When do you become “Credible”?

When starting Hushh I heard the words “credible” and “established” a lot! I was given certain parameters by political clients of the “when you have six months worth of issues, when you have over a ‘magic number’ of distribution, or when you do in home delivery... when you are Established/Credible!”

But, what makes one credible? It wasn’t enough that I grew up in this market and have been in marketing for 29 years. It wasn’t enough working in the main stream of advertising for 12 years. It wasn’t enough that I am a student of marketing and advertising, knowing the competition and national statistics better than I know myself.

I am humbled and feel blessed at the rate of acheiving the goals we set forth. When writing the business plan for Hushh, I knew the average time to “break even” was six months. Hushh exceeded it in just 3 months. I knew it would possibly take a year to have the growth for over a 1,000 distribution points and in home delivery. It has taken only 9 months. I knew I would have to be completely committed to not stray from the business plan of not becoming another “personal opinionated or political platform agenda publication”, but a way for advertisers to tell their story. I knew ideas would be copied. (Imitation is the best form of flattery) I knew it would be hard, and it is!

This team strives to bring this area a true advertising/marketing outlet without agendas or platform opinions. I am overwhelmed at the level of excellence of the team and product. Just as flowers in the spring struggle to break from the earth to bloom and grow. Hushh will continue to listen, adapt, press against the odds and grow to bring you this best of who we are.

Happy Spring! I couldn’t resist celebrating spring with a pretty spring article! We’ve been thinking spring for a long time at My Kind of Lovely so I couldn’t be more excited that it’s officially here! Not to mention these gorgeous Bradford Pears are in bloom though they won’t last for long so we took full advantage and got out our cute little spring wheels for a photo shoot!

FASHION TIP Usually when spring rolls around I can’t wait to get my hands on all things colorful but this spring I’m also loving some crisp neutrals. Whites, greys and even silvers are totally calling my name this spring and I’m loving it. I’m also quite obsessed with these white distressed denim skinnies from Old Navy. I raved about their high rise denim last season and these white ones are the bomb! I’ve already sent a few girls after a pair because they really are the perfect pair of distressed white skinnies and the high rise make them super flattering for white denim. #newobsession I also can’t stop wearing this new white vest from My Kind of Lovely! It will be perfect all spring and summer with jeans and even over dresses. I love that it’s dressy with a more relaxed shape so it’s still easy to wear. Y ou can never have too many layering pieces this time of year!

BEAUTY SECRET “There is no passion to be found playing small – settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” -Nelson

10 Ways to Cut the Fat

Aswinter comes to an end and spring is beginning we may find ourselves preparing for summer. We all know what the holidays and winter months can do to our weight and physical health. I will be talking about how to cut that unwanted fat safely and effectively to get you back where you want to be, especially with summer right around the corner!

1. Drink more water: Water is a key aspect of transporting burned fat out of the body. It will also prevent water retention and bloating.

2. Limit Carbohydrate intake: Eat only healthy complex carbs, at or before lunch. (Sweet potatoes, Oatmeal, Quinoa)

3. Consume fewer calories than you burn: the only way to burn fat is to burn more calories than you take in.

4. Eat 5-6 small meals a day: this will speed up your metabolism.

5. Less sugar: Your body stores excess sugar consumption as fat.

6. Eat breakfast: Skipping breakfast will make your body store fat and burn muscle for the energy for the day.

7. Increase vegetables/ fiber: Both are packed full of nutrients for your body and will also make sure your digestion is regular.

We engineered these cycle shorts for comfort during long rides. Sweat-wicking fabrics have plenty of stretch to move when you do and an ergonomic chamois helps keep you comfortable in the saddle. Ride on. Lululemon Athletica.

8. Consume more healthy fats: You have to eat fat to lose fat. If your body is getting enough fat consumed then it discards fat storage. (Olive oil, Almond butter, Flaxseed oil)

9. Increase protein intake: Lean protein like chicken and turkey are thermogenic. This means it increases basal metabolic rate and energy expenditure.

10. Interval training: This is the most efficient and effective exercise technique for fat loss. Spike your heart rate then relax and repeat. This allows your body to burn glycogen and then burn fat during recovery. Sprints are perfect for achieving these goals.

