Editor’s Letter
Hi all and welcome to the latest edition of Goss Media Magazine. The summer is coming to an end. Yes, the bucket and spades, bikini’s and beach towels are being packed away for another year but at least you lot still have us. And to keep you entertained throughout September we have brought you our best issue to-date, packed with exclusive interviews, great fashion and beauty tips and much, much more. Our cover star is the new pop sensation Sky Ferreira. The 18-year-old beauty used to hang out with the King of Pop Michael Jackson and counts Katy Perry amongst her personal friends. Our reporter Simon Boyle managed to catch up with the youngster to discuss her new single “One” as well as her colourful upbringing.

And ladies, if your man suddenly decides to become a theatre buff this Christmas, we know why. Baywatch star Pamela Anderson will be appearing at the Liverpool’s Empire theatre this Christmas to reprise her role as the Genie in hit show Aladdin. We caught up with Pam to chat about Baywatch, bikinis and boozers in an exclusive interview on page 22. But calm down ladies, whilst your man is of the theatre why not treat yourself to a spa day at the fantastic Chill Out Spa in Knowsley? We had the pleasure of popping by there recently and it really is the ideal place to relax and unwind, especially before the stress of Christmas shopping! If that wasn’t enough for you we have great interviews with chart toppers The Wanted and the quirky Eliza Doolittle. All the regulars are back including Dan the Pap, Lissa Sian and Amanda Harrington. Movie reviewer James Thomas has also been busy checking out the action movie of the decade The Expendables. This issue is not one to be missed, so if you have got your hands on a copy then congratulations. If you want to be sure to pick up a copy of GMM every month why not subscribe? (See page 33 for details). So as always ladies and gents, sit back, relax and enjoy the best read of your entire life.

because the mix of artists working together can make some incredible sounds.
Sky is already proving to be a shrewd businesswoman, and even turned down offers from huge record labels in order to keep her musical freedom.
“Obviously now I’m really honoured to have met him, and I know he enjoyed my performance because he cried at the end of it and told me it was beautiful. That’s a pretty special memory now.” But self-assured Sky has no plans to follow in the superstar’s footsteps, and hopes to become a musical icon in her own right.
“
She added; I’m sick of being compared with other people. Obviously it’s flattering when someone says you could be the next Madonna, I absolutely love her music, but everyone has been influenced by her. I’m not interested in becoming a clone of someone else, even if they are a legend. I know how I want my music to sound, and it’s got to be totally unique. That’s why I love working with other people,
“
I didn’t want to be manufactured into someone I’m not, that would make me really uncomfortable. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing people, and that’s given me a great education in the music business. Linda Perry (the brains behind hits by Christina Aguilera, Pink and Gwen Stefani) has been a huge influence, and I loved every minute of working with her on my album. I even contacted some amazing producers myself, including Bloodshy and Avant (Britney Spears’ producers for Toxic), who totally understood my ideas. They produced my debut single ‘One’, they made it really easy to express myself.
“
“
I hated school, and I’d have been ready to commit to my music full time by the time I turned 15, but eventually things just happened naturally.
the undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson her grandmother worked as his personal hairstylist for nearly thirty years. But despite the presence of a world famous musical icon, Sky joked, “I didn’t really realise who I was singing to - he was just my grandmother’s friend.
“
A
t just 18, quirky American songstress Sky Ferreira could be forgiven for showing her nerves - but the ultra-confident teenager already seems right at home in the spotlight. Singled out by many critics as this years one-to-watch, sultry Sky can count Katy Perry amongst her celebrity pals, and her debut single “One” has become a summertime anthem on BBC Radio 1. And the brunette starlet revealed she’s more comfortable amongst A-List stars than she ever was at school. In an exclusive interview with GMM, LA-born Sky explained; “I always knew I’d make a career out of my music, I’ve been blessed with confidence and I hope that I can use that to push me forwards.
“
I’ve always wanted to be a popstar, but I don’t really want the fame that goes with it. I love what I’m doing, but I can’t cope with being under scrutiny all the time. I still need to enjoy being young.
With her debut single out August 23, the dizzy heights of global stardom could be just around the corner. But the teen starlet isn’t banking on a Lady Gaga style assault on the world’s music charts just yet.
“
She says; I don’t want that kind of fame, and especially not overnight. I don’t know whether I could cope with that kind of media attention. I’ve become friendly with Katy Perry though, we are on the same record label, and she seems totally cool with being a superstar, so maybe I could get used to it after a while.
“
But despite a worldweariness, and a wisdom beyond her years, Sky subtly reveals her uncertainty about fame and fortune.
friends, but I’m happy about who I am, and I’m sure there will be plenty of time for that in the future. If I do meet anyone, it will have to be a much older guy - someone more on my level than the men I’ve met my own age, who still act like young boys.
“
“My dream would be to work with David Bowie, or Jack White from the White Stripes, but I’ll just have to see how things turn out.”
“
While her confidence and maturity suggest Sky is totally comfortable with life in the fast lane, there’s sadness about her which betrays her uncertainty.
“
I didn’t really have many friends at school, she reveals, I was always too focussed on my future to really fit in. I’ve never really had time for going out with friends or dating boy-

