NICK COUSVIS BASS FISHING
Megabass fishing pro, Nick Cousvis started fishing at the age of 13 where he spent many summer days on inland lakes in Southern Ontario. Once he was old enough his competitive nature lured him to tournaments where he became well known for consistent top finishes, many Championship appearances and 1st place finishes across Southern Ontario. His growing passion for Smallmouth bass transitioned his angling skills from inland to the Great lakes and has never looked back. Now with over 15 years of experience on the Big Ponds he spends his time targeting trophy Smallmouths, particularly in the Spring and Fall months where he guides customers to some of the biggest Smallmouth Bass that swim. He’s recorded catches of several fish over 7lbs and 3 over 8 including his biggest 8.37lb from Lake Ontario. His #questforan8lbsmallmouth has now been changed to #questfora9lbsmallmouth. Nick also started a program teaching new anglers how to fish. Anything from trailering and boating skills to reading electronics, tackle setup and how to locate and catch bass.
MATTY WONG BASS FISHING
Matty Wong was born and raised on the island on O’ahu, that’s where his passion for fishing was ignited at a young age of 3. Growing up on both lake and ocean, Matty’s fishing skills and techniques have been sharpened for many years. It was not until he moved to California where his wildest dreams of becoming a professional fisherman would come true. He won the B.A.S.S. Nation National Championship in 2021 on the Ouachita River in Monroe, LA. This qualified him for the Bassmasters Classic and the 2022 Elite pro tour. After only a short couple of years in competitive bass fishing, Matty has rose to the highest level of the sport. He’s gained recognition from fans and peers for being a positive influence on the industry along with an incredible knack for catching fish. Armed with a multitude of knowledge of both fresh and saltwater angling, Matty has excelled with anything from big swimbaits for trophy largemouth to finesse techniques for giant smallmouth. Matty hosts a weekly YouTube show where his infectious personality not only entertains but educates the young and old. Matty is a true ambassador of the sport and carries the spirt of aloha where ever he goes.

TACKLE YOUR BOAT SNACKS
When preparing for an all-day fishing excursion, you must bring the necessary gear and equipment, such as poles, bait, tackle, and lures. But it is also essential to fuel yourself with steady energy and nutrition to keep up with the fish biting at the end of your line!
A hungry angler can quickly become an impatient, cranky, tired, or restless angler. So, stock up on these snacks for your fishing trip, or check with your fishing guide company about what kinds of snacks will be available onboard the boat.
Protein Bars
A little extra protein in your day will help you stay focused and energized on the water in the Gulf of Chiriquí and Hanibal Bank. Bars are easily transportable and easy to eat in the wrapper, even if your hands aren’t the cleanest.
Trail Mix
Always a favorite among hikers, trail mix is a great snack while you’re out catching a variety of fish. You can buy readymade trail mix at a store or make your own homemade version. It’s a satisfying snack that will keep you full and maybe satisfy your sweet tooth, too, with a bit of chocolate and dried fruit in the mix.
Beef Jerky
If you can’t imagine going without meat on a fishing trip, beef jerky is a convenient way to go. There are many kinds of beef jerky to choose from, including options made from 100 percent grassfed livestock with no added hormones.
Mixed Nuts and Seeds
Enjoy some mixed nuts and seeds on your Panama fishing trip for a boost of protein and energy without weighing you down. These snack foods won’t get smashed in your bag and are rich in nutrients like protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants.
Bananas
Although you probably wouldn’t want to bring some kinds of fruit on the boat that could get smashes or leak juice, bananas are a solid option when fishing for yellowfin tuna and other epic
catches. Bananas are great for filling you up and keeping you full for a while. They conveniently come in their own natural packaging and are easy to toss in the top of your gear bag.
Carrots with Peanut Butter
For a balanced snacking experience on the boat, bring some baby carrots for a dose of vitamins and a satisfying crunch. Dip the carrots in peanut butter for an extra protein boost to keep you feeling full until you return to shore.
Sandwiches
For longer fishing trips, make sure you have some sandwiches on the boat for a hearty lunch that goes beyond just casual snacks. You can wrap sandwiches in aluminum foil or put them in a plastic bag until you’re ready to chow down. From peanut butter and jelly to ham and cheese and beyond, the sky’s the limit with how you can personalize your fishing sandwiches for sustained energy on long days.
Make sure to stop by Deep South Foods at the show or visit them online and let them take care of the snacks!
