Editor’s Letter Hi all and welcome to the latest edition of GMM – and yes, it’s Christmas! The cold, winter nights have set in, the decorations are up and we are all feeling sorry for ourselves because the snow has wrecked the majority of our plans for the last two weeks. But if you aren’t quite feeling the Christmas spirit whilst waiting for your train, sitting at a bus stop or working late in the office, take solace in the fact that you have managed to grab a copy of this month’s magazine. Her debut album Rockferry has sold over 6 million copies worldwide, not to mention the numerous awards she has collected over the years that keep her mantelpiece warm at home – hard to believe it was only two years ago that the girl from Wales burst onto the scene. people in the past I have felt really alone. I never felt alone with Albert. I felt as though I was in the hands of someone truly exceptional.” Fans are sure to be excited to hear Duffy’s latest musical project, her soulful and open songs on Rockferry are what set her apart from other artists. Great tracks like ‘Mercy’ dominated the radio waves for weeks, whilst the brilliant ‘Warwick Avenue’ was based on a real life situation with an ex-boyfriend. So can we expect an even more personal feel for the new record? “I don’t know. I don’t know about this being a personal record, I don’t think there is such a thing. I think you’re so emotionally engaged and emotionally involved in what you do as an artist when you write the songs. I don’t know if it’s more personal but of course through the experiences I’ve had, I’ve possibly learnt to become a bit more eloquent on how I say things more directly, that’s something that I feel as though I’ve experienced.” Fame came quickly to Duffy. It seemed one minute she was touring small clubs across the UK, desperate for a break and the next she was playing to tens of thousands of people in Glastonbury. It wasn’t long until the girl tipped by BBC’s famous Sound of.. poll was becoming a favourite of the tabloid newspapers.

Now the 26-year-old is back with her second album “Endlessley”. And the pressure of following up on her platinum debut was a task the blonde beauty relished, revealing she couldn’t be more excited about the next few years in her fledgling music career. “I think the next few years in my life are going to be the telling years as to who I truly become as an artist. It is one thing being catapulted on the public scene and people’s consciousness it’s another thing really setting your mark as you develop through the years. So, yes, I’m very excited because I really think this record solidifies certain parts of myself that I’ve needed to solidify.” Duffy co-wrote the new album with legendary singer/songwriter Albert Hammond, after striking up conversation with the veteran in a chance meeting. A match made in heaven according to the pop star, “For me it was just like a wild card,” said Duffy. “Who knew that we were going to write a whole record? It was just a chance meeting, we sat together and thought OK, hi, how are you? It was never set in stone that we were going to become the best of friends and so I look back and think, wow, such an important introduction and I just didn’t realise how important this character was going to become in my life. When I’ve worked with

And a high-profile relationship with Welsh rugby star Mike Phillips hasn’t done much to distance her from the showbiz columns of newspapers. In fact, there was a point when it all got too much for the down-to-earth girl from Nefyn, who was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and considered becoming a recluse (an idea she turned her back on as she thought she would let down her fans). So how is the songstress coping with tabloid headlines and fame two years on? “I don’t really pay attention actually. I like to form my own opinion of myself. If I was searching for myself in others, I think I would be very lost, even more lost than I have ever been so I just shun away from it to be honest. I do my work, keep my head down and try to avoid any speculation.

“There are always upsides and downsides to fame. The upside is being a young woman and standing in a room of very important people and they listen to you. When you have any kind of success, you earn the right to have your say and I’ve wanted that for a very long time. It was very difficult at 19 to convince people I knew what was best for me, so now I’m getting closer to that. If I think about the down sides of fame, I guess it’s the fact that nothing can be erased. Whatever you do will stay around forever; from this interview to whatever you do in your private life. I’m very cautious of that. “I’m fully aware that it could always be something that I regret; when I look back when I’m 60 because of the age of the internet. I’d have to look back at myself coming out of a nightclub really drunk and half naked. That’s why I’m very cautious of doing those things. I try to keep my private life to myself, so that I can keep my vices to myself…If I’m going to go out and be young and wild. I just can’t afford to do it because it will jeopardise what I stand by.” Despite trying desperately to keep her private life private, Duffy admits the stability of a long-term relationship has helped keep her grounded. “I think Stability is really important for anybody in life. The finer things that keep you grounded and make you feel safe wherever it might be and whatever it is you do and 10

