What is “Christmas”?
I asked this question on the first Christmas edition we published. While the meaning of Christmas has not changed, what it means to me has over the past seven years.
Since 2014 our family has had a major family member die so it makes each holiday more important, this year is no exception and probably the hardest.
See, this past October my Mom passed away and these past few weeks have been extremely difficult emotionally. I know this Christmas will be harder, but in many ways a little sweeter. Why? Well it’s because of what Christmas is truly about and why it is celebrated. Now the passage of Luke 2: 14 has a new meaning....14 ”Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rest”. I know the Lord’s favor rested on my Mom. She was faithful, not just when things were good but also when things were bad. Even when she broke her hip in March and found out that cancer had returned for the third time, this time stage four, she didn’t ask ‘why is this happening to me’ or lose faith... no she pressed in even harder. Christmas is our hope. For if there was no birth there would not have been a crucifixion and resurrection.
Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

6RULES FOR GIFT-GIVING THIS
Christmas gift shopping can be laborious and stressful if you don’t prepare for it well. Save yourself the trouble this year by following these six simple tips
06 hushh magazine | www.hushh.club
We’re nudging closer and closer to Christmas. You may be looking forward to getting all festive with friends and family. Or you might be full of dread at how much it’s going to cost - and it’s easy to see why. The biggest expense for most is buying presents. Last year it was estimated that adults would spend an average of $886 each just on Christmas gifts. So, how do you still get great gifts without breaking the bank? Here are a few tried and true rules to follow.
IT’S OK TO RE-GIFT
Let’s start with a potentially controversial one. How often have you received a gift from a beaming friend who’s confident it’s perfect for you? But it’s not. At best you simply don’t need it. At worst, you hate it. So it sits unopened and unloved at the back of the wardrobe (if you didn’t take it to the KARM or your garage sale). It’s a complete waste, so it’s better to pass it on this Christmas to someone who will appreciate it.
BE WARY OF GIVING A GIFT CARD
Doing this isn’t ungrateful, and you’re not being a Scrooge either. You’re simply making good use of something that just isn’t for you. Of course you to make sure it’s in new condition and genuinely think that the person you re-gift it to would like it (And make sure you remember who gave it to you in the first place).
If all else fails, lots of gift givers just pick up a gift card. This lets people choose what they want to buy. But you know what gives them even more choice? Cash or check. Money is a far better gift than a gift card as it doesn’t expire, doesn’t lock the purchase down to a single retailer and won’t be cancelled if the shop goes bust.
GET THEM WHAT THEY WANT
You think you’re great at giving presents? Well if you’ve received bad presents in the past then you’ve probably also given a dud gift yourself. The simple solution is to ask people what they want, ideally ask them to give you a few options, andif money is tight let them know your budget (more on this in a bit). Kids in particular will have a Christmas list which should make it lot easier, so why shouldn’t adults?
KNOW YOUR BUDGET
If you’re buying lots of gifts it’s easy to lose track of how much you’re spending. So the simple solution is to have a budget. Obviously there’s the total amount of money you plan to spend, but it’s also worth having a limit on each individual you’re buying for too. This budget should be set based on how much you can afford to spend, not how much the desired gift will cost. Though it’s always tempting to treat our loved ones, they’d hate to know you’re getting into debt as a result.
KEEP THE RECEIPT
Of course, many of you will want to keep the gift a surprise. So if you don’t want to ask, it helps to include a gift receipt. This way, if it’s not something the receiver wants or needs they can exchange it for something they do want. The same goes for clothes too, in case the size isn’t right. This gets harder if you shop online, so you just need to be upfront about it. Let the recipient know you’re happy to exchange the gift yourself if it’s not right.
CONSIDER A “SECRET SANTA”
If you don’t have the money to spend on lots of gifts, there are a few alternatives. You can agree on a price cap with friends and family to which you all adhere. This way you’re all spending the same amount. Or you could run a “Secret Santa” scenario in a small group. Rather than buying five presents of $20, you could each buy a single, more valuable present of $30.

