CHOOSE NATURAL FIBERS TO BEAT THE HEAT
When it comes to fabrics, choose lighter options like cotton, rayon and linen. Breathability is key when the sun comes out to play!
Summer’s
It’s time to take the plunge straight into the deep end of this season’s fashion dos. Whether it’s swapping out your go-to tote for a colorful new bag or rethinking your accessories when the temps soar, here are the 10 fashion rules of summer to swear by.
2
EMBRACE LOOSE, FLOWY STYLES
Try a fashion-forward ruffled top that skims your body. You can even wear it to work topped with a blazer or cute cardi.
4
PICK THE PERFECT PAIR OF SHORTS
It’s shorts season, so pick one pair that fits and flatters you and stick with them. Going for cut-off denim? Try them on to make sure the length and cut is perfect for you.
3
WHITE SNEAKERS FOR THE WIN
Clean white sneaks are happening this summer— and you can pair them with everything from jeans to sundresses to a mini. Cute and comfy!
5
SLIP INTO SUMMER SANDALS
Summer’s the perfect time to find a new pair of sandals. Slide sandals are great for their comfort & ease (just like flip flops!). A bold color adds so much more style to your step and takes any summer outfit to the next level.

Here!
WHITE DENIM IS EVERYTHING
When the temperatures rise, nothing looks cooler or more put together than crisp white denim. Try pairing any white pant or skirt with a top in a conversational print and a pair of bright slides. Instant Summer!
EXPLORE PRINTS & PATTERNS
Summertime is packed with events. Try something new this year and show up to the next bridal shower, brunch or wedding wearing an in-your-face floral print or a splash of geometric pattern. You’ll be the talk of the town!
DABBLE IN A NEW HUE
Pick pieces with a serious punch of color like coral, blue or yellow for a fresh, summer look. Pair your summer brights with neutrals you already know and love.
DRESS UP YOUR DENIM
Distressed denim paired with dressier pieces results in a high-low look that is so fashion. Try your jeans or cutoffs with a flirty top, cute clutch and a pair of bright slides.
DARE TO BARE YOUR SHOULDERS
Dare to bare—but it doesn’t mean you have to show everything! Strappy dresses are a way to stay stylish (and cool) without showing too much skin. Pair with block heel sandals and be ready for anything.

home
Redecorating a room or an entire house can change the entire feel of the space dramatically. Especially when Summer hits and you want to brighten your home and add spalshes of color to boost your mood. Unfortunately an unpredictable economy has made many consumers a little more particular when it comes to spending on home decor. Luckily, Hushh has a few tips for changing elements in a room with a few updated pieces or accessories which can give a room an entirely new look without breaking the bank.
Slipcovers
Slipcovers are no longer the amorphous sacks they once were. Slipcovers now come in all different price points. Spending a little more can mean getting a style that is elasticized or form-fitting, which will conform to the contours of a sofa or love seat. This is a simple way to cover up an outdated style of sofa fabric or a chair that has seen better days. Slipcovers also are a good way to protect new couches from damage when there are children or pets in the home.
To get the right slipcover, measure the piece of furniture you intend to cover. Without the correct fit, even a well-crafted slipcover can look awkward and cheap. Pay attention to the material of the slipcover, so you know it will be durable and thick enough to cover an existing sofa fabric pattern.
Knobs and Pulls
Breathe new life into older furniture by changing the knobs, draw pulls and handles. Many times furniture comes with standard brass knobs that can look dated over time. Using sleeker, more streamlined knobs can make traditional furniture look more modern. Changing pulls from metal to wood can make a room look more earthy or country. Home improvement stores and accessory retailers stock a wide variety of handles and knobs that can transform just about any piece of furniture. And what cannot be found in a store can most likely be purchased online.
14 hushh magazine summer 2020
Refresh, Renew
Paint or Stain
Painting a room's walls a different color can provide immediate results. But furniture also can be painted and stained. Many times older furniture is made from quality wood, not the type of composite or pressboard wood of some less expensive furniture options. That means that finishes can be stripped and replaced with new stains. Turn a dated dresser into something that looks brand new with a new stain color or a coat of paint. Think about painting or staining using foam sponges to reduce the appearance of brush lines.