so for me I definitely feel as though I’ve got something to hold close to my heart that even when I’m thousands of miles away from the place I call home, I have something I feel connected to.” Duffy puts her new found peace of mind down to surrounding herself with “good people” and admits she now feels content with her fame and being in demand. “It’s nice to be in demand,” says the singer. “As long as I’m good within myself, as long as I’m surrounded by good people that make the experience pleasurable. Through my life, if I look back, I know there will be people who would read this and appreciate what I’m saying. “The hardest thing about my job is the trying to be in different places, the knowing that you have a global demand. That can be so daunting if I allow myself to think of it.” If you think about the toughest times, it was because you were working with people, or you were surrounded by people that just weren’t right for you. I need good people otherwise I can’t exist. “Fame is hard but I know this is where I want to be. When I stand in front of 60,000 people, I feel as though I have earned it. I’ve worked from 150 capacity venues all the way through to what you see today, so I definitely know what its like to be on stage,
I’ve been on it thousands of times now, so I don’t feel as though it’s a place that is alien to me. The stage feels quite peaceful and happy.” There is one thing that the international superstar is struggling to deal with – being an international superstar! “The hardest thing about my job is the trying to be in different places, the knowing that you have a global demand. That can be so daunting if I allow myself to think of it. The fact I’ve got to make a trip to Japan, back to New York, back to L.A, then again to France, back to Germany or go to Australia, all the while wanting to remain a British artist. The workload is fine, I quite enjoy it. I’m a bit of an insomniac! I need to give a lot to feel as though I’m contributing.” So with the album just weeks from release, Duffy reveals although she is excited, he has never understood why people have taken to her like they have.

I really don’t know what I have to offer and what my appeal is, it’s something I will never understand, and that again goes back to a lack of selfawareness. I know what I’m good at, I know what I’m not good at, but how other people accept me is completely up to them.” Duffy is clearly one of the most talented artists to come out of Britain in ages. Great songs, good looks and a down-to-earth persona to boot, the girl from Wales turned out alright.

With Christmas coming close and the dark nights coming in it has been busy, busy, busy for us photographers. The cold nights have meant we have had to stock up on some essential tools for these tough winter stake outs, so for the next few weeks I will not be seen dead without my long johns, hat and gloves. There is a lot of waiting outdoors in this job, you need to be prepared! Apart from the cold, this month has been very eventful with the announcement that Prince William has decided to tie-the-knot with girlfriend Kate Middleton. So imagine my excitement when I got a tip saying Prince William was getting out of a big old bus with a gang of lads going in to the Blackpool v Wolves match. All units were called and we went to the game in force. Are excitement was soon dampened when we were greeted by special branch officers. They came over to the pap’s and told us if we followed the Prince we would be held in jail for 48 hours. That was enough to scare most of the pack away, but I’m not just any photographer. It wasn’t long until we had another tip that Wills had decided on a trip down the fair. I didn’t get any photos on the Prince on any rides as they closed the park for him but we managed a few great snaps whilst he was coming out – a Christmas treat that I couldn’t have dreamed of! On that note, this is my last column of 2010 so Merry Christmas everyone and have a Happy New Year.

