All children can benefit from the exercise, energy release, and pure enjoyment of playing sports or outdoor activities. This includes children with special needs.
About 9 in 50 children in the U.S. have a disability or chronic health problem.
Ainsley’s Angels Rollin’ on Rocky Top 5k is open to all people no matter their ability, all coming together to support healthy living in every person.
It all began in 2008 when Ainsley went for her first jog during a local road race. She gave a radiant wind-induced smile that anyone would envy. In an instant, running provided the family with a therapeutic means to fight the devastation associated with learning and trying to live with sweet Ainsley’s terminal illness, which would eventually take her to heaven in February of 2016.
Her smile on the race course, the positive energy surrounding the start line, the other Angel Athlete riders and Angel runners smiling from ear to ear, the togetherness of every member preparing to ‘roll with the wind’, the fearlessness of the athletes, the normalcy of the family, and the love everyone shares is a therapy like no other! This experience is now known as the first of 100 road races Ainsley has completed, to include nearly 20 half-marathons, as well as the 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 Marine Corps Marathons in Washington D.C. Ainsley’s, now, 15 year old sister, Briley, joined her for 30 of these races and the family has discovered first-hand the therapeutic effects of these races…again, not only for Ainsley, but for her entire family and now for the entire Ainsley’s Angels of America FAMILY!
Ainsley’s Angels of America is excited to announce the Rollin’ on Rocky Top 5k is returning in 2021! They will be starting and finishing at the UT Gardens Sunday, September 26, 2021 at 4PM – 7PM.
Ainsley’s Angels in East Tennessee’s highspirited, inclusion-inspired race raises vital dollars to support athlete riders and the Ainsley’s Angel’s mission in East Tennessee. The 5k race includes a friendly course for runners, walkers and athletes of all abilities, with rider athletes being the primary focus-getting them off sidelines and over finish lines. The race includes live music, giveaways, medals and t-shirts for all competitors and much more! This event is meant to allow angel runners, athlete riders and the entire community to come together and celebrate inclusion. This is a family-friendly event-runners and walkers are welcome!
Can’t join on race day? That’s OK! You can walk, jog, or roll from anywhere, at any time. Just choose the “Virtual” option. Participating virtually means that you run your distance (honor system) in your own location, whenever you choose and you still get the bling!*
*Virtual participants are not eligible for race day awards.
BORN AN ANGEL Ainsley inspired the creation of Ainsley's Angels of America, the writing of a children’s book by her sister Briley Rossiter, the Ainsley's Angels Race Series, and thousands across the Nation. Available in Braille as well. www.ainsleysangels.org
Pandemics come and go.
With each passing generation, we think something new and unseen is upon us. That no one else in history has seen the times we are living in now. When in reality, that is not true. Oh viruses take on new names, and we try to act more educated than those that have come before us, but it just isn’t the truth. Life is hard, and at times it seems almost to difficult to bare. However, when you take a close look at history, you will see each generation has their hardship. So, what makes things appear different? Simple, the way we perceive the hardships we face. If all you tell yourself is gloom and doom then that is precisely what you will experience.
When I stop and reflect on my parents lives, I can say theirs truly was the “greatest” generation. My Dad was born in 1928 and my Mom in 1934. They were children during the depression and faced numerous wars. They saw crisis after crisis and plagues that seemed to have no end. AND they survived! They instilled in us to respect others, even if we don’t agree with them. To love our country, fight for it and the freedoms others died for, to ensure we still have them. We were made to listen to instruction and study to find the truth, instead of taking someones else’s word. We were taught to think first and learn from others’ mistakes.
Mom is now 87 and Dad passed in 2014. They taught my siblings and I we would have to endure bad days and times, along with the good. It was a mind set and something I believe is lacking today. Instead we want to blame everyone around us for things that happen when in reality no one is to blame, it’s just life.

Melissa Rogers, owner of mRm Creations, has been an artist most of her life. At the age of 19, she found herself drawn to the vivid, bright colors she saw around her in art museums. As she formed relationships and studied jewelry, she developed a very different style from other artists and peers around her. She began dedicating her craft to being more innovative with glass work and continually evolving with the changing styles and fads of fashion, while incorporating fun, vivid colors.
When making a piece of jewelry, Rogers tries to make a timeless piece for any occasion-from casual to dress, golf wear to everyday outfits. She believes she makes jewelry everyone can enjoy. When asked, she even creates custom pieces to express who someone is or what they’ve been through.
Although she began her career in East Tennessee, she has lived all around the country, selling her jewelry in boutiques along the way. Recently, she and her husband have moved back to East Tennessee. As she finally settles back into her roots, Melissa is thrilled and thankful to have a shop in Painted Tree Boutiques, which opened August 6th off Kingston Pike in Knoxville.
Rogers said,”I’ve sold all over the U.S., and I am happy to now sell in one little space.”
Her booth is F18 which is located right in the middle of the store. She strives to keep her jewelry affordable while looking good and wearing well.

