Beginning Healthy

After meeting Emily in March we knew instantly we wanted to feature her. Her electric personality combined with great humility definitely matched her physical beauty. Her commitment to be healthy rather than a number is greatly encouraging even to someone twice her age. Every woman desires to be “thin”, but many cannot grab on to a healthy mind set.

I began a journey 5 years ago and while I have been on this journey before I didn’t have the mind set I do now. I don’t diet and even avoid using that word in my vocabulary. Instead I change my focus on things that are good for me. Sounds simple right? Well in theory it is simple, but it is choice that I sometimes have to make moment by moment from one hour to the next and at times proves to be very challenging. I have struggled with weight for most of my life. After graduating high school 25+ years ago, I put on well more than my freshman 15lbs. It ended up being more like the freshman 40lbs and continued gaining into my sophomore year. At that point I started “dieting”. While I had great success it always came back and was harder to lose the next time. Then 6 months before my 40th birthday I decided to make a change to not lose weight but to get healthy and not just in my body but my mind. So I began a new focus on good choices.

I began with the choice to not be certain size and struggled everyday to not jump on the scale. I choose to eat the right kinds of food and continue to enjoy life with the things I want. I choose to lift weights to become strong and help my body in the future. I choose not to let my body be a trash can anymore but a temple. Here is one of my favorite quotes.

I will not starve for this, I will work hard for this. I will not compare myself to others, I will work to be the best version of me. I will not be obsessive, I will be committed. I will not work for a size, I will work for strong. I will strive for progress and not perfection. And in my pursuit of progress of my own perfection. We look forward to following Emily’s career and wish her all the best.

Stunning Swimwear:

Swimwear this season is anything but boring. Look for swimwear that has bold colors, an interesting design and features like zippers, strategically placed straps and cut-outs. Whether you desire a sporty one-piece or a sexy bikini, Xen by Rachele swimwear provides a range of stylish looks.

Cute Cover-Ups:

When you’re out of the water, a cover-up comes in handy. Instead of throwing a towel around your waist, there are many stylish cover-up options this summer. Boho-inspired crocheted tops are a great option to throw over a swimsuit and can be sleeveless or long-sleeved. Another trend are billowy printed tops that are suitable for pairing with solid colored swimsuits, or even to pair with a tank top. Denim shorts are also a nice go-to item that complements nearly any swimsuit.

Fun,Functional Accessories:

Sun protection is important and what better way to keep your face sunburn-free than a fashionable hat? This season, wide-brimmed sun hats are “in” and can be found in a variety of colors and styles. In addition to protecting your skin, eyes need to be protected from the sun. A chic pair of sunglasses can offer that nice touch. Vintage inspired sunglasses are on-trend like aviator style, round or a retro horn-rimmed look.

“Get a sun-kissed summer glow with a natural look: Glimmering creamy eye shadow, a golden glow with a little bronzer and pink or peachy lips.

Strappy Sandals:

A summer outfit isn’t complete without the perfect pair of sandals. Style trends this season are wedge heels and straps that tie or crisscross at the ankles. Opt for a black pair and a beige or brown pair to be set for summer.

Waves Aren’t Just For The Beach:

The stylists at Belleza Salon and Spa, located on Kingston Pike in Knoxville, gave our models big, loose wavy hair, an ideal look when heading out for summer activities. Wrap sections of hair around the barrel of the iron to produce curls, then shake out or run your fingers through to separate the hair for a wavy look.

Get That Body

Beach READY!

Summer is here and everyone wants to know how they can get their body beach ready. As I always say we don’t want a quick fix. You want to reach your goals slow and steady so that you can maintain what you’ve worked so hard for. BUT summer is here already!! This means we only have a short time to get our body ready for the beach, pool, or lake. Here are a few tips:

Water. I always stress more water. It’s a myth that drinking water will make you bloated. The opposite is actually true. Having more water in your body means your muscles will be full but your body will actually expel the excess water it is holding, leaving you lean and mean with a flat belly!

Sprint. This is the most effective exercise for fat loss, hands down. Sprinting will help you build lean muscles and burn that fat quickly. All about spiking your heart rate then relaxing and repeat.

More Repetitions. To focus on leaning out while training think more reps! This will keep that heart rate up while toning instead of bulking up your muscles.

