the current Elvis Suite when he flies into Vegas for his Barry Manilow: The Hits Come Home shows. For Manilow, it was love at first sight when he saw the stage where The King reigned for 636 shows (last year, Manilow broke Presley’s record at the property). Arenas enable him to take his music to the masses, but he considers the stage and audience capacity at the International Theater perfect for what he does.

“I like traveling into the audience,” said Manilow. “I have trouble being as intimate as I want to be with an arena. It’s fun and it’s exciting, but it’s a whole different kind of feeling than the Westgate. The Westgate is the perfect room for me. Out of all the rooms that I’ve ever played, this is the one for me. If I was building one for myself, this is the size I would have built.”

Anyone who’s witnessed Manilow perform “Copacabana” at the venue would agree, as set design and a flight of stairs allow Manilow to perform above the audience as he sings of music, passion and fashion. It’s a place where Fanilows the world over can make a pilgrimage to their favorite singer, where songs transport them to happier times and longtime fans dance as if the decades since “Daybreak” never happened. “These people are so happy, and they’re all ages,” said Manilow. “That’s why I still do it. Everything changed because I realized that’s why I’m on that stage. That’s why I’m there. It’s to make them feel great. It’s to make them forget their cancer and their divorces, and if they lost their job.” Mission accomplished, sir. –Matt Kelemen

Geek Out!

Take a trip into history at this video game-inspired happening

Get out of here, gamers! No, seriously! Take a trip just outside the Vegas Valley to the 111-year-old historical landmark, Pioneer Saloon, for some postapocalyptic partying during its Fallout Fan Celebration on Nov. 16-17. Even total noobs will recognize the low-key locale as one of the first settings in the popular video game Fallout: New Vegas, and they’ve got two full days of fun lined up for fans.

Admittedly, it’s a bit of a haul to get out to Goodsprings, but for an event like

this it’s well worth the trip. First of all, it’s free! And you’ll get to peruse a variety of vendors, sip and snack on thematic treats, meet and greet with superstars in the fandom, and listen to live renditions of music from the Fallout franchise. First-day highlights include the 1 p.m. Mojave Wasteland bus tour, which takes you away from the main event to see other landmarks and locations from the game. Also, don’t miss karaoke with DJ Trespass at 6 p.m., and stick around a bit later for the 8 p.m. Q&A and airing of

fan film Fallout: Nuka Break with actor Zack Finfrock.

The fun continues on day two with a Q&A and workshop featuring Chris Barnardo of The Wand Company, which creates all kinds of neat collectibles. And, of course, make sure you enter the costume contest or Fallout trivia for a chance to take home cash and prizes. –Em Jurbala

Totally Mental

This performer will make you question everything you thought you knew

Mind-blowing mentalist Colin Cloud has been on the Vegas stage as illusionist Shin Lim’s right-hand man for more than five years, but now he has a show of his own, Colin Cloud: Mastermind Las Vegas Magazine ’s Em Jurbala caught up with the performer ahead of the opening.

What pushed you to finally create your own show?

So Shin and I, we’ve been here for five years; the anniversary has just passed. But with my own show, I had performed solo at the Edinburgh festival since I was 18 years old and always loved the challenge of writing my own event and sharing that with people. ... Having been here and fallen in love with the city, and this city feels like Edinburgh festival but 365 days of the year, to be able to then have that opportunity, that platform to be able to share the best of all my work, I just felt like now was the time.

You’re basically a local at this point. What’s your favorite local hot spot?

I love the Arts District. I only really discovered it when I moved more to that (area) ... You know, Esther’s Kitchen, Makers & Finders, Cornish Pasty Co. It feels like this little hub away from the Strip ... I just love how much calmer it feels.

What made the Harrah’s Cabaret the perfect room for you?

Over the years of performing with the illusionists and even with Shin, that room is over 1,000 people, and I can often feel like when people come to those shows, I feel like for most of those people they are watching a magic show, they’re not part of the magic show. And I feel like when I do my shows I want everyone to feel like they’re engaged in some way.