Why people are turning to semi & permanent makeup for natural look
For most people, the idea of facial enhancements like permanent makeup on your face or Botox immediately conjures images of ‘90s and early ‘00s celebrity permanent and semi-permanent makeup or Botox gone bad. But what these types of procedure were 20, and even just 10, years ago is not what it is today. They have majorly improved, so make no mistake — this type of enhancement is back, and it isn’t going away any time soon. Here is the break down some of the most popular options out there.
Microblading
Microblading is a form of permanent makeup, performed by adding pigment into the skin. Specifically, the pigment replicates tiny hair strokes for a fuller looking brow. Microblading provides an option of eyebrow shapes, from following the natural shape of your eyebrow to adding more volume or touching up the arch. Microblading is available for blonde and brown eyebrows. Microblading is recommended for a more natural brow look. Microblading is not suitable for clients with oily skin.
Powder Brows
Powder brows is a cosmetic semi permanent makeup technique designed to create eyebrows with soft powder effect, very similar to powder makeup. Powder effect is done with a shading technique using a permanent makeup device, which is similar to a tattoo gun. Powder brows are recommended for a more filled in soft makeup brow look, as well as for someone with all skin types. Microblading and powder brows can be applied to both men and women. Powder brows are recommended for people living with alopecia, trichotillomania, or any other condition that causes hair loss.
Lash Line Enhancement / Permanent Eyeliner
This treatment involves tattooing a light black line of pigment throughout the lash line, think of it as a light permanent eyeliner but with a natural finish. Lash Enhancement work is super soft and natural looking, leaving a beautifully deepened lash-line without any commitment.
Lip Blush Tattoo
Lip Blush is a permanent makeup procedure that enhances the symmetry, shape, and color of natural lips. Lip Blush can give your lips more volume as it can stimulate natural collagen production which can create more visible fullness. It can last up to 2-5 years.

Lash Extension
Lip Fillers
Fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, work to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of volume in the face. Both Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, which is a naturally occurring molecule found in our bodies. HA helps to restore moisture and volume to the skin. When filler is injected directly to the lips and Vermillion border, it creates volume and brings back definition, leading to a fuller, poutier lip while still producing a soft, natural appearance.
Lip Flip
Alternatively, a new popular cosmetic treatment for the lips is the Lip Flip. The Lip Flip uses Botox or Dysport – which are neuromodulators (yes – the same Botox you get in your forehead!), to relax the orbicularis muscle in the top lip. By injecting Botox or Dysport in this muscle, the top lip is encouraged to relax and ‘flip’ outwards to give the illusion of a subtle, fuller lip. It is a popular choice for those wanting to correct a gummy smile or for someone who doesn’t want to add volume.
Let’s face it, who doesn’t want eyelashes that are a bit thicker, more fluttery and luscious? Lash Extensions are designed to lift and enhance the shape of your eye—think of it as contouring but for your peepers. As a bonus, once you have them applied, you really don’t need to worry about slapping on eyeliner or eye makeup, as the work of getting a dramatic lash line has already been done for you. All eyelash extensions are customized in length and curl to suit your specific lash length, desired look and provide a healthy set of eyelash extensions that will not damage your natural lashes.

Are you ready to decorate your home for fall? Celebrate the season with these wonderful fall decorating ideas, tips and inspiration.
HOW TO DECORATE FOR FALL
Decorating for fall is all about bringing the colors and warmth of the season into your home. Colors such as burgundy, rusty red, plum, aubergine, deep greens, mustard and bronze are a nod to the changing colors outside.
Start by switching out summery throw pillows for ones with richer colors and more texture.
Add throw blankets to your couch for family members to easily cozy up.
Adding candles with fall scents such as apple or pumpkin spice will instantly transform your home for the season, making it feel cozy and inviting, even if you’ve done minimal decorating.
WHEN SHOULD YOU START DECORATING FOR FALL?
September is always best, once temperatures start to cool down, is the perfect time to start decorating for fall. With kids back to school, the summer is officially over
and it’s time to embrace a new season! Of course, some people like to get a head start in late August and others like to wait until the much cooler weather in October.
AFFORDABLE WAYS TO DECORATE
Bring the outdoors in - use branch clippings and greenery from your yard.
Add layers and texture to your couch by switching out throw pillows and adding throw blankets. Fill a bowl with apples, mini pumpkins or another seasonal fruit or vegetable. Put fall scented candles in
every room- we are loving Sweater Weather from Bath & Body Works. Fill a dollar store hurricane vase with acorns from your yard oru se pinecones as decorative accents. Check out Hushh.club for free printables for DIY framed Fall art.
LIVING ROOM
DECORATING IDEAS
I like to start with a color scheme when I am decorating for the autumn season. You can stick to traditional fall colors like burnt orange, amber and rusty reds or go the more non-traditional route with saturated blues, greens and plums.
• W E E IST T O L VE A N D ULA E OEP EL
I also love to add touches of copper which mimic the colors of the season in a fun way. Decorating for fall doesn’t have to mean completely redoing your decor. By simply switching out a few throw pillows and adding a few decorative touches to your mantel or coffee table, you’ll embrace the season without overwhelming your living room.
For mantel decor, layer in greenery or faux leaves with mini pumpkins
(real or faux). Finally, add ambiance with candles in your favorite fall scent.
FALL KITCHEN DECORATING IDEAS
Decorating your kitchen for fall can be as simple as adding some branches to a vase or seasonal fruit to a bowl. You can of course be more elaborate and switch out shelf decor for seasonally theme items, add in a fall-themed kitchen towel display copper canisters and scented candles.
ELEGANT
FALL CENTER PIECES
decorating my dining room table for fall in preparation for the holidays to come. For Christmas, my dining table centerpiece is usually traditional but for fall and Thanksgiving, it can be fun to mix it up.
Eucalyptus makes for an affordable, elegant yet simple base for a fall centerpiece. Simple drape it down the center of the table and alternate the placement of mini pumpkins along the sides.
You can use mini orange pumpkins, white pumpkins, plastic dollar store varieties painted to match your color theme or even the pretty fabric kind. But don’t stop there! Apples or pears (real or faux) look amazing as part of an elegant fall table setting, too!
Tablescapes are another place where you can layer in copper elements. Copper Moscow Mule mugs add the perfect punch of contrasting color to this otherwise monochromatic color scheme.
I love
If you really love copper as part of your fall decor, then you can go all-in like I did with one of my this copper and sage Thanksgiving table setting.
Again, notice the use of the seeded eucalyptus. Green and copper are a match made in heaven!
If you are planning a fall soiree or need a beautiful centerpiece for your Thanksgiving dinner, creating your own flower arrangement inside a hallowedout pumpkin always has the wow factor.
This one was made with eucalyptus (are you sensing a theme, here?) as well as some mini roses inside an heirloom pumpkin. I wanted to keep the colors simple, but have fun with whatever color of flower you want.
DECORATING IDEAS FOR OUTSIDE
Use a variety of Cinderella or heirloom pumpkins plus chrysanthemums in a variety of sizes. Purchase containers from the dollar store to act as planter pots. Layer in mini candle holders with tealights. When decorating your front porch or front steps for the fall,
chrysanthemums and pumpkins are always a winner.
Again, start by picking a color scheme. Use that as a starting point to purchase your mums and pumpkins.
I like to pick whatever color mum I want and go from there. For this particular setup. I wanted the really deep purple mums and some of that burgundy red color that you see in the planter pots.
The pots by the way, are actually plastic bins from the Dollar Store. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a cohesive look!
I buy my pumpkins are Trader Joe’s every year because they have by far the most affordable prices, and the little lanterns are from Michaels and I’ve used them for years in a variety of ways. See more at jennakateathome.com