De-Stress. We all have stress in our lives. Stress is a silent killer that affects so much of our body. High levels will actually make us hold on to fat for survival. Try to eliminate as much as possible. The rest you must learn to manage in a healthy way- Yoga and meditation can be very useful to block out stress, giving your body the relief it needs.

Diversified Enclosures can make homes safe, secure, and energy efficient.

Quality craftsmanship, fair pricing and security comprise the end-goal of the Pfeffer family who own and operate Diversified Enclosures and Screen in Sevierville. The company which opened in 2000 specializes in screen rooms and sunrooms utilizing their EzeBreeze window system. Many of the amenities they offer include glass sliders, powder coated aluminum handrails and screen doors, motorized screens and awnings and flat roof systems. But, now they’re really excited about offering Crimsafe, a security window system and also Eversafe, a security film by HanitaTek.

Crimsafe was developed in Australia over 20 years ago as a hurricane screen. Its applications have been expanded to include security, fire attenuation, and energy savings. Extensive testing and real world installations have proven Crimsafe to be the most attractive and comprehensive screening system available today.

From insects to acts of God, the Crimsafe Screening System keeps homes safe, secure, and energy efficient. It’s installed with tamperresistant screws exclusive to Crimsafe. The system blocks 30 percent of UV rays, heat transfer, improves the energy rating of glass doors and windows and keeps homes cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Crimsafe stocks a full range of standard colors and can match custom requirements. Faulty materials or workmanship are guaranteed up to 10 years from the date of purchase.

EverSafe Security Films offer protection and peace-of-mind. The totally transparent film holds broken glass together. It’s a flexible multilayer construction with a scratch resistant coating. Paired with Crimsafe customers have the latest security technology for their homes.

Crimsafe Security and Storm Screens are now available in East Tennessee through Diversified Enclosures and Screen. Diversified has over 20 years in the enclosures market and with the addition of Crimsafe, becomes the only company in East Tennessee with the strongest and safest security product on the market. Crimsafe began two decades ago in Australia as a hurricane screen and came to the United States five years ago. Diversified markets Crimsafe as a security and storm screen. Since Crimsafe Security and Storm Screens are designed to prevent up to 200 mph winds and debris from entering through glass windows and doors, imagine what it can do to keep out criminals, animals, and storm damage. From the inside of your home or business, Crimsafe protects children, pets, and adults too!

Mike and Stacy Pfeffer invite you to visit their showroom at 110 Flat Creek Road, Sevierville, Tenn., Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. and arrange a free in-home quote. For more information visit www.sunandscreen.com or call 865-453-6780.

Sweet Tea and Sweeter Dreams

Interview by HUSHH Magazine | Written by Margaret Easterly
Baywatch was by far one of the best experiences of my life. I lived on Tybee Island in Georgia for four months. I made great friendships and met a lot of cool people on the set in the movie industry. I even got to work with the second unit stunt team. Being in the movie has been a learning experience, and I was so honored to wear that lifeguard uniform.”

In the last year, small town girl, Emily Presnell, from Church Hill, Tennessee, has made headways in the modeling industry. Although Presnell’s name only recently gained recognition, she will not be up and coming for long considering her big city dream. Presnell commuted with Gage Models and Talent Agency from Church Hill to Knoxville for almost four years, then she decided to uproot from Church Hill and officially move closer to Gage headquarters in Knoxville. But she is preparing to make even bigger moves,

“I actually enjoy traveling because it gives me a chance to go somewhere outside of Knoxville and being from such a small town, even coming up to Knoxville was a big difference - from living on a mountain to living off the interstate. Driving out to Asheville, Chattanooga, and Nashville and seeing all these communities was new to me. Going to New York is going to be huge!”

This summer, Presnell is traveling to New York City with Gage Models and Talent Agency to meet with top agencies and casting directors. She will venture to the Big City, where she will compete and showcase her skills to the renowned talent agencies, on July 24th.

Fame has struck many at New York conferences, such as Breaking Bad star, Aaron Paul, actresses, Alyson Stone, Katie Holmes, and Jessica Biel, along with the iconic, Ashton Kutcher and Josh Duhamal, just to name a few. Needless to say, Presnell is eagerly counting down the days until her big adventure. Her enthusiasm was absolutely contagious as she explained; “I have been to New York, but never like this!” Presnell is sure to make the list of notorious NYC discoveries in the near future, as she has already taken a foothold in local fashion shows and events.