If you are looking for a fun, energetic dining experience this Christmas look no further than Sakura Japanese Restaurant and Bar. The eatery, based in the prestigious Walker House at Exchange Flags is two years in the making. And it seems from our recent visit that it is two years very well spent. Popular with Liverpool’s business fraternity, Sakura is now becoming a hang out for Liverpool socialites, footballers and soap stars and is very much a place to eat, drink, celebrate and be seen. There’s a large array of fish, meat and chicken specialties here, plus the restaurant is housed with tanks filled with a great selection of fresh seafood.
Juggling the sharpest kitchen implements I have ever seen, knives flying everywhere – I didn’t know whether to enjoy the show or duck for cover and pray for my life. Thankfully Suriya knew what he was doing – there is nothing like watching your food being prepared in front of you whilst being thoroughly entertained at the same time. For the main, we stuck with the Chicken Teriyaki (Corn Fed Chicken Fillets with Teriyaki and sesame served with fried rice). Although originally looking like a small portion, the dish was more than filling and a delight to digest. There were also choices of Australian Sirloin (Sirloin of Beef Sukiyaki with garlic and sweet potato), and Scottish Salmon (Scottish Salmon with Teriyaki and schichimi) available to sample, which other diners did and enjoyed immensely.
Restaurant Review The exterior of the building is enough to attract anyone’s attention. When arriving on a chilly Friday night, I could not help but be impressed by the small yet delightful terrace area outside. Although covered in snow, a place I could see myself spending a lot of time during the summer months. The interior wasn’t bad either. A pleasant bar area greets you on arrival before you are shown to one of the grill stations. A grill accommodates 8-10 people so if you are looking for a quiet meal, look elsewhere. Greeted by the charming Head Chef Girish Gopalakrishnan, we soon decided to tuck into the brand new Christmas menu on offer. For starters, a large bowl of Akadashi (Red Miso Soup with Tofu, Spring Onion and Wakame), although initially scared of the thought of having seaweed in my soup, the taste was pleasant and a good choice to get the tastebuds tingling. The main course is when the fun begins. Our chef Suriya took to his grill like some kind of kung-fu warrior. 20

Finally, dessert. When I first caught a glimpse of the small tray consisting of a mini chocolate fondant, a square of light chocolate sponge cake and a cleansing raspberry sorbet I wondered when the real dessert was coming. I needn’t have worried as this was one of the best desserts I have ever tasted. Not too heavy, this tray of treats complimented the previous courses perfectly. Our wonderful experience at a close, we could not thank our chef enough for his efforts, a fine personal touch which sets Sakura apart from most restaurants. With the Christmas menu priced at £25pp (considerably cheaper than a lot of places in the city centre), Sakura is real value for money. It really is a treat to dine at this restaurant. Food, staff and venue are all excellent. If there is one place you are going to dine this Christmas, make sure it is Sakura.

Why being single at Christmas isn’t so bad With the run up to Christmas I have noticed a sickness spreading like wildfire. A sickness which is far worse than your standard winter cold, one which I thought was most common in the run up to Valentine’s Day. Yes, you guessed it, love sickness. Every person whose relationship status is set to ‘single’ on Facebook has decided that being alone during the festive period is a deadly disease that must be cured immediately. I found myself asking; ‘Why on earth is it so important to have another half at Christmas?’ The usual, predictable answers came flooding in. “I’m sick of getting asked if I have someone yet at family Christmas parties”, “no-one goes out over Christmas because they are all poor”, “it’s cold at Christmas and it’s nice to snuggle up to someone” – and no, I am not making these answers up. In fact, a recent study found that 69 per cent of single people feel most lonely over the festive period. Now call me crazy but why would anyone jump into a relationship to avoid this apparent embarrassment of being alone when December 25th comes around on the calendar? I, for one, am a single man and fully intend on being a single man when Santa Clause brings me my lump of coal on Christmas Day. People automatically assume I will be drowning my sorrows when the festive day comes about with a bottle of Jack Daniels, listening to my James Blunt CD whilst crying about my loneliness and the fact nobody loves me. After all, I was, until recently in a long-term relationship. Five years of having someone there in the run up. The excitement of picking out presents for them, wondering what they will get you, sitting in on those cold, winter nights watching rom com’s and Christmas specials. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy having someone there for Christmas – after all, even Santa has Mrs Clause to snuggle up to after he’s finished delivering all those presents. “Yes, being in a relationship at Christmas is most definitely not all it’s cracked up to be...or all you singletons out there, the urge to rush into a relationship should be resisted.” And when the day does come, waking up next to your other half, seeing the look of excitement on their face when you produce an expertly wrapped present and then the look of disappointment when they realise you have given them a framed picture of yourself, oh how I miss Christmas romance. 22