AUTUMN/WINTER BEAUTY TRENDS WITH CHILL OUT SPA “Eyelash tinting is a fantastic option for busy women.”
A
s another wishy-washy summer draws to a close, we can console ourselves by embracing the new seasons’ trends. Whilst the catwalks are full to the brim with autumnal threads, it’s the trends adorning the faces of the models that we’re interested in. Gone are the sun-kissed, coral hues of high summer and welcomed in are rich, plummy autumnal reds and natural skin. We all want to look our best in every season, and feel great inside and out. Read on for expert advice on how to achieve the autumn/winter 2010 top trends. A resounding cheer could be heard from the side of the catwalks recently as show upon show confirmed that the waif look is long gone, and womanly curves are here to stay. A celebration of the female form was a recurring theme throughout fashion shows this summer, with cinched-in waists and smooth silhouettes being the name of the game. If your bikini diet fell by the wayside this summer, fear not – you can still achieve killer curves in time for autumn. Owner of Knowsley’s exclusive Chill Out Spa, Sharon Carroll, caters for a raft of prestigious North West names and the popular Thalgomince Body Wrap can kick-start weight-loss and toning.
14
GMM
Sharon explains: “We see a lot of customers opting for treatments like our Thalgomince Body Wrap in summer, but it’s also a very popular treatment before the autumn and winter party season.” “The treatment includes a dynamic massage using Thalgomince exfoliator, then a sculpting massage to diffuse the active ingredients. Afterwards, a warm body mask is applied and the results are fantastic. The treatment tightens and tones, giving the perfect silhouette for that LBD or pair of skinny jeans.” Natural glowing skin was emphasised with striking red lips and dark eyes, though this autumn your definition will come from kohl, kohl and more kohl as mascarafree peepers are the favoured look. You may feel that wild horses couldn’t part you from your beloved mazzy, but before you run screaming for the hills, ponder on other more palatable options. Some of us are naturally blessed with Disney-esque fluttering lashes, for the rest of us – well – where to begin? Eyelash tinting is quick, affordable (usually cheaper than high-street mascara), lasts up to eight weeks and doesn’t wash off in the rain.
To book a treatment at Chill Out Spa, please call 0844 9670 599 to speak to a member of the team. Alternatively, please visit www. chilloutspa.co.uk for comprehensive details of treatments and packages.
“Eyelash tinting is a fantastic option for busy women on the go” says Sharon, “it can transform your face, lift and brighten your eyes and is hassle-free for up to eight weeks. Chill Out Spa provides not only this, but also eyelash perms to curl and shape lashes, and eyelash extensions in a range of lengths to create lashes with real wow factor.”
The CND Shellac manicure uses a revolutionary system of UV setting lights and specially formulated polishes to promise a perfect manicure lasting up to a whopping 14 days. The manicure has no drying time, meaning it is much faster than usual manicures and there’s no chance of chipping or cracking.
To complement the striking looks, a natural, glowing base is a must. “It’s so important to look after your skin at all times” advises Sharon, “but especially so when the seasons change. The drop in temperature in autumn, coupled with the increase in central heating can play havoc with your skin.”
To get your nails ready for autumn, why not follow Stella McCartney and opt for nail colours in peaches and pinks. If you want to be really on trend, then go nude – choosing nail colours that mimic as close to your skin tone as possible.
“We advise monthly facials throughout the year in order for clients to maintain healthy looking skin, tailoring facials to any changes in the skin’s make up throughout the seasons. If you haven’t had a facial for a while, or have yet to achieve the perfect glow, then we’d advise an Oxygen facial – it’s perfect for tired, dull, clogged up skin and will invigorate and clear out toxins for a perfectly smooth complexion in no time!” Chill Out Spa is situated in the idyllic rolling grounds of the magnificent Knowsley Hall. The sumptuous spa is a world away from the stresses and strains of city life, yet is a mere 20 minutes drive from Liverpool city centre. Already attracting attention across the UK for its wonderful location, elegant surroundings, exceptional treatments and service and high quality products, Chill Out Spa has earned a name for itself as the spa for discernable indulgence. Sharon continues: “We love sending a customer home feeling completely pampered, relaxed and wonderful after an afternoon with us. The team work very hard to ensure that all customers receive optimum care whilst with us, and we are delighted that many of our customers regularly come back for more pampering!”
So, as the shop rails fill up with this season’s must haves, stay ahead of the game and transform your look whilst staying bang on trend (and enjoying a little pampering too!), because as the saying goes – you’re worth it.
Exclusive GMM reader offer: Free eyelash tint with every facial booked throughout September 2010. Please quote ‘GMM
OFFER’ when booking.
“We’ve recently introduced CND Shellac manicures to our beauty team’s repertoire – it was only released in the UK in June and we were quick to snap it up. We are constantly looking for innovative and diverse treatments for our clients, but we remain faithful to classic, proven treatments too.” Follow our GMM fan page on Facebook

