PROCESS Disciplines overlap in their individual processes. Material specific functions are internalized, while aspects of fabrication, building, design are overlapped. This allows for cross-pollination of trades and movement.

ASSISTED | INDEPENDENT LIVING BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA RESIDENTIAL MIXED-USE Retail and public gathering spaces are ingrained with the buildings program. A dialogue is established between the free, ever-changing expression of the public space, and the formal, structured program of the living facility.

SOCIAL INTERACTION Informal meetings between residents and pedestrians are facilitated by the open, free flowing layout. Constant interactions provide a much needed stimulus for the aging residents. PERMEABILITY

A large, transparent public event space extends over the site’s main corner, providing daily insight and views out to the surrounding downtown area. Lifted by an exterior structure, the ground floor is transparent throughout. Perforated panels provide a transition towards a more private living area.

captures

Columbus’s growing outdoor recreation scene. The Tower provides for retail and temporal residence, while putting recreation on display for the city. SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT The Tower extends pedestrian life off of Columbus’s main street, Broadway Ave. A public bridge connects and invites engagement while simultaneously providing space for a market beneath. Formal elements express and celebrate the activity contained within.

LY N C H P I N A key site between urban life and the city’s greatest asset, the Chattahoochee river, the Tower provides a landmark linchpin that connects the two assets.

Unassuming and stoic, the post stands its ground uninterrupted for decades. It has collected years of abuse from gravity and weather, only revealed through staining and a small chip or two in its face. A remnant of a once bustling neighborhood center, the post now only sees the activity of a sporadic groundskeeper. It presents itself strong as the day it was cast and formed, probably covered more than a few times by overgrown weeds and vegetation. Still, it performs its service; continually supporting two thin metal railings.

Radiating the summer heat, the slender metal railings have seen their own degradation. Protruding from the hip-level column, the rails hover over the grass below. Corroded and flaky, the railings echo the same neglect that the adjacent community has seen. The once glossy sheen is now muddled, catching flickering shade from the surrounding foliage. Bridging the small gap, the metal rails lie purposefully, providing a sturdy handgrab for passers-by.

Beyond the authority of the intentional structures, an unplanned tree marks the change between pavement and grass. The overhanging branches cast randomized patterns of shade over the ground and crawl up the post and railings. The tree juxtaposes the stringent, rigid character of the fence. Low swooping branches are formed by slow natural processes, opposing the mechanical and orderly manufacture of the fence. Smaller extensions from these branches sway in the wind, constantly reacting to and interpreting the natural elements that exist on the site.

All of these elements; the post, the railings, and the tree, are individually arranged and encompass their own character. They tell separate stories and histories. Closer examination reveal more detailed findings about their immediate surroundings. However, these components compose themselves into a larger element that begins to delineate space; creating thresholds and demarcations. The short post subtly marks the spot a small land bridge crosses a storm sewer. It provides a visual beginning and end to the bridge. Together with the rails, a fence is created. The fence reveals the length of the bridge underneath, and further, it creates a threshold between gravel and grass. The permeable threshold provides a sense of security through its presence. Beyond that threshold, the small tree acts as a mark for the transition between gravel and pavement. The tree extends the fence’s influence and provides a backing. The placement of the tree creates a cohesive boundary for the bridge, the fence, and the space between.
