We all want to do good. It’s human nature to want to be able to help another person we see that may need a hand. Every Christmas, you put coins and bills in our red kettles all across our community. It may not seem like much but it means new life – a second chance – for thousands of our neighbors.
The Salvation Army is celebrating the many reasons that motivate you to give. We call them Red Kettle Reasons and they represent all of the different thoughts and experiences that cause you to give so generously each year.
HISTORY OF THE RED KETTLE
NY Red KettleIn 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome — funding the project.
Where the money would come from, he wondered. He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, and praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city’s poorest individuals on Christmas Day. As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England.
He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor.
The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling.” He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas.
Six years later, the kettle idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area. That year, the combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the first mammoth sit-down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years. Today in the U.S., The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods.
Captain McFee’s kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread not only throughout the United States, but all across the world. Kettles are now used in such distant lands as Korea, Japan, Chile and many European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten.
WHERE DO THE PROCEEDS GO?
Where do the proceeds from the Red Kettle
Campaign go? They go to support the local ministries of The Salvation Army that include our Emergency Assistance Program, Men’s and Women’s Transitional Housing Programs, Disaster Relief, the Joy D. Baker Center for women impacted by Domestic Violence and for Homeless Women with Children, and our Rainbow Promises program focused on the needs of the children living at the Joy D. Baker Center.

Every year, around the world, people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25th- Chrismtas. It’s a day, and season, filled with Christmas carols, tree decorating, giftgiving and parties. Our lives, country and world are far from perfect. There are always challenges and struggles we face both personally and collectively. The good news of Christmas is that even when the world or our circumstances change– the message of Christmas is timeless. Because Christmas is about the birth of God’s Son, Jesus. It is about how he came to give us love, hope and joy. That message doesn’t change from year to year. When there is so much bad news and devastation in the world, this is good news worth celebrating!

Home readiness fortheHolidays
The Holiday season is about more than just rushing to stores to stock up on presents. Socializing and hosting friends and family members to catch up on a year’s worth of news also makes this time of year so special. Before friends and family arrive, holiday hosts must take steps to prepare their homes for guests. The following home prep plan can make relatively easy work of tidying up the house and ensuring it is inviting to your guests.
START WITH THE ENTRANCE
Hosting can motivate homeowners to finish certain home improvement projects that enhance the appearance of their homes. Tidy up your home’s entryway to make it more welcoming. Be sure the front door and walkways are well lit. Give your home a welcoming look by pressure washing your driveway and walkways, hire a professional to save yourself time. Remove obstructions and trim back bushes and other plant life. Festive decorations can brighten up the space. Don’t forget a welcome mat to reinforce to guests that they are truly welcome at your home.
QUICK CLEANING
Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thorough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, but it may not be necessary. Go from room to room identifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Or if you can, hire a cleaning service a day or two before your guests arrive for the ultimate clean and fresh appearance. Once they have done a deep clean, it’s easier to maintain. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the counters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. A table runner and a centerpiece of festive flowers can brighten up a space instantly. Fluff cushions on sofas and chairs, give floors a quick vacuuming and wipe down any mirrors or picture frames. Always be sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh, with
8 hushh magazine | www.hushh.club
laundered hand towels at the ready. Children’s bedrooms and other areas of the house may not require such a critical eye. Simply keep doors closed in off-limits rooms.
CREATE A SANCTUARY
Overnight guests should have a designated space they can use as a retreat. If you do not have a guest room, consider having children bunk with one another and designating one of the kids’ rooms for your guests. Fresh linens, an alarm clock, a television and internet access are nice touches. A guest room can also be set up in a den or office with a pull-out sofa bed. Provide access to a nearby bathroom so guests can enjoy some privacy. Hosting children is easier than hosting adults because they won’t require the same level privacy and space. An extra mattress tucked under the bed or trundle bed, in your child’s room can be an impromptu place for kids to retire.
STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES
Purchase extra travel-sized toiletries at the drug store so your guest’ needs are covered in case they forget something. Store them in zip-top bags and let guests know where these items are if they need them. Purchase a set of guest towels, sheets and pillowcases. Keep these in an air-tight storage bag or bin, so when guests arrive, they will have their own set of linens. Launder those linens after use.
STOCK UP ON FOOD
Ask guests which foods and beverages they prefer and try to have some on hand. Use your spare time to prepare some meals ahead of time and freeze them. This way if someone drops by unexpectedly, you can simply defrost a meal and have it ready in no time. Keep a tin of cookies and tea bags ready for those who pop in for a snack and conversation.
With the holiday in full swing, holiday hosts must ready their homes for overnight guest, but with these tips, should help make it a joyful experience for all.
‘Tis the season to leave the cleaning to Merry Maids. We clean your home like it was our own and take the time to understand all your needs. What’s more, we work with your budget and customize an expert cleaning service.