Dan the Pap With things being quiet in Liverpool over the summer I decided to hit the big smoke recently. Me and a few pap’s decided to catch up with one of Liverpool’s most well-known faces, the gorgeous Emma Rigby. Sadly, our trip to the capital was a nightmare from start to finish. I missed my first train by three seconds, then when we got there we missed Emma’s debut in the West End play Wolfboy. Devastated by our bad luck The Mayfair hotel was next on the list, but I let the side down again when realised I had no batteries in my flash. Day two was meant to be Leonardo DiCaprio day. But after hours of waiting and no joy so we headed back to Liverpool with our cameras between our legs. Back home things picked up. We bumped into big bad Mike Tyson in Liverpool. After initial fears for my life it turned out “Iron Mike” was one of the nicest guys I’ve had the pleasure to meet. That’s all for me this month – look out for the next issue when I will be telling you all about my trip to Ibiza! In the meantime check out my website www.danthepap.co.uk

5 Questions with The Wanted The Wanted are the hottest new boy band about right now. Consisting of Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker, and Nathan Sykes, their debut single “All Time Low” rocketed to number one in the UK singles chart. With their album due to be released in October, GMM caught up with lead singer Max George for a quick chat.
Q A
Hi Max. How does it feel to have a number one single under your belt?
Absolutely incredible. I still can’t quite believe it. One day your working towards trying to get that big break and then in an instant you are number one in the charts, I’m made up. It is a surreal feeling.
Q A
The single All Time Low, tell us a little bit about it.
The song was produced by Steve Mac and basically poses the question of how do you deal with breaking up with someone who you are madly in love with? How do you recover from that All Time Low?
18
GMM
Q A
Have you ever experienced an “All Time Low”?
Yes! When I was about 17 I met a girl on holiday and I thought I was in love with her and everything was great, but then everything fell apart and I was devastated. The best thing to do is just dust your self off and try and move on.
Q
You have been linked with Saturdays star Vanessa White – any truth in the rumors?
A
At the moment I am a single man and I’m enjoying it. I live with the rest of the band so the place is like a bit of a bachelor pad – bras and knickers everywhere!
Q A
What celebrities catch your eye at the moment?
There are so many. My two favorites are Cheryl Cole and Pixie Lott. Cheryl might be a bit hard to get hold off but I fancy my chances with Pixie. She is incredibly fit so I’m hoping I can bump into her one night and work the charms.