W ith winter comes a renewed focus on our homes for socializing and cocooning. Whether planning a cosy evening in, entertaining friends, or is anticipation of Christmas festivities just around the corner, take the time to create a relaxed and welcoming mood in your home. Decorating our homes for the winter season and creating a magical mood to combat the winter blues can be one of the most pleasurable activities. So dress your home to impress your guests and bring warmth and opulence to your home.
“Add instant warmth and elegance by swapping your summer cushions and throws for warmer fabrics”
Velvet, tartan, wool or faux fur will look fabulous, cozy and inviting. And add warmth to floors with textured rugs in deep colors.
As the evenings get darker, lighting becomes an even more essential part of making our homes feel more welcoming. Create an ambiance with candles and side lights. The choice of light source is significant for creating ambiance in our home. Luxurious scented candles will enhance the mood even more. During the winter months even gardens can be brought to life with atmospheric lighting. Drape fairy lights over tree branches and hang little lanterns on the low-hanging branches. Large storm lanterns will stop candles being blown out in a breeze.
Forage in the garden too, for dried seed heads and branches. Seed heads look striking in a metal vase or within a floral arrangement of rose hips, berries and evergreens. Mix these with a few pine tree branches for added scent. Vases of evergreens and fragrant herbs like rosemary, dotted around the house will provide decoration and fragrance.
“The biggest focal point of all entertaining at home is undoubtably the dining room”
HERE ARE OUR TIPS FOR HOW TO DAZZLE YOUR GUESTS WITH YOUR FESTIVE TABLE SETTINGS.
If you’re looking to make an impact with you table setting, you can’t beat a striking color scheme. Silvers and golds will create a classy yet classic feel, while purples, teals and blacks will establish a more modern aesthetic. Crisp white table linens and crockery will add freshness and look wonderful when paired with gold candlesticks and metallic ornamental touches.
You can have fun with Christmas tree baubles, too, either hanging pendantlike over the table or scattered among the tableware. Or, for a more dramatic effect, combine hanging baubles with vintage ornaments, elegant candelabras and rich color palettes. If you’re looking for something a little more pared back and sophisticated, minimal tableware and black and gold accents should be just the thing.
SHIMMERING LANTERNS AND BAUBLES
Set a party atmosphere and decorate your dining table with glass hurricane lanterns filled with glimmering silver baubles surrounded by plenty of glowing candles. Mix and match Christmas decorations for a laid-back and elegant feel.
METALLIC TOUCHES
Gold and silver at Christmas will never go out of fashion, so choose metallic-edged crockery and mix with classic sparkling glassware. Finish with a white rose and glittering silver bauble at each setting to create a personal touch.
DRAMATIC JEWEL TONES
Mix rich jewel tones and gold for a theatrical, glamorous Christmas dining table. Opulent decorations teamed with large purple and blue hydrangeas will wow guests.
NATURAL CHARM
Choose a simple white and green color scheme for a natural look. Display foliage and flowers in antique-style bottles for a pretty centerpiece.
RELAXED AND RUSTIC
For a relaxed Christmas table setting in an open-plan kitchen-diner, go for a pared-down red and white scheme. A simple table runner will fit the festive spirit. Small vases filled with greenery and berries are ideal as low-level table centerpieces.
MODERN TEAL AND GOLD
Impress your guests by dressing your dining room table with a mix of opulent gold and elegant teal. The warming colors will be a contrast to the crisp white winter outside and dazzling fairy lights will continue the comforting glow.
SOPHISTICATED WHITE
For a sophisticated dining room table setting stick to white linens and a chic dinner set with subtle silver detailing. Continue the glamour with silver crackers and baubles, and ensure there’s plenty of elegant glassware for a smart finish.
CLASSIC WHITE AND GOLD
Keep dinnerware and glassware simple with elegant white china and clear glassware. A couple of glittering gold accessories will add a touch of sparkle to your dining room, while tall, elegant candles will finish the look beautifully.
ELEGANT VINTAGE
Go for a vintage-style Christmas dining room table with distressed and antiquelook baubles, delicate glassware and plenty of candlelight. A simple ribbon tied around the back of each chair makes a pretty finishing.
MINIMAL AND GLAMOROUS
Create an elegant look with minimal tableware and accessories in stylish black and gold. Still sticking with the black theme, you can add fun touches, such as stick-on mustaches to keep the mood jovial.