christmas tree Holiday Hacks
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree... why do you never look quite right? When your vision for your tree doesn’t match up with reality, it’s enough to turn anyone into a Grinch. Not this year—with the help of some seriously easy decorating hacks, you’ll be channeling Cindy Lou Who’s holiday vibes by the time the tree is done.
CHRISTMAS TREE BASICS & SETUP
Fluff The Branches For A Fuller Look. When you set up an artificial tree, the branches are usually squished from being stuffed in a box, so take the time to spread each one out and make it as fluffy as possible before attaching the next branch. The key to turning a faux or artificial tree into the perfect Christmas tree is not skipping or rushing through this critical step!
If your tree has sections that are very sparse, you can fill in the gaps with sections of artificial pine garland. Once you get the tree lit and decorated,
you won’t even be able to tell! You could also fill in sparse spots with sprigs of silk poinsettia flowers or other festive holiday sprigs for a pop of color.
CONSIDER YOUR TREE STAND & SKIRT
Depending on the volume of gifts you anticipate Santa will have in his bag when he visits your house this year, you may want to elevate your tree off the ground to allow more room for gifts under the tree. If you have small kids or mischievous pets at home, setting the entire tree on a low table can be an an easy way to prevent it from getting pulled or pushed over.
Another simple option is to set the base of the tree on large cans, such as unopened #10 food cans or gallon paint cans. You can also stack the tree on empty cans if that’s all you have on hand, but filling them with something heavy beforehand will make your setup sturdier and less precarious.
Once you’ve got your tree positioned where you want it and raised to your desired height, hide the base (and anything underneath it) with a nice tree skirt. You don’t even have to buy a traditional skirt — you could use a length of burlap, a linen tablecloth, a festive flannel sheet, or even a chunky knit blanket as a tree skirt to cover the base of your tree.
CARE GUIDELINES FOR LIVE TREES
If you’ll be decorating a live tree or real tree this year, caring for it properly not only keep it looking great, but will help prevent it from becoming a fire hazard. Here are a few tree care guidelines to follow:
• Put the base of the tree in water as soon as you bring it inside.
• Position live trees away from vents, fireplaces, and other sources of heat.
• To determine how much water your tree needs, measure the diameter of the base of the tree, then provide 1 quart of water per inch of its diameter.
10 hushh magazine | www.hushh.club
• Check the water level daily to make sure the base stays submerged.
CHRISTMAS TREE HACKS: LIGHTING YOUR TREE
After you’ve gotten your tree set up, you’re ready for my own least favorite part of the process: adding lights. Here are some tips that can help make it easier to light your tree:
1. Know How Many Lights You’ll Need. When it comes to Christmas tree lighting, the rule of thumb is to plan on using 100 lights per vertical foot of your tree.
2. Light One Section At A Time.
If you have an artificial tree that is assembled in sections, it might be easier to light each section separately, then assemble the sections when you’re done. Decorating a tree is stressful enough with out having to bend and twist around those wide lower branches!
Another way to light your tree is to run your lights vertically, rather than spiraling them
around the tree horizontally. People who prefer this approach say it helps prevent the lights from getting lost among the branches.
3. Use LED Lights.
When shopping for Christmas tree lights, look for LED lights. They emit the same amount of light as traditional incandescent bulbs, yet last longer and are more energy-efficient and fire-resistant.
4. Use White Lights For An Inner Glow.
Multi-colored lights can make your Christmas tree look fun and festive, but it’ll look even better if it also has a steady glow from within! Add a strand or two of warm, white lights around the tree trunk to give it a lovely glow behind those colorful lights.
5. Work From the Top Down.
Pets and toddlers may admire the lower branches of your Christmas tree, but most people’s attention will be drawn to the middle and top. A messy tangle of lights or sparse patches of branches will be especially noticeable near the top of the tree. Start from the top when

stringing lights, and hang your favorite and most attractive ornaments near the top too. Not only will they be eye level for most people, but they’ll be safer from those curious pets and toddlers.
CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING TIPS: HANGING ORNAMENTS
1. Ditch Flimsy Hangers
If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that life’s too short to struggle with flimsy ornament hangers that barely support the weight of ornaments made from anything other than very lightweight plastic. In fact, I’ve started using floral wire instead of those flimsy hooks — it’s much sturdier and blends right in with the tree branches.
2. Hang Larger Ornaments First
Distribute your biggest, heaviest Christmas tree ornaments around the tree first, then use smaller ornaments to cover the spaces in between. You’ll end up with a stunning Christmas tree that doesn’t look lopsided or top heavy.
3. Hang Valuable Ornaments Up High Ornaments that are especially meaningful or valuable should be hung near the top of the tree where they’ll be safely out of reach of children or pets. Also, consider using a length of ribbon or
wire to secure your special ornaments to their branches to prevent them from falling if the tree gets bumped or jostled.
Likewise, consider placing your least favorite ornaments near the bottom of your tree. They’ll give it a nice full look, while the ornaments you really want to see will be front and center.
4. Support Your Tree Topper
Some tree toppers can be pretty heavy, and it’s important to give them a sturdy base to rest on. One easy way to do this is by folding over the top few inches of the tallest point of your tree — I do it every year, and it works like a charm!
12 hushh magazine | www.hushh.club
5. Finish It Off With Fragrance
For those of us who prefer the convenience of an artificial tree, we don’t have to give up that nostalgic, fresh-cut tree scent entirely! Here are a few ways to add the scent of evergreens to your Christmas tree as a secret finishing touch:
• Diffuse white fir or pine essential oil near the tree.
• Sprinkle pine or fir essential oil onto a basket of decorative pine boughs or pine cones.
• Use simmering potpourri to fill your whole house with a festive aroma.
• Make gel air fresheners with your favorite seasonal scents and hide them among the branches.
BONUS:
1.
Wrap Up The Whole Tree
If you have an artificial tree (and a decent amount of free storage space), you can save yourself some serious time and effort by wrapping up the whole thing before storing it away — lights, ornaments, and all! Use something light (like old bed sheets) to wrap the tree to avoid squishing the branches.
2. Snap A Photo
If you love the way your tree looks this year, take a few minutes to snap photos of it on your phone before taking it down. Next year, you’ll be able to recreate that look you loved by referencing those photos, and the process will go much faster with a visual guide to follow.

