On behalf of the 2008 Saskatchewan Summer Games organizing committee, thank you to everyone who has worked together to make the “Arts Without Borders Festival” such a tremendous success! The 2007 festival portrayed our community to the province of Alberta with such grace and excellence and we thank the volunteers who have worked so hard to augment our 2008 Summer Games with literary, visual and performing arts for the province of Saskatchewan. During the Games, our border city will be a frenzy of sport and culture and I salute all who take part from the artist and athlete to the spectator and supporter. Mirroring the artist’s efforts on the “Buffalo Twin” Alberta/Saskatchewan Mural displayed at the Vic Juba Community Theatre and Lakeland College, our community has worked together to create an amazing work of art – thank you and enjoy!

Our Festival articulates the individual and public value of the Arts, and engenders public ownership of this value, thus enhancing the quality of life in the Lloydminster region. Stories written and told with passion and wit entrance an audience. Wonderfully crafted and arresting images of beauty, courage and triumph make a lasting impression. Informal discussions about the ideas presented are as engaging as the works themselves.

ART MARKET August 3 & 4 (Sunday & Monday) 11:00 am - 8:00 pm Outdoors at Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Centre 4515 44 Street
Vendors Dawn L. Lawrence Floen has been an art educator at E.S. Laird Middle School in Lloydminster for 22 years. While she has always drawn and painted a bit in acrylics, her interests in the last two years have turned to jewelry design and photography. Both have become strong passions that take up all of her spare time! Her work is influenced by her love for the ocean and antiques. Dawn's work can be found at www.sunshineindustries.ca Michelle Lake is a long time resident and well known artist in Lloydminster. Michelle won an Honorable Mention for the Best of Show Award in the 2007 Juried Art Show. Her painting was called Full Bloom. She also makes wonderful willow work items. She will have a great selection of items for sale. Brenda Wyllie is a quilter from Vegreville and sews beautiful items for your home. She uses top quality fabrics often from Chintz and Co. If you know Jackie Harris you probably have also heard of Brenda. They are sisters. Barb Howe is a very accomplished potter from Fort McMurray. Her pottery was previously sold through Prairie Peddler in Lloydminster. She is now beginning her 14th year as a full-time production potter, and loves every minute of it. Her primary goal in making pottery is to create functional pieces that are a pleasure to look at as well as to use. She has enjoyed the challenge of creating pieces that match in size and shape and are able to be used in sets. All her functional work is free of lead and barium and can be used in the oven, microwave and dishwasher. More recently, more decorative and sculptural pursuits have begun to develop and she is currently working at creating pieces for raku firing. As an avid gardener, plant forms and symbols are often a part of her work. In addition, her fascination for and love of vivid colours have caused her to develop glazes that demonstrate this passion. She loves to combine glazes for interesting effects. Barb’s work is represented at galleries and craft shops across Canada. Danielle Nichol was born and raised in the Lloydminster area and now residing north of the city with husband James and sons Morgan and Connor. She was influenced early on by Mom and Grandpa (both shutterbugs). That interest in family photos has grown into a passion to capture a moment. Primarily self taught, ongoing instruction from Ray Sproull, and involvement with the Mid West Canadian Artists group has helped to refine that passion. The majority of her recent work focuses on landscapes or pictures in nature. From vast mountain scenes to macro-photography of small items that are often overlooked. Recent interest has been for the study of figure and form. Graham Flatt is one of Canada’s top western watercolorists with sold out shows throughout Canada and the U.S. Fibre Arts on the Border is a group of fibre artists with a passion for working with natural fibres. They are spinners, weavers, rug makers, and knitters. They dye, felt, crochet and create with alpaca cashmere, wool, mohair, cotton, silk, bamboo, linen, angora, and llama. A large variety of hand made items from wall hangings and housewares to very fine garments and jewellery will be on display and for sale. There will be lots of samples to touch and feel, because when it comes to fibre arts, part of viewing is done with your fingers. Rebecca Macnab is a high school student from Turtleford who has become involved with Ubuntu, an Edmonton based group devoted to helping the widows of Rwanda market their crafts. She will have a tent selling wonderful crafts from Africa. You can find out more about Ubuntu at www.ubuntuedmonton.org 4