RestaurantReview Chaophraya Royal Thai Fine Dining
L
et me start by saying, I have never really been one for Thai food. My favorite restaurants are usually Italian or French and I have generally stayed away from oriental food for the majority of my life. So when I was asked to try out the menu at Liverpool One’s trendy Chaophraya restaurant, I have to admit, I wasn’t overly anxious to attend. But any doubts I had were brushed away as soon as I walked into the place. The building and the decor are enough to take your breath away, never mind the curries. Chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, an array of dark browns and reds covering the walls – forget eating, to admire the decor is good enough. But eat we must. Our waitress greeted us warmly and showed us to our upstairs table. The place was relatively busy and the tables are slightly cramped but the general feel of the place was stunning.
20
GMM
The place boasts it will provide you with “a true gourmet experience and the real taste of Thailand”. And let me tell you, if this was a real taste of Thailand, I shall be moving there very soon. At first I was skeptical so I decided to order what I perceived to be the “safe starter”, the poh piah phed. The poah piah phed (£7.50) are spring rolls filled with roasted duck, taro, carrot, and leek and served with hoisin sauce. As far as spring rolls go the poah phia phed were by far the tastiest I have ever had the pleasure of devouring. I was worried that this starter might be a bit bland but for me it was perfect and set me up nicely to tuck into my main course. My female companion decided to start with the tempura, or pak thod to give it its proper name. Yes, big red pepper and onion rings in a light batter. I stole a taste and it made me realise what I was missing out on.
This starter really did melt in the mouth and my lovely friend was lucky she had any starter left after I’d had a taste. The ladies and gents toilets are very interesting in Chaophraya. Separated by a humongous fish tank, the ladies can watch you as you check yourself out in the mirror, so no giving yourself the cheeky wink before you arrive back to your table, trust me. As for the main courses the waiter recommended the Chaophraya Jungle – a very spicy, apparently very healthy curry dish. King Prawns served with green papaya, young banana, hot basil, red chili and young pepper. At £14.50 it was expensive but a treat to the taste buds. If a spicy curry is your poison then you will not be disappointed. The King Prawns were succulent with the red chili and young pepper giving the dish a zany kick. The combination of flavors was heaven for the taste buds, especially with a bottle of red to wash it down with.
My date decided against a curry and opted for the Gai Nutty – a chicken dish marinated with lemongrass, honey, Kaffir lime leaves and coconut milk, grilled and served with a peanut sauce (£13.50). My lovely companion also found her dish to be thoroughly enjoyable. The chicken, she said, was grilled perfectly whilst the lime leaves and the coconut milk prevented the dish from being too dry. All in all Chaophraya is an absolute gem of a restaurant. The food tremendous and the service top notch. If you have yet to try out the delights of this wonderful eatery you truly are missing out.

Pamela Anderson Keep a look out this year during your Christmas shopping because you just may end up spotting Baywatch beauty Pamela Anderson.
.................................................................................................................................................
T
hat’s right, the former Playboy Playmate is taking over Liverpool this December as she takes to the stage at the Empire Theatre in her role as the Genie of the Lamp in Aladdin – and Pam cannot wait! “I made great friends last year when I performed in London,” recalls the Canadian. “I had a lot of fun and I can’t wait to do it again in Liverpool. It is a beautiful city, I read about it being the European Capital of Culture for 2008 - and I am a Beatles fan of course so it will be great to spend some time here.” The theatre is just another string added to the legendary stars bow after being an actress, model, producer, activist and an author - there is not much that she hasn’t done over her 20+ year career.
22
GMM
From being discovered at a local football game in Vancouver, Pam was thrust into the lime light and hasn’t looked back since. Born to a furnace repairman father and waitress mother in the small Canadian town of Ladysmith, British Columbia, she left her working-class background behind her at the tender age of 21.
Pam’s biggest role came when she landed the part of C.J Parker in hit TV show Baywatch – watched by a staggering 1.1 billion people perweek. But the 43-year-old has decided to ditch TV for good and plans on concentrating on other aspects of her career. “There is no more television for me. Baywatch was fantastic and it’s hard to top that. “I just want to concentrate on doing fun stuff that I enjoy for now, like the theatre!” I think I am at a stage where I have to think about the important things in my life now. No more prancing around in bikinis for me.” So Pam is swapping her Baywatch bathing suit for a more comfortable red leotard as she prepares to grace the Liverpool Empire stage. And she is already planning on taking the grand tour of the city on the orders of her friend Henry Winkler aka The Fonz! “I want to have a little fun this year and maybe even add some dancing to the show, who knows. My friends tell me I am really going to have a great time here.” Says Pam.
Interviewed by Adam Coffey
“
I remember Paul McCartney gave me the first Linda McCartney Humanitarian Award, which was really special to me. We’ve had a lot of contact and he’s a great animal rights activist, a great person so I hope I can visit the Cavern and do all of the Beatles stuff
“
................................................................................................................................................. “I even had a chance to check in with my friend Henry Winkler (who played Captain Hook at the Empire last year) and he had nothing but great things to say about the people and the city”. The mum-of-two admits her first wish as Liverpool’s hottest genie is to find a boozer she can spend some quality time in after the show.
And Pam already has a special relationship with one of Liverpool’s most famous sons. “ I remember Paul McCartney gave me the first Linda McCartney Humanitarian Award, which was really special to me. We’ve had a lot of contact and he’s a great animal rights activist, a great person so I hope I can visit the Cavern and do all of the Beatles stuff”
“Whenever I get to a new city I always want to go to a pub first and I‘ve got to get some chips and vinegar! I’m Canadian and we have lots of similar things, so it’s nice to come here”.
For Pam, this is an exciting new stage in a legendary career that has spanned over two decades. And ladies, if your man suddenly turns into a theatre buff around Christmas time, we all know why.
The Beatles fan certainly doesn’t intend on being cooped up in a hotel room whilst she is not on stage. “I don’t like to isolate myself in a room. I’ll be running around, causing trouble.”
*Aladdin comes to Liverpool’s Empire Theatre from the 10th December 2010 to 11th January 2011.