People Are Turning Tackle Boxes Into Portable Charcuterie Boards Called a ‘Snackle Box’
As beloved as they are, charcuterie boards present one problem: they're not the easiest appetizers to transport. Luckily, one Nashville-based mom named Skylar came up with an ingenious solution: the snackle box. In a now-viral TikTok, she shows off a tackle box with each compartment filled to the brim with delicious charcuterie ingredients—cured meats, dried fruits, nuts, cheeses, crackers, pickles, and lots of fresh fruit. The tackle box sections—originally designed with hooks, baits, and lures in mind—also happen to perfectly fit olives and slices of cheese. Skylar and her mom created it for a relative's bachelorette party on the lake, and people's reactions have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. “Einstein. Curie. Turing. Tesla. And then this person. The snackle box. I am shook,” said one man who shared the video on his Twitter.
The concept is very similar to that of a bento box, a Japanese lunch box with sections that allow you to pack foods separately in one container. The tackle box Skylar used is one from Amazon, though really any box with customizable section sizes will do the trick. It’s perfect for a picnic at the beach, the park, or as a unique road trip snack.
Of course, this idea goes beyond the traditional charcuterie ingredients, and can include any snacks your heart desires, from fresh cut fruits and veggies to chocolates and candy—anything you can slice up or fit
in a square.
Turns out, the customizable compartments of a tackle box perfectly fit sliced charcuterie ingredients.
The snackle box is perfect for a fishing trip, a road trip, or a picnic.
You can pack whatever snacks your heart desires, too. Anything bite-sized goes.
YOUR BEST SPRING FISHING IN TENNESSEE
By Vernon SummerlinThere’s never been a better time for spring fishing in Tennessee, so grab your favorite rod and reel and hit the water! Here are the places you won’t want to miss.
MARCH
Largemouths
Percy Priest Lake
Jim Duckworth says casting a 1/2-ounce white Zorro Aggravator spinnerbait with silver blades among the bushes is about the best technique for the upper end of Percy Priest. The water is usually high or flooding the shoreline in March and that’s like a dinner bell to these pre-spawn bass.
He says begin hitting the bushes on the outside of a pocket then cast to every bush until you are at the back of the pocket. Was there a pattern? If bass are hitting on the point bushes and not in the back, then spend your time working the point bushes. It shouldn’t take you long to determine where the bass are holding.
Casting a lizard on a Carolina rig on mid-lake humps and secondary points is another of his recommendations, but don’t ignore flats. Bass are looking for a place to spawn even if they aren’t quite ready.
Alternates:
Crappie anglers in East Tennessee say that Douglas Lake is the place for springtime crappies. The spots to hit range from Swan Bridge to Taylor Bend and Nina Creek. When the lake begins to clear, crappies move into the bushes to spawn.
It’s time to hit the upper section of Ft. Loudoun Lake for smallies. Fish the mouths of Little Turkey, Little River and Sinking Creek by flipping a jig, swimming a spinnerbait and running a lizard along the gravel slopes, riprap and old road beds.
APRIL
Crappie Kentucky Lake
Bob Latendresse showed me a grandest time pulling in crappie from the New Johnsonville area of Kentucky Lake. The best crappie-catching day I’ve ever had was when we anchored along a bank in Birdsong Creek to reel in crappies for more than two hours. I think we had to be catching the same fish two or three times because we
didn’t move from the one spot and caught a crappie with more than 90 percent of our casts. The fish hit small chartreuse jigs with a touch of black.
Bob Latendresse guides on Kentucky Lake for crappie and bass and on the Buffalo River for smallies. He can be reached at (731) 220-0582.
Alternates:
Reelfoot Lake is known for its bluegills. This natural lake is shallow and weedy. The water warms fast and bluegills begin to spawn by mid-month. Crickets and mealworms are never-fail baits.
Crappie in the backwaters of Lake Barkley near Cumberland City are primed for spawning, so dunk some minnows and small jigs in the creeks and among bushes.
MAY
Cherokee Bass
Percy Priest Lake
Hybrids are moving into their summer pattern. Schools cruise the 16-foot depth along the main channel and major creek channels. Gene Austin has found that the rainbow trout colored Fin-S bait on a 3/8-ounce leadhead is the top bait. Hybrids show up in the same places every year — Suggs, Hamilton, Long Hunter, Stewarts, Fall and Spring Creeks and both forks of the Stones River. The lake has been heavily stocked with hybrids in past years and you should hang several reaching 12 pounds.
Alternates:
Smallies near Willow Grove on Dale Hollow Lake are eager to find your minnow free-swimming along the bluffs. A 4-inch shiner on a number two gold hook and light line does all the work.
The Great Smoky Mountain National Park has many trout streams. The indigenous brook trout can be found in the higher elevations but the stocked rainbows and browns are easier to find. Little River and its prongs are the most popular areas for rainbows.

FISHING FOR FUNNY?
Jonny Hawkins is a cartoonist from Sherwood, Michigan, whose work has appeared in nearly a thousand books, newspapers and magazines since 1986. Many of his cartoons tackle general subjects like animals, sports, children and family life, while others are specifically aimed at a readership with a Christian, medical or rural background. Among his regular cartoons are the single panel feature 'Country Chuckles' and the pantomime comic strip 'Hi and Jinx' (1993-2006).