Knox County “Weighs” In
Obesity is now recognized to be among the top global public health issues. Obesity is defined as excessive or abnormal fat accumulation that impacts one’s health. Over the past four decades, the worldwide obesity rate has nearly tripled. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a report that noted that obesity has risen to epidemic proportions from a global perspective. In 2016, the WHO reported there were more than 650 million overweight adults impacted by extra weight. Experts anticipate that by the year 2025, there will be more than 1 billion obese adults. What does that mean for Tennessee?
In 2020, it was estimated that the adult obesity population in the United States was the highest ever - exceeding 40% for the first time. However, as one would expect, obesity rates vary among states. Adult obesity rates in Tennessee are among the highest, with more than 35% of adults with a BMI in the obesity category, compared to Colorado with about 24%, the lowest in the nation. The severity of obesity is concerning because as recently as 2000, there were no states with adult obesity rates above 25%! Demographic trends in Tennessee reveal that rural or less-educated residents are among those with the highest obesity rates.
Obesity in Knox County, Tennessee Dietspotlight, a highly-trafficked health and wellness site, recently shared data on men and women across the United States who’re searching for help with losing weight. Here’s what they found:
Men in Knox County tend to weigh around 222 pounds. They have a body mass index (BMI) of 31.0just above the obese rating.
Women weigh around 194 pounds and have a BMI of 32.2. Nearly identical to men in the county.
As for the overall county population, residents should lose around 57 pounds to reach a “healthy” weight. “That’s 6% lower than the state average of 61 pounds and 3% lower than then country average of 59 pounds,” according to Dietspotlight.
The University of Tennessee’s Extension Family/ Consumer Sciences (UT) champions the state’s efforts to address obesity. Along with the CDC, UT administers the High Obesity Program (HOP) that covers four counties in western Tennessee. The Tennessee Nutrition & Consumer Education Program (TNCEP) is a state-managed (TDHS) & USDA-funded program for those receiving SNAP assistance. The program seeks to help SNAP recipients make better choices with regard to nutrition and physical activity. Better lifestyle choices reduce the chances of getting one of the likely preventable, obesityrelated conditions

Choosing what is best for you!
Body Wraps
Professionally done body wraps are a great way to jump-start your weight loss journey. Yes, you read that right! Paired with a nutritious diet and exercise, you can be on your way to better health and wellness. Ingredients like coffee, green tea, cocoa butter, brown sugar and sea salt seem to be more at home in your kitchen. The most trusted brands in the industry, use natural substances to help drain fluid, detoxify, control fat formation and its disposal, reduce cellulite, tone and moisturize the skin. Wraps can remove toxins, shrink fat cells, reduce inflammation, and deliver measurable inch loss.
Microcurrent
Microcurrent is natural to your body; it mimics your body's own electrical current, which is responsible for your involuntary muscles (breathing, heartbeat, etc). Your body welcomes Microcurrent treatment because the body is familiar with the Microcurrent process.
Microcurrent is a low level of electricity that triggers chemical reactions at a cellular level in order to enhance the production of natural collagen and elastin, provide circulatory benefits and re-educate the muscles of the face. The result is immediate firming, smoothing and re-hydrating to the skin, while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Microcurrent lifts, sculpts and tightens, provides immediate results and has no downtime. It can relax and smooth wrinkles and lift sagging facial muscles. Additionally it is a secret weapon for alleviating acne. It is like yoga for your face.
Radio Frequency
Radio Frequency waves have a unique ability to penetrate into the body and target the required tissues without damaging the surrounding skin and tissues. These waves, after penetrating into the body, heat up collagen in the inner layers of skin. Collagen is a naturally occurring fibrous protein that is responsible for keeping skin tight and elastic. Heating the collagen leads to shrinkage and tightness of skin.
Radio Frequency Treatment (RFT) involves aiming high frequency waves on the cellulite area, where it penetrates into the skin and heats up fat deposits under the skin. The technician will keep heating the cellulite until it breaks up. Once this happens, the treated area is massaged in a bid to stimulate the lymphatic system which ultimately flushes out the fat cells. Besides accelerating collagen production, RFT also stimulates regeneration of skin cells, helping you to achieve new, youthful skin free of lumps.
Cavitation
The Ultrasound Cavitation procedure uses ultrasound and radio waves to break down fat cells and cellulite without affecting nearby organs and cells. The disrupted fat cells will then process through the digestive system naturally. Unlike surgical fat loss treatments, with Ultrasound Cavitation there’s no pain, scarring, bleeding and no risk of infection or downtime needed for recovery. During the procedure, a technician will apply a hand tool that transmits lowlevel ultrasonic waves to your skin. The
compression-expansion impulses create micro-bubbles that enlarge, collide, and implode, producing shock waves that “leak” the content of fat cells in a process called cavitation. The waste material is then processed through the liver and released from the body through sweat and digestive elimination.
A one-hour treatment can cover a mediumsized area of your body, such as the belly, inner or outer thighs, buttocks or your back. Smaller areas such as the chin or upper arm can be treated together. Multiple treatments on the same area are recommended for maximum effectiveness. Extra belly fat, for example, may need 3-6 treatments, while larger areas will need more. Some results will be visible immediately, but the entire process can take several days to complete (peak results are usually seen within 72 hours of treatment). Results will depend on the condition of the eliminated fat, including how long it has existed and how dense it is.
Vacuum Therapy
Vacuum therapy is a noninvasive massaging technique that helps to lift your skin via a mechanical device equipped with suction cups. While it originally entered the market during the 1970s as a way to help treat burn scars, this treatment has evolved into a nonsurgical butt lift method.
Vacuum therapy is also known as vacuotherapy and depressomassage. Aside from purportedly offering similar effects to those of a surgical butt lift, the procedure is also sometimes used to mimic a traditional breast lift.Certain forms of vacuum therapy are also used for the treatment of cellulite.