Tara Thompson

Country Music Just Got Again ‘country’

Dating advice, song writing, and why she got into country music. We got to go behind the scenes and see why this East Tennessee native self proclaimed ‘Hillbilly’ is country music’s newest star.

Tara Thompson (Courtesy The Valory Music Co.)

Tara Thompson

Country Music Just Got Again ‘country’

an exclusive interview by hushh magazine

IT’LL DEFINITELY PUT A HITCH IN YOUR GIDDYUP!

Rolling Stone named TARA THOMPSON one of their 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know, adding to the petite songstress’ growing list of accolades. The fiery East Tennessee native is featured as one of Spotify’s Spotlight on 2016 Artists, holds a spot on The Huffington Post's Top 20 Artists to Watch in 2016 and was honored as one of CMT’s Next Women in Country. Tara recently released her debut single “Someone To Take Your Place” ahead of her Opry debut April 30. The energetic singer/songwriter delivers a tongue-in-cheek spin on her life experiences through each song she writes. Tara kicked off 2016 as part of the CMT Next Women of Country Tour alongside headliner Jennifer Nettles. She is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on her debut album for The Valory Music Co., an imprint of the Big Machine Label Group.

Even though your ‘overnight sensation’ really took you about ten years to accomplish, what would you say was the driving force that took you from playing in bars to playing in the big leagues?

“The last few months have been life changing for me.” Thompson goes on to say “It has definitely been a life changing experience. Plus I get to live on a bus! I mean how cool is that.”

Those were the humble words, from country music’s newest rising star, that started our conversation. Just six months prior to that, Thompson was used to playing four hour sets in local honky-tonks around Nashville. It wasn’t until she played at Tootsies Orchid Lounge one night where she met her manager, and soon to be pal, Spoon. Who would have thought that night would eventually lead to singing her own songs on her debut album for The Valory Music Co.

We recently had the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with Miss Thompson and hear what it took to get from her home town in the foothills of the Smokies to being one of country music’s newest stars.

Tara, what got you started in music in the first place?

TT: Well, the thing is, and I hate to be cliché and say “I’ve been singin since before I could talk” but, for some reason I really was. You know, obviously I have a cousin [Loretta Lynn] in country music but I never realized how famous she was until I was in third grade when I saw her in my history book and I’m like “why is my cousin in my history book... Oh, because she’s the queen of country music, that’s why.” And being able to grow up and see her always made me think ‘I want to do that.’ I would literally sing everything I could. Everything was a microphone for me as a kid growing up.

Tara went on to say that she doesn’t feel any pressure being related to the Queen of Country. She said that Loretta has only offered her complete support and encouragement.

TT: I think that just sticking with it in general. It’s funny because everyone always says ‘overnight sensation’ but it actually took me ten years to get a record deal. I moved to Nashville when I was 18 and I thought that’s what you were supposed to do - go sing in bars. And I always thought that, even if I don’t get a record deal, this is what I am going to do for the rest of my life.

What inspired your new hit single ‘Someone to Take Your Place’?

TT: That song, it’s really funny because when I wrote that song I wasn’t single, and it’s turned into this song now that I’m completely living, and it’s like every word now is a true story.

I wrote that song with my producer, Alex Kline, and Leslie Satcher which was pretty intimidating to begin with because at the time I didn’t have very much music and Leslie was so accomplished as a songwriter. I had one song that I had recorded that I didn’t write and it was called ‘Boy with a Mobile Home’. It’s this funny song about - well that’s what I get for fallin in love with a boy in a mobile home - and that was typical me, a man that’s always leaving. Leslie asked me to tell her about my music and at the time I didn’t have that much so I told her about that song and she said “well

what about someone to take his place” and I was like oh okay, I like that, and we sort of just spit out this song ‘Someone to Take Your Place’.

How does your hometown [Pigeon Forge] influence your music?

TT: Oh... it’s a huge influence. My songs are all true stories so they’re based on experiences from my life and my family’s. I mean I’m a hillbilly, I’m not just sayin that. When people say “you’re not a hillbilly” I’m like let me just take you back home.

I think we all need to know, what’s the story behind Tara ‘Damn’ Thompson?