Christian work
Born in 1966, Hawkins graduated from Union City High School in Branch County, Michigan. He then attended William Tyndale College in Farmington Hills, Michigan, where he began his cartooning career around the campus. He sold his first cartoons to the Christian publishing house Scripture Press in 1986. He has continued to produce work for Christian publications ever since. His cartoon series ‘Stained Glass’ ran in church bulletins across the USA in the 1990s, and Hawkins’ religious cartoons
have also appeared in Christianity Today, Today’s Christian Living, Guideposts, Faith Today, The Joyful Noiseletter, Focus on the Family and the Katy Christian Magazine, for which he creates the comic strip ‘Katy and Bend’. In an interview with The Times Herald from Port Huron, Michigan, in 24 January 2006, the cartoonist stated he especially liked to create Christian humor, because it “underscores God’s sense of humor”, as “God created all facets of us, and a huge portion is our sense of humor.”
Magazine work
However Hawkins work has expanded to nearly all thinkable subjects. Many of his 50,000 cartoons were aimed at diverse magazines as Reader’s Digest, Woman’s World, Parade Magazine, USA Today, Forbes, Barron’s, Harvard Business Review, Air and Space and Natural History in the USA, as well as Punch, Prospect, The Oldie and the London Daily Mirror in the UK. His cartoons furthermore appear online on Heart.org, the website of The American
Heart Association, EMPR.com, Medical News Today.com and many others.
Licensed work
His rural-themed single panel cartoon feature about a group of farm animals, ‘Country Chuckles’, appears in dozens of publications including Farmer’s Exchange, Country Folks Magazine, Hometown Gazette and GraiNews. In 1993 he succeeded the late Malcolm Hancock on the masthead comic ‘Hi and Jinx’ through Davy Associates for another 13 years. The two characters, Hi and Jinx, experienced pantomime gags around the letters of the Sunday comics sections in newspapers such as The San Antonio Express-News, Milwaukee Journal and The Salt Lake Tribune. Besides print products, Hawkins’ cartoons have been licensed and sold on CD’s, framed art, T-shirts, hats,
magnets, mugs, bookmarks, greeting cards, napkins and even wine toppers.
Books
He is a frequent contributor to the ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ series of inspirational and motivational self-help books by the media company of the same name from Cos Cob, Connecticut. Through Andrews McMeel Publishing, he makes five topical ‘Cartoon a Day’ boxed calendars every year: ‘Medical Cartoon a Day’ (since 2003), ‘Fishing Cartoon a Day’ (since 2004), ‘Dog Cartoon a Day’, ‘Cat Cartoon a Day’ and ‘Teacher Cartoon a Day’. In cooperation with comedy writer Bob Phillips, he has compiled humor books for Harvest House, such as ‘A Tackle Box of Fishing Funnies’ (2003), ‘A Joke a Day Keeps the Doctor Away’ (2008), ‘The Awesome Book of Dog Humor’ (2009) and ‘Laughter Never Gets Old’ (2015), among other titles. He also provided the cartoons for a doodle book in Rob Elliot’s ‘Laugh-Out-Loud’ series, namely: ‘Laugh-Out-Loud Doodles for Kids’ (Revell Books, 2014)
Collections
Hawkins’ religious-themed cartoons have been collected in books such as ‘Cheap Laughs for Church Publications’ (Baker Pub Group, 1993) ‘Amusing Grace - The Funny Side of Faith’ (Editors of Publications International, 2012), ‘The Awesome Book of Hilarious and Heavenly Cartoons’ (2012) and the activity books ‘Doodle Through the Bible for Kids’ (Harvest House Publishers,
2016) and ‘Doodle Through God’s Creation for Kids’ (2018). An extensive collection compiling work from his 30 year-long career appeared under the title ‘Mirth in the Morning... And All Laughternoon’ (Schiffer Books, 2016).
“It’s my form of worship to God,” Jonny Hawkins said, “to use my creativity to bring joy and lift people’s spirits and hopefully bring a smile to their face.”
Since 1986, more than 45,000 of Hawkins’ cartoons have sold to an array of publications including Chicken Soup for the Soul, Reader’s Digest, Parade Magazine, Catholic Herald, Catholic Digest and St. Louis Review, amongst others.
Through Hawkins’ eyes, he believes his cartoons can lift spirits, engage readers and enhance the space in which it exists. Whether it’s expressing humor with a cartoon of a nun in a clothing material aisle as she picks up the “moral fabric” or the idea of “pray per view” in front of a TV screen instead of pay-perview, Hawkins’ creative expressions, he believes, are a gift given by God to share with others…

Teach your kids to fish in 7 easy steps!
