“What are you thankful for?”
Most of us are asked this question often during this time of year and like you, I start going through the usual check list: Family, friends, good food, a home, a job, etc. What if you didn’t have those things? What if you didn’t have anything? Then what are you thankful for?
That question has been simplified for me this past year. I have always been a person of simple things/little things, but more so this past year than ever before.
It seems there has been a multitude of chaos in the world this past year: with the Middle East conflict accelerating, school shootings across our nation, natural disasters and on and on. It is hard to focus on things to be thankful for. However, for me it is just the opposite.
This past year for me personally has been no less chaotic. (I could give you a “laundry list” but it would be pointless since we all struggle in life.) In the midst of despair I have been thankful. Thankful of a nation that I can write my thoughts and opinions freely. Thankful for men and women that have fought so I have that very freedom. Thankful that there are still those that hold to words and ideas like; valor, honor, duty, and patriotism. Thankful to be able to honor wounded warriors in this publication. Thankful that I am old enough to understand what these things have cost and old enough to not care if I am politically correct. Most of all I am thankful for my Lord who came to give me freedom from sin. Jesus paid the ultimate price, became the most extreme wounded warrior/Lamb.
So even if I have nothing this world can offer, I have One who paid it all so I might have everything that matters. In Everything Give Him Thanks. In the good and in the bad, be thankful.

Hand Crafted Jewelry
First we need to say we are both Southern girls and as any good Southern girl knows…there is no such thing as too much jewelry!!!
Lauran (pictured right) is an artisan and designer from Knoxville, TN. She has been painting, drawing and creating jewelry for many years. Cheri (pictured left) is the manager/designer who searches for the best shows and shops to showcase our pieces. She is originally from Seymour, TN and currently lives in Holly Pond, AL. Our love of unusual jewelry has led us to create The Coral Cross! We mix metals, wear what we want and we want women to know they can too. We search everywhere to find gorgeous and unusual items to use in our jewelry. We frequent antique stores, estate sales and flea markets to find items you wouldn’t expect to be used in jewelry making. We use only the highest quality gemstones in our designs and high grade freshwater and cultured pearls to add that classic timeless aspect to our rustic designs. We also use Swarovski crystals, because what girl doesn’t want to sparkle?!?
Our designs are a little vintage, country, rustic, boho and classic. SO…if any of these describe you, The Coral Cross is what you are looking for!!! See our HUSHH Club Reward on page 34!

If Black Friday, or Thanksgiving night, is something you look forward to every year, join the crowd. Join the long lines, the traffic jams and the inevitable, huge crowds. Although Black Friday can be chaotic, there are a variety of things you can do to simplify your shopping experience.
Design A Game Plan: On a normal day, hopping from store to store with no intentions to buy can be fun. Black Friday is not one of those days. Research the stores that you are interested in and remember you are on a mission. This will prevent you from being bounced back and forth like the ball in a pinball machine.
Stay Safe: Make sure that you are aware of your surroundings while shopping. Thieves anticipate this time of year just like you anticipate shopping. Make sure you put your purchased items in the trunk of your vehicle or cover them up. Also, carry your wallet in your front pocket or inside of your coat. Pickpocketing happens.
Bring Your Own Shopping Bag: Be eco-friendly and avoid the abundance of plastic bags sliding across your trunk by bringing your own reusable shopping bags. Reusable bags are more durable and easier to carry.
Don’t Buy Just To Buy: Every year there is bloodshed over a bin of towels or a cheap off-brand laptop. They are cheap but they aren’t always the best quality. Make sure your purchases are worth your struggle and lack of sleep.
Shop Local and Gift Different: The sale ads drop and the most popular Black Friday participators are plastered all over the front. Sure, the door busters look like a great deal but why not think outside of the box? This year, visit boutiques, bookstores or antique shops you would never think of. They might be having great sales you would otherwise overlook.
Spend Wisely: Black Friday happens once a year but credit card debt can be forever. Set aside an allotted amount of money and don’t overspend.

Why You Should Have Your Tile and Grout Professionally Cleaned with Eco Clean
Tileflooring is a popular choice for entryways, kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms due to its strength, durability and visual appeal. The only downside to tile flooring is the difficultly to keep it clean. Tile grout is a porous material, and whenever you spill or mop your floors, it is absorbing stains and dirt. The result? A dingy looking tile floor with dark-colored grout.
Of course, it is possible to get down on your hands and knees and scrub the grout clean with a toothbrush and chemicals, but that can be a long, tedious, and uncomfortable job. And even after tons of scrubbing, dirt embedded deep within the grout lines will remain, more dirt will accumulate over time, and you’ll be back on your hands and knees after a few months.
You can save time (and your back) by hiring a professional, such as Eco
How are Tile and Grout Cleaned Professionally?
Eco Clean tile and grout cleaning utilizes steam and water pressure to release dirt and grime and suction to remove the dirty water from the surface of the floor. This is the most effective and efficient way to have your tile and grout professionally cleaned. Special attention is given to any stains, the areas around appliances, in corners, and near baseboards. You may also opt to have your grout sealed after it is cleaned to prevent staining and to keep dirt from accumulating in the grout after a professional tile cleaning. Depending on how old and dirty the grout is, however, it may be permanently stained. There is also the option to add a custom color seal to the grout to cover set stains in these instances.
How Long Does A Professional Tile

