Did you know February is National Library Lover’s Month? And who better to spotlight than the very lady who has helped children across the world find their love for reading and start their very own personal library through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Every month, the nonprofit program mails a free book to more than a million children, from infants to preschoolers. From its modest roots in eastern Tennessee, the Imagination Library has grown to reach children in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.
“I just wanted to do something great for my dad and for my home county and, at the most, maybe a couple of counties over. But then it just took wings of its own, and I guess it was meant to be.” Dolly told NPR.
Parton’s inspiration for the Imagination Library was deeply personal: her father, Robert Lee Parton. Like many people of his generation, he began working at a young age to help support his family.
“My dad didn’t get the chance to go to school. And Daddy couldn’t read and write, and that was kind of crippling to him,” Parton said. “He was such a smart man, though. He just had such good common sense. They call it horse sense in the country.”
Dolly was determined to give the children of Sevier County something her father never had: early access to books. She started the Imagination Library in 1995, and involved her father, too. He was able to see the program take off before he died in 2000.
The program is available in communities where a local partner has teamed up with the Imagination Library. Local partners pay about $25 per child per year, which covers the cost of the book and shipping.
A panel of educators and reading specialists picks books that are developmentally appropriate for each year of a child’s life.
The human brain develops rapidly during the first few years of life. And studies have found that reading out loud to a child not only promotes literacy and a love of reading, but also has lasting cognitive and educational benefits.
“It also helps children build knowledge and expand their horizons”, Dolly Parton said.
“If you can read, even if you can’t afford education, you can go on and learn about anything you want to know. There’s a book on everything,” she said. “So I just think that it’s important for kids to be encouraged to read, to dream and to plan for a better life and better future.”
In 2018 Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library reached 100 million books.
“We’re going for a billion, maybe, in my lifetime,” she said, with a delightful Dolly laugh. “I’m a big dreamer, you know.”

Passion for reading seems to have become lost on current generations compared to those of the past. As most would agree our world has become filled with too many gadgets and “time wasters”. The world we now live in no longer digs for knowledge but rather settles for quick accessibility. Knowledge and those who hold it, have always been viewed as powerful. This is one thing that remains today. Laziness however has taken the place of studying. We want to know things but sacrifice the act of gathering information for the quick fix and not bothering to find out the accuracy of the source. Without the diligence of studying, compiling and gathering information to make our own accurate perspective based on truth, we steal from others and in doing so tend to get the context out of order leading to inaccurate conclusions.
It has been proven the brain/mind is the most powerful part of the body. Health and physicality will fade but the mind, unless struck with disease, has the ability to continue to grow. However, just like the body, it grows according to how you feed it. If it is fed properly it can perpetuate you to new heights and success, but if fed improperly it will become weak.
Reading is, and always has been, the habit of the highly successful. But successful people don’t just read anything. According to Thomas Corley, author of the book Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals, he found that successful people are highly selective about what types of books they read. This is because successful people see books as a gateway to knowledge. As a result, they tend to read books that are going to help them grow their minds and improve their lives. So tell me, what are you reading?