All the Flavors

Strip destination offers great brunch and dinner options

Brunch rules! It’s the delicious bridge between breakfast and lunch—and it’s perfect for groups. It’s the best way to start your day and there are so many options to choose from. At Zeppola Café, where both brunch and dinner are options, you don’t just get a great meal—you get an experience.

The well-appointed eatery has two levels. We highly recommend dining on the second level, where you can overlook St. Mark’s Square of the Grand Canal Shoppes. It’s the perfect setting for large or small groups.

While sipping some of the best coffee to be found on the Las Vegas Strip, you’ll likely find it difficult to choose just one item from the menu. That’s okay—order several and share! Highlights include the B.L.T. Eggs Benedict, served on hearty country bread and adorned with romaine lettuce, Roma tomatoes and chipotle mayo, the chicken pesto omelet, here given extra flavor with Parmesan, and the breakfast wrap, stuffed full of the good stuff: smoked bacon, scrambled eggs, home-made mayo and cheddar.

Want something sweet? Zeppola

more than has you covered. The classic ricotta pancakes are a hot seller, and once you take a bit, you’ll see why; with the cinnamon sprinkled in, it’s like eating a cinnamon bun! For a serious baked treat, try Zeppola’s two signature croissants, the Rolly and the Cube. Both are available in Nutella, pistachio, chocolate mascarpone, mango and strawberry, but the Cube benefits from the delicious addition of pineapple. – Ken Miller

Nine-Hole Nirvana

Strip golf attraction is your all-in-one party headquarters

Jay Gatsby had it all, or so it seemed. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s tragic Jazz Age figure had money, power, high-placed familiars and a Long Island estate, but the one thing that could have prevented his downfall eluded him: crazy golf. Had Gatsby provided his guests with mini golf courses as Swingers now does at Mandalay Bay, they might have all been too preoccupied to participate in Fitzgerald’s plot twists.

Swingers does bring period style to its 40,000 square feet of putting fun, with its 1920s English country house motif paying tribute to to both The Great Gatsby ’s era and Swingers’ country of origin. The decades-old franchise started in London and applies the expertise it acquired adding locations in New York and Washington D.C. to its new, multilevel venue.

Projection mapping allows countryside scenery to change with the seasons. DJs provide music and caddies serve cocktails in what Swingers promises is “the ultimate house party.”

The latest offering from the masterminds at the Institute of Competitive Socializing includes the Swingers Carnival arcade, street food, mocktails and multiple private-party spaces with distinct design concepts. The courses are customizable, with 9-hole courses easily combined to create an 18-hole course. Putt play during a Vegas visit has never been as easy, accessible or visually impressive. –Matt Kelemen

Three’s Company

Trio of lounges offers different vibes and cocktails, but all are a good time

Hospitality gurus 81/82 Group gives Las Vegas visitors three distinctive places to party— Juliet Cocktail Room , Electra Cocktail Club and Rosina Cocktail Lounge—all at one property, The Venetian. “You’re able to hit all three venues at various points throughout the day,” says Tristan Hibbs, 81/82 Group corporate mixologist. “I’d recommend starting off at Juliet and get those initial drinks in, talk with your group and then get into the night at Electra and have your fun, clublike experience and then cool it back down at Rosina.”

Let’s dive a little deeper into each experience:

In Juliet Cocktail Room, live music mixed with livelier cocktails is the name of the game. Stunning showpiece glassware gives drinkers an experience, especially when filled with uniquely

tasting concoctions like the popular Fruit & Basil. “It reminds me of a smoothie,” Hibbs says. The cocktail is a blend of Grey Goose Essences Watermelon and Basil vodka, fresh watermelon juice, fresh lemon, passion fruit liqueur and fresh basil. The vibes here are chic with a mix of masculine and feminine design, all kind of reminiscent of a sleek and sexy New York penthouse. And if you’re a fan of live music, this is the spot for you. “It’s that jazzy, bluesy, lounge-type music,” Hibbs says. If the concert just ended or dinner is done and you’re ready to party but don’t want to pay high nightclub prices,

