The Liou Chuang, meaning willow stream, once had a natural spring within the inner city of Taichung, which be traced back to earlier period. However, the intimate relationship between inhabitants and the river has been changed dramatically due to the economic development needs of widening streets, urban plazas, and vehicular parking spaces, etc. In the Chinese painting, one often finds winding rivers are represented through leaving them as blank void spaces. This technique indicates that water body running from the upper part of the sky, which also very often would be left blank void as well, to the lower areas of the earth ground. This idea of blank void image of the river system seems to suggest that the water system has been purified and become a medium to up-lift inhabitants’ spiritual mind. However, this kind of romantic feeling has been blocked after most rivers in cities have been covered and polluted in today’s urban context.

Marvelous mountain ranges, amazing water systems, and warmest humanity, Lan Yang Plain exhibits these beautiful landscapes from the mountains to the sea beyond our imagination. Despite the beautiful landscapes in the region, the provincial 2nd main road served for vehicular and bicycle use of transportation has in fact segregated the relationship between the inner land village settlements and the surrounding seaside. The dune sandy hill, which was established to protect the provincial road from high tie of the sea, has further cut off the possible link between inhabitants and the nearby seaside. Hence, this project propose to intervene the section of the main road together with the dune sandy hill to re-link the existing settlements’ rich religious temple culture with the leisure seaside activities. This design proposal initiated a fundamental strategy for intervention of the area, which is to introduce a “bicycle based cultural exploration routs”. Those local cultural activities and festival events will be encoded with myth like secrete codes to intrigue tourists to explore these cultural events through interacts with local inhabitants. In this way, it is possible that tourists may have in-depth images of the study areas under concern.

Architect Hsieh Yin Jun: "Architecture students should be encouraged to participate in theatric performances, to experience those hardly visible elements and to perceive those intangible feelings." The workshop has the purpose of training participating students to get to know the real tectonic of materials through handy work and on site built. It is important to encourage students to experience various aspects of building materials, such as the temperature, dimensions, weight, and modular co-ordination in buildings, etc. These factors will be incorporated to create a buffer zone like semiopen space to re-link the existing factory and the surrounding natural environment. This colony shelter was constructed for local working labors as a flexible space to integrate the factory and the surroundings. In between the factory and the surrounding nature, a semi outdoor terrace has been constructed as the buffer zone for local workers. Due to the design site located in a quite humid and shady area, it is not appropriate to deploy solely with timber as construction material because timber will be easily become deteriorated in this humid venue. Moreover, considering the sustainable issue this project has tried to provide a steel frame structure and incorporated with recycled modular wooden board recollected from the surrounding building site. In this way recycled wooden boards can be replaced from time to time when they become broken and the steel frame would be good enough to survive from the highly humid environment. In this project concrete material for the terrace would not be considered as it is not a environmental friendly material..

The international workshop focuses on the recent development of the Taichung City and design site will be chosen from this city. A microfilm will be produced to present our team’s ideas on how the urban environment affects users including local inhabitants and foreign immigrant workers. The urban phenomenon of cultural perception and spatial arrangement will be firstly observed and a socio-environmental issue will be teased out in this microfilm project. Several technical interpretations on this project will be considered, they are the way of camera shooting, the storyboard key images illustrating, the narrative story, etc. Through these technical interpretations and the urban settings as background stage together with the local activities as actors, the socioenvironmental issue will be deconstructed. Foreign immigrant workers will play the major role in this microfilm presentation. The Taichung City downtown centre has become gathering spot for these immigrants in these few years. There emerges a new ethnic group settlement in this downtown area. In this project, two different groups of users, i.e., foreign immigrant workers and local inhabitants will be presented to illustrate each distinctive view on this city centre respectively. It is really interesting to notice the fact that the same urban settings would have different impact to different users. Local inhabitants could easily overcome an unfriendly and desolated urban environment, whereas it can be really hectic to strangers, the foreign workers, and become a forbidden zone. This is exactly the real problem occurred in the old city centre of this city.