Hug Your Library
Love your Library
Stop hugging that library. No wait, my mistake, I forgot that it’s Library Lovers Month- and it seems to have come at just the right time as many local libraries are struggling during the economic downturn. So why love your local library?
Libraries are a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; they offer security and peace and quiet. They are also a place where you can focus surrounded by likeminded people with the desire to acquire knowledge.
History of Library Lovers’ Month
It’s important to understand that not everything is available on the
internet (yet), libraries can have vast digital stores of information from opinion led snippets and snapshots from online. There may be some crossover of information but in most cases libraries are a much more economically viable solution when looking for information than the internet.
It’s also important to know that libraries offer services that aren’t available on the internet, including free assistance in finding obscure information and borrowing a book that may not be available in the admittedly immense catalogue one can find on the internet. One of the things that people often forget is that being a librarian isn’t like getting a job at the local supermarket. You want to be a Librarian? Be prepared to get a degree in Library Science. Yes, this is a thing that exists, and it’s necessary to become a librarian.
There’s more to a Library than just the books too! There are meetings that gather there that include everything from people of the Society for Creative Anachronism and other local organizations. There’s also magazines and periodicals, microfiche of local newspapers reaching far back into antiquity, and that’s just a start!
Love your library for what it is, a community meeting place or treasure trove of ideas. There is so much to be found there, including new books to read and guidance on research with papers you may have due. The people who frequent the library tend to be intellectuals, so who knows what kind of interesting conversations you could get into?
Why not push against the declining attendance of libraries and go and learn something new that will expand your knowledge of who you are, of where you live or what you do?
Library Lovers' Month is a month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. “This is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries and to work to assure that the Nation's libraries will continue to serve." (quote from LITERARY MAMA website)
How can you support our library and "show the love?"
1. Stop in and mention to one of the staff why you like or love your library! Make their day!
2. Use their services! Check out books, DVDs, CDs, playaways, CD books. Check out audio and e-books on Kindle. Use their computers and free Wi-Fi. Attend programs. Bring in the kids to participate in the various activities in person or online. Take a moment to look at the art or photos on their Wall and any exhibits. Patronize us!
3. Take a look at their website now and then. Use the many resources they have available on their website. "Like" them on Facebook. "Follow" them on Twitter. Share our news on your networks and let your friends know that you love your library.
4. Join the Friends of the Knox County Public Library, maybe even the board! a group of nearly 1,000 citizens who volunteer for various activities including the Annual Used Book Fair, Branch Buddies, Movies on Market Square, Children’s Festival of Reading, and much more.
5. Donate a gift book to the Library in honor or memory of a loved one.
6. Volunteer for an event or help out at a library.
7. Sponsor a child, or several children, to receive books for a year from Imagination Library.
Most of all, come in and get to know them. They want to get to know you, too. You are their friends and neighbors and patrons. You are important to them! LOVE YOUR LIBRARY AND YOUR LIBRARY WILL LOVE YOU!
Do you have old History books, Encyclopedias, or even school books? Donate them! You can arrange a contact-free drop-off by contacting info@hushh.club
drive DID YOU KNOW SUBARU LOVES BOOKS?
The Subaru Loves Learning initiative is Subaru’s commitment to education. Participating local Subaru retailers work alongside AAAS [America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science] to provide schools and libraries serving kindergarten through twelfth grade with high-quality STEM education books and resources. This partnership makes learning accessible to all.
The award program, now in its 16th year, aims to spur the creation of new, high-quality books about science for children of all ages. Awards are given in four categories: children’s science picture book, middle grades science book, young adult science book and hands-on science book. The prizes are presented to the authors, except in the case of the picture book award, which is given to both the author and the illustrator. As part of the Subaru Loves Learning initiative, Subaru and AAAS will donate the winning books to K-12 schools across the country through their local participating Subaru retailers. Last year, Subaru along with 541 retailers, participated and donated over 91,000 books to local schools. Since the program’s inception in 2015, the Subaru Loves Learning initiative has provided over 278,000 books to K-12 schools across the country.
“At Subaru, we believe education is a fundamental right and are dedicated to supporting organizations, like AAAS, to broaden the world of children through the study of science and innovation,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and Chief Executive Officer, Subaru of America Inc.
“Through the Subaru Loves Learning initiative and our partnership with AAAS, Subaru of America and our retailers have been able to provide an enriching and more accessible science education for K-12 schools by helping to recognize and donate books that enlarge the world of science for children. We congratulate this year’s award winners, whose books will inspire the next generation of science leaders.”
Beginning in 2005, the prize looked back on decades of outstanding science books and honored five authors and one illustrator for their significant and lasting contributions to children’s and young adult science literature and illustration. By 2006, the AAAS/Subaru Book Prize began to honor recently published, individual science books.
The prize emphasizes the importance of good science books and encourages children and young adults to turn to science books, not only for information, but for enjoyment too! It is meant to encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for all age groups. AAAS believes that, through good science books, this generation, and the next, will have a better understanding and appreciation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Don’t miss the outcome of 2020’s winners when the judging panel made up of scientists, experts in the field of science literature, librarians, and AAAS staff will assess the entries and announce the winner. Winning authors and illustrators will be honored at the AAAS Annual Meeting which will be held virtually, February 8-11, 2021. Each winner will receive $1,500 and a commemorative plaque.

