HIGH COURT GRANTS CASE UPDATE

GMIT Students’ Union President Joe O’Connor was involved in the occupation of a senior office in the Department of Social Protection last Tuesday, November the 29th.

The latest is that the State filed a motion of opposition to the USI on October 28th. This motion was substantial and on that basis the court gave the USI 3 weeks to respond to its contents. The case was listed for mention again on November 25th, and counsel for the State applied for and were granted an additional 3 weeks to review the our reply affidavits based on their motion of opposition. Our counsel objected to the the 3 week delay but the judge decided that it was appropriate.

The occupation went on for just over 2 hours before the Gardai forced entry through the barricaded door and arrested the 4 occupants at 6.41pm, and they were detained at Store Street Garda Station until approximately 9.30pm. The files have now been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). USI President Gary Redmond, and the SU Presidents of UCC and IT Carlow were the other student leaders who locked themselves in, refusing to leave until the Labour Party clarified it’s position on increased college fees. Joe was also present for an earlier occupation of the Department of Jobs & Enterprise as nine student leaders from across the country, which lasted only roughly 15 minutes before the Gardai managed to remove the protesters from the building.

The case is now listed for mention again in 3 weeks and we have informed counsel for the state that at that stage we will be insisting on setting a date for hearing, and we are hoping to have a confirmed date for a hearing for early next year before Christmas. As it’s a judicial review most of the arguing takes place prior to the hearing, back and forth in the form of motions and counter-motions, but it should be relatively quick once it gets to a hearing, most likely a one-day session.

This amounts to a complete shredding of the USI Pledge signed by the Labour Party just days before the general election, and a betrayal of students, parents and families across the country. The students had a real appetite for knowledge. They were constantly pushing things forward, learning from projects they worked on and questioning the decisions they made with regard to their own products.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Food Appeal Date; Time: Location:

Thursday December 8th 2011 10am – 2pm Union Square, Dublin Road Campus, GMIT

St Vincent de Paul is looking for YOUR help to feed the poor / hungry / disadvantaged people in Galway City this Christmas. The Hotel School is offering YOU the opportunity to donate to this worthy cause. Students and staff will be at the above Location to facilitate you dropping off Non Perishable Food Items suitable for the festive season. St Vincent de Paul asks that nothing is wrapped. St Vincent de Paul have encouraged us to ‘think outside the box’ and donate items that will make Christmas a little bit special for our needy brothers and sisters, (Peas, Beans, Spaghetti etc) are not particularly exciting, however practical. May I be bold enough to suggest some of the following items: Christmas napkins, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, Tins of biscuits, Tins of sweets, Christmas crackers, Mince pies, Fruit juice, Christmas paper, Selection box, Coffee, Tea, Pringles, Crisps etc. etc… (no alcohol please). This is by no means a comprehensive list but from the above you may be able to purchase something small while doing your shopping over the next number of days. Imagine the difference we could make collectively if each of us were to purchase some items / item from the above list or other suitable Christmas items and donate these on Thursday December 8th 2011 in Union Square. St Vincent de Paul will collect all donated items and distribute these to the less privileged members of our society who need help this Christmas. On behalf of the Hotel School and St Vincent de Paul I would like to thank you sincerely in advance for your generosity. P.S.: We will have a number of buckets available from 10am – 2pm to allow those of you who have an aversion to shopping drop-in food vouchers OR make a cash contribution on the day, on the basis that every little helps particularly for people who have little or nothing. Sincerely, John Long (Lecturer, Hotel School, GMIT).