Presnell has been signed with Gage Models and Talent Agency for four

years; they have provided her with the essential tools and advice to succeed in the industry. Throughout her career, Gage has stood with her and encourages her drive to make it big. As her career did not just appear magically, Presnell had to work hard to book with fashion shows, acting jobs, and glamour and cover model jobs.

Her recent modeling accomplishment included the Color Me Goodwill Fashion Show in Asheville. She explained a bit about what the show entailed, as it was one of her most interesting shows yet, “It was awesome. The designers took garments from Goodwill and transformed them into wearable pieces of art. It was certainly different and not something you see everyday,” she laughed saying, “There was a head piece with parts sticking out and unique art pieces.” For the show, she modeled a dress, which designer, Danielle Chaboudy, fashioned entirely out of curtains.

Presnell is no stranger to the catwalk; however, she has caught a bit of the acting bug as well. She was ecstatic to announce her role in the new Baywatch movie, alongside heartthrob,

21

Zac Efron - his face is surely one reason some people decide to pick up acting. Despite my assumption, Presnell’s acting bug sprouted from something with a bit more depth, she wanted to gain an experience. And she certainly did - she told HUSHH,

“Baywatch was by far one of the best experiences of my life. I lived on Tybee Island in Georgia for four months. I made great friendships and met a lot of cool people on the set in the movie industry. I even got to work with the second unit stunt team. Being in the movie has been a learning experience, and I was so honored to wear that lifeguard uniform.”

Although she radiates excitement now, slow-motion running in a skintight suit is not something Presnell would have been excited about six months ago. Presnell says she has grown tremendously in the last sixth months. She has learned the value of self-love, and she hopes through her career she can inspire women to practice the same value. However, her self-love did not come without obstacles; it took being torn down by a difficult relationship and rejection to build herself into the woman she is today.

One obstacle Presnell faced was her weight. Her body weight fluctuated from “really, really skinny” to a little heavier. She could not beat her slowing metabolism,

“Growing up I was a toothpick, I was just really small and skinny, and my metabolism was fast. I even got made fun of for being so skinny, and then I hit puberty and around sixteen, I filled out. Then, my old eating habits from being skinny still kept up with me, so I gained a bunch of weight.”

Despite her changing body, Presnell said she wanted to model, “I’ve been wanting to model ever since I was a child, and

I’ve been like six-foot tall since I was about ten-years-old. Everywhere I go, I could go into a store, and people would be like, ‘you should be a model, you are so tall.’” Peers encouraged her to break into the industry.

Although she was heavily encouraged to pursue this career, she claims,

“I didn’t think I could make it. I didn’t even believe in myself up until this last year. And then when I went through a horrible relationship, it kind of opened my eyes to force myself to love myself, so when I did I came up here [Knoxville], and I thought, ‘you know what? I can do this.’ This is something I have the capabilities to do.”

Presnell is not just in this for the modeling – she is setting challenges for herself. Gage Models and Talent Agency took her on as talent at seventeen. It was her dream, but she was not mentally prepared for the commitment at seventeen, so she let it go. Years later she says, “I was looking back over some old Facebook pictures and saw my old modeling pictures. And I thought, you

know, what if I did not quit? Could I do it again?” With overwhelming support from friends and family, and Gage Models and Talent Agency, Presnell decided to go for round two. This time, she knew it was time to focus.

Often times people assume “focusing” in the modeling industry means sticking to a strict diet, and hard-core exercising, but Presnell did not make her career about her weight. Instead, she centered it on her health, both mental and physical. Although she developed healthier eating habits and an exercise plan, she says the mental aspect is her biggest battle,

“I know that I’m not the only model out there because even when I get there [New York] I am going to be competing with other people. You’ve got actresses to be on the cover of magazines, you’ve got singers and dancers, who are also competing with models. And while you are competing with everyone around the world, you still have yourself to compete with. You have to tell yourself all the time, ‘you know, I am worth it. I got this far.’ You just have to keep telling yourself that to be

Behind the scenes of the new Baywatch movie (Photo courtesy Gage Models and Talent Agency)

able to accept rejection and overcome criticism and jealousy. And you know what? This is my dream, and I am not going to let others burn me down.”