Meal Replacement and Protein Bars
Making the best choice
There are tons of snack bars out there in today’s society, which begs the question: Which is the best meal replacement bar snack? Most people assume that the “traditional” bars are the best option because these bars generally come in large sizes and offer many different types of bars (such as chocolate bars, peanuts, etc.), as well as various flavors and fillings. However, these types of bars usually lack one key element: protein! Meal replacement bar and a typical protein bar are actually not the same things; in short, some are nutritionally poor and completely unbalanced.
The best meal replacement bars are those that come loaded with micronutrients, both carbohydrates and proteins. These kinds of bars provide the body with everything it needs in order to properly rebuild cells and maintain muscle tissue throughout the day. For example, the carbohydrates found in fruits and vegetables contain the necessary micronutrients to help the body replace those nutrients as it breaks them down.
Likewise, proteins-in the form of chicken, fish, or egg-are great sources of protein that the body can use for energy. Also, the fats found in nuts, eggs, or oils are also great sources of fat that the body can use for energy. All of these nutrients are important for building muscle tissue and muscle strength, so make sure that the bars that you choose have all of these important ingredients.
While protein is important for the maintenance of healthy muscles, consuming it immediately following exercise can allow your muscles to recover more quickly, allowing you to work out harder
and longer without the risk of muscle soreness or inflammation. This is one of the reasons protein bars are such a great way to add protein to your post-workout meal. Protein bars make hitting those post-workout macros so much easier than it used to be just a few decades ago. However, not all protein bars are the same. The best protein bars will give you information telling you how many carbs and fats are in the products you are buying; this should be the first place to look. Ingredients are key in maintaining your goals whether you are building muscle or losing fat.
The best thing to keep in mind with meal replacement and protein bars is even though they are a good tool, they are not a replacement for whole meals. Try not to get in the habit of choosing a bar over whole food for convenience sake. However, use them as a good source to make better choices when in a bind. You have to treat a protein bar as you would any other food, and if you see too many unfamiliar words on the ingredients list, just put it back on the shelf.
The Bottom Line: Check the ingredients and calories to make sure you are eating the right amount of quality ingredients for optimal results.

Must Have Fall Car A c
i e s
Soon, you’ll be driving to a weekend football game along with 100,000 other people, and you’ll have no idea where to park. Then you’ll drive to an apple orchard near the mountains with the cutie from the coffee shop, but you’re going to get lost and look like a fool, and she’s going to text someone else and forget all about you by Monday. Meanwhile, your phone will die because you forgot a charger, and you won’t be able to watch TikToks and life might as well be over at that point.
Because fall is around the corner and all of this is going to happen in the coming months, we’ve compiled a few in-car essentials to make your driving experience more enjoyable, more possible, and mostly, more fun.