the size of tile, and number of grout lines. If you opt to have your grout sealed, the process will take longer, typically two to three hours. Sealing your grout will prevent dirt buildup and can reduce the frequency of professional cleanings. If you have your floors sealed, you should avoid using the floor immediately afterwards and do not clean it for at least 24 hours. Avoid using harsh floor cleaners to protect the grout seal.
Is Professional Tile and Grout Cleaning Safe for my Floors?
Before beginning, an Eco Clean technician will test your floors to ensure the safest and most effect cleaning method for your floors. The cleaning process involves the use of hot water and high pressure, which is safe for use on most tiled floors. If you have questions about cleaning the tile and grout in your

Acupuncture is Rx for Stress, Anxiety and the Holiday Blues
By Pacific College of Oriental Medicane
Depression/Anxiety are conditions that involves both the mind and the body and affect how a person feels, thinks, and behaves, and can often make a person feel anxious and apathetic. People who suffer from depression or anxiety can experience muscle pain, headaches, upset digestion, fatigue, and loss of interest, among other symptoms. Anxiety, in particular, can be triggered by stress. With travel, big family reunions or party plans, and gift-buying frenzies, the holidays are a particularly stressful time and many people feel the effects of anxiety or depression in December and January.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) evaluates the entire body system, including physical conditions and emotional symptoms, and treatments are uniquely tailored to each patient with the goal of healing the body and mind, as well as revitalizing the spirit. While this is fundamental in any TCM treatment, this treatment of the mind, body, and spirit together is especially fitting for depression and anxiety. Each traditional Chinese medicine treatment, including acupuncture, is an individual treatment plan devised for the patient’s specific issues and health history. An integral part of acupuncture practice is the total evaluation of a person’s “qi”, pronounced “chi”, the body’s vital life energy, and how to accelerate the circulation of qi and blood through a system of specific channels running throughout the body, called meridians. Each meridian relates to major body organs and functions, as well as emotions.
The emotions associated with loss, repressed expression, and other stressful events will cause the muscular structure surrounding the chest cavity to constrict and tighten near the lungs and heart. The chest constriction restricts the qi flow to the liver and heart, a condition diagnosed in TCM as qi stagnation in the liver. Without release, the tension now contained within the chest cavity will continue to strain the heart, which, left untreated, results in panic attacks, anxiety, and panic syndrome, also described in TCM as a condition called ‘Heat in the Heart’. Because TCM connects the mind, body, and spirit and recognizes this connection, anxiety often leads patients to try acupuncture for the first time, as they realize the important tie between their physical and emotional health.
Acupuncture involves the strategic placement of fine needles on specific points of the body related to meridians. This increases blood circulation and stimulates qi, removing energetic blockages and restoring the flow of vital qi energy throughout the body. Once inserted, the needles remain in body for anywhere between fifteen to thirty minutes, during which time the practitioner may rotate the needles or add a mild electric pulse or vibration to further induce relaxation of the muscles.
Studies show that most Americans report unhealthy levels of stress, and holidays can add to anxiety, stress, and depression—particularly in challenging economic times. As use of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication continues to increase, a natural, safe and cost-effective antidote to stress might be just what the doctor orders.
Hospitals and larger medical practices are increasingly embracing alternative therapies. Studies suggest that acupuncture--which is focused on restoring the body’s “qi”, can indeed reduce symptoms of depression, decrease anxiety, and help relieve stress. Practicing a little selfcare this holiday season need not deplete scarce holiday funds: 70 to 80% of insurers now cover acupuncture; clinics at acupuncture schools offer acupuncture and massage sessions supervised by licensed practitioners at reduced rates; and a variety of locations offer Community Acupuncture at affordable (often sliding scale) rates. Chinese medicine has been used in China for over five thousand years and is a holistic, natural alternative to antidepressants or medications that may have side effects. Acupuncture is a drug-free way to feel deep relaxation and to revitalize the spirit.