Doolittle
Eliza
We caught up with Miss Doolittle before she tours the UK in October 2010 and asked her a few quick-fire questions.
Q
You must be really pleased with the success of the album so far, did you ever expect it to take off so quickly?
A Q
I didn’t expect it at all; it’s kind of unbelievable really. I’ve not quite got my head around it yet.
You are just getting ready to start your first ever headline tour across England, you must be very excited?
A
Yeah really excited, the first time doing my own tour. It’s what I always wanted really, so I’m really excited for it.
Q A
How much control over the locations did you have?
Well my booking agent booked the locations because as much as I’d like to say every venue in England I don’t. But I wanted venues that were really intimate, so people who have been following me from the beginning could experience the type of shows that I’ve been doing my whole life. It’s not about making money right now, it’s about people hearing my music and creating that atmosphere. In the future I always want to try and make sure I mix up venues, I don’t want to stop doing the intimate venues but at the same time I want as many people as possible to hear my music.
Q A
Are there any locations you would have particularly wanted to play at?
I don’t know much about other venues in England but in London we are doing Bush Hall, which is a venue I have always wanted to play in.
Q
You’re coming up to Liverpool to play at the Masque Theatre, will this be your first visit to the city? Do you plan on having a look around if you have time? 24
GMM
A
I’ve been quite a few times actually, it’s one of my favourite British cities. I’ve done writing up there before as well. If I’ve got time then I will definitely be having a look around.
Q
You co-write every track on your record, did you have to battle with the record company to make sure that you were involved in the writing process or did they give you a lot of freedom?
A
I was always a writer, I was signed as a writer when I was 16. Those songs are me. It’s not something I had to fight for, I think they knew what type of artist I was. The label is a great label, all of their artists write, it’s quite a classic label in a way.
Q
Many musicians decide to move into acting and you yourself have had a background in performing arts, is there a possibility of seeing you on the big screen in the future?
A
Right now music is my priority, but I’m a never say never person. I haven’t really thought about it though, it’s not really what I do.
Q A
What are you opinions on the X Factor and did you ever audition for the show, or one similar?
I’ve never auditioned for anything like that but I think they are a bit of fun really. But it can get annoying when the whole chart is taken over by the X Factor, it’s a bit annoying when you can’t get anything else in at the same time.
Q
There are rumours in the press that Simon Cowell is planning on releasing the audio from the live Saturday shows into the charts every week, which could - in theory - mean that there are X Factor contestants taking up every top ten chart position every week for 2 months leading up to Christmas. Obviously this could have a big affect on new and upcoming artists - like yourself - if he did this, what are your thoughts?
A
That would be a bit difficult wouldn’t it! It’s a pop takeover basically. I think pop is fun, I consider my music to be pop but when you get that much thrown in your face it’s really scary. You get some amazing acts but it’s like a needle in a haystack. Like Leona Lewis she is an amazing singer so it’s good when people like that are found.
Q A
You have been mentioned a lot for your good looks, what are your beauty secrets?
I don’t know if I’ve got any secrets! I’m still learning. I’ve always worn make up but never as much as what I’m wearing now.
Q A
What do you look for in your ideal man?
I think the ideal man should have a strong personality - know what he wants but also be kind and loving as well.
Q A
How would you describe the last year being Eliza Doolittle?
A whirlwind I’d say. A gradual one at first but it’s suddenly gone a bit mad in the last few months, it’s been a lot of fun and I’m really enjoying myself.
Q A
What are your plans for the future?
I just want to keep making music. I’m already writing the next album and maybe I’ll release an EP in between the albums - I don‘t know. I just want to make music forever, that’s my aim.

I jetted off to Monaco a couple of weeks ago working for Playboy France. Monaco was a lovely place and but unfortunately there was a thunderstorm and my plane was delayed by 5 hours.
............................................... As for my social calendar back in Liverpool – I’ve recently been to see Hairspray which was amazing. I also attended the launch of the brand new Living Room which was great so watch out for it! That’s all from me so enjoy the rest of your summer and I’ll catch up with you all next month.