Scuba Diving with Nitrox
On today’s dive boats, you’d be hard-pressed not to see one or two of the telltale green and yellow tanks that announce the presence of nitrox, or oxygenenriched air, which has been used in recreational diving for decades. Every major training agency has a nitrox training program in one form or another. But is it right for you? As with anything in diving, there are no absolutes when diving nitrox. We’ll explore what nitrox is and what its practical uses are for the everyday diver.
What is it?
Nitrox is a term used for the mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. Recreational scuba divers use a blend of Nitrox that is usually a mixture of 21- 40% oxygen and 60-79% nitrogen. Often the terms “nitrox” and “enriched air” are sometimes used interchangeably, however they are not the same.“Nitrox” refers to any mixture of nitrogen and oxygen, while “enriched air” refers to mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen that contain more than 21% oxygen.
When you dive, the water pressure causes nitrogen from the air you’re breathing to dissolve in your bloodstream. The higher the pressure, the more nitrogen will dissolve. After a certain concentration of nitrogen builds up, you must come back to the surface slowly in order to avoid either mandatory decompression stops or a case of decompression sickness (DCS).
active 24 hushh magazine winter 2021
What Are The Benefits?
Longer Bottom Times
The reduced percentage of nitrogen in recreational Nitrox allows divers to extend their no decompression limits or dive time by reducing the amount of nitrogen absorbed. This means the less nitrogen there is in a diver’s breathing gas, the slower their nitrogen absorption will be at a given depth.
Shorter Surface Intervals
A diver who uses nitrox absorbs less nitrogen for a given depth and dive time than a diver using air. This means that the nitrox diver does not have as much nitrogen to “off-gas” during a surface interval, which can shorten the required surface interval significantly.
Longer Repetitive Dive Times
Nitrox becomes especially useful for divers who complete more than one dive per day and is most commonly used on live-aboard adventures where it is common to do multiple dives per day. A diver using Nitrox will have a longer allowable bottom time on a repetitive dive than a diver using air because the diver using nitrox has absorbed less nitrogen.
Reduced Exhaustion
Many divers claim to feel less tired after a dive on nitrox than after a similar dive on air. By reducing a diver’s nitrogen absorption, nitrox may also reduce a diver’s postdive exhaustion.
Really, this gas is just like everything else in a diver’s bag of gear and knowledge— a tool that can be effective when used properly and dangerous when not. You will need specialized training to use nitrox and Ski/Scuba Center Inc of Knoxville can provide that training for you with their Nitrox course.

Best Weight Loss Books to Read in 2021
These reads offer realistic plans and evidence-based tips to help you make lifestyle changes that stick.
The Pescatarian Cookbook
You don’t have to be pescatarian (a vegetarian who eats fish) to enjoy and reap the benefits of this healthy eating cookbook. Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D.N., C.D.N., author of Read It Before You Eat It, recommends it to her clients because she says most people don’t eat enough fatty fish.
The reason? They don’t know how to buy or cook it. With three weeks of meal plans, including shopping and meal prep tips, “this book will help you discover how delicious fish can be by highlighting this source of protein that provides a powerhouse of nutrients,” says Taub-Dix.
The Bloated Belly Whisperer
This book, written by Tamara Duker Freuman, R.D., C.D.N., will be a game-changer for those struggling to shed pounds to due to bloating, stomach pain, and other uncomfortable digestive issues.
Freuman takes a humorous, science-backed approach to common gut woes and what may be behind them with writing that’s easy to understand. In addition to 50 gutfriendly recipes, fans of the novel rave about the “invaluable” guide to digestive health supplements and GI disorders.
Smart Meal Prep for Beginners
The key to eating healthier and losing weight? Two words: Meal prep. “No matter what dietary change you decide to make, if you don’t plan ahead, it’s unlikely you will be successful in the long run,” says Erin Palinski-Wade, R.D., C.D.E., author of the 2-Day Diabetes Diet.
She recommends this book to her clients since it includes a 6-week plan to make meal prep a habit that sticks. It also includes helpful info for storing and reheating food, as well as grocery shopping lists. “That’s why I love this book. It shows you how you can save time, money, and take the stress out of deciding what to eat every day,” Palinski-Wade says.