Presnell recognizes the challenges she faces while living out her dream. It includes a positive mentality, but she has to focus on her exercise and eating habits too. Considering looks and weight play such a large role in modeling, Presnell strives to maintain a positive outlook regardless of any criticism. At times she’s considered walking away saying, “If I have to lose weight and all this stuff, then I am not going to do it.” However, upon her return to the industry a couple years later, she realized something she had not before,

“Designers are not going to make different outfits for someone bigger; they are not going to do something just for me. I am working for the designers; they are not working for me. You have to be dedicated, and you know, you have to be able to fit into the outfits. So, I finally took the weight off, and now I am able to do more things.”

food, drinking more water and less soda, eating more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Although she says, “Every now and then, I do treat myself to a sweet tea, I mean, I am from the south.” Another way she changed her lifestyle was through exercise. According to Presnell, this is a run down of her typical weekly workout, “I workout at least five times a week. I do cardio every day at least for twenty minutes, but while I am working out doing strength training, my heart rate is still going up and losing fat.” Wow, she’s definitely dedicated; five times a week – I am lucky if I can make it once a week.

It seems like a lot, but Presnell is dedicated to her dream. She knows what the industry requires of her, and she is going to make it happen in the healthiest way. Presnell applauded France for issuing a new stance for healthier models,

“If I ever make it as a model, I want to give back to girls, and give them a positive body influence.”

In order to reach her goal of becoming a Victoria Secret Angel, Presnell recognized that she had to change her routine. This did not mean starving herself, or taking other drastic measure. It is the healthy way, or the high way.

Step by step, she began to change her lifestyle by cutting out fast

“Models have to get signed by a doctor and have a physical to see if they are healthy or not to even walk the runway. I think it is awesome that the fashion world is finally changing and accepting healthy because girls do not want to look up to being unhealthy. I don’t want children to look up to someone who is passing out all the time or starving themselves. I want them to look up to someone who is healthy and happy.”

As Presnell continues to break into the industry, this is the type of model she wants to be, healthy and happy.

Her Victoria Secret Angel dream may be her ultimate goal, but she also insists on being a role model to girls and a positive body influence. She

said, “If I ever make it as a model, I want to give back to girls, and give them a positive body influence.” Presnell encourages women to end body shaming and embrace unique and healthy shapes by saying, “You have people out here shaming one another – you are either plus sized or skinny. But you should love yourself, not hurt yourself. Love yourself and eat healthy.” Women are striving everyday to transform their bodies into iconic model forms, but they fail to realize the value of their own shape. Role models like Emily Presnell are on the verge of changing the way women view their bodies – instead of idolizing others bodies, women will respect and love their own.

Tropical Plants

That Thrive In East Tennessee

When growing Tropicals, the key is finding the right species. Some of the more specialized nurseries in town will more than likely be your best source for these plants. And of course there are a plethora of online flower & seed shops that are wonderful sources. So why not bring a bit of the tropics to your garden?

Camellia

Camellias are evergreen shrubs with thick, glossy leaves and lush, showy flowers that range in color from white to pink to red. They thrive well in an acidic soil like the red clay so ubiquitous in the south. They require a lot of water, well-drained soil, and don’t tolerate drought.

• Camellia japonica ‘April Dawn’ (candy striped, double flowers, hardy to zone 6b.)

• Camellia japonica ‘April Kiss’ (small, reddish-pink blooms, hardy to zone 6b.)

The hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti and is used in their national tourism slogan, Haïti: Experience It! The large trumpet shaped flowers have five or more petals. Colors range from white to pink, red, orange, peach, yellow or purple and are used in the garden to attract birds, bees and hummingbirds. The flowers are also used to make tea. Hibiscus

• Hibiscus Plum Crazy (giant, pure white blooms and stunning, blue-green foliage. Hardy to zones 4-10.)

• Hibiscus Blue River II (hybrid with 10" flowers and purplish-green, maple-cut leaves. Hardy to zones 4-10. )

Hardiness Zones, Gardening Zones, Growing Zones and Plant Zones refer to defined geographic regions that can support specific plants, flowers and trees. The zones define a minimum range of temperatures that a plant or tree can survive safely in that zone.

In Knoxville, our zone is 6b-7a.

Palm

Several palm trees will grow, and even flourish in places like Tennessee, North Alabama, and even Kentucky. These cold-hardy palms can withstand temperatures well below freezing, or even lower when mature.