Find out why we love Fall in East Tennessee.
The Heart of East Tennessee
By: Alyssa B. Martin
Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains rests one of the most beautiful wonders of East Tennessee-The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Smoky Mountains are the most visited national park in the United States. If you’ve ever driven through the park, especially in the fall, it’s not hard to imagine why- crimson and mustard colored leaves drift to the ground by a crisp breeze with every twist and turn you take. Breathtaking is an understatement.
There are countless activities everyone in the family can enjoy in the 384 miles of the Smokies and even branching a bit out of the region.
One of the most popular, unique attractions is Cades Cove. This 11 mile scenic loop was once home to early American Settlers. Now it is the best place in the mountains to view wildlife, while learning a bit about the history of the area. At the entrance of the cove, you’ll find a camping area, perfect for picnicking before you begin the loop, and a horse stable, where visitors can take a guided ride through the woods of
the cove. If riding horses isn’t for you, visitors are also welcome to bike or walk, although most choose to drive. Whichever mode of transportation one chooses, Cades Cove should be number one on your Smoky Mountain Bucket List.
It is difficult to visit the park without experiencing the beautiful scenery in one of the 150 marked hikes. If you’re a lover of waterfalls, Spruce Flats Falls is the perfect hike for you. Located directly behind Tremont, this 1.4 mile round trip hike provides beautiful views of changing foliage and a quiet resting spot at the end for a quick dip or photo-op, making it the perfect evening hike. If you’re looking to challenge yourself a bit more, Abrams Falls in Cades Cove is 5.5 miles out and back. Even though it, too, has a peaceful resting spot at the foot of a waterfall for a quick dip or photo-op, this hike tends to be slightly more trafficked due to the trailhead starting halfway through the Cove.
However, not all of the hikes in the Smokies have a water feature. In fact, at 4 miles one way, Charlies Bunion is one of the most popular hikes in the Smoky Mountains, and it
is also part of the Appalachian Trail. Part of this hike contains exposed cliffs and ends at an elevation of 1600 ft, yet contains some of the most beautiful views in the park with distant mountains and valleys surrounding the end of the hike, perfect for witnessing the colors of fall in the Smokies. More hikes in the park can be found at https://www. nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/hiking. htm, along with answers to any questions you may have.
Flowing swiftly through the Smoky Mountains, the Pigeon River is a hot spot for tubing, fly fishing, picnics and relaxing. With so many various activities, it’s nearly impossible for someone to not find something they enjoy doing. Even if it is sitting next to the river reading a book or taking photos of salamanders. On the Little Pigeon River in Townsend, Tennessee-a branch off the Pigeon River-River Rat, a tube-renting company, allows park visitors a day on the river with a bus ride to a secure dropoff spot. They also have a specified pick up either 1 or 2 miles from the dropoff location, depending on your outpost. Park visitors are also welcome to bring their own floats to glide down the
river; however, it is helpful to have a ride back to your vehicle.
Not far from the Little Pigeon River, leaves fall like crimson and mustard snow as a musky, sweet aroma filters through the air while people cruise through the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not too far from the Smoky Mountains, this is one of the most beautiful drives near East Tennessee. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs 469.1 miles and connects the Smokies in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. During fall months, a day drive through The Dragon-11 miles of switch back curves through dense trees and falling leaves-up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and through the Smokies for some peace and quiet is especially popular and beautiful. For the classic car enthusiasts, that help make the Pigeon Forge Rod Runs & Shades of the Past some of the largest classic car and hot rod show in the Southeast, look forward to taking this drive in their beloved hot rods. With dozens of pull offs to enjoy the surrounding mountains and valleys, take photos or divulge in a picnic with your loved ones, the Blue Ridge Parkway exudes all the reasons everyone loves the
mountains in East Tennessee during the fall, without having to leave the comfort of your car, if you don’t want to.
The park is more than just beautiful scenery and capturing glances of wildlife. It holds precious memories and represents a part of what it means to be an East Tennessean. A sense of home and feeling centered comes with breathing in the fresh, crisp autumn air. Emily Piercy, for instance, lover of the Smokies, photographer, mother and wife, grew up visiting the park with her family once or twice a week and camped multiple times a year, establishing a love of nature and adventure in her soul. Now as an adult, she shares her love for the Smoky Mountains with her three daughters by taking them as often as she can. When she enters the park, she is reminded of being a
kid and tries to make the most of her surroundings with her passion for photography and love of her family and nature. This is the same for so many who grew up in East Tennessee.
Although originally intended for Yellowstone National Park, John Muir captured it perfectly by stating, “The mountains are calling, and I must go.” Being in the park changes who you are, it alters your perspective, even if it’s just for a little while. With no distractions, you’re able to be as you wish and let the rest of the world move around you, making it the perfect fall destination, whether it be for a few hours or days.

‘Gating’ Back to Tradition
When asked about tradition, after a native East Tennessean finishes the last verse of “Rocky Top”, Tennessee Football is next on the list. Despite not having the best record in recent years, it is undeniable that Tennessee Football fans are loyal to a fault. With loyalty and the love for the Vols, naturally tailgating becomes a part of this deep, rich tradition.
Although tailgating today likely has a slightly different meaning, the first tailgating part was said to be in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton. Fans backed their pickup trucks around the field and sat on the tailgate to watch the game-hence the namesake of the party. Although fans today still partake in eating and drinking, their tailgates are slightly different. Most are very familiar with these parties; however, they typically involve drinking alcoholic beverages, grilling and party games, such as cornhole. However, specific to the Tennessee Vols, many tailgate only a block away from Neyland Stadium in Circle Park.
This begins one of the best, most important traditions for Vols Football Fans-The Vol Walk. Beginning in Circle Park and ending at Gate 21 of Neyland Stadium, the Vol Walk gets fans and players extra excited for the game that is about to commence.
The ritual started nearly 30 years ago as “a spirit-infused pep rally” to help motivate players before a rival game in 1990. The idea for the Vol Walk was inspired by a similar tradition at the University of Auburn; however, the Tennessee Vols have made it their own by adding the Pride of the Southland Marching Band, as well as thousands of supporters lining the entire walk from Circle Park to Neyland’s entrance.
In recent years, sailgating has become more popular with the Vol Navy. George Mooney, a former radio broadcaster, grew tired of fighting the Knoxville traffic to reach Neyland Stadium. In 1962, he found that driving and docking his little boat on the Tennessee River made for a much nicer and efficient game day. This began the tradition of sailgating with UT and further eventually formed the Vol Navy. Like tailgating, many participants make sailgating an all day party leading up to kickoff.
Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 virus in 2020, heavy restrictions were placed on tailgating, sailgating and football in general. Public health protocols were taken into
consideration when considering restrictions. Many remember only being able to stack boats two deep, still required to wear face coverings when interacting with other boats and maintaining social distancing during last year’s Vol football season. Tailgating on campus, although permitted, was only available to limited capacity. Facial coverings and social distancing were also required, and large groups were not allowed, as well as many other requirements.
Not being able to tailgate or sailgate in the traditional way left most Vol fans longing for the way it used to be-the lost tradition. However, this year will be much better. Neyland Stadium will be back to full capacity for the 2021 football season, just in time to celebrate it’s 100 year birthday. Although there will be some mandates to attend games, a full capacity stadium of cheering fans brings back the most important traditions. With the longing of a sense of full normalcy again, tailgating and sailgating will be back and better than ever this year to breathe tradition and the love of Tennessee Football back into the East Tennessee fall air once more. Go Vols!