The 4:8 Principle: The Secret to a Joy-Filled Life
By: Tommy Newberry
The 4:8 Principle is a book about thinking differently, about thinking in a way that maximizes your potential for joy. Because most people are oblivious to their habitual way of thinking, they experience less joy and a less-abundant life than God intends for them. The 4:8 Principle helps you improve the one thing in life over which you have complete control: your thinking. This profoundly influences every other aspect of your life. All lasting change is preceded by changed thinking. Any other type of change will be only temporary. The place where real change begins is in your thought life, with a revival of your mind.

Cades Cove: a Rich History
Cades Cove is a broad, verdant valley surrounded by mountains and is one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smokies. It offers some of the best opportunities for wildlife viewing in the park. Large numbers of white-tailed deer are frequently seen, and sightings of black bear, coyote, ground hog, turkey, raccoon, skunk, and other animals are also possible.
History
The valley has a rich history. For hundreds of years Cherokee Indians hunted in Cades Cove but archaeologists have found no evidence of major settlements. The first Europeans settled in the cove sometime between 1818 and 1821. By 1830 the population of the area had already swelled to 271. Cades Cove offers the widest variety of historic buildings of any area in the national park.
Scattered along the loop road are three churches, a working grist mill, barns, log houses, and many other faithfully restored eighteenth and nineteenth century structures. Pick up the self-guiding tour booklet available at the entrance to the loop road for information about the buildings you’ll see in the cove and the people who lived here.
CADES COVE STORY

CADES COVE: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN COMMUNITY 18181937
In moving detail this book brings to life an isolated mountain community, its struggle to survive, and the tragedy of its demise.
A CADES COVE CHILDHOOD
One of the last residents of the Smoky Mountain town frozen in time, J.C. McCaulley, tells of life in a community that few have seen.
An 11-mile, one-way loop road circles the cove, offering motorists the opportunity to sightsee at a leisurely pace. Allow at least two to four hours to tour Cades Cove, longer if you walk some of the area’s trails. Traffic is heavy during the tourist season in summer and fall and on weekends year-round. While driving the loop road, please be courteous to other visitors and use pullouts when stopping to enjoy the scenery or view wildlife. An inexpensive self-guiding tour booklet available at the entrance to the road provides a map and information about the cove.

GOOD GOLLY IT’S MS DOLLY’S FAMOUS BANANA PUDDING!
Banana pudding is a Southern staple and Dolly calls this dessert one of her favorite foods. Her personal recipe is even used in her theme park, Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, which has won best amusement park food four times in the last seven years by Amusement Today. The country queen shared her mama’s famous recipe for banana pudding in her 2006 cookbook, Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s. Unfortunately, it’s no longer for sale, but Parton was kind enough to explain how to make the dish while chatting with the Hallmark Channel at Dollywood back in 2016.
INGREDIENTS
• 3 eggs, separated
• 1 cup sugar
• 1⁄2 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 cups milk
• Dash of salt
• 4 tablespoons (1⁄2 stick) butter
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 (12-ounce) box vanilla wafers
•5-6 bananas, sliced
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 °F.
Lightly beat the egg yolks. Combine 3⁄4 cup of the sugar and the flour in a medium pot. Gradually stir in the milk, followed by the egg yolks and salt. Cook over medium heat 15 to 20 minutes, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove the pot from the heat and add the butter and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla. Set aside to cool slightly. Arrange half of the wafers on the bottom of a 2-quart baking dish. Top with half of the banana slices. Spoon half of the pudding mixture over the bananas. Repeat with remaining wafers, bananas, and pudding.
In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites with the remaining 1⁄4 cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla until they form stiff peaks. Spread with a rubber spatula over the pudding, sealing the edges. Bake until the topping is light golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Serve cooled.

Dolly with her parents Avie Lee & Robert “Lee” Parton
Dolly explained the concept for the cookbook;
“I still like to try new foods as often as I can. But when it comes to cooking for myself and my husband Carl and my great big extended family, which numbers into the multiple hundreds these days, what we really want to eat is what comforts us most: good, hearty food rooted in Mama’s cooking and those country gatherings of my childhood. It’s the food from those Mom and Pop joints that welcome you in as if you’re family. We really just want food that is lovingly made and joyfully served up. Around here, that’s what we call Dixie Fixin’s.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Even though Banana Pudding is a “Southern Staple”, the first actual banana pudding recipe appeared in 1888, in the Massachusetts-based Good Housekeeping. It's quite similar to a traditional English trifle, with bananas incorporated as the fruit.