Cranberry Mulled Wine
This Cranberry Mulled Wine recipe is quick and easy to make, so festive and flavorful, and perfect for holiday entertaining! I’m a huge fan of serving mulled wine for holiday gatherings, since (1) it only requires a few minutes of prep and can serve so many people (2) guests always love being greeted at the door with a steaming mug to warm up their cold fingers (3) mulled wine is guaranteed to make your home smell a-ma-zing, and (4) it’s simply so delicious this time of year! And I have to say, this cranberry mulled wine is my new fave!
It’s made with all of the usual suspects — a bottle of red (or white) wine, a splash of brandy (optional, but highly recommended), citrus slices, plus a few simple warming spices. But for this cranberry version, I’ve also added in a cup of cranberry juice and a knob of fresh ginger, whose flavors pair beautifully with the mulling spices. And instead of sweetening my mulled wine with my usual brown sugar or maple syrup, I’ve taken a tip from a reader and have been using molasses as a sweetener, which is downright delicious. (Although as always, please feel free to use any kind of sweetener that you prefer.) Finally, I’ve been adding fresh cranberries and rosemary as a festive extra garnish this year, which are cute as well as delicious.
CRANBERRY MULLED WINE INGREDIENTS:
• Dry red or white wine: No need to splurge on a pricey bottle — a basic bottle of dry red or white wine will do. (Or if you’re making a big batch, this is a great recipe to break out the boxed wine too!)
• Cranberry juice: I used good-quality pure cranberry juice, which is significantly more tart than some the usual cranberry juice cocktail. That said, though, any type of cranberry juice will work — I would just recommend adding less sweetener if you are not using pure cranberry juice.
• Brandy: Similar to sangria, it’s traditional to spike mulled wine with an extra bit of liqueur, if you’d like. I like a bit of brandy in this recipe, especially to give it an extra kick after adding in the cranberry juice.
• Fresh oranges: One of which we will mull with the wine, plus an extra orange or two to slice as your garnish.
• Mulling spices: I like to use a combination of 8 whole cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise.
• Ginger: I also simmered a 2-inch knob of fresh ginger in the mulled wine for flavor. But if you don’t have fresh ginger on hand, you are welcome to add in a teaspoon of ground ginger instead.
• Sweetener: As I mentioned, I’ve been experimenting with using molasses as a mulled wine sweetener this year, and it is delicious. But sugar (white, brown or coconut), maple syrup, honey, or any other sweetener that you might prefer would also work. Add your desired amount, to taste.
• Garnishes: Completely up to you! I used extra cinnamon sticks, orange slices, fresh cranberries plus little sprigs of rosemary in these cocktails, but go with whatever you have on hand.

HOW TO MAKE MULLED WINE:
To make cranberry mulled wine, simply…
1. Combine ingredients. Add wine, cranberry juice, brandy, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, ginger and 2 tablespoons sweetener to a large saucepan. Stir briefly to combine.
2. Simmer. Cook the mulled wine on mediumhigh heat until it just barely reaches a simmer. (Avoid letting it bubble — you don’t want to boil off the alcohol.) Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
3. Strain and season. Using a fine mesh strainer, remove and discard the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise and ginger. Give the mulled wine a taste, and stir in extra sweetener if needed.
4. Serve. Serve warm in heat-proof mugs, topped with your favorite garnishes.
POSSIBLE VARIATIONS:
Want to customize this cranberry mulled wine a bit? Feel free to…
• Use a different liqueur: Instead of brandy, feel free to add in some Cointreau, bourbon or cognac.
• Use a chai tea bag: In place of the cloves and star anise, feel free to steep 1 or 2 chai tea bags in the mulled wine (preferably caffeine-free, if you are serving this to a group in the evening).
• Use a different kind of juice: In place of cranberry juice, feel free to make this recipe with red grape juice, cherry juice, or even apple juice.