SPARKLING CENTERPIECE
You can’t beat gems and jewels for livening up a festive dining table. Simply add a wreath to the center of the table and pop a bright jug with a big bundle of evergreen foliage in the middle. Finish off with Jewelled napkin rings to add a touch of bling.
DRESSING FOR THE OCCASION
It’s undoubtedly the most social time of the year. Sparkling occasions abound - Christmas drinks, office parties, New Year’s Eve - it’s enough to make anyone have a wardrobe crisis! Hushh gives you some insight on how to inject some glamour.
Whether planning a special date, heading out for cocktails or hosting a soiree at home, everyone wants to make an impression. Dressing up has become increasingly rare, especially during Covid, but nothing beats it for injecting some glamour into a gathering.
LOOK LIKE YOU MADE AN EFFORT
Gentlemen - even if it’s a casual occasion, you still want to look like you made an effort, don’t you? A pair of dark wash jeans and a simple shirt worn with a v-neck sweater is a good starting point. Add some ‘oomph’ by topping it off with a black leather jacket or contrasting blazer (in wool or tweed). Keep the color palette neutral for evening - think black, grey, and navy - it will be more than appropriate and inject a bit of elegance.
For a more formal do, wear a suit, but don’t make it look like one. What do we mean
by that? Well, lose the tie for starters, and unbutton your top button. You will still look sharp (assuming your shirt and suit fit well) but less like you’re heading to the office. A suit with some pattern or texture (grey check or tweed, for example) will also be more interesting. Add a pocket square and loafers to pull it all together. Stepping up the formality a bit, a dark grey or navy suit will take you almost anywhere, particularly when worn with a classic French cuff shirt fastened with cufflinks (every man should have at least one in the repertoire- if you don’t go see Mark at Fountain City Jewelers). Oh, and worn with a tie, of course. For sharp tailoring options on the high street, try Jigsaw Menswear, Reiss, J Crew or even M&S. Or seek inspiration from men’s clothing and lifestyle website Mr. Porter.
For black tie events, choose a dinner suit in black or midnight blue in wool. Single breasted is the most popular option, although double-breasted is making a comeback. For a modern look, go for a slim leg trouser, and don’t worry about a cummerbund. If you’re going to buy a dinner suit, look to Reiss and of course, Moss Bros.
ACHIEVE EFFORTLESS ELEGANCE
In winter, there are always so many interesting textures to add a touch of the extraordinary - sequins, faux fur, molten metallic fabrics and of course, leather. A leather skirt or trousers with a cashmere sweater or silk blouse, for example, is a funky alternative for dinner or drinks. If you’re hading out straight from the office, a simple black dress worn with boots for day are
transformed by adding heels, jewelry and a sleek clutch.
HERE ARE TOP TIPS FOR ACHIEVING EFFORTLESS ELEGANCE THIS FESTIVE SEASON:
1. The basics matter: Well-fitting and supportive underwear are the foundation of your look - get this right and the rest will follow. If your outfit calls for tights or stockings, seek out Wolford (www. wolfordshop.com). Their colors, patterns and quality are unrivaled.
2. Be prepared: Nothing is more panicinducing than discovering your dress has a broken zipper or you don’t have the right shoes. Try everything on at least a week in advance, giving you time to get any last minute dry cleaning done or to fill any gaps.
3. Mix it up: Mixing high street and designer, new and vintage willcreate a look that is uniquely yours. Seek out smaller boutiques for a more individual look.
4. Think beyond black: Navy, for example, is chic and looks less harsh. Claret and teal are also beautiful tones that suit most skin tones.
5. ...And beyond the dress: Jumpsuits are, quite literally, a ‘one pice wonder’ creating a long fluid silhouette. Reiss has some very elegant jumpsuits in a variety of styles.
Think about the finishing touches, to add polish. Get your makeup applied professionally. This is not the time to experiment with a brand new look - you may not like it, and you want to look like you!
Remember, if you are unsure of the dress code for a particular event, check with your host. It is much better to ask than to risk embarrassment. Whatever you choose to wear, do so with confidence and a smilenothing says elegance quite like it.