But let’s cut through the stereotypes and remember things which aren’t quite so great about being in a relationship throughout those cold winter months. The inevitable argument of whose family gets the pleasure of having you two for company on Christmas day. The fact that as nice as it might be sitting on the sofa with your feet up, you really do not want to watch ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ for the 34th time in two weeks. The cost of buying that lovely necklace she’s been hinting she wants, knowing full well if you don’t splash out Christmas will turn into Couch-mas. Yes, being in a relationship at Christmas is most definitely not all it’s cracked up to be. That’s not to say I am a crusader for the single guy or gal, determined to shun all forms of intimacy – and I certainly do not turn my nose up at people who are in relationships at Christmas. But for all you singletons out there, the urge to rush into a relationship should be resisted. Christmas is full of opportunities. Firstly remember, there are plenty of single people in exactly the same boat. With the inevitable single blues you could be getting lucky with someone who is usually way out of your league! That gorgeous guy or gal you have been eyeing at the bar has decided that whilst you are most definitely not the one, you are the one for the night. Secondly, when the day comes and you are round at your mums, you don’t have to worry about having one too many, you don’t have to worry about rushing around to your other halves to see her rents and you certainly don’t need to bother about doing something “nice” with your partner on boxing day when all you really want to do is recover from your Christmas day hangover and prepare for your girlie/lad Boxing night out. And the worst part of rushing into a relationship at Christmas is when the festive period finally ends. Not only are you stuck with that naff jumper from Aunt Betty, you are also stuck with a guy/gal who you realise was never right for you in the first place. And that means the inevitable break up, the embarrassment of telling your family that nice guy Jerry who you were so in love with and knew so well was not actually the guy you thought, especially after you found his stuffed animal collection. Yes, just like a dog, a relationship is not just for Christmas. So singletons, enjoy yourselves, if a relationship comes about, great, if not, thank your lucky stars you are not stuck with someone like “nice guy” Jerry.

In other news this month I’ve been a busy bee! I have attended two fantastic fashion shows, one was an EAD Solicitors charity evening for Children In Need, The Night raised thousands of pounds for the charity and I was just glad I was a part of it. The other show was one showcasing three of Liverpool’s top designers, Miss Francesca Couture (who featured in GMM exclusively two months ago, Claudia Pink and Lola Loves. It was a great show with some amazing new designs.

On a more personal note my daughter Savannah was an extra in Hollyoaks! I was so proud of her, she will be on TV the Tuesday after Christmas, hopefully this is the start of a long prosperous career for her and she will be taking me to the Oscars one day! This month also saw the launch of my cupcake range with Campcupcake. Yes my very own cupcake range! I had the launch party at Circo’s restaurant. There were a lot of great performers on the night including former X-Factor stars Estrella, Kof, the Canary Cage burlesque dancers and Billie Clements DJ-ing It was an incredible night and I can’t thank everyone who was there enough. Until next month, I hope you all have a fab Christmas and New Year

We sent our reporter Lissa Sian to try out Voodou’s new pamper package for Christmas....

here is nothing more important to me than my hair. Forget high heels and make-up, hair is the original symbol of femininity and I always make a feature of it. I’m fiercely fussy with my lovely long locks but I’m not adverse to change, so when I was invited to be pampered, preened and groomed at the celebrated Voodou Hair and Beauty, I jumped at the chance. The award-winning salon offers every kind of haircut and colour imaginable with a comprehensive list of beauty treatments too, and what’s more – it’s all under one roof, a customer’s dream. Voodou on Bold Street boasts a huge openplan interior and is everything you’d expect from a modern salon with added touches of luxury evident in the sumptuous leather chairs and twinkling chandeliers. From the moment you arrive the conscientious staff will cater to your every wish and whim, whether its choosing some suitable reading material or serving you a range of drinks including wine and beer. Perfect if you want to get the party started. And that’s exactly what it feels like as soon as you enter, the party’s already in full swing and everyone’s on the guest list, because the place is literally buzzing with people. “From consultation to conclusion, it took her just under an hour to give me a curly blow dry that could rival any Hollywood starlet.” The stylists are young, funky and slick which can be quite unnerving to the more conservative customer looking for a blue rinse and a perm but they needn’t worry as all the expert hairdressers have a wealth of knowledge and experience that belies their youthful appearance. My hair was in a fragile state when I first visited the salon. I’d just finished a 10k with my personal trainer and had haphazardly screwed it up into a messy bun. I felt so sorry for my lovely stylist Lois who had the mammoth task of unravelling my curly knotty hair. But ever the professional, she said “Don’t worry” with authority. “We’ll make it look gorgeous even if it takes all day.” 28