Electra Cocktail Club is your destination. “It’s more of our upbeat, clubtype vibe,” Hibbs says. “High energy. There’s a DJ nightly.” While cutting that rug, order up a craft cocktail like The Viking Panther, dedicated to former NFL players Ryan and Matt Kalil, with the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings, respectively. (It’s the venue’s most popular libation.) The brothers are founders of Celaya tequila, and the popular spirit is mixed with Coco Lopez coconut cream, lime and Sprite. While more intimate than a big nightclub, Electra still exceeds in audio-visual delights; entire walls are

filled with high-def screens that display cool graphics, and in the middle of it all is a space dedicated to dancing.

The most intimate space of the three, Rosina Cocktail Lounge, almost feels like a romantic secret, and it’s dripping in opulent furnishings and moody lighting—this is the perfect spot for a date or a chill, upscale gathering

Tips/Insider Knowledge

At Juliet Cocktail Room, catch favorite Las Vegas performer Skye Dee Miles singing a host of jazz tunes every Sunday at 9 p.m. Every Tuesday at 9 p.m., join the Keys & Karaoke event, a live piano karaoke party.

At Electra Cocktail Club, enjoy themed nights like Frequency Latin Wednesdays at 9 p.m. with hot Latin beats, and Throwback Thursdays at 9 p.m. with a mix of throwback pop, hip-hop and rock. Every Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m., enjoy high-energy DJ sets that transform the room into a nightclub.

At Rosina Cocktail Lounge, there is a monthly Mixology Master Class; the next one takes place on Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. The class includes three crafted cocktails, plus one of your own creations, designed with the help of the master mixologist.

of friends. It’s also the lounge with some of the best mixology happening in the city. “Our idea with Rosina was to be more mixologist-forward,” Hibbs says. “There are cocktails you can’t get anywhere else in the city.” And each cocktail is an experience, like The Passionate One. In the bottom of the glass is a sangrialike mix of Justin sauvignon

blanc, Licor 43, strawberry purée, passion fruit purée and mint, and placed on top is a vessel of fresh blackberries and raspberries which the drinker pours into the mixture before sipping. Rosina is also home to quite a collection of rare and coveted spirits, like the whole collection of Tequila Komos Extra Añejo.

“With the three spots, we wanted to bring you that Vegas experience and give you something you can’t get anywhere else,” Hibbs says. –Kiko Miyasato

Dancing right into her dream come true

“I’m a shy farm girl from Colorado,” Mariah Nieslanik says when talking about first moving to Las Vegas and thinking about auditioning for the adult topless revue Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease. “I didn’t think I could do topless; I couldn’t do it.”

But after dancing on the Strip in various production shows and after seeing what an amazing production Fantasy was, she decided to audition for the show at Luxor. She nailed her audition

and now celebrates more than a decade with Fantasy as a featured dancer and co-producer. “After the first show and the top came off, I was like, ‘I can’t believe I haven’t been doing this my whole life!’” she says. “This is where I’m supposed to be! It’s so freeing and empowering as a woman. I love it.”

Fantasy recently celebrated its 25th anniversary in Las Vegas, and Nieslanik reflects on the show’s success. “Fantasy is a classy, elegant production show,” she

says. “What sets us apart is our producer, Anita Mann, and the choices she makes as a choreographer. We have amazing choreographers from all over the world. It really gives us the best show for the past 25 years. It’s for absolutely everyone. My grandma is part of the Red Hat Society, and she brings the single ladies with her—they’re in their 80s and they love it. There’s couples, singles, huge bachelorette parties; something for everyone.”

And for Nieslanik, being a part of the show she was too shy to join at first, she says, “I have to pinch myself every night. We all have hard days, but the second I get onstage there’s a live audience and they’re smiling and so happy to see you— it’s a dream come true.” –Kiko Miyasato

Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse returns an old-school Vegas vibe to the Strip

In an attractive ’40s-era storefront at Flamingo Las Vegas, you’ll find The Bakery at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, a cute bakery hawking Italian bread and pastries. Wooden counters and display shelves with vintage-style product line the walls, and to one side, you’ll find a small hallway. Head down it, and you’ll enter the restaurant, where photos on the walls recall the days of Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, two mob associates who rose to power in the growing city of Las Vegas, and who opened the Flamingo in the ’40s.