Accessorize
Swapping out curtains, throw pillows and even wall art can easily and often inexpensively transform the look of a room. Homeowners can purchase accessories with bright colors that add a pop of brightness throughout the room and can provide a pick-me-up for neutral design tones. Older lamps can be given a new look just by replacing lamp shades. There are many affordable options at discount stores and major retailers. Area rugs can also transform a room with little effort. Bring in a new color scheme with a different patterned rug and carry the pattern to stairways with runners.
Bare Minimum
Sometimes less is more, and this can also pertain to home decorating. Revamping a room can be done by subtraction as well as addition. Homeowners can explore the option of taking out a piece of furniture that may be cumbersome and blocking foot traffic. Removing knickknacks from shelves and thinning out the use of collectibles can make a room more airy and inviting. Before money is spent on changing furniture or accessories, people can look into what they can remove from the room to freshen it up.
Giving a room a new look and feel can be done without breaking the bank.

AAngel Blanco might be the hardest working artist in Knoxville. He’s been at it since he was a little kid. Now at age thirty-three his art is taking him in may different directions.
Angel grew up poor on the streets of a small town in Venezuela. That is when he sold his first works of art. He glued sea shells to scraps of wood and sold them to tourists on the local beach.
He got out of that difficult life when he got a contract as a fashion model and moved to Hong Kong. There he discovered he had a talent for painting when a friend talked him into giving it a try. “I fell in love with painting there” he said. Without any lessons he continued to paint and also became interested in fashion design.
His contract in Hong Kong ended so he moved to New York to try modeling there. “It was tough, difficult and I said well I know how to paint so I sold paintings.”
In 2013 he was struggled to make a living in New York so sight unseen, he hopped on a bus and moved to Knoxville to start a new life. Friends gave him a place to stay and a job in a restaurant bussing tables.
He continued to paint and over the past few years his work has been featured in local galleries including the Knoxville Museum of Art and in an International Exhibition in Mexico.
written by jim martin
photos by javon renee photography
Then he had an idea to paint on a dress for an art exhibition and brought in a model to wear it. He says, “People loved it”. That resparked his interest in fashion design. He bought a sewing machine and taught himself to sew by watching Youtube videos. In 2014 he created his first dress collection. He continued to design clothing and was featured in the 2017 Knoxville Fashion Week.
Now he is more focused on his abstract contemporary paintings. Angel says the images are his memories and emotions, “When I use many colors I want to transfer how happy you can be in life. Even if you have a lot or you don’t have anything. I will try to paint you a happy feeling.”
“I have a lot going on”, he says. While holding down a full time job in manufacturing he comes home to his apartment to paint at night. “When I come home from work I spend as much time as I can creating art. My artistic world is a relaxing escape for me so it doesn’t stress me out to create these pieces after work”. That doesn’t mean he’s giving up fashion design. He plans to release one collection per year. “I feel like
can’t live without one of them.” He is also setting up a T-shirt design and printing company that he hopes will become profitable.
All of his hard work and success is not for himself. He sends money and packages to support his family in Venezuela.
He recently became an American citizen. Because of that he can’t get a visa to return because of the political situation at home. Despite that he says he wants to be an inspiration to kids where he grew up. “I came from a small town where sometimes people told me I would not make it, so I feel that I have the heavy but honored responsibility to guide others, to encourage people, to set an example of strength and persistence, showing we should never give up. Even if it feels like the world is falling apart, keep going and create a new world because we can all succeed.”
In his thirty-three years of life he’s accomplished a lot and traveled around the world. He will always consider Venezuela his home but Knoxville is his second home. “I feel so blessed to be in Knoxville” He says the city has the nicest people. He says his English is not good and he’s from another country but that has never been a problem. “Knoxvillians have shown me true love.”
