Matt’s home waters are Neely Henry and he has a wealth of knowledge to share about Neely with his Flippin the Coosa River seminar. Courtesy of Fish Neely Henry and Bucks Island.
JEFF SHELTON
TIE YOUR OWN SKIRTS
Returning to his day to day job as a fire fighter after winning numerous previous tournaments over the years, fellow fire fighters would ask him how the tournament went to which Shelton’s response was always, either “I spanked ‘em!” If he didn’t do well in a tournament, he would always say “I got spanked!”
Fast forward to the FLW Series in 2006 at Smith Lake. Jeff placed 2nd place and had the heaviest weights on day 3 and 4 with his very own jigs and shaky heads. The camera guy that was with him throughout the day asked if he could buy some of his baits to use back in Minnesota. He gave him some to try out and a few weeks later received a check in the mail, making his first sale. Sparking an idea.
While on duty at the fire station, he asked the guys about a possible business name and it was unanimous. Thus, Spanker Jigs was born!
GREG MATAKAETIS

AARON CHURCHWELL GEAR/TECHNIQUE BLUE CATS
Aaron grew up in southwest MO, fishing ponds, rivers, and lakes for sustenance. He knew right away fishing was something special to him. He bass fished pretty heavily up until the age of 18 and joined the Army. Aaron didn’t fish at all for 9 years while in the Army.
When he got out he moved to Rome Ga and learned about Striped Bass spending almost 2 years trying to master the elusive Striper. Then he had a buddy invite him to fish a catfish tournament with him on the Coosa. They didn’t win that day but it sparked a fire that nothing can put out. Aaron now chases these slimy apex predators all of the country fishing tournaments. Hoping that next bite will be a Giant.
SHAW GRIGSBY FINESSE BASS FISHING
One of the most popular, well-liked anglers in the country, Florida native Shaw Grigsby entered the MLF Bass Pro Tour with a competition resume that includes nine wins, 64 Top 10s and more than $2.3 in career winnings. When Shaw is not fishing, he loves to go hunting for deer, duck, turkeys, snakes, mushrooms and even gators.
MOUNTAIN MAN DUCK DYNASTY
On Friday, March 9th, Duck Dynasty star Tim Guraedy who is best known to the show’s millions of hard-core fans as “Mountain Man,” will be making an appearance at the Alabama Fishing Show! Meet in person the slow-talking air-conditioning repairman/radio host who is a neighbor to the Robertsons, the Louisiana family that made a fortune from its best-selling duck calls, and around which the show is based.

“The food here is absolutely amazing!! I have never eaten rice without some type of sauce this rice I can eat all day on its own. The inside is so clean and well-maintained. The employees are so kind and happy to help. In some restaurants especially drivethrus the employees look and act like they hate their jobs and everyone. If you want kind, happy people and amazing food then this is your place. Did I mention a drive-thru!!! The food has always been hot and fresh!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!” -Google Review

This is not a large establishment but they use their space well. I enjoyed the atmosphere they created, it was warm and inviting. I asked my server for recommendations on appetizers and she told me her favorite, The basil wraps which I decided to try and they were exquisite. For dinner I ordered the garlic and black pepper chicken and it was very good as well. The staff came around a refill drinks and a check on the meal and was overall very courteous and professional. “Rarely do we try a new place that leaves an impression like this. The staff told us all about their products, where they’re made and the concept behind this place. Everything from tea, smoothies, coffee, frappes and some drinks I’ve never seen before. They also have a few food items. The manager told us they were mixing the vibe of a traditional American coffee shop with a Vietnamese, Taiwanese and Korean culture. We both had a caramel latte which was full of flavor not watered down like some places. The coffee was from Vietnam and is a little stronger. This place is really cool and different from your average coffee shop. Great concept.” -Google Review
“Love the environment, not too quiet, not loud either. Drinks are priced very well! We love coffee shops, I wish they offered a kids area (coloring books or something simple) so we could hang out in there bc my daughter and nieces loves going for the boba or frappes. Other than that, we love this place. Ever since trying their quality coffee & their caffeine free/healthy drink options, we have dumped StarBucks after our first try here! It’s better to support local small business anyways, but feels better when the quality is amazing. Makes it much more worth it. If you haven’t been, give it a try!” -Facebook Review