ART MARKET August 3 & 4 (Sunday & Monday) 11:00 am - 8:00 pm Outdoors at Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Centre 4515 44 Street
Vendors (continued): Dave Hiebert is an accomplished artist from Livelong who will be offering his work for sale. You can check out his work at www.davehiebert.com Oilfield Art Gallery owner Jackie Mohrbutter will be selling art from her Gallery. Mid West Canadian Artists is a large group of artists from this area who will pool their work in oil, acrylic and watercolours for the sale. Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre is hard at work producing aboriginal crafts for sale. Grace Allen is a self-taught nature artist who paints in both oil and acrylic. She will do commissions.
Entertainers: The Edmonton StiltWalkers Society (E.S.S.) are regular folks with daring personalities from 12 to 63 years old. Over the past 7 years the group has been invited to perform at a large number of varied events, including the St. Albert International Children’s Festival, The Edmonton International Street Performers Festival, The Edmonton International Fringe Festival, Sherwood Park Canada Day Celebrations, many Street Parades, and Non-Profit Associations’ Gala events. They have also traveled much of Alberta, as well as 2 national capitals; Ottawa and Washington DC. This summer the E.S.S. will be premiering its new stilt Pageant “Fire and Water – The Dragons Awaken” at the Royal Alberta Museum. The Edmonton StiltWalkers will be roving the Art Market on Monday, August 4, from Noon to 5:00 pm. Brian Howe has been playing his guitar for 30 years and will be strumming away during the Art Market.
Twink-elle the Clown has been performing throughout the province and the Lloydminster region for 10 years. Using simple magic, songs, and storytelling she reaches out to audiences of all ages engaging them with her love of literacy, creativity and physical activity. Twink-elle delights crowds with face painting and balloon sculpting, mostly quick and simple figures, to keep a group entertained and lines moving. Twink-elle has performed at fringe festivals, charity events, corporate picnics and parties, Christmas events, trade shows, birthdays, Canada Day celebrations, parades, and at libraries from Oxbow to La Loche. 5
LLOYD FOLK FEST August 4 (Monday) Performances start at 4:00 pm Weaver Park Outdoor Stage 4515 44 Street
Free Admission Bring a Beach Chair, Blanket, or Tarp
Cat Jahnke There have been many metaphors used by the media to describe Cat’s musical styling, such as “vocals as rich as triple chocolate mousse” or “a voice as crisp as a -30˚C January day on the prairies”. Her feisty stage presence is juxtaposed over her often very intimate lyrical content. Cat’s music is categorized as Folk Rock or Alternative Pop.
Samantha Schultz Samantha was the youngest nominee in the “Young Performer of the Year” category at the 2006 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Samantha’s talent in playing guitar is only surpassed by her ability to wrap her bright, soulful voice around an existing tune or showcase her own songs. Samantha writes her own lyrics and music, and has a range of subject matter far exceeding her young years. Most active in the local folk/blues/roots community, this versatile artist is working to find her niche; for now she has settled on the folk/blues/soul genres. She can rock you with her powerful vocals or move you to tears with a quiet ballad. She has a remarkable ability to connect with audience members of all ages, and steal the show. The sky is the limit for this up and coming artist!
The Timeless Hailing from small town Saskatchewan (Marcelin), Nic Brouwer is centrally poised to, essentially, “take over” the province with his music. Playing energetic, acoustic, folk-rock, Nic’s performances are tight, passionate and memorable. His professionalism and proficiency in his craft have garnered him respect among his peers and the industry is starting to take notice. One can’t help but think that it won’t be long until the name The Timeless is on the lips of everyone.
…and Many Local & Regional Artists will be performing as well 6