His long term dream is to be a full time artist that will include painting, fashion design and creating costumes for Hollywood movies. He is also a writer working on publishing a book. It doesn’t end there, he wants to try his artistic hand at sculpture. “As for why I do so many different things, I feel it is a waste of talent and passion to choose only one approach to life and expression.”

LIFE’S BETTER ON TOP!
A few months back, I ventured into the world of rooftop tents. Being the adventurous type, I knew a Roof nest rooftop tent would fit my lifestyle and open a world of new exploration. It wasn’t until I used my Roofnest for several months that I realized how much I truly LOVED it. Here’s 5 reasons why a Roof nest is an absolute game changer!
COMFORT
Roofnest tents are extremely comfortable and boast a 3 inch memory foam mattress. Compared to your typical sleeping pad, you will have the best sleep you’ve ever had outdoors. On top of that, these tents allow you to store and use standard pillows, sheets, and comforters. All of this means no more waking up with a stiff back and neck.
CONVENIENCE
Roof nest tents can be set up in less than 60 seconds! After a long day of hiking or road-tripping, you can simply pop the top and experience true comfort in the outdoors. The days of fumbling around with a tent & blowing up sleeping pads are long gone.
VIEWS
I’ve stayed in some pretty amazing Air B&B’s in my life, but none have compared to the views I’ve had in my Roof nest tent. We recently took a trip to Alaska and discovered some amazing places to pop the top! If you know where to look, you can often find free camping all across North America. National Forests are also available for free camping – so pull down a National Forest road and put that wallet away.
ALL SEASON CAMPING
The Roof nest is designed to handle any conditions Mother Nature may throw your way. The tent walls boast a 3,000mm waterproof rating (a standard backpacking tent is 1,000mm), which means a leaky tent is the least of your worries. In addition, the top & bottom shell are insulated to help keep you warm in colder weather. For extreme cold conditions, Roofnest makes Ptarnagin Tent Insullation so you can stay warm and cozy. Throw in a down blanket or zer0 degree bag and you’re all set for skiing and snowshoeing adventures. In the summer, all windows unzip fully to draw a nice draft into the Roofnest and if it’s buggy, all mesh will zip up so you don’t get eaten alive.
SAVE MONEY
A Roof nest is a big investment up front, but in the long run it will pay for itself. The cost of hotels and Air B&B’s will continue to go up over the life of your tent, so this means you’ll be saving money each time you use your nest. You should also invest in a legit cooler and cooking set up so that you can cook instead of eating out. Find out how we set up our Rooftop Tent Kitchen! Nothing beats cooking in the outdoors with an epic view…it’s one of our favorite activities!
A Roof nest rooftop tent has truly changed my life and enhanced the way I adventure. If you’re on the fence about a rooftop set-up, do yourself a favor and make the purchase. The sooner you get one, the longer you’ll have to enjoy it!

secrets to a Lush Lawn
There are one million acres of lawn across the country. Many homeowners aspire to having a lush, green lawn as the showcase of their properties. The front lawn can make a statement and indicate to passersby the property owners’ personalities and design preferences.
Lawn care takes some dedication and hard work, but there are certain ways to cut down on the amount of effort required to maintain a landscape. By employing a few different shortcuts, you can have a healthy, lush lawn without spending all of your free time cutting the grass or pruning the trees.
* Stop weeds at the start. Weeding is one of the most time-consuming parts of maintaining a lawn. Weeds can proliferate throughout the lawn if not addressed in a timely manner. Once weeds take root they can become a nuisance, so it's best to treat weeds before they even have a chance to sprout. Apply a preemergent weed control product as soon as possible in the spring and then reapply it about three months later to ensure weeds are eradicated. That equates to much less tedious lawn maintenance during the season.
* Plant a urine-resistant grass. Having a dog and maintaining a lush lawn has always been a particular conundrum for homeowners. Dog urine is high in nitrogen. While nitrogen, when applied in the correct ratio, can be a lawngrowth stimulant, in the large concentration that occurs in pet urine, it causes the grass to dry up and burn, resulting in bare spots. Replanting with urine-resistant grasses can help cut down on the level of damage to the lawn from your own pet or pets that happen to make potty stops on your property. The grasses most resistant to urine tend to be perennial ryegrasses and fescues.