Here at GMM we are constantly on the lookout for new stores in the city and beyond that catch our eye. With vintage clothing and accessories currently the flavor of the month with all you glamour queens, we decided to pick out two of our favorite stores that we think will rock your world.
he first business that caught our attention is the fantastic Lemon Flirt. Lemon Flirt specialises in handmade jewellery and was created by 21-year-old Rosie Brooks. Promoted mainly through social networking sites such as Facebook, Lemon Flirt is the ideal place if you are looking to pick up a unique piece of jewellery. Every piece Rosie makes is a one of a kind. “I find the customer gets pleasure from knowing the necklace or the ring they are wearing is unique and I really like that” says Rosie. “I think that is what sets my company aside from a lot of the high street stores, there are some lovely pieces of jewellery but they are all the same. When you own a piece of Lemon Flirt Jewellery you know you are not going to see that on someone else.” Rosie has come a long way in the past few years. She first started putting her skills into practise at the age of seventeen. “I’d take charms off necklaces I didn’t like or add chain to the ones that were too short and I really enjoyed messing about with different pieces of jewellery,” she recalls. “I begun having ideas for jewellery that I decided to put together myself. I would go to charity shops and buy bits and pieces there, ask family and friends for any old unwanted jewellery. Then I’d take it all to bits and put it together to make something different.”
As her obsession grew, Rosie decided to put pictures of her lavish creations on Facebook. Within days a host of her friends were pestering her for pieces of her jewellery and in a matter of weeks Lemon Flirt was born: “I got a hell of a lot of feedback from Facebook,” recalls Rosie. “People liked the stuff I made and were interested in buying it. At first it was mainly friends and friends of friends. But soon I started getting a lot more interest from all sorts of people. I created my website and started selling through that. Soon after this a few of my friends organised a local fashion show and asked if I’d be interested in having a stall there with my jewellery. This is when I realised I could make money through selling my jewellery.” Over the last 12-months Rosie has showcased her talents in craft and vintage fairs and her jewellery is now stocked in various shops including Love Frocks and Tocco Beauty Clinic in Runcorn. The ambitious youngster is already looking towards the future and her next step is to open her own shop. In the meantime, if you are interested in checking out some of Rosie’s fantastic unique jewellery, checkout her Facebook page -facebook.com/lemonflirt or email her at lemonflirt@mail.com.

ur second store is Preserved Vintage Clothing. Preserved started out as just a part-time job for Scousers Lucy Baxter and Emily Fell. The pair met in high school and always had a flair for creating the eccentric. “We always had an eye for things that were a little bit different, not necessarily “vintage” but something that is unique or that not a lot of many other people have,” says Lucy. “On our lunch breaks in School we used to go to the charity shops to see what we could spot.” In 2005 the girls decided to invest in a small stall in the Liverpool Heritage Market, originally to pass time before starting university. But things started to snowball for the ambitious duo and within weeks Preserved was created. Lucy recalls: “We got a little stall in the Liverpool Heritage Market five years ago. It was meant to be a stopgap after we left college to give us something to do until University started! But then we started getting a lot of attention and customers were coming back every week. We decided to carry on until Christmas because we thought it would be busy and we haven’t stopped since. We both went to Manchester University, so we would have to get the train back every week to set up shop.” Things have got better and better for the two girls, and last year Preserved moved premises to the lively Grand Central shopping centre.
And customers will no doubt be pleased with the variety of vintage available to purchase. T-shirts, fully beaded evening wear, accessories, hats, belts – you name it these girls stock it. But with the array of Vintage stores about at the moment, what sets Preserved out from its competitors? Emily enthuses: “We always make sure that we keep an eye out for what is in trend at the moment. And then we often buy our stock according to that, this means the customers get stuff that can be seen as being in trend yet it is made out of much better material from 30 years ago and it will be rare to find anybody else wearing it - and for half the price.” Preserved Vintage is one of the gems of Liverpool and the girls plan on expanding their empire to other parts of the country in the near future. Lucy says: “We want to concentrate more on the internet side of it. After travelling around the country and being a part of all the fairs, we are getting our name out there, so it would be great it we can start distributing more around the country to people who like us but we will keep the store as a base because it is a great location.” If you would like to find out more about Preserved Vintage Clothing check out their website www.preservedvintageclothing.com or type in “Preserved Shop” on Facebook.
So ladies, if you are looking for a vintage piece of clothing, or a unique piece of jewellery, make sure these two stores are the first on your list to check out – ignore them at your peril!