Luckily it didn’t take all day, in fact the whole process was very speedy. From consultation to conclusion, it took her just under an hour to give me a curly blow dry that could rival any Hollywood starlet. Instantly turning me from raggy to ravishing. “Sweet beautician Toni showed me downstairs to the basement beauty rooms ... you’ll feel instantly relaxed surrounded by the calming music and burning essential oils.” No easy feat when you think about the preparation to be done; a brush through of the hair before it’s washed, then two soothing shampoo’s and a nourishing conditioning treatment, a comb through with some serum before finally getting to grips with some blow drying wizardry. I can’t compliment her enough. As part of my pamper package I opted for an eyebrow shape and tint and lash extensions to finish the look. Sweet beautician Toni showed me downstairs to the basement beauty rooms which are a stark contrast to the excitement of the hairdressing floor and you’ll feel instantly relaxed surrounded by the calming music and burning essential oils. Fortunately I’m an old veteran to the pain of plucking, so a routine wax and tint of the ol’ eyebrows is nothing new, but if you’re not then Toni’s gentle manner and explanation of the process will put you at ease. Which was good to know having never had individual lash extensions before. I was a little apprehensive at first but her technique was so quick and flawless that any fears over the reality of having tweezers so near your eyes are soon gone. And so with fluttering lashes, tinted ‘brows and glossy tresses I was ready to hit the town and let my hair down, so to speak. There are always moans and groans when the news that a well loved horror film is going to get the remake treatment. Whether it is a pointless shot for shot update like Psycho, or upping the gore levels in a ‘reimagining’ of any 70’s or 80’s horror with any name value whatsoever, they always just seem like a cheap and quick way for Hollywood to make an easy buck with minimal original ideas. So when the news came that Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In, adapted from John Ajvide Lindqvist book of the same name, was going to be Americanised, the negative reaction was hardly surprising. Let The Right One In is one of the most critically acclaimed horror films from anywhere in the world in recent years and last month named by The Guardian as the eighth greatest horror film of all time. So it seemed quite obvious that any remake was doomed from the start. Right? Well not quite so. First of all, lets be clear. Let Me In, the second film from Cloverfield director Matt Reeves, which tells the story of the strange friendship between lonely bully victim and voyeur, Owen (McPhee) and Emily (Mortez), who has been twelve for a very long time, is not as an accomplished film as its Swedish counterpart, but it certainly isn’t the cheap Hollywood fodder that was feared. The acting by its two young stars for starters is quite fantastic.

After both having the 2010’s best child break out performances in The Road and Kick Ass respectively, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Mortez have here marked themselves out was two of America’s most promising performers. Smit-McPhee and Mortez both bring depth and sympathy to each of their characters plight, which highly enriches the emotional connections to the young couple. It is they who carry the film, and its success firmly lies on their young shoulders, and they both pull it off. Like in many films which focus on youth, the adults are either absent parents or incompetent authority figures. Owen’s Dad is only a father by phone, and his Mother, when on screen, is always distorted or out of focus, highlighting her insignificance, and her son’s isolation. The relocation to mid eighties New Mexico also works well, with President Reagan telling the world about America’s legacy of evil setting the tone. Like the original, contrast between light and dark is a major theme, and the white of the snow against the red of blood is just as startling here. Predictably, Reeves film is more explicit than the original, not that is not actually a negative. Clearly a confident director, Reeves ups the blood and violence, and shows he has an eye for the macabre visuals with sliced ears, frozen ice coffins, acid burnt faces and burning woman populating the screen.
However, this does not take away that this is a character driven horror film, a rarity nowadays, and a film that does not alienate its audience by showing unnecessary amounts of gore. While it is never truly terrifying, it is moody, atmospheric and unsettling in ways that the Saw’s and Hostels of this world could only dream about. In fact, some of the more upsetting scenes are those that have little blood, were Owen’s physical and emotional bullying at school is quite heartbreaking.
Like all great horror movies, the musical score is key to highlighting mood and suspense. Light and soft when developing Owen and Emily’s friendship, but cranks the tension to unbearable levels when the time is right, particularly when a policeman comes knocking at the door investigating the recent murders. Whether John Ajvide Lindqvist’s book needed a second cinematic adaptation isn’t really the case here. What is though is that Reeves has not taken the normal remake approach, and has crafted a first rate film that is both powerful and shocking as it is at times beautiful and emotional. Let Me In may not be given the accolades that it’s Swedish predecessor has received, but is still one of the finest American horror films in recent years.