Located in the middle of East Tennessee with a Smoky Mountain backdrop, Downtown Knoxville-home of the Tennessee Vols-contains some of East Tennessee’s most iconic attractions and local favorites.
Once hosting the fairgrounds to the 1982 World’s Fair, World’s Fair Park now remains a free park for locals and visitors to enjoy while preserving a bit of Knoxville history.

businesses participate in the Farmers’ Market. With fresh produce, beautiful art and local creations, the Farmers’ Market represents East Tennessee’s culture and what makes East Tennesseans proud to call this area home.
Standing 26 stories tall in the middle of the park, the iconic Sunsphere still stands from the original fair. It was constructed a year prior in 1981, made of 24 karat gold, and remained vacant afterwards for many years until 2008. Now serving as a symbol for Knoxville, it’s not the only thing still drawing people to World’s Fair Park. The amphitheater was also built for the 1982 World’s Fair and serves as a site for concerts and private events.
The performance lawn, which covers over 200 yards, is set up to support special events or concerts and serves as a natural amphitheater. While the Court of Flags Fountain area allows children and families a place to cool off on warm days in the splash pad, while getting a glimpse of the area’s origin story.
Market Square, just a few blocks away, houses some of Knoxville’s favorite events, and it has been a local favorite since the 1860s. With dozens of options for food, drinks, activities and gatherings, it is a no brainer of why locals and East Tennessee visitors love it so much.
Every Saturday from May through November, local artists, farmers and
While the air is crisp, you may catch a special festival or movie at the stage depending on the day. However, Market Square is also home to part of the infamous Mural Walk and Charles Krutch Park. All over Downtown Knoxville, you can find commissioned pieces of art that represent East Tennessee and its history.
Between the Square and Gay Street, is Strong Alley where dozens of local artists have painted graffiti-type murals along the walls, including a portrait of Dolly Parton. Connected to Market Square, you can find Krutch Park; a short, quiet tree covered walkway surrounded by beautiful, thought provoking sculptures. It is perfect for a few relaxing moments to yourself while taking in a piece of Downtown’s history with the art. No matter the day though, visitors can always expect live music, even if it’s just street performers, dozens of delicious restaurants, cute boutiques and a lively, energetic atmosphere while in Market Square.
Downtown Knoxville is full of culture, history and friendly faces. So whether you’re in the mood to relax with loved ones, experience nightlife or take a Saturday morning stroll through the Farmers’ Market, there’s a little bit of something for everyone in or around Downtown Knoxville.
Not directly in Downtown but starting in
Knoxville, twisting and turning through East Tennessee into Chattanooga and the Cumberland Plateau and eventually joining the Ohio River, the Tennessee River is a another iconic focal point of Knoxville.
Running 652 miles, this mighty body of water is hard to miss, even if you tried. It forms in the heart of Knoxville, making the Tennesse River the perfect place to spend a fall day with loved ones. On many Saturdays, you can find Tennessee Football Fans sailgaiting before home games outside of Neyland Stadium.
The Star of Knoxville, a popular riverboat, glides you down the Tennessee River as you experience the beautiful views of Knoxville, without dealing with all the traffic, especially during fall, while the UTK colored leaves hit the River and you drift away with a Smoky Mountain and Neyland Stadium background. Able to hold up to 235 passengers, the Star makes for a unique place to hold special events, including weddings, or just enjoy a lunch tour down the River with family and friends.
Regardless of how you wish to enjoy it, the Tennessee River allows visitors to the area a chance to see what is most loved about Knoxville-the lively yet relaxing atmosphere, the diverse culture, the rich history and the beauty of East Tennessee.
Tennessee Valley Fun
By: Alyssa B. Martin
Originally named the Appalachian Exposition, then changed to East Tennessee Division Fair, the Tennessee Valley Fair has been an East Tennessee staple since 1910. As far back as anyone alive today has known, Chilhowee Park has been the home of the beloved fair. However, that was not always the case.
In the beginning, Knoxville was selected to hold the Appalachian Expedition, the first expedition held in the southern Appalachian region. Although the values behind the expedition are the same as the Tennessee Valley Fair, it wasn’t until 1916 until the expedition was re-branded and permanently became a beloved annual event and 1920 when James G. Sterchi purchased Chilhowee Park to be the fairgrounds. The park was later purchased by the City of Knoxville in 1930, during the Great Depression, to ensure Chilhowee Park would forever remain home to the Tennessee Valley Fair and took over the park’s year-round operations in 1978.
The Tennessee Valley Fair has held many firsts through the years and became a tradition, special place to many people in the area despite facing many obstacles. In 1926, the fair dropped 100,000 free tickets across East Tennessee by airplane and also showed the first ever talking movie during the fair. Less than 20 years later in 1942, the fair was unfortunately
canceled due to World War II and was not able to resume until 1946. In recent years, the Tennessee Valley Fair has helped students learn about and grow a love for agriculture, furthering East Tennessee’s legacy. The fair has also grown up and coming artists, as well as bringing more people together through engagements, quality family time, good food and a friendly, positive, safe atmosphere.
Community has always been important to those involved with the Tennessee Valley Fair. On the 99 year mark of the fair in 2018, the Tennessee Valley Fair Foundation was established. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, their “mission is to preserve East Tennessee’s heritage by promoting agricultural awareness, supporting educational programs, and cultivating youth development,” according to the Tennessee Valley Fair website. With the support from community members, they work to create scholarships and learning opportunities for youth while giving back to the community. More information on getting involved is available on the Fair’s website.
Although the original purpose of the Fair was to showcase East Tennessee’s heritage and agriculture, and remains so, the Tennessee Valley Fair is so much more than that. This year organizers announced there will now be 10 days filled with
learning, games, attractions, agriculture and live music! The Rodeo, ATV and Tractor / Truck Pulls, Demolition Derby are only a fraction of what the fair has to offer. This year will also feature a Beer Garden, Butterfly Kingdom, Fireworks, a Fair Food Throwdown, Mayberry Day, Hometown Heroes, dozens of food options, Cotton Candy Classic 5k and live performances from Riley Green, Joe Nichols, John Anderson and more!
The fair kickoffs on September 11th with tickets priced at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and children 6-11 years old and children 5 and under free, all at the gate. Those attending the fair should also be prepared to pay for parking and visit www.tnvalleyfair.org for more information, including bag policies and concert ticket sales.
Being Active in Your Self-Care
What makes you get out of bed in the morning? Think about something that is only about you (You can be selfish here). What gives you life like a breath of fresh air? Self-care is not only about healing. An important part of your selfcare journey is nurturing your passions & fire and holding space for what makes you truly happy on the inside.
WHY SELF-CARE = NURTURING YOUR PASSIONS
Google the definition of self-care and you’ll see that self-care means “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health.” For me and in this context, self-care means preserving my mental and emotional health by not ignoring what ignites me and gives me life. Self-care means pursuing and nurturing my interests as an opportunity to grow and learn. It’s also a chance to seek after what makes me happy.
Can you really nurture your own mental and emotional health if you don’t acknowledge and tend to what you’re passionate about in this life? I don’t think you can. (I tried it and one day I’ll have the courage to share how and why that doesn’t work.)
Perhaps your life doesn’t allow you to pursue your passion(s) full-time. I’ve learned this doesn’t mean you stop pursuing this fire altogether! Take care of you by finding time weekly (even daily, if you can) to pursue your passion(s). You might have to get creative here, too. Say you’re passionate about aquatic life. Maybe one day or week you watch a documentary about aquatic life while researching a marine wildlife rescue center near you. The next week or month, you may read a book about marine rescue.
Not near a marine wildlife rescue? Find a local nature preserve. Most likely they have some type of conservation or volunteer opportunity available for local marine wildlife.
Bone up on your swimming. Summer may be over, but there are several indoor swimming facilities, your local gym or if you’re in Knoxville- try Ski Scuba Center. They have classes for all levels learning to dive.
Maybe you have to plan for a trip to pursue your passion. What training do you need to take to help? Research local classes to take or now a days you can find it online.
Does fitness spike your interest? There are many fitness classes and adult sports start in the fall. Sign up for something-anything-that speaks to you, your interests and your fitness level.