• Windmill Palm (A fast and easy-to-grow palm tree reaching 20' or more in the Southeast. They especially look nice when planted in groups of three or more. Hardy in zones 7a & 7b.)

• Needle Palms (A clumping palm named for the sharp needles that protect the crown, though the needles remain safely away from children or pets, as they are in the center of the plant. Hardy in zone 6b or slightly colder when established. )

Banana Tree

Banana trees will grow very happily in Tennessee. They can grow up to 12' tall in one growing season and will produce green leaves about 6" in length. Hardy banana doesn’t generally produce fruit due to the short growing season in Tennessee. If they do produce fruit, it will be small and inedible.

• Basjoo Banana tree can form a great privacy background and does rather well as a potted plant and can be moved indoors and kept near a window in the winter.

• Banana Sikkimensis sports camouflage markings, and unlike the Basjoo, can be propagated from seed. Both varieties are widely available through specialty nurseries.

Riding the Rush East TN

Kayakers and rafters flock to the Ocoee to take on an authentic Olympic course. But the river has much more to offer, including picnicking, scenic views and, yes, calm water.

Looking for a real rush? The Ocoee River Gorge is one of the premier sport destination rivers in the Southeast, ideal for kayaking and whitewater rafting. Site of the 1996 Olympics whitewater competitions, the Ocoee boasts the mile-long Olympic whitewater course, as well as a four-and-a-half mile rafting area.

Believe it or not, when TVA is using the Ocoee River to create electricity, the river channel is a bed of dry rocks, with just enough water to swim in a few places.

But when TVA diverts water for recreation, it brings two famed stretches of river roaring to life: the one-mile Olympic whitewater course, fed by releases of water from Ocoee Dam No. 3, and a four and half mile rafting area, fed by water from Ocoee Dam No. 2.

Though it feels like a wild ride, the water release is actually carefully controlled—for world-class competition the water can’t vary significantly. But for most of us, it certainly feels like a world-class thrill ride.

The Hostess With The Mostest

Summer is moving in quickly, and it is providing the perfect atmosphere to put your patio to use. Nothing says summer

To pull it off successfully, you’ll need a few essential summer accessories.

In order to be the hostess with the mostest, your patio needs to focus on several aspects including space, lighting, table setting, décor, and most importantly good food. Start by scattering string lights around the patio. This will achieve an enchanting look from day to night. Either string them across the patio, or place them in lanterns as a centerpiece. After that, it is time to set the table. This is not the time to bring out the fine china. For the summer, invest in a durable plastic set that isn’t prone to easy breakage. Another important aspect of successful patio dining is the display and décor. Surely, you have tulips or daisies springing up in your yard by

now – clip a couple and throw them into a mason jar for a quick flower arrangement. Last, but certainly not least, is the food. Serve up something delicious, try something new like a make-your-own sushi night, or opt for the traditional hamburgers and hot dogs with an added topping bar with condiments ranging from ketchup to bleu cheese. By focusing on these basics, you’re patio dining experience is sure to be a hit!

any restaurants offering delightful outdoor dining experiences are scattered about Knoxville. Above are just a few that stand out in our minds. But one area located in the northwest quadrant of Knoxville, at the intersection of Northshore Drive and Pellissippi Parkway has captured our collective attention. Northshore Town Center, anchored by Target and Publix, has a small community feel. Its pedestrian-friendly Town Center surrounds a five-acre lake and features a desirable collection of dining and entertainment-related tenants including Soccer Taco, Casual Pint and Cazzy’s Corner Grill, all of whom have great patios for enjoying a drink and dinner at sunset. And its central location makes it convenient to Knoxvillians and those from Alcoa/Maryville.

Soccer Taco and their neighbor, Casual Pint have announced plans to have live music on their shared patio. So, if you’re looking for something different from the typical West Knox or Downtown dining experience, check Northshore Town Center out. You’ll be glad you did.

Arts in the Airport

For the past eight years, just past the security checkpoint at Mcghee Tyson Airport, some of Knoxville’s finest artists showcase their work. From photographs to pottery and paintings, 40 pieces of art are chosen through a juried search and selected out of more than 350 submissions. Through a partnership with the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority commissions two sixmonth displays in the most visited site in the area.

This year, artists are encouraged to submit work inspired by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Contemporary fine crafts will be displayed in response to the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service.