Craft Your Very Own Gingerbread House
The holidays just aren’t the same until there’s a gingerbread house involved. This homemade gingerbread house recipe is easy to make, fun to decorate, and delicious to eat. Making a gingerbread house from scratch is so much better than using a kit. The cookies are soft and chewy, yet crunchy and sturdy with crisp edges. And it makes the house just smell like the Holidays! It is sure to delight whether you’re building it as décor for the window or dessert after the big holiday dinner. This classic gingerbread house recipe with template gives you a step-by-step guide for both the gingerbread cookie structure and the royal icing to hold everything together.
HOW TO MAKE THE BEST GINGERBREAD HOUSE
In a large mixing bowl, whisk to combine flour, ginger, cinnamon, all spice, salt, and baking soda. Set aside. In a medium mixing bowl, add egg, melted butter, brown sugar, molasses, and water. Use a hand mixer to beat on medium speed until combined, about a minute. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until just combined, and there are no dry flour particles. Use your hands to form the ball into a dough and divide into two balls. Flatten each ball into a disc and wrap tightly with plastic cling wrap. Chill overnight (or at least for 2 hours). When it’s ready, on a large piece of parchment paper, roll out one dough disc at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. If the parchment paper is slipping around too much, place it on a baking mat to keep it in place while you roll. Next, cut out the shapes from a Gingerbread House Template or try your hand at your own. Use a pizza cutter for the edges and a knife for finer details like the windows.
For the front of the house, cut out the circular window. Trace the shape for the door but don’t completely cut it. You will cut it after baking to better hold its shape. For the back of the house, just cut the outline. You do not need to cut out a window or door. Bake in a 375 F preheated oven for 8-10 minutes until the edges have set. Within the first couple of minutes, use a knife to
cut out the door and set it aside on the baking sheet. Allow the gingerbread to cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Add hard candies (optional). Carefully transfer the cut pieces onto two the half sheet baking pans lined with a silicone baking mat. *For a stained glass look- place a whole jolly rancher into each of the windows. These hard candies will melt to give a stained glass window effect.
HOW TO MAKE ROYAL ICING
Beat the egg whites with an electric hand mixer (or stand mixer) for 10 seconds. Add cream of tartar and beat in. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar, about 1/2 cup at a time. Beat at high speed for 5 minutes until the icing is very stif f. If the icing is too wet, add a little more sugar. If it’s too thick, add a teaspoon of water at a time until desired consistency is reached. You want icing that will easily come out of the piping bag but that will keep it’s shape (not runny). Keep the bowl covered with a wet towel when not using as the icing dries up very quickly.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE
Make a base for the gingerbread house. *Cut a piece of cardboard and wrap it with aluminum tin foil. Attach one corner of the house. Use a piping bag with the no. 5 round tip secured to pipe a thick line along the side of the front piece of the house. Take a side piece and attached it together. Hold it upright onto the base. Then, run thick line of royal icing along the bottom of the two pieces of the house on the inside to help attach it to the base. Hold the two pieces together for a minute or two while the icing sets partially. Attach the other corner of the house. Run a thick line of royal icing along the exposed side edge of the side piece and attach the back of the house. Then, run another thick line of royal icing along the exposed side edges of the back of the house and front of the house and attach the other side piece. Run a thick line of royal icing along the bottom of these two pieces on the inside of the house. Run a
thick line of royal icing along all corners of the house from the inside. Hold together for a minute or two while the icing sets partially. You can use a glass or cans to help prop it up if needed. Let it set for one hour before adding the roof.
Add the roof. Run a thick line of royal icing along the left top side edges of the front and back, and left side piece. Place one of the roof pieces on top and hold it in place for a couple minutes. Run a thick line of royal icing along the right side, and along the center of the attached roof and add the other roof. Run a thick line of royal icing along the center where the two roof pieces meet, if necessary. Hold it in place for a couple of minutes.
Make the chimney. Use royal icing to attach the chimney pieces together. Then run a thick line of royal icing along the bottom of the chimney (where the slanted pieces are) and adhere them to the roof. Hold in place until slightly set, a couple minutes.
Attach the door. Run a thick line of royal icing along the left side of the door piece and attach it to the house slightly ajar.