One of 2010’s biggest surprises, and its undoubtedly best comic book movie, came from pretty much nowhere. Loud, violent, foul mouthed, very funny and full of soon to be iconic characters. Aaron Johnson’s Kick-Ass journey from bullied teen to jet pack wearing superhero is a fun one, but he at times is overshadowed by the support characters. Hollywood’s current go-to British bad guy Mark Strong is on form as a mob boss, as is Christopher ‘McLovin’ Mintz-Plasse, as his son and wannabe superhero Red Mist. But the film really belongs to the father-daughter vigilante team of Big Daddy and Hit Girl, Nicholas Cage and Chloe Mortez. Cage, doing a hilarious Adam West impression is fantastic as the slightly deranged Big Daddy. But it is Mortez you’ll always remember. The thirteen year old assassin “Hit Girl”, dropping the ‘c’ word as easily as she drops legions of bad guys, is probably 2010’s most memorable character.

The second Nicholas Cage film on the list arguably contains the best performance of the year. Cage seems to have been on autopilot for the last few years, putting in half-arsed performances in average films. But this is Cage back to his best. With that crazy look in his eye that has been absent for far too long, as the very bad Lieutenant Terence McDonagh is simply an over the top hoot. But Cage’s performance isn’t the only crazy thing here, the entire film seems to be tottering on the point of insanity. Notorious German director Werner Herzog has installed some sense of craziness into nearly every frame with the souls of the dead break dancing, iguanas who listen to soul music, and policeman who do very bad things. The film is darkly humorous, so much so that the laughs are almost guilty ones.

The Dark Knight is released and is widely praised as the greatest comic book film of all time, makes over $1 billion at the box office and currently stands as the 7th highest grossing film of all time. As a reward, Warner Brothers essentially said to director Christopher Nolan, “here’s some money, go make whatever film you want to”. The film he made was Inception. A dazzling, complicated, mind blowing movie. A cool as anything cast headed up by Leonardo Di Caprio, the premise is that Di Caprio plays a man who steals ideas from people’s dreams. It made over $800 million, which surely tells the studios something… 34

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a remarkable film. Director Niels Arden Oplev has crafted a superior thriller and odd ball romance. Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and goth computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (a fantastic, career making turn by Noomi Rapace), are investigating a forty year old disappearance. They make a very odd couple, if you can actually call them a couple. But the pair drive the film forward, and with its twists and turns, complete with moments of uncomfortable of violence, which are more at home in a Hostel film. Oplev has made an exciting, shocking picture, and one of the best thrillers seen in the world in recent years!

If there was one film everyone hoped would live up to expectations, it was Toy Story 3. Because of early plans for it to be a straight to DVD sequel, and the long period of time since the second, there were some fears that it was just going to be a cash in, rather than because Pixar had another story to tell. No-one needed had to have worried. In what is arguably the greatest cinema trilogy of all time, Pixar gave us maybe the best threequel of all time. Continuing the story with Andy going to college and deciding maybe it is time to let go of his beloved childhood toys, we find Woody, Buzz and co at Sunnyside day-care centre. Trying their best to escape from Sunnyside, and Tim Dalton’s Mr. Pricklepants, we get what we have come to expect from the series, exciting set pieces from the go, jokes that will delight young and old, and moments that will have you reaching for the tissues. With over a $1 billion at the box office, for once the highest grossing film of the year is genuinely the year’s best. Simply magnificent.