The cuisine here consists of classic steakhouse dishes like the enormous seafood tower, available in two sizes, premium and grand. The premium version piles on Maine lobster, oyster from both the East and West coasts, poached shrimp and Alaskan king crab, while the grand version increases the amount and adds shrimp ceviche as well. Jumbo lump crab cakes and coconut shrimp will satisfy smaller appetites.

Other apps include a fresh-baked bread board with several butters and salts, charcuterie and tru e beef carpaccio with anchovy aioli. Lobster bisque is smooth, while heirloom beet

salad with blue cheese and a pomegranate gastrique locks in fresh flavors.

If you are a steak lover, you’ve got a few options both wet- and dry-aged, like 21-day wet-aged filet mignons and ribeyes or the 60-day dry-aged ribeyes and New York strips. For a larger portion, consider a tomahawk ribeye. Cap them with such items as tru e butter, hollandaise sauce, peppercorn sauce and more, or add on a lobster tail, Alaskan king crab leg or scampi, among other options.

There are plenty of staple dishes to try out as well, like the butternut squash-stu ed chicken, Colorado lamb chops with chimichurri sauce, Chilean sea bass with roasted red pepper romesco sauce, or diver scallops. Classic sides range from baked potato to Brussels sprouts.

Get a great deal with the fall prix fixe menu, which serves up a flavorful Caesar salad, a 10-ounce filet mignon (charred in a 1,200-degree oven) with house sauce, and big bites of vanilla crème brûlée for dessert. Add on a Kentucky Old-Fashioned with Bulleit rye and bourbon, Demerara syrup and Angostura bitters.

But there’s more to Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse than the restaurant

itself. If you are wandering around the casino floor and see Bugsy Siegel’s o ce, you might be tempted to wander in and see what that’s all about. Do! You’ll find yourself popping into the speakeasy known as The Count Room, a swank space with flamingo décor and a beautiful bar (for 21 and older). Seating lines the walls and faces the bar, where you can score plenty of strong cocktails while you share a table of edible tidbits. Live entertainment gets the whole room hopping on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 8 p.m. with The Moonshiners, a popular Las Vegas group that specializes in “Prohibition Pop,” a cool mashup of today and yesteryear.

Grand Canyon West has this natural wonder covered from rim to river

The Hualapai Tribe is connected to the Grand Canyon in a way the National Park Service is not. “The People of the Tall Pines” have a spiritual bond with the land that they believe was created by an ice comet that smashed into Colorado and melted into a cavern-carving river. Geologists theorize the natural wonder was once covered by a vast sea nearly 2 billion years

ago that left behind fossilized evidence hikers can stumble upon today. Whether due to sudden cosmic cataclysm or slowly shifting subsurface plates, the Grand Canyon evolved into its current 277-mile-long, 18-mile-wide formation that modern-day explorers access from its north, south and west rims. The West Rim, the closest one to Las Vegas, is located

within the 1 million acres of ancestral homeland owned by the Hualapai and is the tribal-operated Grand Canyon West.

Perhaps best known as the location of the Skywalk, the horseshoe-shaped bridge that extends 70 feet over the canyon and provides a view 4,000 feet to its bottom via glass platform, Grand Canyon West provides a variety of experiences from

888.868.9378 or grandcanyonwest.com

hiking and ziplining to helicopter tours of the Colorado River and rafting on its rapids. The Hualapai enhance the experience with a traditional village, singing and stories.

Hulalapai guides relate history and legends, while visitors hike the 12.8-mile Grand Canyon West Rim Trail or railing-free Highpoint Hike. The former is less strenuous than many of the South Rim trails, while the latter leads to Guano Point, where incomparable 360-degree vistas and the remnants of an aerial tram that once spanned 7,500 feet are sightseeing highlights.