Mumbai as a major metropolitan in India exhibits a strong image of complexity one hardly finds in other areas. Here one finds the coexistence of tradition and modernity, chaotic and order, extremely poor and utterly rich, etc. High density of population and high complexity of different ethnic groups have enriched the Mumbai metropolitan in terms of urban image and culture. This joint workshop enquires us to carry out detail observation on chosen area in Mumbai and to work out in team discussion to propose a possible intervention project for future development for the area under concern. In this exercise, space syntax approach will be deployed to carry out the socio-spatial analysis and to conclude with a proper diagnosis on the existing development issues of the study area. Finally, a proposal based on the examination of space syntax analysis will be introduced for purpose of sustainable development of the chosen study area. A fishing village was chosen for this exercise. On site observation has been carried out to mapping the physical environment, social economical development, and inhabitants’ behaviour patterns, etc. Collected Data includes figure ground mapping and urban block layout size, market types and locations, religious buildings and locations, etc. Through the space syntax analysis on the socio-spatial distribution patterns, it is noticed that the existing traditional market and fishing market both play important roles in underpinning the economic growth of the area on one hand, on the other hand they also become the crucial urban open spaces for local inhabitants’ social exchange places. However, this project has argued for an alternative to intervene some building blocks to create more efficient venues for visitors or outsiders to stay longer to have in depth understanding of the village. It is believed that outside visitors or tourists will be beneficial for the sustainable development of the area under concern. After re-examining with space syntax analysis, it is noticed that the new alternative would be able to integrate the two separated markets and even create a highly accessible open space for strangers and local inhabitants where one may expect to see the newly emerged commercial core centre of the area. In this new commercial centre, restaurants and retail shops will gather and this area will become the driving force of sustainable economic development of the village.

A New Type of Urban Formation – The concept is to turn existing urban plan and land using into three dimensions space zoning. Through figure/ ground diagram analysis of Taipei, it is revealed that the relationships between recreation, work and living spaces have being transformed from the originally close to disconnected; buildings were turn into singlefunction and isolated towers rather than multipurpose and continuous massing in early period. The proportion of black/ white in urban was changed along with the urban development and building height, while the gray areas of the intermediary space in the city are getting less and still exists only on the ground level. The main issue of this project is going to manipulate the boundaries of live, work, and recreation area, generating differentiated proportions of the public, semi-public or private spaces on every level from varied recreation area regarded as the main parameter.

This is a "multiple commonly shared residential spaces" design strategy. It intends to discuss the urban development transformation from the original multifunctional spaces exhibiting a closer relationship among residents into a single specific function. As a result, it has led to an alienated environment for local inhabitants. The design attempts to explore a possible analogy of a hierarchical spatial system between urban spaces and housing estates. From studying the figure/ground of urban fabric, it suggests to adopt the idea of continuity of urban open spaces and to translate it into a collection of residential public spaces for a housing project. In short, this experimental project will try to reestablish the forgotten neighborhood intimate relationship exhibited in the traditional dwelling context yet being disrupted in the modern urban society through converting the sequential urban open spaces, which one can easily detect from the figure/ground analysis on urban structure, into a multiple commonly shared residential open spaces system. In the vertical housing development in most modern cities, one finds the tendency of fragmentation of public spaces, which very often are left unused or deserted either in the ground level or upper levels of the housing community. Based on the Internet network-sharing platform concept, a sequence of networking-sharing public spaces, such as shared kitchens, study rooms, gardens, etc., has been introduced into the existing housing apartment. The network sharing platform is a modern communication and exchange interface integrating people’s ideas, which can be compared to the phenomenon of the traditional agricultural society that one easily notices the coexistence of diverse value systems with characters of symbiotic harmony. Therefore, a collective system of various sharing of public open spaces embedded in the housing apartment would provide a new platform to integrate local inhabitants to exchange ideas and to communicate to each other. Thus, senses of intimate and closer relationships of the traditional neighborhood can be reintroduced into this experimental housing project.
