Q: How long does it take to film a season of Iron Resurrection?
No matter the typebusted bikes or rusted out roadsters - every vehicle deserves a second chance to shine. Outside Austin, Texas mechanical master Joe Martin (the winner of Discovery Channel’s “Biker Build-Off”), his wife Amanda, his best friend Jayson “Shag” Arrington and their team at Martin Bros Customs are breathing life back into vehicles of all kinds, shapes and sizes on the Velocity original series Iron Resurrection. Each episode finds Shag and Amanda scouring the Texas countryside for hidden, unpolished mechanical gems to bring back to the shop for Joe and his crew. Amanda keeps the jobs rolling out and the dollars rolling in with her uncanny knowledge of every backwoods shed and car lot in the state, while Shag uses his gift for gab and marketing skills to get the best deals possible.
Q: Joe, how did Martin Brother’s Customs get the top rated television show Iron Resurrection on the Velocity network?
It went back to the days when we did a series for the Discovery channel about 10 or 12 years ago called the Bike Build Off. I had gotten into the motorcycle business by accident and I was doing a lot of the cars. In the mid 1990’s I got into the motorcycle business on a whim and started doing a lot of bikes in the Dallas area - a lot of paint jobs as they weren’t a lot of people doing them at the time. Then one thing led to another and I started building my own bikes and as the TV stuff with Jesse James was coming into play really strong, those same producers asked me to be part of the series called the “Bike Build Off”. So I did that for about 2 or years and we had some pretty
good success. After we went through that, we kept in contact with the producers and then the Velocity channel was born about 6 or 7 years ago and my producers were kind of looking for some new material. My brother had a little bit of video equipment and had interest in it - so we put together a teaser reel that followed us all around the shop and then they bid off on it and really enjoyed it. Everything at that point kind of fell into place for the Velocity network.
It takes about 11 months and we continue to film new shows even when the shows are airing on Velocity.
Are your artistic skills of sketching out a car concept and drawing your natural ability or did you learn it over time?
Well you know, I started drawing when I was a little kid. My mom said I was drawing on the walls and got me a big sketch pad and I would just draw and draw. I can just remember when I was really young sucking at it real bad and I got Hot Rod Magazines and I tried to copy a car and draw it on paper and over the years. I have always liked drawing - whether it is cars, bikes, trains or anything mechanical. I have always just enjoyed it and practiced and practiced. And then as I got into my mid teens, I tried to learn some mechanical things and picked up ideas from guys around my neighborhood as I didn’t have any type of formal training or anything. The local guys in the neighborhood were a lot older than me and let me hang out and learn things and kind of watch and that is how I picked it up. I was always interested in that and I would look at Boyd’s (Coddington) stuff and say I could never afford that – so I have to try and learn how to do it myself and everything that I could and hang out with folks who could teach me something. I was never born with it - I just kept at it.
Q: How has the TV show Iron Resurrection on Velocity affected your personal life? Do you and your wife Amanda get noticed and asked for pictures and autographs?
Yes we do - especially when we are kind of in our own crowd - like SEMA or at car shows. If we are in an airport, we get a lot of that too. There are also a lot of people who don’t even necessarily have cable TV anymore - they have Netflix or are watching shows online - so that is a constant battle to keep an interesting show enough to keep people wanting to subscribe to the channel. We get noticed which is kind of strange to us and we are regular people and we are like, well we have been like this all our life so why do people want us to sign something now. Wayne Carini is a great guy
who has a TV show that appeals to everyone - he is a cool guy. That is what we want to strive for - to inspire get someone to work on the car and learn something. We love what we do and are fortunate enough to do so - we are really lucky.
Q: The camaraderie that the viewers see on Iron Resurrection is so strong and genuine that people want to just hang out and work alongside with you guys.
Well you know we get a lot of turmoil but fortunately the production doesn’t like to cover that stuff. Generally we all get along well. Like in any shop, you are always going to have some problems and that sort of thing. But we don’t like to focus on it. We don’t think it is necessary for the viewers to see all the drama - we just don’t care about it. We just want people to see what we do and focus on the fun of building a car and maybe inspire the guy who has a car sitting in his garage for 10 years for a while to go out and start working on it. We don’t care about any kind of dramatic crap. We wouldn’t go for it even if they suggested that - that’s one thing. I have also known my crew for years and years and you learn who your best guys are, who you get along with great and who you don’t and then weed you those guys out over the years and you build a little team up which we have been very fortunate enough to do that. You get what you see.

How the Unusual Structure for American Car Naming Came to Be
By: Aivaras GrigelevičiusThe current structure of car names stayed the same for several decades now. It is convenient, easily digestible and understandable. Of course, the auto industry still encounters some misunderstandings. Still, it is more an exception rather than a rule.
This time we want to tell a story about a rather unusual but effective car naming system that the Founder of Ford, Henry Ford, came up with.
ONE MODEL - ONE NAME
time of its production, many accustomed to tell only the year and brand’s name. Every buddy would immediately understand what his friend is talking about.
Ford Model T is very often called one of the most important cars in auto history. By creating this model, Henry Ford drastically changed the auto manufacturing formula and proved to the whole world that the majority could afford to buy a car.