* Wake up and water. Watering in the early mornings saves time and energy in the long run by fostering a tougher, more drought-resistant lawn. If you water early in the day, less water will be lost to evaporation. Limit watering to a few times per week, and less if you have had adequate rain. Avoid watering at night, which can expose the lawn to bacteria and attract insects.
* Mow when the lawn is dry. It's not adviseable to mow the lawn when it is wet. Slippery conditions can not only make it more dangerous to push a mower, but also slow down the time it can take to tackle the chore. The mower blades can become clogged and coated with wet grass clippings, necessitating stopping and starting the task. Another thing to consider is lawn diseases spread more readily through wet clippings. Stick to mowing when the lawn is completely dry.
* Let clippings fly. Mulching mowers, or those that just distribute clippings on the lawn as you go, can be healthier for the grass. They will serve as fertilizer and redistribute nutrients to the lawn as they breakdown into the soil. According to "The Organic Lawn Care Manual," leaving clippings on the lawn will fulfill about 25 percent of fertilizer requirements. Plus, you save time bagging up clippings.
* Mow less often. Raise the mower's blade so that the grass is longer in between cuttings. The taller grass will shade the soil and block weeds from germinating. It also helps improve soil's moisture retention.
* Don't cut corners. Adjusting a landscape design to have arches and curves can reduce the time it takes to mow and edge a property. Hard corners in a landscape will require more time to keep straight and pristine.
Caring for a lawn can take less time and effort than you think.

The Art of the Smokies
The Great Smoky Mountains are home to some of the most spectacular natural beauty in the world! One of our favorite ways to take in the area’s incredible scenery is on a Smoky Mountain or Gatlinburg motor trail. To help you make the most of your next trip, Hushh Magazine has put together a guide to the top four scenic drives in the Great Smoky Mountains.
1ROARING FORK MOTOR NATURE TRAIL
The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is located just minutes away from downtown Gatlinburg! Running along a gorgeous mountain stream, this 5.5-mile one-way loop road is filled with lovely scenery. Highlights of this Gatlinburg motor trail include historic log cabins, beautiful foliage (especially in the fall), the trailheads for popular hikes, and a wet weather waterfall. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is closed during the winter months.

NEWFOUND GAP ROAD
Breathtaking mountain views from Newfound Gap Road. Newfound Gap Road is another one of the most popular scenic drives in Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains. Stretching from Gatlinburg, TN to Cherokee, NC, this 31.6mile Gatlinburg scenic drive offers superb mountain views. The Gatlinburg scenic drive along Newfound Gap Road has often been compared to a trip from Georgia to Maine in terms of the variety of forest ecosystems you will pass through. Some of the can’t-miss stops along Newfound Gap Road include Campbell Overlook, Clingmans Dome Road, and the Rockefeller Memorial (where FDR dedicated the national park in 1940).
FOOTHILLS PARKWAY WEST
The Foothills Parkway West at sunset.Foothills Parkway West is a 17-mile road between Chilhowee Lake and Walland that offers unparalleled mountain views. The Parkway features several pull-offs and a half-mile paved hike to Look Rock Tower. Recently, the Foothills Parkway has expanded an additional 16 miles to reach Wears Valley, which is just outside of Gatlinburg. The extended Foothills Parkway will provide a one-of-a-kind look at the highest part of the mountains in the eastern United States. This is the perfect Smoky Mountain scenic drive!

PHOTO TIPS:
CADES COVE LOOP ROAD
Cades Cove is the most-visited area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it’s easy to see why! This breathtaking valley is famous for its mountain views, historic homesteads, and excellent wildlife viewing. With its wide open spaces, Cades Cove provides the ideal environment for spotting black bear, wild turkey, whitetailed deer, and other critters. The 11-mile one-way loop road passes by all of the 19th-century cabins and other points of interest in the valley. The Cades Cove Loop is one of the most popular Smoky Mountain scenic drives!