The Arts in the Airport 15th exhibition is running now from March 31 to September 21, 2016. Each exhibit is a reflection of our region’s heritage, culture and diversity.

Artists are asked to submit artwork for the next competition by July 24, 2016. For more information, visit www.knoxalliance.com/artsin-the-airport/.

Now in its 6th year, the nief-norf Summer Festival (nnSF) is an international gathering of instrumentalists, composers, and scholars dedicated to the performance, creation, and research of contemporary chamber music. Community Television of Knoxville: Summer Animation Workshop

June 6, 2016 — June 10, 2016

Community Television of Knoxville is pleased to announce our 2016 Summer Animation Workshop. This is an intense week of motion picture making! Participants will learn the basics of stop-motion, cut and paste, hand drawn, claymation and other types of animation. They will complete a series of short animations with the opportunity to storyboard and create their own animated vignette!

Participants must come prepared to work. It should be noted that one second of animation is created using twenty four still images. Animation is extremely time consuming and the very nature of this process involves work. If the student views long periods of time cutting, molding, drawing, and other necessary steps as daunting, this may not be a workshop for them. On the other hand, if the student sees the reward in the final product of this type of creation, then this is a perfect workshop for them!

The 5-day workshop will be offered three times this summer. Lunch is included. A $25 Materials Fee must be paid for each participant. Space is limited to 8 students per session.

Iwas embarrassed; I was fangirling in Scruffy City Hall. Everyone sat in the balcony with a dark craft beer, while peering over at Ben Sollee. And there I was, smiling ear to ear with a Miller Lite like I was at a Jonas Brothers’ concert in 2007.

It was good music. The kind that makes you sit at the edge of your seat with a grin. But it was unexpected. Ben Sollee is a classically trained cellist; I’m not knocking cellists, but the cello never peaked my interest before. However, it was certainly something that peaked Sollee’s interest from the beginning. When he was in elementary school, he said the teachers passed out instruments like a petting zoo.

As a third grader, he was entranced by the “crazy noises” of the cello. He was determined to play. His teachers taught him classical music; you know the typeit’s in all the cleaning commercials. Sollee played a bit of that, but claimed this type of music did not have much to do with him as a third grade boy. “But my father was a rocking guitar player, so he taught me something like this,” said the Kentucky native.

grandfather was also a musician, so when Ben’s music was featured on the show Weeds, of course he had to tell his grandfather to tune in. To Ben’s knowledge, his song, “How To See The Sunrise,” was just going to play in the big scene of the episode. Well, the scene was certainly the climax of the episode. Ben described it as, “a violent sex scene that involved a goat and a lion.” All the while, he blushed thinking, “my grandparents are watching this.”

Throughout his introduction, he switched the tune of his cello from classical to rock – classically trained cellist by day and rock star cellist by night. He got us all clapping along, and then joked, “You can go on the beat or off. It’s okay, we’re in Knoxville.” We were definitely off the beat, but it was okay, we were in Knoxville. It was then the cello caught my interest. This was my kind of music, the kind that resonates with the audience.

This is how he intended his music to be heard. He wants people to experience it alongside him and his cello, or bull-fiddle as his grandfather called it. His

The audience belly-laughed; we felt the embarrassment and blushed along with him as he intended.

It was good music. The kind that makes you sit at the edge of your seat with a grin.

Then, I realized I wasn’t singled out anymore –everyone was on the edge of their seat with an ear-to-ear smile. The sixty-year-old man in the next seat over was fangirling alongside me. Sollee did not just play a tune or talk about his life, he was telling us stories. Laughter, joy, and calmness spread through the audience. The connection was thick; you could feel it. In the balcony of Scruffy City Hall in Knoxville, Tennessee, stories were not just being told, but they were being felt.

Local Spotlight an interview OutlawMusicianCountry MATT WOODS

Q: You’ve been doing a lot of touring recently. Tell us a bit about what life on the road is like

A: Life on the road in many ways isn’t much different from any other life. Most days we do the same things as the day before; wake up, shower, and go to work. It’s the work and the company you keep that makes it interesting. First thing is get in the van and drive to the next town. The drives average maybe 4 hours and are followed by load in, sound check, and eventually the show. The show is the best! I look forward to the days we find time to explore a town. There is the added bonus of working with your friends, of course.

Q: What’s one of the weirdest thing you’ve seen while on tour?