Hold it in place until slightly set. Seal it together. You can pipe an extra layer of royal icing along the roof and along the edges in a dripping pattern to make it look like snow. Allow everything to set before decorating, about one hour.
Add patterns. Secure a no. 1 round tip to the piping bag. Pipe a scalloped pattern on the roof to resemble shingles. Outline the windows and add decorative dots and squiggles.
Add snow. Take some confectioners’ sugar and use a fine mesh strainer to add “snow” on the top of the roof. You can also sprinkle some shredded coconut on the base to resemble snow on the ground.
Decorate with candy. Pipe a thick layer of royal icing along the edges or wherever you want to stick candies on. Then stick the candies on top.

Allow the gingerbread to cool: You may feel impatient to build your festive gingerbread home, but patience is important here. If your gingerbread is warm, the icing will melt and create a sticky mess instead of working as glue to hold the cookies in place.
Allow the icing to set: As you build your gingerbread house, you will need to hold certain pieces in place for a few minutes and let it set fully at various stages. For the best results, you need to be patient.
How to store a gingerbread house: Store your assembled gingerbread house covered at room temperature for up to 2-3 weeks. It may be tricky to covered a fully decorated gingerbread house, but try to cover it loosely with plastic cling wrap.
Displaying your house: Be mindful that gingerbread houses that are left uncovered as a display will collect dust and other household debris. If you plan on putting out your masterpiece on display for a
K is for Cookie
I know, I know, K- for cookie? Are you “Kooky”? Sorry folks, I couldn’t help it! But that’s just what these cookies bring out in me- my kooky cookie loving side!
When I first found Kooky cookies, they were an online orders only company who just happened to be here in Knoxville (and lucky for me let me pick them up rather than shipped). And let me tell you, once you’ve had a Kooky cookie, you won’t want anything else!
These cookies are a meal in and of themselves. So rich and decadent and the flavor combinations are as amazing as the story of how they came to be!
Margarita McClure is founder of Kooky Cookies, a minority and woman-owned gourmet stuffed cookie company. She’s a wife, mom of four, serial entrepreneur, and a passionate carb pusher.
From Weight Loss Coach to Diet Saboteur! Prior to the pandemic, she worked as a successful health coach and serial entrepreneur (founder and owner of Blueberry & Me cloth diaper company which recognized by the Tennessee Small Business Development Center as its 2012 Rising Star for business excellence).
“COVID-19 really turned things topsy-turvy, and I wanted to help make the world a little sweeter, so I started my (second) cookie business Kooky Cookies! A lot of us have put on weight during the pandemic, so if we’re going to eat our feelings, I wanted to create a cookie worth those calories. (No judgment or shame - it’s been rough!)”
Kooky Cookies are not your average cookies, in fact, they are remarkable and some may even say kooky! Baked fresh every day, you’ll bite into the crunchy outer layer to find a soft, gooey and delicious stuffed center. We baked all of our cookies with natural ingredients, no artificial flavoring, coloring, or preservatives. (So yes, you can have more than 1).
Our cookies are baked fresh to order and shipped the same day with 2 day delivery. We take pride in ensuring your cookies arrive as fresh as the day they slid out of the oven.
We offer 3 different Kooky cookies: Stuffed Cookies, Drop Cookies, and Allergy-Friendly Cookies.

Moonshine Mountain Cookies
Originally created in 1988 here in Knoxville, their base recipe was formulated for their pizza delivery store as a promotion. The response was overwhelmingly positive as customers immediately started calling the store requesting more of their delicious cookies. From that point the cookies found their way into many private parties, gift boxes, bible study groups, and catered celebrations from Knoxville to Nashville. Finally, after many years and much urging from friends & family, Moonshine Mountain Cookie Company was formed.
Their distinctly delicious gourmet cookies are handcrafted in small batches using only the finest ingredients to insure your complete satisfaction. And some of their special recipes even include a splash of original Tennessee moonshine, giving those cookies that special taste that you can’t find anywhere else. They say the process of making their cookies in a micro-bakery environment is “hard work, but we don’t do things the easy way, because we think you, our customers, are well worth the effort”. Now serving Knoxville with 2 stores, corporate clients & events in Nashville, and offering nation wide coverage with online ordering.