Fishing with kids is a great family outdoors activity. To make the experience fun, safe and pressure free, consider these 7 steps.
1. Scout for Locations:
Fishing means catching fish.Whether you plan to fish from a boat, shore or a dock, scout out locations where fish are plentiful.
The local tackle shop is a great place to get some help. If possible, bring the kids along when you visit the store. Have them observe while you ask for pointers on where to go, productive baits for the area, and information on fishing regulations and fishing licenses.
5. Get a Grip
Teach kids how to grip the handle of the rod keeping it in front of them in a 9 to 11 o’clock position. Explain how the reel handle turns and how to react to a bite.
7. Have Fun
Fishing should be always be fun. Keep this objective in mind and regardless of the number of fish caught, each outing will be a success.
2. Get Ready
Organizing gear in advance minimizes stress. Check as you pack: fishing gear, snacks, drinks, water, sunscreen, bug repellant, rain jackets, hats, first-aid kit, sunglasses.
3. Fish Safe
Safety must come first. Life jackets, while sometimes uncomfortable, are a must for kids around water. Hooks have barbs so should only be handled by adults. If you prefer, barbs can be pinched down. Shakespeares Hide-A-Hook Float is a great device that hides the hook within the bobber for safer casting.
4. Talk Tactics
Boys and girls alike are naturally curious, so explain how a float works and moves when a fish bites. If casting jigs, tug on the line while the child holds the rod to simulate a hit. Demonstrate setting the hook, emphasizing that like any skill, in takes time to learn.
6. Use Artificial Baits
Worm and minnow soft-baits are durable and won’t spoil. Rig baits on a 1/32- to 1/8-ounce jig. Marabou or tinsel crappie jigs also work well. A jig dangled beneath a small float and occasionally twitched is an effective tactic for youngsters. For kids who want to become more engaged, teach them a slow reeling or hopping jig retrieve.

Oil Up!
by DAVID HILGENDORFProtection against rust and corrosion is the primary reason to use marine motor oil in your boat or personal watercraft engine. Despite what most people might naturally assume, motor oils have no natural ability to protect against rust or corrosion. Instead, special rust and corrosion inhibitors must be added to the formulation to provide the required protection. Most oils simply don’t contain the correct additives in the correct concentration.
During engine operation, a layer of oil coats engine parts and the crankcase walls. The lubricant film protects against rust and corrosion as long as it remains in place. However, after you shut down the motor for the day, gravity draws the oil back down into the oil sump, leaving components unprotected.
The longer the engine sits, the more likely rust and corrosion will form. Since cars and trucks are typically driven daily, rust and corrosion largely isn’t a concern. As such, most automotive motor oils don’t contain sufficient rust and corrosion inhibitors for marine engines.
Aluminum parts may not rust, but they can corrode, especially in marine motors constantly exposed to humid air. All cylinders aren’t completely sealed when the engine shuts down, allowing damp air to infiltrate the combustion chamber and cause aluminum pistons to corrode. Corrosion on the piston crown invites conditions that can lead to pre-ignition detonation, a phenomenon where the fuel/air mixture ignites sporadically and potentially causes catastrophic engine failure.
Marine motor oils are specifically formulated with anti-rust and anticorrosion additives to protect your boat’s engine. These additives form a resilient protective layer that clings to engine parts for maximum protection. Make sure you choose a dedicated marine motor oil to prevent rust.
Fuel dilution is another problem many boat owners don’t think about. Fuel leaking into the oil sump is especially problematic in marine engines compared to other engines.
Outboard motors and personal watercraft typically use lake or river water for cooling. When started, the engine draws water into the cooling system and circulates it throughout. Marine engines generally take longer to warm up than engines with a closed cooling system that uses a radiator and coolant.
Adding to the challenge, marine motors are constantly under load, which physically damages the structure of conventional motor oil, reducing the oil’s ability to guard against mechanical wear.
Consider that a typical marine motor propelling a boat at 30 mph operates around 5,000 rpm. Compare that to an automotive engine, which runs about 2,000 rpm at 60 mph. Unlike automotive engines, which shift gears to reduce engine speed and rpm, boat motors only run in forward or reverse, putting more stress on the oil’s ability to both cool and lubricate the engine under load.
That increased stress requires a robust oil formulated to withstand the shearing conditions inside the engine. An improperly formulated oil loses viscosity, becoming thinner under stress and heat, which prevents the oil from forming a durable lubricating film that protects against wear on moving parts. Always choose a dedicated marine motor oil designed for the increased engine stress found in marine environments.
AMSOIL Synthetic Marine Engine Oil is formulated to deliver the extra measure of resistance to rust, corrosion and viscosity loss that marine engines need to operate longer at peak performance under harsh conditions.