“This is a spacious and clean with ample parking, restaurant but let’s talk food. The roasted wings are seasoned just right, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. If you don’t like sauce, these have a lot of taste and without the mess. The ranch dressing is homemade and delicious. Smoked Cuban Sandwich, this was a pulled pork and smoked ham sandwich, very good combination. The onion rings are perfection. Evenly cut onion slices, Light flour batter and not greasy at all. Added to my review… lunch specials!! The chicken fingers are fantastic, crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Pinto beans fried okra, cooked to perfection, everything was huge portions. Different specials everyday. The service was excellent. Very helpful with recommendations and very attentive during our visit. We will definitely return to try the rest of the menu.” -Google Review

The menu was full of delicious sounding options, so we tried most of the appetizers lol. Fried green tomatoes, mushrooms, fried pickles and mozzarella sticks, and pimento cheese balls. They were all amazing. Those pimento cheese balls are outstanding. Light and creamy inside. Everything was wonderful, until I got my pork chops, which were overcooked and hard. They took it back, and made it right though. It was an excellent experience” - Google Review
How to Fish with Lures
The world of artificial lures may seem endless, but the methods for fishing with them are relatively similar. Remember that artificial fishing lures are meant to mimic baitfish, so learning how to use lures properly should allow you to do the same. Consider the fishing techniques below.
JIGGING
Jigging is one of the best fishing methods when introducing lure fishing for beginners
Jigging is one of the most active fishing methods, requiring you to snap or pop the rod tip up quickly to move the lure vertically in the water column. When learning how to jig, you can try either jigging straight up and down as you drift, or casting the lure out and jig it back towards you horizontally while reeling. These jig fishing techniques create the look of an injured baitfish that a game fish would want to bite.
Jig rigs come in all sizes, shapes and colors, allowing one to learn how to jig with or without live fishing bait. Many spoons are designed for jigging — they flutter as they fall enticing a fish. Soft plastic worms are also used for jig fishing as are painted lead-headed hook and feather combo jigs called buck tails. Tip: As you learn how to jig, remember that if you are casting a jig out and retrieving while jigging, you’ll need to reel in slowly to keep the jig near the bottom.
TROLLING
This is one of the more popular fishing methods of fishing with lures while boating.
Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines with lures or baitfish are drawn through the water. Regardless of which of the multitude of trolling lures rigging techniques one uses, the motion of the boat imparts action on the lures, whether they are spoon lures, surface lures, plugs, swimbait or spinnerbait. Trolling with lures is one of the most popular fishing methods for catching big game fish such as tuna and marlin. There are different methods depending upon what type of waters you are fishinng in (freshwater or seawawter) and what type of fish you are wanting to hook. This wil also determine your rig. There is some helpful articles on takemefishing.org or make sure to catch one of the many seminars here at the Alabama Fishing Show!
BOTTOM BOUNCING
Bottom bouncing is a great technique for those learning how to fish with lures in rivers.
Bottom bouncing, a modified form of drift fishing or trolling, is an effective way to attract fish and cause them to strike or start feeding. Learning how to use a bottom bouncer also provides anglers with an excellent method for locating fish if not familiar with the waters.
If you are new to bottom bouncing, you’ll find that buck tail jigs or natural baits are most often used as bottom bouncers, which are dragged along the bottom from a moving boat (drifting or using a trolling motor). You can also use a bottom bouncer from shore. Either way, as you drag, the bait or lure will bounce, raising puffs of sand or mud. It is also helpful to know how to make a bottom bouncer rig to keep your bait in the right position.
DRIFT FISHING
Drift fishing requires some weight to get the bait down, but the motion of the boat moves the bait through the water slowly. You can also drift a bait under a bobber or popping cork.
Knowing how to drift fish allows you to fish over a variety of habitats as your boat drifts with the currents or wind movement. Your drift fishing rig can be setup to enjoy fishing on the bottom or at any selected depth if your drift fishing setup includes a bobber or float. When it comes to selecting drifting bait, natural baits work best, but jigs, lures and artificial flies produce good results, too. Once you learn how to fish with this method, you’ll be able to drift fish on ponds, lakes, rivers and streams any time of the day and year.
STILL FISHING
Stillwater fishing (or still fishing) is a simple, effective fishing method enjoyed by beginners and professionals alike. Learn more about this fishing technique and how you can catch more fish.
Unlike cast and retrieve fishing which requires continuous movement of the line, most new anglers start with stillwater fishing. Stillwater fishing (or still fishing) is a matter of putting your bait in the water and waiting for a fish to find it, making it one of the simplest and most effective fishing methods for beginners. Conversely, stillwater fishing may prove a bit more challenging when fly fishing as casting and retrieving the fly rod tends to disturb the surface. However, there are stillwater fly fishing techniques to help new anglers with the transition, especially when it comes to fly fishing for trout in still water.