• Foggy days, rainy days and snowy days offer some of the best opportunities to capture the beauty of the Smokies. Pack appropriate clothing, protection for your camera gear and spend the day in the midst of the incredible beauty of the Appalachians!
• Always arrive at your sunrise spot at least 30 minutes before the actual set time for sunrise and stay at least 30 minutes after sunset. The best color and light is often seen just as the light begins to hit the horizon or after the light from the sun setting spreads out to the clouds.
• Don’t forget to experience the moment. Some days, well most days, won’t picture perfect. However, there is beauty and magic to be found in every day when you’re in the Smokies. Take time to truly soak up the experience and you’ll probably even spot a sliver of beauty to photograph.
• Respect other park visitors, wildlife and federal laws in place by the national park. The park requires that all guests stay at least 150 feet away from wildlife.

KOMBUCHA LEMONADE
Do you love kombucha? Us too! We mixed kombucha with lemonade to create a delicious and refreshing kombucha lemonade. No joke, this kombucha lemonade tastes pretty much like an Arnold Palmer.
What the what?
Yes, there are strains of live active cultures floating around in kombucha, but it is SO GOOD FOR YOU.
So this recipe makes so much sense! Fermented Tea + Lemonade…it’s basically a Kombucha Arny Palmer!
WHAT IS KOMBUCHA?
Kombucha is a beverage produced by fermenting tea with a culture of bacteria and yeast. It’s made from sugar, tea, and SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast). The final product is fizzy and slightly sweet.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF KOMBUCHA
Improves Immune Health
Improves Digestive Health
Loaded with Probiotics
Helps Reduce Blood Pressure
Aids in Increasing Metabolism
Those are just a few. I found an amazing article about kombucha that breaks everything down here. It will even teach you how to brew your own kombucha, which I have not explored doing myself just yet :D
One of the main reasons that I drink kombucha is for the probiotic. I’ve met with nutritionists (both RD’s and holistic nutritionists) and they always recommend a probiotic. By drinking one of these a week, there really is no need for the probiotic.

It is on a rare occasion that I go out to eat, even before the quarantine. It is not because I don’t enjoy eating out, it just that I rarely find a place with great food, service and a nice atmosphere all in one location, until now. I had an opportunity to visit a quaint little restaurant situated in Great Smoky Mountains nestled in the woods off Highway 321.
There is much to be said about the moment you enter a dining establishment. It sets the tone for the experience and treatment you are about to receive. I can say that upon walking in to meet my party I was greeted as an old friend as I gave the name of my party to the hostess, Barbie Kyzar. Honestly upon first meeting her I thought she may be one of the management team. She did not point or gesture to where I needed to go but rather escorted me as if I were someone important. I thought to myself we are setting the bar high, but the staff was ready to take it to the next level. The servers were more than hired staff, they were an extension of a host and hostess. Our main server for the evening was Alley whom was knowledgeable of the menu and ingredients for each dish I inquired about. It came as little surprise to find out she was attending school to become a nurse for she had the art of being attentive to your needs before you asked.
At this point I am wondering if the experience can continue on this level for the rest of the experience. Time to order. Of course I must try the filet, after all their about us page says “The Greenbrier Restaurant is an incredible steakhouse...”. I normally never receive the temperature I ask for when it comes to most restaurants, but this was cooked to perfection. (I always like my steaks medium) It was not just cooked well it was one of the most flavorful meals I have ever enjoyed.
The meal started with “skillet bread” A small skillet of fried cornbread with butter that I could have been satisfied if it were the entree. The salad was unlike any “house” salad I’ve ever eaten and I can not tell you what all was in the mix. However the dressing was buttermilk poppyseed which was a first for me and now my new favorite. Then came the main course. My filet with asparagus and herb mashed potatoes. Which I did not leave any to waste.
From the moment I opened the door to the moment I was having to say goodnight the experience was truly a palatable pleasure! I know I will return soon to visit my new friends and have an incredible meal. So if you’re headed to the Smoky Mountains call in your reservation, I think you will not be disappointed. Oh, and you never know who you may run into while you’re there, as I ran into Phil and Kay Williams.