While Major John Wesley Powell and companions rode the rapids in rowboats during their 1869 exploration of the Grand Canyon, the Hualapai River Runners offer a one-day motorized rafting adventure and a two-day paddling expedition that includes camping in Spencer Canyon and steak dinners. Both options include whitewater excitement followed by casual floats.

As indigenous guides relate, the Hualapai refer to the river as Ha’yiđađa. It’s their sacred source of origin and a living

entity, one to be revered and respected. It’s something to keep in mind while exploring a realm inhabited for centuries by generations of Hualapai ancestors, some of whom sacrificed their lives for freedom. These stories are also related by the Hualapai Bird Singers, an all-ages ensemble in colorful dress who chant and dance at Grand Canyon West’s Eagle Point.

Eagle Point is also the site of the village, where traditional housing, sweat lodges and other structures can be observed before a visit to peruse souvenirs at the tribe’s flea market. Do that after the zipline, where guests can have an adrenalizing experience that could be considered an homage to the miners that once took the tramway to work and back to whatever housing was provided for them in the 1950s.

Modern-day lodging offers modern conveniences and spectacular views of sunrises and sunsets, while RVs are accommodated as well. Regardless of how visitors stay, they sleep well at night under the stewardship of the People of the Tall Pines.

Dita Von Teese talks about her newest production

Burlesque icon Dita Von Teese recently opened her dazzling residency at Voltaire inside The Venetian. The star chatted with Las Vegas Magazine’s Em Jurbala about the show.

It feels really nice. It’s so glamorous.

It’s definitely a big shift for me. Even though the runway was invented for burlesque in America in the 1930s, it still is (di erent from) most of the theaters that I do—these big historic theaters that hold like 3,000 people … It was a lot of me trying to figure out how to make it feel immersive and adapt the show to utilize the runway and the whole room … I’m not used to having theater in the round or being that close to people. There’s a lot of beads that go rolling o into the audience, which people can feel free to capture, but it’s definitely a di erent feeling, and I’m really getting into it.

Right.

Actually, not at all, because I’m that way no matter what. I’ve never ever in my entire career thought, “Oh, no one’s going to see that from back in the balcony.” I always think about the details because it’s not even whether someone sees it, it’s what does it for me … I love the details. I love diving deep and really digging into the history of whatever I’m doing.

A lot of people who’ve seen the show feel like it’s an entirely new show because it’s such a di erent backdrop. Of course, there’s going to be some of my best-known numbers like my martini glasses. And yes, thanks to Caesars Entertainment we were able to bring over a curated selection of the Bob Mackie costumes from Jubilee!, which really means a lot to me because those costumes are really untouched since Jubilee! closed … There’s a lot of new things. I’ve added a lot of things and done some edits … There’s a big fetish number and I’ve completely changed that. It used to be an ensemble cast without me and now it’s one of my own numbers with an epic new set piece.

There’s three! I added, besides Dirty Martini, who is a global icon of burlesque and world champion tassel twirler, and Jett Adore, who’s been part of my tours for as long as I can remember. We’ve added Tosca Rivola, who is an amazing performer. She does the Cyr wheel ... I found her at this open casting and she did this incredible act and I was like, “Can you do it and add some strip tease?” So I’m pretty sure she’s the only woman to be performing strip tease while also revolving in a Cyr wheel.

It’s a little bit of both. For instance, Dirty Martini, her number is a little bit di erent from what she did at (Horseshoe Las Vegas). She’s performing with one of my jeweled carousel horses. It’s really a spin—no pun intended—on the tassel twirling. It’s a collaboration … I think all of us burlesque performers have the formula of what our best number is, and so she adapted that to this set and this prop that I’m known for creating.