Director: Sylvester Stallone Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin. Screenwriters: Dave Callaham and Sylvester Stallone Certificate: 15 Running Time: 108 minutes

irst things first, the much anticipated on screen coming together of the Eighties’ three biggest action stars, and the men behind Planet Hollywood, Sly Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnie, literally lasts about two minutes and is nothing more explosive than a few wisecracks and a couple of in jokes. That is the only time we see The Governator and the Die Hard legend in the whole film. It’s a perfectly enjoyable scene, but it’s hardly Al and Bobby in the coffee shop in Heat, and doesn’t exactly warrant their names on the posters. However, this is one of the few bad points in what is otherwise a very enjoyable film. It may be quite dumb, cheesey, have a bog standard action movie plot, but with its tongue firmly placed in its cheek, it is often quite funny, and always very enjoyable. Despite the limited screen time of two of the biggest names, there is still a fair amount of fire power in Stallone’s group of hard knocks who are trying to rid a small Central American island of their oppressive drug lord (see what I mean about the bog standard action movie plot?) Joining Rocky/ Rambo is the former He-Man and Ivan Drago, a kung fu legend, a former UFC champion, the biggest British action star around, and er, the star of Everybody Hates Chris and Norbit.

Ok, so they are not quite The Magnificent Seven or The Wild Bunch, oh but these aging stars can kick some ass. Which is basically the point of the film. A throwback to the seriously violent, loud and sweary, muscle-bound action flicks of the eighties. None of the modern day attempts to make every film a 12A for commercial reasons, or skinny Oscar winning actors like Adrian Brody trying to be Arnie. Just good, old fashioned action. And even with the majority of the 108 minutes containing some form of violence, it never gets dull or repetitive, with Stallone continually mixing it up with car chases and fighter planes happily married to all the fist, knife and gun fights you could possibly wish for. Eric Roberts, as the ex CIA agent turned drug baron, is hardly the greatest action villain ever seen; however ex wrestler Steve Austin makes up for it by being his more than capable muscle, having some of the films best fights with Stallone, and also in the inevitable smackdown between the former WWE and UFC champions, Randy Couture.
Of course, the film isn’t perfect. The plot is nothing more than an excuse for lots of fights, the script doesn’t have the wit of a Die Hard or Lethal Weapon, massive plot holes are covered up by very convenient and unbelievable devices, such as an ex comrade telling all the enemy’s secrets seconds after Stallone puts a bullet a few inches from his heart, and the only time anyone in the cast comes remotely close to anything resembling acting is when Mickey Rourke sheds a tear when recalling the regrets of combat. Don’t worry, Sly, Dolph,The Stath and the rest don’t bother with this acting thing. Speaking of The Stath, our very own Jason Statham pretty much steals the film from under the noses of his more famous continental costars.
Clearly loving every second of being Stallone’s right hand man, he gets all the best lines, beats up gangs of people at a time, doesn’t need a gun ‘coz he’s that hard and is quite handy with a knife, and is the only expendable who has a glimmer of their domestic life shown. It’s clearly never going to win any Oscars, or any award for that matter, and despite being obviously flawed, Stallone has created a violent, funny, old school action movie, which should delight everyone whose heart sank when Die Hard 4 and Terminator 3 were watered down and released as a 12.

Thrills & Spills
“
There is a pattern emerging. Men keep showing me their penises. Now, some would say that I shouldn’t complain, but what I’m talking about is a display without good reason. Penis without provocation and I have had enough.
“
Let me start by opening the debate and this question is strictly for the girls. Have you ever seen a schlong without asking for it? In the last month I’ve had the displeasure of viewing three unsolicited ding-dongs. And surely that’s not normal. In fact, so troubled by this quota of unwanted appendages, I began questioning myself; is this something I’m putting out there? Have I got something inadvertently tattooed on my forehead that says: “I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours?”
“The final straw came when I was having my nails tendered and I was sent a picture of a penis”
The first time was on a recent jaunt to Spain with my old school pal Lucy. Imagine the scene. We’re in a rustic restaurant quaffing a crisp glass of Chardonnay, sitting on a gorgeous mosaic terrace, surrounded by trails of Petunias and Geraniums, basking in the balmy evening sunlight over a vista of azure waters. We’re deep in conversation when our idyllic setting is rudely interrupted by a guttural drunk in a Diadora tracksuit and his wife arguing like they’re on the set of Jeremy Kyle.