The model went popular at an incredibly fast pace. It prompted the Founder of Ford to take action in an unusual way - he completely abandoned the model naming structure used at the time. Until the Model T came out, Ford gave his cars a concise, but clear names: Ford B, Ford C, Ford N.
Wanting to change the system, Henry Ford decided to put his focus only towards the Model T. That was the exact moment in history when Ford changed the auto industry forever. Let us explain why.
Between 1909 and 1927, Ford Model T got many upgrades and creative modifications that allowed it to maintain the title of the most popular car.
Both manufacturer and drivers who bought these cars always referred to these models by saying two phrases. For example, the 1925 Ford, or 1913 Ford. Because Ford Model T evolved during the
This habit had to change in 1927 when Ford released the heir of Model T - Ford Model A.
Trying to maintain the continuity, the manufacturer has been naming every single car as Ford A. However, behind the name lurked a large variety of bodywork types and versions. In fact, you could buy Ford A of 30 different bodywork types! Just imagine a trip to the Ford saloon.
• Hello, I would like to purchase the Ford A.
• Of course, Sir. What kind of bodywork do you prefer?
• I would like a coupe.
• Could you please specify? Do you want Business Coupe, Deluxe Coupe, Special Coupe, or maybe Sport Coupe?
COMPETITORS FOLLOWED
The tactic of “one model for all” caught the attention of major Ford competitors very quickly. One of those competitors was an eternal rival - Chevrolet.
For example, one of its most well-known models is Chevrolet 490 that hides none other than… its initial price. Just like Ford, Chevrolet offered to purchase the 490 varying in many bodywork types, engines, and even seat configurations.
One model policy got traction in 1927 when Chevrolet decided that every time a new model comes out, it will get a unique name. For example, Chevrolet 490 upgraded in 1927 was named Capitol, 1928 version - National, 1929International, 1930 - Universal, 1931 - Independence, 1932 - Confederate. Is it confusing? Definitely not as it allows us to understand what model are we referring to immediately.
Chevrolet and Ford used a similar naming structure up until the beginning of 1950 when a new generation of drivers demanded change and new ideas.
TECHNICALLY THE SAME, VISUALLYNOT AS MUCH
A rapidly growing economy stimulated the appetite of the Detroit giant. In the ‘60s, major auto industry players in the US began expanding their variety of models, including sports cars (Thunderbird and Corvette), compact class (Corvair and Falcon) and even pony car segment (Mustang and Camaro).
As the years went by, the old model structure has been used only in higher class models. Still, this practice was abandoned later on as many car makers thought it was too complicated for the buyers.
Eventually, all car manufacturers decided to dedicate their efforts to models that became classic, making different versions of it. For example, Volkswagen Golf releases Golf Variant, Golf GTI, Golf Sportsvan. Despite changes, Americans didn’t abandon their habits. Even now most just say 1969 Ford, or 1954 Chevrolet or Plymouth.

PLAN YOUR FALL EXCURSION
Autumn means different things to many people. Students may embrace the dawn of a new school year, while others might embrace the crisp weather after a season of heat. One of the more widely enjoyed aspects of autumn is the chance to take in the brilliant foliage.
Although New England may be renowned for its bright, orange, red and yellow panoramas, dazzling displays of foliage can be witnessed right here in your backyard with the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains. As temperatures descend enough for deciduous trees to shed their leaves, the more brilliant the view.
The first step to a successful fall foliage excursion is to find the right spot. From the top of Lookout Mountain in Rock City, Chattanooga, Big South Fork National River along the Tennessee & Kentucky border to the panoramic views from Clingman’s Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains, there are many other areas right here in Tennessee that can be great places to witness nature at its most colorful. To make the most of fall foliage road trips, keep these following suggestions in mind.
• Get off the highway. To see great fall vistas, take a detour from major thoroughfares and visit small towns and mountain passes. Invest in some maps, as cellular networks may be inaccessible in remote locales.
• Avoid tourist-heavy areas. Drivers may prefer less crowded roadways to accompany the great scenery. Such drivers should visit areas that are not tourist meccas. Any area that plays home to forests and sprawling landscapes will do.
• Go on foot. To get the best photos, head out at sunrise or sunset. Soft, golden light dappled by leaves will bring out the golden tones in photos. Going on foot will help you discover the nuances of the season and slow down for a change.
• Don’t overlook overcast days. Traveling in the rain may not be fun, but overcast days might be ideal. On such days,
the sun won’t be too warm and drown out the colors.
• Bring along binoculars. Wildlife is often mobile and abundant in the fall, as animals scurry to feed and gather supplies before the winter. As a result, autumn is a great time to spot wildlife that’s normally hiding in thickets and woodland areas.
• Plan for stops along the way. Don’t forget to bring some spending money in the form of cash so that you can enjoy the small farm stands and shops that often dot rural landscapes.
Pick up farm-fresh produce or choose a plump pumpkin. Yard sales also are abundant this time of year. Small shops may not take credit cards, so if you plan to buy, cash is king.
Trees begin shedding their leaves as early as the beginning of September in Canada and the northern United States. As the days press on, the fall finery will gradually shift southward. For those who can afford to take a weekday off, do so, as weekends might be overcome with fellow nature enthusiasts.