A: The “weirdest thing on tour” question comes up a bit, but it is hard to narrow down to one story. I’ve played with sideshows, at rodeos, and at or with nearly every venue or act you can imagine, so my chance of ending up in an interesting situation is good. However, the individual stories are best told over a cocktail after hours.

Q: I’m sure it can’t be fun cooped up in a van so long while traveling. What do you do for fun while touring?

A: When I can find the time I always look for places to play pinball on the road for some personal fun time. I’m also a big fan of taking in a matinée movie if we get into a town early. Sometimes you can find interesting local attractions, though, like driving my car through a Redwood while driving down the west coast. Those days are the best!

Q: If you could play a set with anyone past or present, who would it be?

A: Kris Kristofferson

Q: What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t a musician?

A: If I weren’t playing music, I think I would be working to find ways to support those that are, whether in a studio, booking bands, or promoting shows.

Q: You’re playing quite a few dates with Austin Lucas while touring, and he’ll be joining you on June 30 at The Open Chord. Tell us a little bit about his sound.

A: I am a huge admirer of Austin’s music. The songs are heartfelt and clever. Furthermore, his voice has a way of capturing the attention of every crowd I’ve seen him play. I’m really happy we will be touring together for a while! June 30th should be a blast!

Stone Broke Saints

We caught up with Jenna McClelland and Andrew Brown of Maryville-based AltAmericana band Stone Broke Saints to talk about their new release, the recording process, the band name, and more.

Stone Broke Saints is a relatively new band, but this isn’t your first rodeo; you’ve both been in bands before. Tell us a little about your background and about how SBS was formed

Andrew: SBS was formed out of the idea of doing something real.

Jenna and I met when I saw her band, Mojo:Flow, performing at a local bar (Smoky Mountain Brewery), and I knew immediately that something special was on that stage. At this point in time, Mojo:Flow was already gigging heavily around the Knoxville area, and I truly wanted to be a part of that. Prior to this, I had been a part of a few local bands, including The Deep End Band and Nuthin’ Fancy, and Jenna and her brother, Michael, had taken Mojo:Flow to incredible heights. The minute that Jenna and I began working together professionally, we started pushing each other. We have always shared a passion for music, and we wanted nothing more than to share our passion with the world. This inevitably led to the creation of Stone Broke Saints.

And what about your band name? How did that come about?

Andrew: The band name did not originally come easy. We are heavily influenced by artists such as Judah and the Lion and Ben Rector, mainly due to the amount of positivity that radiates from their sound, their lyrics, and their personalities. Stone Broke Saints is a testament to the fact that we do not need money to be happy and to be who we are. We love sharing our passion, and we do the best we can to make that evident on stage. By doing this, our goal is to encourage those around us to chase their dreams, take risks, love each other, go all in on this life.

Jenna: The name Mojo:Flow was a play on the name Mojo:Saint –my late father Billy Earl McClelland’s last band. So with the name of this band, I still definitely wanted to include a piece of Dad in it as well, which is where the name Stone Broke Saints comes into play.

You’ve been in the studio recently working on a new album. How has the process been so far and when can we expect its release?

Jenna & Andrew: We are extremely excited about the release of our debut EP. It took a great deal of planning, writing, and rewriting to prepare for this record, and we could not have done it without the wonderful people at SoKnox Studios in Knoxville, TN. They made this process easy on us, and we could not be more excited about the finished product. Our first single from the EP, “On My Way”, is set to release June 14th, at which time the next release date will be announced.

Any thoughts on a name for the release?

Jenna & Andrew: Naming this record has been a tough decision, mainly due to the fact that each song has a very special message that we hope to relay. At this time, discussions are still ongoing.

For those that haven’t heard your music yet, sum it up for us in three words.

Jenna & Andrew: Uplifting, encouraging, honest.

You’ve been testing your new tunes out at live shows. Have any stood out as fan favorites so far?

Andrew: The two songs that I believe have already stood out as fan favorites are “Love in Our Bones” and “Soul Train”. They have been received very well, both for the groove that they bring and the message that they relay. “Love in Our Bones” was written to promote the fact that love is all around us, even when it is difficult to see. “Soul Train” is an upbeat tune that was written to encourage listeners to chase their dreams and live their life without regret. We take pride in the message that we are pushing, and these two songs encompass that message completely.