ComplexCon converges on the city, complete with a Travis Scott performance

Media giant Complex has built a reputation in the convention world with its annual event, ComplexCon, fi rst introduced in Long Beach, Calif., in 2016. The convention has grown its reach and influence each year in the worlds of sneaker culture, hip-hop, fashion, design, food and art. This year, ComplexCon brings its force to Las Vegas, stepping outside of L.A. for the fi rst time. “I wanted and needed to breathe new life into the event,”

says Complex CEO Aaron Levant. “I really wanted to plant the flag into the ground in Las Vegas to really build the event into the future.” ComplexCon will return next year with plans for the next 10 years, each year, Levant says, hopefully immersing itself more and more into the city during its weekend takeover. This year, though, conventioneers are in for a memorable trek across a million square feet of space at the Las Vegas Convention

Center from Nov. 16-17. This iteration of ComplexCon expands to four times its normal size as an unprecedented number of brands, exclusive activations and merchandise and experiences are on display. Let’s take a look at just some of the highlights:

Every year, ComplexCon invites a celebrity to help curate the convention—this year welcomes Travis Scott and his own creative collective, Cactus Jack. While Scott has curated the convention’s look and feel, he’ll have his own convention within a convention—CactusCon, where attendees can shop his merchandise, including exclusive pieces from nearly a dozen special brand collaborations.

Attendees can purchase limitededition, exclusive pieces from more than 200 brands including Nike (with the biggest activation at nearly 20,000 square feet, spread across three separate immersive experiences), Adidas, Glo Gang, Alexander Wang, New Balance, Fragment, Futura Laboratories, Ecko, Cactus Planet Flea Market, Mastermind, Vans, Saint Michael and more.

Complex hosts its own activation with the ComplexCon gift shop with exclusive festival merch. This year, Complex collaborated with Japanese artist and illustrator Hajime Sorayama to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Panels and discussions return under the moniker ComplexConversations. Expect in-depth sessions with A-list actors,

musicians, visual artists, athletes and business figures. Complex will also be filming in front of an audience for its popular YouTube channel.

Complex’s popular L.A. Family Style Food Festival comes to the Las Vegas convention floor, bringing nearly 50 restaurants from L.A. and Las Vegas together to host a feeding frenzy of exclusive dishes and restaurantbranded merchandise. Brands include Naked City, Tiger Sugar, Rokstar Chicken, Camel Coffee, Trill Burgers, Howlin’ Rays and One Piece Café.

Music is such a huge part of ComplexCon and, this year, the convention space is divided into two segments, with one third of the space being dedicated to live performances. Every day at 5 p.m., the live music space hosts musical stars including Travis

Scott, Playboi Carti, Metro Boomin and surprise guests. “It’ll be a full-scale festival stage setup,” Levant says.

The art world descends on ComplexCon with one of the biggest booth displays from Known Gallery, featuring 800 artists exhibiting exclusive paintings and works.

Resorts World Las Vegas is ComplexCon’s official partner hotel. For both days of the convention, the property turns into ComplexCon headquarters with exclusive afterparties and activations popping up at various venues. The highlight is Nov. 17, as Travis Scott and special guests close the convention with a huge performance at Zouk Nightclub.

“There’s a lot of concerts and festivals that people can go to, ComplexCon is so much more multifaceted,” Levant says. “You can come here and get a multisensory experience. It’s almost like building a micro Disneyland for two days. If you’re in love with the culture that Complex represents this is like your Disneyland. It’s like the World’s Fair for this generation.”

We count the ways we love Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease

Last month Luxor’s fabulous adult revue, Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease, celebrated its 25th year on the Las Vegas Strip. In honor of the momentous occasion, we share with readers 25 of our favorite things (in no particular order) about the show that has entertained, enticed and rocked the libidos of women and men for more than two decades.

Host and singer Lorena Peril’s voice. It just stuns.

The calendars of the cast. Every year they just get hotter and hotter. Get yours at the show.

Producer Anita Mann! She’s a legend in the dance and entertainment world and continues to choreograph many of the show’s hot numbers.

Co-producer and featured dancer Mariah. She continues to perform the Three Ladies, One Bed number set to “Nasty Girl.” Talk about seeing a fantasy right before your eyes.

The caliente number!

Dancer Mandy burns up the floor with traditional Latin dance.

The show is topless. Let’s celebrate the beautiful female form!

Chaps and cowboy hats. They’ve never looked sexier than in the country music number.

Performance director and featured dancer Ashton. She lights up the

stage with her long legs and seductive moves during the Solo Dancing number.

