PICTURE:

Eukarya Anamalia Chordata

Mammalia Primates Pongidae Pongo Pongo pygmaeus morio

Description of Species: However, since 1996, they have been divided into two species, Bornean Orangutan, and Sumatran Orangutan. The orangutans are also the only surviving species of the subfamily. Both extant species had their genomes sequenced and they appear to have diverged around 400,000 years ago. Identifying Characteristics: Males communicate by the "long call" for territorial and courting purposes. Orangutans’ arms are stronger and longer than their legs. Their reach from fingertip to fingertip can be as long as 8 feet. Adult males lead mostly solitary lives (except when consorting with females. They rarely descend from treetops to ground;; when they do, they usually walk on all fours (quadrupedal). Interesting Facts: Fruit makes up 65–90% of the orangutan diet. They rest during midday then travel in the late afternoon. Orangutans don’t swim. The main predators of orangutans are tigers. Their feet have four long toes and an opposable big toe. Their fingers and toes are curved, allowing them to get a better grip on branches.

Their total body length is 182- 217 cm (5.97- 7.12 ft). Its tubular snout, which ends in it’s tiny mouth and nostrils, takes up most of its head. It’s ears and eyes are relatively small. Next, a small hump can be found at the back of their necks. Also, their coat is mostly grey and white and there are 5 toes on each foot. They also have poor eyesight but it’s sense of smell is 40 times more sensitive than humans. Lastly, Anteaters are found in Central and South America. Identifying Characteristics: All anteaters have an elongated snout with a thin tongue that can be extended to a length greater than the length of the head. They have tube shaped mouths with lips but no teeth. They use their large, curved fore claws to tear open ant and termite mounds. While eating, they use their dense and long fur to defend them from attacks from the insects. Interesting Facts: An interesting fact about the giant anteaters is the adult males are slightly larger and more muscular than females, and have wider heads and necks. Next, With a body temperature reaching between 33 and 36 °C (91 and 97 °F), anteaters have the lowest body temperatures of any mammal. Also, anteater habitats include dry tropical forests, rainforests, grasslands, and savannas. Lastly, their long tongues can lap up 35,000 ants and termites that they swallow whole each day.

On both sides of their heads, they have bulging, round eyes that give them good, all-round vision from their tall height. Giraffes see in color and their senses of hearing and smell are also sharp. Despite their long neck and legs, the giraffe's body is relatively short. Identifying Characteristics: Giraffes have a long tongue that’s about 50 cm. It is purplish-black in color, to protect from sunburns, and is useful for grasping foliage, as well as grooming and cleaning their noses. They can also close their muscular nostrils to protect against sandstorms and ants. Their coat has dark blotches or patches separated by light hair. Male’s coats begin to get darker as they get older. Their coat serves as camouflage, allowing them to blend in the light and shade patterns of savanna woodlands. Each individual giraffe has a unique coat pattern. Interesting Facts: An interesting fact about them is a male giraffe can weigh as much as a pickup truck! That’s about 1400 kilograms. Also, drinking is one of the most dangerous times for a giraffe. While it is getting a drink it cannot keep a look out for predators and is vulnerable to attack. Lastly, a female giraffe gives birth while standing up. The calf drops approximately 6 feet to the ground, but it is not hurt from the fall.

COMMON NAME: Cape Sundew

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Drosera capensis

Domain: Kingdom: Phylum: Class: Order: Family: Genus: Species:

PICTURE:

Eukarya Plantae Angiosperms Eudicots Caryophyllales Droseraceae Drosera Drosera capensis

Description of Species: Drosera capensis, commonly known as the Cape sundew, is a small rosette-forming carnivorous species of perennial sundew native to the Cape in South Africa. Because of its size, easy to grow nature, and the copious amounts of seed it produces, it has become one of the most common sundews in cultivation. D. capensis produces strap-like leaves, up to 3.5 cm long (not including the petiole) and 0.5 cm wide,[2] which, as in all sundews, are covered in brightly coloured tentacles which secrete a sticky mucilage that traps arthropods. When insects are first trapped, the leaves roll lengthwise bythigmotropism toward the center. This aids digestion by bringing more digestive glands in contact with the prey. This movement is surprisingly fast, with completion in thirty minutes. The plant has a tendency to retain the dead leaves of previous seasons, and the main stem of the plant can become quite long and woody with time. Identifying Characteristics: Drosera capensis is a free-flowering, robust, carnivorous, evergreen perennial, of varying height, but usually around 150 mm. The short, woody stems are rhizomatous below with well-developed roots. The leaves radiate from the stem and are made up of a petiole and lamina, the petiole being almost the same length as the lamina. The lamina is flattened and bears knob-shaped tentacles, which are stalked, mucilaginous glands covering the leaf surface. Dense fringes of tentacles occur on the margins while fewer and shorter tentacles occur in the centre. The lower lamina surface is smooth and glabrous. Interesting Facts: ● Reproduces ● Eats insects

Interesting Facts: -Pitch pine is currently used mainly for rough construction, pulp, crating, and fuel. Pines are among the most commercially important of tree species, valued for their timber and wood pulp throughout the world. -Many pine species make attractive ornamental plantings for parks and larger gardens, with a variety of dwarf cultivars being suitable for smaller spaces. Pines are also commercially grown and harvested for Christmas trees. -Because pines have no insect or decay resistant qualities after logging, they are generally recommended for construction purposes as indoor use only (ex. indoor drywall framing).

Description of Species: Methane producing microbe found in oil wells, sewage lagoons, trash dumps, decaying leaves, stream sediments, and the stomach of cows, among other places. Identifying Characteristics: Produce methane Interesting Facts: the only archaea capable of forming multicellular colonies, and even show cellular differentiation produces methane - both a potential alternative energy source and a potent greenhouse gas.

COMMON NAME: Döderlein's bacillus

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Lactobacillus reuteri

Domain: Kingdom: Phylum: Class: Order: Family: Genus: Species:

PICTURE:

Archaea Bacteria Firmicutes Bacilli Lactobacillales Lactobacillaceae Lactobacillus Lactobacillus reuteri

Description of Species: Lactobacillus reuteri are Gram-positive, rod-shaped, and anaerobic. It naturally inhabits the gut of wide ranges of organisms, including humans, pigs, chickens and mice. L. reuteri produces reuterin, an antimicrobial that inhibits growth of harmful bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. L. reuteri is believed to be a promising therapy for the alleviation and reduction of certain illnesses related to gastrointestinal health, oral health, and urogenital health, including infantile colic, eczema, and H. pylori infection. Identifying Characteristics: It is now one of the most frequent bacterias in the world. Lactobacillus reuteri DPC16 is a probiotic bacterium that has strong antimicrobial activities on pathogens, mainly due to its ability to produce reuterin, an antimicrobial compound. Interesting Facts: As early as the turn of the 20th century, L. reuteri was recorded in scientific classifications of Lactic Acid Bacteria. Reuterin was found to inhibit the growth of some harmful Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Although L. reuteri occurs naturally in humans, it is not found in all individuals. L. reuteri may also be capable of promoting dental health