theimanimichelle.com
Perhaps you want to try high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Not something I would jump at the chance to do, but hey, it’s not my passion. Then there’s some low-impact activities, such as Tai Chian excellent stress reliever, by the way. Check with your local city event page. Many times these types of classes can be found for free.
But back to me (being selfish again), I grew up thinking that I knew what I was passionate about in my life.
I was wrong.
Maybe I wasn’t wrong per se but just confused. I ignored any other passion in my life thinking I wouldn’t be happy pursuing those things. Do you want to know something funny? My friends and colleagues could see the things that light me on fire; they predicted that in the future, I’d being pursuing these passions. Of course, I laughed and didn’t believe them.
Low and behold though, I rediscovered my fire. Despite my endless fears and self-doubt, I’m wholeheartedly pursuing my fire with faith and hard-work.
Pursuing this passion (even if I can’t full-time) feels like I can function again. I feel lighter.
Determining Your Fire
If you’re reading this and can’t figure out your fire, consider these questions (maybe write them in the blank as a reminder):
1) What topics do you find yourself willingly researching?
2) Review the accounts you follow on social media. Is there commonality among the accounts?
3) What were you passionate about before you had to pursue other career opportunities?
4) Do you enjoy watching documentaries with similar topics? What is that topic?
5) Think of the books that you’ve read. Which books did you enjoy reading? Is there commonality among those books?
May your journey in pursuing and nurturing your passions be as freeing as mine.

Did you know?
2021 is the bicentennial of Sequoyah finishing the syllabary in 1821. Sequoyah had announced in 1809 in his blacksmith shop that the Cherokee could create a writing system to put their Cherokee words on paper. He spent 12 years of his life trying to create a writing system. We know he tried different types of writing systems, but these different systems would not work for him.
When Sequoyah discovered the sounds of the Cherokee language, he then realized that he could take each of the syllables and give it a symbol. He then could sound out the Cherokee word and using his symbols, and he could write any Cherokee word. The Cherokee speaker could spend some time learning the symbols and then could sound out and read or sound out and write their Cherokee words on paper.
February 21, 1828 was the first issue of the Cherokee Phoenix, 193 years ago. The Cherokee press and type were shipped by water from Boston in November, 1827. They arrived at Augusta, Georgia, via Savannah, and finally reached the New Echota in January 1828 after an overland trip by wagon.