Free Admission Lead by international Watercolorist Graham Flatt, local and regional artists will have one hour to complete and frame a piece of art right before your eyes. The Quick Draw is a special opportunity for artists to be leaders in establishing an awareness of the creative process involved in making art. It provides a wonderful occasion for the public to gain insight into the area’s artists and the work that they produce. All too often the viewing public’s exposure to art is only through a gallery or static events. Rarely do they have an opportunity to engage the artists while they are creating. The Quick Draw event allows the public to get a much more personal understanding of the creative process.
Silent Auction & Wine Reception All artwork created in the Quick Draw will be auctioned off immediately via silent auction. The Quick Draw Silent Auction opens as the artists begin working and continues through the viewing and wine reception. All proceeds from the auction go to the Arts Without Borders Arts Bursary.

LLOYDMINSTER READS! August 8 (Friday) 7:30 pm Canadian Room Best Western Wayside Inn 5411 - 44 Street
Free Admission - Everyone Welcome Please join Saskatoon’s own Lois Simmie to discuss her book What I’m Trying to Say is Goodbye. The book features Matthew’s story as he struggles to redefine himself, his relationships, in fact, his whole life. Existence as a recovering alcoholic is far from simple. His wife is remarried, his daughter and grandson are caught up in extreme religious fundamentalism and he may have feelings for a tenant in the apartment block he manages. What I’m Trying to Say is Goodbye is one of Simmie’s funniest, serious books. With a little of everything (a ghost, a cult, an addict, a poisoning, an affair with a high ranking official and more), this book will captivate readers until the very end. Lois Simmie is the author of several works including They Shouldn’t Make You Promise That as well as Secret Lives of Sergeant John Wilson. She has been recognized with many literary honours including the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild Literary Award for Fiction and the Crime Writers of Canada’s Arthur Ellis Award. Simmie has also written several children’s books and was presented with the Saskatchewan Book Award for Children’s Literature. What I’m Trying to Say is Goodbye and much of Simmie’s other work is available at Lloydminster Public Library and Coles in the LloydMall. We invite you to join us for an evening of literary discussion, fine food, and international drink.

Feature Length Films: Now and Forever / directed by Bob Clark. 2002 (101 min.) Rated 14A Against a backdrop of clashing cultures, John Myron and Angela Wilson find each other and over the years form a powerful bond. One tragic night, John rescues Angela from a wicked act of betrayal. Faced with its aftermath, Angela flees town, unaware that she has put into motion a dramatic and intense string of events that will forever change the course of their lives. Harbouring a secret, John guides Angela to a shocking realization that will uncover the past.
Tideland / directed by Terry Gilliam. 2005 (122 min.) Rated 14A From the world’s most visionary contemporary filmmaker comes the unforgettable tale of one extraordinary little girl. Enter the magical world of Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland), an unusual child with an even more unusual story. Hers is a world where squirrels talk, where fireflies have names, and where the heads of dolls, long since separated from their bodies, are her closest friends.
Falling Angels / directed by Scott Smith. 2003 (109 min.) Rated 14A The wickedly funny story of three sisters’ coming of age in a wildly dysfunctional family, set against the backdrop of the 60s, free love, the Cold War, LSD and the dawn of feminism. Affectionately dubbed “Little Women on Acid”, this is a story about the destructive effects of secrecy and the bonds of duty between parents and their children.
Short Films:
How the Fiddle Flows / National Film Board of Canada. 2002 (48 min.) Follows Canada’s great rivers west along the fur-trading route of the early Europeans. The newcomers introduced the fiddle to the Aboriginal people they intermarried with along the way. A generation later, their mixed-blood offspring would blend European folk tunes with First Nations rhythms to create a rich and distinct musical tradition. Featuring soaring performances by some of Canada’s best-known fiddlers and step dancers and narrated by award-winning actor Tantoo Cardinal.
The Balgonie Birdman / National Film Board of Canada, 1991 (9 min.) A small prairie town has few secrets but in Balgonie, Saskatchewan, Bill Gibson had one. Each night, when most folks were home asleep, Bill was busy in his workshop. You see, Bill had a dream. He was building a flying machine. This charming puppet animation film tells his story. 19

Free Admission Standing Buffalo / National Film Board of Canada, 1968 (23 min.) An account of a rug-making cooperative organized by Sioux Indian women of the Standing Buffalo Reserve in the Qu’Appelle Valley of southern Saskatchewan. The Indians of this band are descended from a tribe that migrated from Minnesota during armed clashes a hundred years ago. The Sioux are noted for their distinctive, colourful designs. This film shows details of their handicraft.
I Don’t Have to Work That Big / National Film Board of Canada, 1973 (28 min.) Joe Fafard knows cows – the way they tuck in their forelegs to lie down and ruminate, the way a calf romps in the barnyard. He also knows people – all his friends and neighbours of the farming community of Pense, Saskatchewan. And he sculpts them all, in clay, in eloquent little miniatures. Joe’s work has been exhibited throughout western Canada as well as in Paris and New York. Here you see what he does.
First Stories, volume II / National Film Board of Canada. 2007 (34 min.) Features The Power of a Horse, Life Givers: Honouring Our Elders and Children, O Mother, Where Art Thou? and ati-wîcahsin (It’s Getting Easier), four new short films from four emerging Saskatchewan filmmakers - Tessa Desnomie, Cory Generoux, Jainine Windolph and Paul John Swiderski.
13 Seconds: The Kent State Shootings / Partners in Motion. 2007 (60 min.) Sixty-three shots in 13 seconds. Thirteen horrifying seconds in American history that resulted in the deaths of four students and the wounding of nine others. Some choose to forget. Others fight to keep the bitter lessons alive for new generations. Try as they may, the entire cast of survivors cannot escape the questions and the accusations that fly as each anniversary comes and goes. This Emmy Award-winning documentary tells the story of this pivotal event and the effects of participants and witnesses from both sides.