“When you play songs for pocket change, you learn how to turn on a dime.”
Just ask Logan Murrell. She’s been busking since she was 10 years old, playing guitar and singing Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” for crowds at Market Square in Knoxville and later performing in front of popular tourist restaurants in Pigeon Forge – anywhere people were lined up waiting for a table.
“It’s where I fell in love with performing,” she said. “I played for older people who loved classic country, I played for younger kids who loved Taylor Swift, and I played for the crowd in between who loved James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac, and Chicago. I was connecting with a 7-year-old and someone who was 70 – and everyone in between.”
With your audience at arm’s reach it’s do or die on the sidewalk. And Logan learned early how to make fans and fill her guitar case with dollars with undeniable musical skills, razor sharp intuition, and a fearless drive to perform. Even if her mom had to drive her to work.
She was an early prodigy in a family that loved music but didn’t have lofty musical aspirations. But they recognized it in Logan as early as two when she sang “This is the Day the Lord Has Made” solo in church and they encouraged her every step toward an eventual career in Nashville.
She started playing piano by memory when she was four and guitar when she was eight, but the street corner was the gateway for a musical journey that included being mentored by the region’s best bluegrass performers, performing with the Knoxville Symphony, and joining the cast of the popular variety
shows in Pigeon Forge, including the Old Smokey Hoedown and Country Tonight, where she was the “youth talent” dressed in gingham and rhinestone belt buckles, which she still finds charming (she will admit to being a “bit of a dork”).
Pleading for lessons and regularly surpassing the skills of her teachers, Logan Murrell was a quick study. She inherited a crisp, finger-picking Taylor guitar from her bee keeper dad when she played it more proficiently than he could. When he handed it over, he made her promise she would use it to follow her dreams.
Self aware and adept at mining the right moment – Logan found her creative home at Riser House, a full-service label, artist management, and publishing company co-founded by Jennifer Johnson, who saw sparkle and promise when Logan was just 14 and later signed her to a record and publishing deal.
INSTAGRAM
Now a seasoned performer and gifted songwriter at 22, Logan is getting ready to release her first EP and share what she has learned as a wry observer of everyday life.
With a mental inventory of 500 songs, she’s a walking jukebox and there isn’t much she can’t play. And she brings that wealth of musical knowledge to her songwriting. Her foundation was forged in country and bluegrass, but she
Parton and Patsy Cline to Karen Carpenter, Bonnie Raitt, and Stevie Nicks.
Performing more than 300 shows a year teaches you something about yourself and she carries herself with undeniable confidence. She knows who she is as an artist with a firm hold on what she wants to say as a songwriter.
“At an early age I was able to connect with people though music and see the value of music and what it can do,” she said with complete humility. “At every age, you can make an impact with music. I love knowing I can do that.”
That’s not to say it’s been easy – it rarely is for any kid this talented who would rather play for tips than go to football games and sleepovers. But what she gained was a huge audience of fans from around the world who fell in love with the bright, talented little girl with the big guitar and bigger voice.
calls her sound “Southern BlueEyed Soul” due in large part to the influential female singers she emulated growing up from Dolly
Even her nick name is an homage to her musical leanings, LALA. Nothing trite, it is an acronym for (Logan Ashley) Murrell and she has it tattooed on her left arm above her wrist as a reminder of the power of music to move people. Her mission is to influence people to be kind and not be afraid to be their true self – no matter where they start or where that leads.
“Being kind and being real with people is something I am really passionate about with the songs I sing and the message they leave behind.”
THE BEAT GOES ON!
Knoxville is one of America’s most vibrant cities for live music. From classical to bluegrass, country to rock, the city is like a jukebox full of options. PAYTON SMITH
PAYTON SMITH is proof that working hard, taking risks and finding just a little luck really does pay off. When the singer, songwriter and self-taught guitarist landed a slot on one of the smaller stages at CMA Fest in 2018, he decided to play as if he were headlining an arena, tearing through original songs like“92” and “Like I Knew You Would” all while delivering supercharged guitar solos. Scott Borchetta, the head of Big Machine Label Group, happened to be walking by that afternoon and the performance stopped him in his tracks.