It was hard to hear but I managed to deduce the following; the chav-tastic wife ‘Irene’ was irate with her hammered hubby’s behaviour after getting them ejected from a restaurant down the road. I watched open-mouthed as she roared at him, her dentures clicking like castanets and pointing her sovereign-clad finger in her pissed-up partner’s face. I accidentally caught his glazed eye. He began meandering his way towards our table, coughed a transient rainbow of germs in my direction, pulled down his shell-suit bottoms and gave the plants next to us a watering of his own - like it was the most natural thing in the world. He was the foulest creature I’ve seen all year. About a week later, I was returning home late at night when, 10 meters from my apartment, I came upon another bloke performing this unattractive ritual: peeing in a doorway. I was stepping into the road, tutting and muttering to myself, giving him and his ever-increasing puddle a wide berth, when he turned around, swinging his pathetic piece in the air and yelled out at me: “Suck it.” Diabolical if you ask me, but I wasn’t in the mood for a fracas. The final straw came when I was having my nails tendered and I was sent a picture of a penis. I was enraged. That really was the wrong side of enough and I decided to teach this moron a lesson.

But first some background info that later becomes very important. I’d been on two dates with this guy- let’s call him J. No sex, no fondling, no kissing even. Actually, you couldn’t even call them dates; we just used to hang out. God knows he tried his luck in the usual gentlemanly way; dinners, champagne, chocolates and flowers but I wasn’t interested and no amount of gifts was going to change that.
“That thing will never be put anywhere except the palm of your hand and possibly the occasional Watermelon or Russian sex doll.” You’d think he would have got the message when I never returned his calls but I guess he must have an IQ lower than the number of his limbs. Instead he decided to send me a snap of himself stark naked in his bedroom mirror, qualifying his actions by saying: “This is just in case you never get to see me in the buff.” Now, I am as far removed from a prude as they come, but really what is this phenomenon whereby men have to brandish their bratwurst around? I am astonished when I think about it. It’s a disgrace, disrespectful. Can it be that in today’s Britain, this is acceptable behaviour? Revenge ensues. Firstly, I text him back saying: “That thing will never be put anywhere except the palm of your hand and possibly the occasional Watermelon or Russian sex doll.”
“It looks like Jeremy Beadle’s withered hand”, “I’ve seen more meat on a butcher’s pencil” “Has that guy got an innie?” Secondly, I called my best friend V and told her to come over to my apartment. I showed her the photo and after a serious bout of laughter, we decided right then and there, it was just not on. We would see how cocksure J really was. We reasoned, J was obviously so pleased with his nether rod, and so willing to show it off, then
why keep it hidden? What harm could it do if we shared it with a few hundred strangers? Not only did we post the picture on Facebook and tag this awful cretin - making it instantly appear on his profile - but we also tagged 50 of our mutual friends, so they could join us in our mocking. As you can imagine, as soon as J got wind of our scheme he was utterly distraught. Such was his mortification that he deleted his Facebook account all together. But really, what do you expect when you send a pic of your pecker to a manipulative witch like me? I can tell you it caused quite a stir and some of the jibes left on the picture were hilarious. Try these on for size. “It looks like Jeremy Beadle’s withered hand”, “I’ve seen more meat on a butcher’s pencil” “Has that guy got an innie?” - Everyone was in unison; it was nothing of which to be proud.
So guys, before you think it is a good idea to send a picture of your pecker to an unsuspecting female, think again.

The Carpet King of Texas is a fast-paced, shocking, salacious book that takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride through the lives of three unsavoury characters. It is the debut novel of award-winning journalist Paul Kennedy and at times is so disturbing you want to put it down – the sad fact is, it is impossible to do so. Described by others as “Trainspotting for the Viagra generation” this fast-paced novel is the most enjoyable book I’ve had the pleasure of reading since Irvine Welsh’s classic novel – some feat considering Trainspotting was released in 1993. Whilst set in Liverpool, forget about the home of the WAGS, there is no fashion, glamour or champagne lifestyle for any of the characters in this book. Dirk McVee the self proclaimed “Carpet King of Texas” attends a conference in Liverpool and explores the seedy underworld of our very own Capital of Culture 2008. Jade is an escort with a love for easy money, partying and a penchant for cocaine. JJ is a drug addict who has dragged his young son down the same, warped path. The most surprising thing about the book is the unexpected sympathy the author creates for even the worst characters. There are plenty of laughs - Dirk pausing mid orgy for a smoke and chatting business with one of the participants shows that even the most depraved times have their mundane moments. Drink, drugs, sex aplenty are explored in some depth so if easily offended, don’t give it to your 84-year-old grandmother or religious Aunt Betty to read 38

Although slightly seedy and a bit graphic, this book is a heart-wrenching look at a darker side of the world the majority of us only think about in our nightmares. The Carpet King of Texas is a brilliantly written book that propels the reader into the lives of individuals who, despite being worlds apart on the social scale, are on parallel journeys to a common end. If you do not own the Carpet King of Texas, you are missing out on one hell of a read.