Tips to Help You Avoid Overeating During the Holidays
Being fairly new to the bodybuilding world and having competed before, I know that it takes a great deal of dedication and determination to reach certain goals. Being able to plan and stay on track while staying positive is a feat in itself. During the holiday season one of the first things that comes to mind is FOOD, delicious food! With the holiday season around the corner, even bodybuilders like to take a small break from their strict training to enjoy food and time with family and friends. Holiday dishes are made mostly of foods that make you feel like you have packed on the weight because they trigger bloating and water retention. Here are a few tips to help you avoid overeating and feeling bloated.
1. Drink a protein shake prior to dinner or leaving the house for that special Holiday Party, or drink 2 twelve ounce glasses of water before you eat! The protein shake should contain minimal to zero sugars as well as carbohydrates, add fruits and veggies to add extra flavor. It will help fill your stomach so you won’t reach for that extra roll or piece of pie.
2. Avoid or limit carbohydrate intake throughout the day to be able to eat extra carbs at dinner. If eating a holiday lunch, minimize foods such at breads and potatoes at breakfast.
3. When partaking in the Holiday Cheer, also known as cocktails, mixed drinks, etc., make sure to allow time for your body to break down the alcohol before you start eating. Otherwise it acts like a poison and turns all that you eat into fat, and who needs that?! The easiest trick to avoid overeating when drinking is to not eat or make the choice to not drink so you can enjoy dinner.
4. We all occassionally ignore that little voice that tells us that we are full. If that happens, the very last thing to do at the end of the day is to drink a protein shake before bed. This will help keep your metabolism going, breaking down that holiday meal.
5. And at the end of the day, we all need to take time for ourselves and try to limit the holiday stress level. This is all easier said then done but the holidays are a time for thanksgiving, as well as time with friends and family. Be sure to stay away from unrealistic goals or expectations and keep things simple, remembering what keeps holidays meaningful. When stress levels are down, we are less likely to binge or overeat.
6. Keep in mind that everything is in moderation and that the holidays are meant to be cherished, enjoyed and spent with loved ones making memories.

His job was put on hold in February 2004 when Dan deployed to Balad, Iraq, as a squad leader. Later that year, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated beneath his vehicle, resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the amputation of his left leg below the knee. After several years of recurring infections and countless surgeries, Dan chose to surgically remove his right leg as well, making him a bilateral amputee.

Following medical retirement in 2006, Dan relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where he joined the staff of the PGA TOUR.

At the 2008 Courage Awards & Benefit Dinner®, he received the highest award bestowed by Wounded Warrior Project – the George C. Lang Award for Courage. He credits the nonprofit for his successful rehabilitation, positive attitude, and most importantly his passion for helping his fellow warriors in any capacity. In 2009, Dan decided to join the WWP team, serving in several key positions within the organization, but most recently as director of the Warriors Speak® team.

How to Winterize Roses
Roses are so beautiful that it's difficult to begrudge them the extra attention they require over the growing season. As cool fall weather brings on their dormant period, one final job remains for you: preparing them for winter. As a group, hybrid tea roses are the most vulnerable to winter cold and need the most preparation. The complexity of this job depends on how severe the winters typically are in your part of the country.
It’s important to stop fertilizing in late summer in most areas. Make the last feeding of the season two months before you expect the first frost. Also refrain from major pruning, and stop cutting blossoms. This avoids stimulating any more new, tender growth, which will be killed by the first frost anyway. Remove all old mulch from under and around the roses; it might harbor insect eggs or disease spores from infected fallen leaves. Just before the first hard, or killing, frost of the season, spread fresh mulch of wood chips, shredded bark, or chopped leaves around the base of the plant, extending as far out as the branch tips.
Once the ground freezes, it’s time to add more mulch. If you live in an area with relatively mild winters, simply mound the mulch over the plant crown 6 to 12 inches up the canes. This insulates the soil to maintain an even temperature in spite of the normal alternating winter freezes and thaws. This thick mulch is especially important when there is no reliable snow cover to protect plants. If winter temperatures often drop well below zero, build the mount of mulch, then add more material after every freeze to make the mound higher. Eventually the mulch should virtually cover the bush. Sometimes it’s easier to enclose the shrub in a cylinder and fill it with mulch.

Visions of Sugar Plum Cake...
PREPARATION
INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
3/4 cup plus 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
5 large plums (about 1 1/4 pounds), pitted, cut into 1/2-inch wedges
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
YIELD: Makes 6 to 8 servings
Recipe Credit: Susan Haskell
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 9-inch-diameter springform pan. Whisk first 3 ingredients in small bowl to blend. Using electric mixer, beat butter in large bowl until fluffy. Beat in 3/4 cup sugar. Add eggs 1 at a time, then lemon juice and lemon peel, beating until blended after each addition. Beat in flour mixture. Spread batter in prepared pan.
Press plum wedges halfway into batter in concentric circles, spacing slightly apart. Mix remaining 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon in small bowl; sprinkle over plums. Bake until cake is browned on top and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 50 minutes. Cut around cake; release pan sides. Serve cake warm or at room temperature.