A few weeks later, after sharing some demos with Borchetta, Payton answered his phone to learn that the label was offering him a record deal. "I proceeded to pull over and freak out," he says.
Payton had every reason to celebrate: since he first saw Keith Urban perform on the CMA Awards 14 years ago, the Houma, Louisiana, native has dreamt of playing his own brand of Country music, one influenced by 90’s Country and GuitarRock. The 20-year-old is every bit as much a fan of Pearl Jam as he is Clint Black, whose face adorns the vintage T-shirts he's often donning. He loves George Strait, but also John Mayer, and is certain that his peers in the Spotify generation have equally varied musical tastes.
"I would love to bring a new audience to Country music,"Payton says. "I want to bring Rock fans, Pop fans and John Mayer’s fans along. Genre doesn't matter — music is about making a connection. People just want to relate to something and feel something, just like I did when I first saw Keith on TV. "
Payton cites Urban, Eric Church and Luke Combs as his primary Country influences, and respects each for the way they honor the genre’s traditions while moving the music forward. Emulating that notion, Payton co-wrote a collection of songs for his new self-titled EP, out now via Big Machine Records, which highlights his gifts as a vocalist, writer and nimble guitarist —he plays every guitar part on each track– just like his favorite slingers across the musical landscape. His debut single “Like I Knew You Would” is built around one giant hook and currently climbing the charts at Country radio.
The project’s "Can't Go Wrong With That” distills his Country and Rock influences into an infectious three-minute-and-change jam. Written with
Thomas Archer and Jim McCormick, it's an upbeat, guitar-forward song that pokes fun at the things people are happy to argue about: rivers vs. lakes, Ford vs. Chevy, Jim vs. Jack. But as the chorus reminds, there are some issues we all agree on, namely that Willie Nelson on vinyl, Friday-night football and cold beer are all unimpeachable.
"I've always been a fan of songs with a lot of imagery in them and that's what 'Can't Go Wrong With That' does. It's definitely rocking and it's been so fun to play live, "Payton says.
Payton worked with producer James Stroud and bonded with his fellow Louisiana native over their love of diving beats. Stroud is a drummer and Payton attacks his guitar with intensity, favoring rhythm over hypertechnical nuance.
"I got my first guitar when I turned 10. My dad taught me three chords and I learned there were a lot more than that," he says. "So I studied guys like Keith, Brad Paisley, John Mayer and Eddie Vedder."
With such a strong and diverse debut, Payton may want to aim higher than the lake —this is a collection that cries out to be performed for big crowds. Then there’s "92" -a sultry slice of nostalgia for 90’s Country music. The Mayer-esque "What It Meant to Lose You" is an atmospheric heartbreaker that finds the narrator taking the blame for a breakup. And "Like I Knew You Would" is built around one giant hook.
"As a guitar player, I don't always have to rock out and shred. I like coming up with melodic solos that you can sing along to," he says. "'Like I Knew You Would' has one that is very much a sing-a-long. It's like creating another melody inside the song."
That gift for melody, coupled with his sharp but approachable lyricism and fluid guitar playing, sets up Payton to be the newest young voice to change Nashville. As he made clear on that CMA Fest stage not long ago, he's not afraid to push the envelope or look at things from a different perspective.
It's a mindset he's had ever since he picked
up his instrument nearly 10 years ago.
"I took guitar lessons for three months but didn't like them. The instructor said, 'You know, if you play it like this, it'll sound good.' But I had my own way of playing that I taught myself. I said, 'Well, I can play it this way and it sounds good too," Payton recalls with a laugh. "Maybe I was stubborn back then, but at the end of the day, I just have to be who I am."
AND AT JUST 20, PAYTON SMITH KNOWS EXACTLY WHO THAT IS.
Superstars in Nashville are taking note as well with Chris Young tapping Payton to open on his TOWN AIN’T BIG ENOUGH WORLD TOUR 2020. For more information and dates, visit PaytonSmithMusic.com.