‘Tis the season to be jolly…or is it? Or are you like me and absolutely dread this time of year?
don’t like Christmas. Sure, the festivities have their perks; the time off work, the presents and, yes, I too have a stocking…but I get mine from Agent Provocateur ;) But essentially it’s the season of financial strain, family tensions, phoney celebrations and lets not forget being another year older and none the wiser. Call me what you like; Grinch, Anti-Claus or Scrooge, I don’t mind, because -I’m sorry to burst your baubles- but Santa ain’t coming to town, the night won’t be silent and what the hell is Myrrh anyway? “You often see tables of workmates being forced to enjoy each others company in some restaurant booked especially for the occasion.”
You would be amazed at how people react when I tell them I hate the holiday, like I have committed some hideous crime, but I know I’m not alone. The day itself is always an anti-climax. If you’re like me you’ll be slumped in front of the TV by 5pm, plumped up on Turkey and booze, watching routine Christmas specials wondering if it would be bad manners to log on to Facebook. (It is by the way) That is of course if you get involved in the whole charade in the first place. Some folk I know opt out of the whole xmas shindig altogether. They’re usually single and free from having to appease their partners and parents. I call them the ‘Jingletons.’ Diligent objectors who abstain from the whole Yuletide season. The lucky so and so’s!

I’m not so lucky. I’m obliged to partake in the family festivities and my ‘rents go for it at full throttle, with tinsel, bells and twinkling lights on top. If I could get out the Manger I definitely would, but I can’t and I’m already cowering at the post-Christmas-dinner conversation with rellies which begins, “So, what’s new with you?” I hate all this chat because in front of your nearest and dearest, I’m forced to admit, “No, I’m not in the perfect job, haven’t got the ideal boyfriend and no I still don’t know what I want to do with my life.” It’s the same tripe trotted out every year. If that’s not bad enough there’s always the office bash to get positively jubilant about. Not. “Everyone’s in the party spirit, although the girls look like they’ve already eaten all the Christmas pudding and the fella’s are more knackers than crackers.” You often see tables of workmates being forced to enjoy each others company in some restaurant booked especially for the occasion. Fortunately I don’t have that problem, I like all my colleagues, and we always have a riot. But I know some have it hard and are summoned to endure all-night bender with people that could cure insomnia. The people they would rather not speak to all year and they can’t bloody stand because they are too dreary, too weird or just really get on your tits. Bless them.
Everyone’s in the party spirit, although the girls look like they’ve already eaten all the Christmas pudding and the fella’s are more knackers than crackers. I always marvel at the dreadful clothes among the women: sequins, metallics, sheer blouses and trousers that exhibit a cake shelf rather than a muffin top. You see them with their fake smiles, air and arse kissing their way around the room with their “Oh don’t you look fabulous” crap comments. Their hypocrisy stinks more than their cheap designer imposture perfume. “I know it sounds like I’m whinging but I suppose I’ve just become tired with the blatant commercialism of Christmas.” And usually all that comes after the Secret Santa carry on they have to get involved in. It’s always the same novelty tat purchased for under a fiver. Some of the more cheerful will receive their gift like it’s been given to them by one of the three wise men but I find the whole farce tedious. Probably because when I joined in one year, I got lumbered with a less than imaginative Cat calendar and a card adorned with a handbag and shoes. Not me though, I chose something a little more tongue in cheek, a garish novelty mug which read “Bitch”. The recipient laughed, I mean it. But the night’s not over. There’s always one female who will end up sobbing into her Sherry before anyone’s had a chance to crack open the Yulelogs. And if the guys haven’t dragged someone off to the toilets then the jolly boys always end up in some themed strip joint, Lapdanceland or something of a similar ilk. You know the ones, they’re always promoted as a naughty mans Narnia but in reality are more grotty than grotto. The blokes are greeted by a bevy of aptly named babes, Prancer, Dancer and Donna, who bare enough flesh to give the lads a look at their robbing red breasts. It doesn’t take much until the lords are leaping to see these ladies dancing. Oh the joy of it all. I know it sounds like I’m whinging but I suppose I’ve just become tired with the blatant commercialism of Christmas. I don’t need a fake tree and abundance of tinsel to remind me to visit my Grandparents, buy gifts for those I cherish and see my colleagues drop clangers of Pantomime proportions. I do that all year long.
And here it comes again, but if I have to celebrate it, perhaps I’ll have my own solo party this year. I’ll fix decorative baubles on my pussycats collars and they can watch me sink a glass of eggnog sludge while I dance around to Slade in cheap felt antlers. Christmas time...Hand me the Valium and wine.