TT: That’s really funny you asked that because I’m like “what is the story?” I think it’s because apparently I may have a little attitude [she laughs]. You know, maybe just a little bit. Then one day my manager called me Tara ‘Damn’ Thompson and it just kinda stuck. It’s one of those things that started off as a joke but just stayed with me.

Tell us about your moonlighting career as a dating tip expert?

TT: Well, I started Dating Tip Tuesdays - every Tuesday I put up a dating tip - and my very first post was “Stay single b*****s” [am I allowed to say that she jokes]. That’s my best advice I can give you. You can check out my dating tips every Tuesday I post a new one on

“Watching Tara grow from this whole experience has been so amazing. From the first show we played [on CMT’s Next Women of Country Tour] in January up until now has been so awesome.”
Lindsay Ell

How has it been with Lindsay Ell and touring on the bus? How does it feel to know that you will be playing the Grand Ole Opry on April 30th?

TT: I love the bus. It’s kinda cool because we’ve all become really good friends and I don’t want it to end. It makes me really really sad to think about that. I am so appreciative and thankful for everything that’s happened to me.

Twitter @TaraThompsonTN for #DatingTipTuesday.

Hillbilly Fact:

“we waited in line for four hours to take a picture with Jeff Gordon. If that ain’t hillbilly I don’t know what is.”

TT: Well I will say - I’m not a crierbut I think maybe all my emotions may come out when I step foot on that stage, and I really hope it doesn’t, but I might very well cry. That has always been literally at the top of my list. I always said, all I wanna do is play the Opry and I’m done.

Tara is far from done. In fact, she’s just getting started. Her humble roots and good naturedness show through during our conversation. You can truly tell this “self proclaimed” hillbilly is as country as cornbread. She is living her dream and told us that she hopes she never wakes up. We think it’s safe to say, this country music star’s fairy tale is just beginning.

Jennifer Knapp

Nashville

singer-songwriter Jennifer Knapp left her career in the early 2000s and took a lengthy hiatus from the music business. Knapp sold all her gear and set out to travel, finally settling in Australia for a number of years. Following her return, she has gone on to release two mainstream albums.

Knapp is currently on tour supporting her latest release, Set Me Free, and will stop through Knoxville on Sunday, April 17 for a show at The Open Chord with fellow singer-songwriter Erin McKeown.

$18 ADV / $22 Day of www.openchordmusic.com tickets

Q: Set Me Free is your second mainstream release. Tell us about the elements, subject matter, and themes that come together in this album.

A: The over-arching theme of this project came down to conversations between two people. It seems like at some point in most songs, there’s a dialogue that’s happening between one point of view and another. At times there’s conflict; other times, there’s a spoken hope that the person sitting opposite is willing to connect with the lead character. It was interesting to look back on the completed group of songs, because they all seemed to meet at a crossroads of subtle confrontation in trying to connect with someone across the table.

Q: Is there a particular song on the release that resonates the most with you right now?

A: “What Might Have Been” continues to be a song I get lost in when I’m performing it. It’s been one of those songs that feel more likes it’s been found rather than something I actually wrote.

Q: Have you had to develop or re-adjust your songwriting process and outlets of inspiration any since your career as a Christian artist?

A: Not really, it’s actually been liberating. In Christian music, there’s an obligation to cater to religious themes and the culture, but with a “mainstream” approach, I feel like I don’t have to continually labor to tie everything up into a nice, neat package. I’ve always been attracted to writing about the spiritual side of humanity, the dark side probably more than the shiny side. I like conflict and bittersweet resolutions. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there’s actually more room for empathy when sharing a story without having an ulterior motive for another person’s outcome.

Q: What album is in your car’s CD player right now?

A: People still put CDs in their cars? I’ve gone digital, so it’s the ole iPhone. I just repurchased Mary Chapin Carpenter “Stones In The Road.” Damn, that record is so good. Gretchen Peters’ “Blackbirds” has been happening too.

Q: What does an average day in your life look like when you’re not on tour?

A: Ugh. I’m so boring! These days I try and spend my mornings songwriting and listening. Then in the afternoons I’m doing admin stuff for the ole career. Emailing, dealing with tour routing, scheduling co-writing dates and that sort of thing. Then most nights I’m the chef, so I cook up something yummy and pour myself a couple of fingers of single malt scotch to unwind.