Elvis! One lucky audience member gets to join the ladies onstage to impersonate The King.

and

The new Cat’s Cradle number. It toes the line of light bondage

playful moves, all set to Peril’s amazing voice belting out “Black Velvet.”

The stripper pole number. Need we say more?

Tickets start at just $39!

Peril’s rendition of “Hips Don’t Lie.” Her belly dancing is fire.

The opening video montage. Get a glimpse into the world of Fantasy over the past two decades.

The silks number—talk about some breathtaking moments!

Peril’s comedy moments. She gets sooo cutesy when interacting with the audience.

The dance routines. We’re talking top choreographers including Mandy Moore, Criss Judd, Val Chmerkovskiy and more.

The Fantasy VIP Experience. You get to meet some of the cast!

Red lingerie. It’s never looked so sexy as when the cast wears it during the Red Light Fantasy number.

The sheer dancing talent. The show is sexy, of course, but the cast backs it up with some impressive choreography and terpsichorean abilities.

Audience diversity. Young or old (the show is 18+), male or female, couples, singles, bachelor and bachelorette and even

divorce parties—they’re all here and make the energy even more electric.

The show performs seven days a week! Twice on Sunday!

The opening and closing numbers. You get the pleasure of seeing all the

Before he came to Las Vegas, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was known mainly for his mob ties, but once he bought up 95 shares of the Nevada Project Corporation (the company that built the Flamingo), he became associated with this city forever. Siegel came to Vegas in 1945 and took over the building of the Flamingo from businessman Billy Wilkerson, who ran out of money. So Siegel purchased the shares (seen here) for $250 apiece and opened the hotel in 1946. After the construction costs ballooned to more than $6 million, the hotel ended up closing only six months later and Siegel returned to L.A. Less than a year later, he was gunned down in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s home—some say it was a hit ordered by the mob, revenge for losing all those millions they lent Siegel to build the Flamingo.

Dig

up

a treasure trove of gems at Nevada State Museum

Step away from the Las Vegas Strip and step inside the history of the Silver

State at the Nevada State Museum. In the museum, spread across 70,000 square feet that includes two exhibits (one permanent and one changing), in addition to a library and public spaces, discover the state’s history, from the prehistoric era to the more recent one when showgirls shimmied across the stage.

Take a self-guided walk through the permanent exhibit, which houses a mix of real pieces and educational, hands-on props. Discover the period when dinosaurs dominated the desert and read about Nevada’s indigenous animals and flora and fauna. Learn about the early life of the Native American population as well as the first adventurers that sought out gold and silver in the Nevada mountains. The hands-on props of mining towns, wagons and settlers’ camps add to the experience, with actual personal effects lending a personal touch. The timeline of Nevada’s history leads all the way up to the more current way of life with displays about the city’s atomic history, the historic Westside, Helldorado Days and the building of the Las Vegas Strip over the decades.

Across from the permanent exhibit is the changing exhibit, currently hosting The Old Spanish Trail: Connecting a Network of Paths, presented by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Visually sift through wall panels, textiles and artifacts that depict the arduous

journey that many took to trade goods between what is now New Mexico and Los Angeles. The Old Spanish Trail was established in 1829, made up of crude mule paths and footpaths through what is now South West Colorado, Northwest New Mexico, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Southern Nevada.

The museum is filled with a treasure trove of pieces with interesting backstories, and here we’ve pulled just a few for you to peruse … but we suggest getting over to the museum yourself to discover all the gems it houses.

Before the crowded skyline of Las Vegas that you see today, the city was only mountains and valley as depicted here, in what is believed to be the first painting of Las Vegas from 1876. It was painted by Frederick Dellenbaugh, a young adventurer from Ohio who was on a mapping expedition and stopped by the Las Vegas ranch (seen in the painting) that was set up for travelers going to and from California. Besides this artwork, Dellenbaugh would go on to write two books about the Colorado River and the American Southwest.