This was a description of the press by John Wheeler, the first printer. This is from an email Duane King, Ph.D. sent Lyn Henley, the museum exhibit designer, during the design phase. It mentions "The absence of newsprint caused a delay..." due to the Press weighing so much and the newsprint was left behind. Then it mentions, "A supply finally was obtained from Tennessee...." Does anybody in Knoxville want to guess? The paper was obtained at Papermill, near present day McKay's right off of Papermill Drive.
With the guidance and expertise of Brian Baker, owner of Striped Light, the museum finally got started organizing their syllabary type.
This year Sequoyah Birthplace Museum will be celebrating Sequoyah's achievements throughout the years. Plan to visit Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and celebrate 200 years of Cherokee literacy with Sequoyah's creation of the syllabary in 1821. Keep checking their website and facebook page for events.

A new restaurant concept, “harvest – land, sea & vine,” is located in Bearden at the corner of Kingston Pike and Mohican, directly across from Nama Sushi Bar. Enjoy people watching on their outdoor dining patio and take in the hustle and bustle of Bearden’s Art District.
One of the unique aspects of the “harvest” concept is a rotating menu that coincides with the change of harvest seasons and the utilization of local farmers to source many of its menu offerings. They have a full-service bar with a curated wine list, craft cocktails and local craft beers.
Geoff Kenney is the Executive Chef for “harvest” and leads the culinary team. Kenney most recently has served as a Corporate Chef for Nama Sushi Bar and Cru Bistro.

Good restaurants happen by design, not by accident. Corner16 stays true to that mission. Every area in Corner16 puts the focus on relationships — new and old — and the stories in the making. Warm yourself by the outdoor fire pits. Grab a beer and watch the game in the lounge. Catch up with an old friend over lunch out on the patio. Or dine inside and enjoy a quick break from work.
Corner16 is that place of overlap for friends to intersect their busy lives and spend time enjoying good company and good food. You probably don’t need an excuse to savor exceptional Southern cooking, but with that said, they invite you to come find your happy place there.
Balter started out over home brews in their garage. After rehabilitating an old service station in downtown Knoxville, they opened in February 2016. Their dream became reality, and they have kept their approach simple to create a welcoming environment that celebrates craft beers and made from scratch food. Every bite and every sip at Balter is crafted daily from scratch, using the freshest ingredients available. Nothing is boring at Balter, they are constantly refreshing food and beer menus to highlight seasonal delicacies. Balter offers a place for friends and family to reconnect in a space that weaves urban aesthetics with the history of the old service station.

PUMPKIN ice bucket
We’ve seen this amazing idea all over Pinterest, and we just had to try it for ourselves. We figured it was only appropriate to fill such an ice bucket with pumpkin beer…but you can also use it for wine bottles, champagne, or even soda!
What do you think? Does your next party need a pumpkin ice bucket? It would look great with your next football party, perfect for a Halloween party or even with your Thanksgiving spread!
All you need is a large, squat pumpkin, a bowl, ice, and your drink of choice. Here’s how to make your very own pumpkin ice bucket:
Step 1: Cut off the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the insides. You’ll want to cut lower than you usually would when carving a jack-o-lantern so that you have the biggest opening possible.
Step 2: Find a bowl that fits inside the pumpkin. We used the outside of a salad spinner! It was the perfect size.
Step 3: Add ice.
Step 4: Add beer!
Step 5: Throw a party!

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
Sculptures & Murals
The Dogwood Arts “Art in Public Places” program brings art outside, adding character and beauty to our city streets and spaces. The program includes an annually rotating, outdoor sculpture exhibition and a large-scale mural program that is entering its second year. The sculptures are installed in prominent locations throughout Knoxville, Oak Ridge and Alcoa. Started in 2007 by Eddie Mannis and Bart Watkins, the Art in Public Places sculpture program has curated and installed over 240 works of art and gained national recognition as a platform for exhibiting world-class sculptors.
MURAL PROGRAM
The Art in Public Places Mural Program was established in 2019 to advance existing creative efforts in Strong Alley, transform unique public spaces in our community, provide opportunities for local and regional artists to create new artwork, and improve access to the arts for everyone. Dogwood Arts coordinates and directs this ongoing program in collaboration with artists, property owners, the City of Knoxville and the Downtown Knoxville Alliance.
To date, Dogwood Arts has funded the creation and restoration of 22 murals in Downtown Knoxville. Up to this point, efforts have primarily been focused in Strong Alley (between Market Square and Gay Street) which has been a popular canvas for artists and a creative destination for visitors and residents of the city for over a decade.

Every song has a story and at just 17 years old Callista Clark has a lot to say. Like Maren Morris, Jennifer Nettles, Tori Kelly, Ingrid Andress and so many talented singer/ songwriters that paved the way before her, the young songstress wields her creative gifts as both a defense and an instrument of peace as she puts her heart on display with her forthcoming debut collection Real To Me via Big Machine Records.
Blending her love for authentic, timeless classics with the sounds of her Country roots which sprouted from her hometown of Zebulon, Georgia, Clark “puts a fresh spin on soul phrasing” (Billboard). Gearing up to release her debut music, she’s worked with many of Nashville’s leading songwriters including Jonathan Singleton, Laura Veltz, Nicolle Galyon and Emily Shackleton, among others. The proof Clark could hold her own among Nashville’s most prominent is evident in the feisty anthem of “Change My Mind,” the poignant and relatable truths of “Real to Me” and the declaration of confidence in “It’s Cause I Am.”
It’s her ability to be both assertive yet vulnerable and empowering while brutally honest that makes “Real to Me” such an auspicious introduction. Her inspiring videos with which Scooter Braun (SB Projects) and Scott Borchetta (Big Machine Label Group) took notice, have amassed over 65 million views on Facebook and over 6 million views on YouTube.