East Coast to Old City
If you peep in the windows of the old storefront at 108 East Jackson Avenue in Knoxville’s Old City you might catch a glimpse of Mark Carson English working in his studio. The space is filled with dozens of his images, some finished, some works in progress. “I work on about forty paintings at a time,” he says.
The prolific artist has over seven thousand clients who have purchased his art over the past thirty years, some of them regular collectors.
Mark grew up in Knoxville. He started painting when he was just eight years old. He never had any formal training, “It’s the only thing I was ever really good at.”, according to Mark.
When he was nineteen years old he moved to Nashville, developing a successful business and reputation up and down the East Coast from New York to Miami over the years. His paintings have been displayed in famous gallery showings. Dealers and designers seek out his work.
Mark says he can paint in seven different styles from realism to abstract expressionism. The paintings in his gallery range from pop portraits to landscapes and cityscapes. He never looks at photos but paints from his memories. “My style is all freehand. From my brain, through my eyes to my hand. I feel like the art that I create has meaning and emotion.”
After thirty years as a working artist he has reached a comfortable level of success but for him it’s not about the money. He’s honored to have people buy his work. “For me to have something hanging in

Mark paints nearly every day. “I’m so thankful, I’m so blessed to be doing what I’m doing. I want people to have my work that love it. To me paintings are like pets. You should adopt it. You should love it. You should cherish it.”
Four years ago he closed his Nashville studio and moved back to Knoxville. He has not regretted it. He’s back home with his family. Almost every month he travels to shows, galleries or delivers paintings to collectors. He finds the Knoxville airport to be much more convenient to reach most of his destinations than flying out of Nashville. Mark also enjoys the laid back vibe and much lower studio rental prices in Knoxville. His friend and fellow painter Leigh Burch rents him the Old City studio space for a fraction of what he was paying in Nashville.
Mark calls himself an East Coast artist but he’s happy to be living and working in downtown Knoxville.

Featuring: Candy Stooksbury and her K-9 companions
Candy has aquired over 20 years working and training SAR (Search and Rescue) dogs. Her current K-9 working companions are Barnabas, a 8.5 year old Bloodhound, and Pearl, a 1.5 year old Porceline Hound. Both are trailing and cadaver certified through NNDDA and Archeologiacl Cadaver K-9. In addtion to Candy’s service with SAR she is a full time nurse at Fort Sanders REgional Medical Center for 27 years and a bonded Deputy with Campbell County Sheriff Department.
Her words describes her and her K-9 friends best: “We are just a small part of the Search & Rescue Community in this area. We’ve been members of KPD SAR Team since it started in 2005. Well structured and managed team, that trains extensively every month. KPD CID Investigators do so much work to gain us a search area before even calling us. KCSO Airwatch has always allowed us to do helicopter training and have been aerial support on so many searches. KCSO Major Crimes also conducts so many interviews and gains information to give us a search area. KCSO Man-tracking Team is very skilled and always willing to give us support on searches. KSCO Dive Team is a great group of divers that assist with water cadaver searches.
THP Strike Team One is a highly trained and skilled Search team we were able to work the Gatlinburg fires with. KFD Training Academy allows us to do cadaver training to keep prepared to work fire scenes. KFD also helps with water support whenever we need it.
BCSO Detectives again do so much work and investigation to gain us an area to search.
TBI Investigators are another great group of Investigators we get to work with. BUSAR is a great backcountry Search & Rescue Team we’ve gotten to work with a few times. National Park Service is always very organized and provides amazing support for their searchers. Campbell County Sheriff Department is very supportive with us assisting other agencies. There are so many outstanding agencies we get to work with I’m probably forgetting to mention some. After reading this list of highly trained professionals, you can see why we’re just a small part. Most importantly my Husband has left a lot of movies, dinners and given so much of his time to help us!! If you see any of the folks listed above, please thank them. There’s a lot of hard work and training that goes into Search & Rescue operations. We’re so blessed to be a part of this community so focused on serving and protecting.