American actress Clara Bow was Hollywood’s “It Girl” of the 1920s silent film era, but by the mid-’30s she would call Nevada home. In 1931, she married fellow actor Rex Bell, and together they moved to Searchlight, Nev., to open a working ranch. Hollywood wasn’t left too far behind, though, as seen here in her personal address book, where she kept many a famous name and their contacts, including Gone With the Wind director Victor Fleming and some of the bigwigs at Fox Studios.

In the 1870s, many Chinese immigrants settled in Nevada to help work the mines and build the railroads. Being so far away from their country, many of the Chinese re-created their homeland in segregated areas often called Chinatowns. An important part of daily Chinese life included religion; houses of worship were built and called Joss Houses. Seen here are three actual drums used for ceremonial music played inside a Joss House in Elko, Nev., in the 1870s.

The man who helped build Las Vegas, Howard Hughes first visited the city in the spring of 1953 and took up residence in The Little Green House that now stands on the property of local news station KLAS Channel 8. While Hughes only lived in the house for a year, he left behind many of his personal items, like the ones seen here (even his enema bag!). The items were recently donated to the museum. And, fun fact, you can see the inside of the house if you watch the movie Casino (it’s the actor James Woods’ home)!

What is this?

The staff of Nevada State Museum needs your help! Is this fan and its information recognizable? Recently, the fan was donated to the museum, but little is known about its origins. It displays a name and address, 2123 Jackson St., in the Westside of the city. Is it from an old casino, nightclub, social club or speakeasy? What was once at that address? The staff has done some research and has not been able to make any connections, so if you know, they ask that you reach out to the museum!

Check out these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry

With all the iconic landmarks on the Las Vegas Strip, the Tower at The STRAT stands as one of the most recognizable. It’s the tallest freestanding observation tower in the country, coming in at more than 1,000 feet. The STRAT is also home to a plethora of things to do on-property—one doesn’t have to leave to find fabulous food, top gaming, tons of heart-pounding attractions and a

great mix of entertainment. Here, we’ve picked three of our top spots.

We love the design of this restaurant because it transports patrons right to the funky back alleys of China where the bustling streets are home to some of the best hole-in-the-wall eateries. The immer-

sive CHI Asian Kitchen restaurant sets the scene for authentic and reimagined Chinese eats along with other Asian favorites. Signature dishes include the braised mushroom yee fu noodles, bulgogi fried rice, pork and shrimp spicy Szechuan dumplings, char siu BBQ pork and oxtail noodle soup. Don’t miss the red bean mochi, hand-rolled oolong tea and the sake and soju selections.

Chi Asian Kitchen photo by Anthony Mair

Visit the top of that freestanding observation tower and get your drink on at the highest bar in the city, 108 Drinks. You’d be hard-pressed to find another bar and lounge with the views you’ll soak in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. While one does have to purchase a Tower admission ticket to reach the bar on the 108th floor, you’ll find many specials throughout the week. Don’t miss Sky High Happy Hour from 3-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, where you can enjoy two-for-one Tower admission and two-for-one wine, beer and cocktails. Make sure you don’t miss the Bottomless Mimosas With a View Package every Saturday and Sunday. You’ll be able to enjoy as many of those bubbly, orangey cocktails while hanging inside or outside on the observation deck from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for only $28.99 per person. And, we can’t stress enough that you don’t miss purchasing a bag of gourmet dessert popcorn—you’ll want to scale the tower for more!

Two UNLV students loved stand-up comedy so much they decided to open their own club at The STRAT, the L.A. Comedy Club. The intimate theater that seats 270 guests offers comedy nightly at 6, 8 and 10 p.m. And what’s comedy without some liquor? L.A. Comedy Club offers a full bar and a lounge to hang at before each show starts (and after the show, where comedians have been known to come and meet the audience). You can even take selfies in front of a fake stage and microphone that’ll fool your friends back home into thinking you tried your hand at some stand-up comedy while in Las Vegas! All this week, catch comedians Bret Ernst & Friends, Butch Bradley and Julio Gonzalez as well as other well-known and up-andcoming comedians..

Indulge in decadent cuisine served with stunning fountain views from our rooftop.
