A Sunset Burn Dylan Hall The burning coals glowing against the dead, brown grass. The orange sun seeping through the windows of the house The flames licking the grass creeping further and further. The smoke going with the wind. Blowing up and up trying to reach the sky that never ends. The tips of the burning grass look like little burning spikes. The warmth from the fires blows towards me warming me as I stand to the side

! After a while the fire dies down, The perfect shot. I snap the picture. I look at the screen of the camera. The warmth runs through me. Even though there is little warmth from the fire. I feel it radiating from the picture. The perfect picture of a sunset burn.

Numbers of Millions by Molly Horton

!

A number like an answer on a math question. A number no one really thought about. A number that meant a lot more than it was known for. A number that would always represent who you truly are. A number that stayed with you forever. A number that showed your past. A number that made you cringe when looked upon. A number cruel and dirty. A number that represents a wound that would always be there. A number that millions had. A number that mortified millions. A number that spread through millions. A number that classified you. A number that was replaced as your name. A number that convinced you, you were going to a better place. A number that tricked your mind. A number that would always haunt you. A number which followed you like a ghost. A number like a fire spread throughout the forest. A number keeping you from the world. A number killing you inside. A number that was there at the beginning and the end. A number that was stamped into your brain like a letter. A number that only you could understand. A number that described your experience. A number telling your story. A number like a book. A number made of blood and ash. A number like string slowly unweaving. A number symbolizing the Holocaust. This number that was like no other.

! I had a bleak childhood. My father was always in the Philippines. Mom and dad cared more about the bottle than me. Manilla, my maid, raped and molested me. The circus gave me solace, so I ran away. Electrician, aerospace engineer, construction worker. I was a juvenile delinquent, until I found books. I started to write. I read every day, sunrise to sunset. Whoosh, whoosh I raced in the Iditorod when I was 44. The outdoors have always spoken to me with their heavenly voice. I wrote some more. My books have won me 3 awards. My books, my outdoors, my life.

The Boy Named Hastin Emily Stinnford Hair and eyes a dark brown, And is always amazed by new things, Such as sad cooks and young elephants, Tricked by a man named Timir to join a “money making circus,” In circumstances like those of his sister’s illness he becomes quite caring, No matter what, there is love, family, and Nandita the elephant in his heart.

Away We Go! written from the perspective of Hastin Emily Stinnford

After my first try I was discouraged, But I knew I had to forge forward, “Can’t be!” I exclaimed, I had axed my way through, Dark was replaced by light, happy thoughts, Everything was so amazing away from the fence, Free feels so good, Gone were the yelling voices, but Nandita wasn’t with me either, Home was where I was meant to be, not some dirty circus.

Tintin and Captain Haddock Ben Rosenthal When Tintin and Captain Haddock thought all had been lost, They kept their ears and eyes open and spotted a plane, They flew to Sakharine and his men, To take back what was theirs. And after a fight involving two crane arms, And after Sakharine had been captured, They followed the scrolls. And once more a Haddock rightfully was at home in Marlinspike Hall, And they found the treasure-but only part of it. But these two men wanted more adventure, So naturally, they went on a voyage, To the middle of the sea, To find the rest.

The Different Sides of Marley Brooke Obar Although Marley is a great dog, he can be a handful sometimes. When you are home he is at your side and no mess to be found, but when you are gone you are just asking for a mess when you get back. The good parts about Marley are the best part about him. He is great with kids and adults, he is not afraid of many things. There are many bad parts about him, but, they all turn into good things.

Special Powers Poem by Anna Barry

!

I have watched her everyday up to this point when my powers saved her from this horrible fright, but this takes me back to a story quite long ago when darkness crossed shadows on children around. She was called the watcher just sat there so still as the beast kept her captive in a emotional cell. She was a bony child watching everyone walk by just with a notebook and pen writing everything down. She never smiles, laughs, or jokes around she just watches everybody on the same step in town. But one day I decided that this was it and I would save her from her misery right here and now. I went into the the forest of snake silver spot and talked to the wizard that founded the place. He said he could grant me

!30

one wish you see but it had to be the words of the wiser not dumb to be. I had to think quick no time to spare so I just spit out “ SEND CHILD ABUSE ON A PLANE ALREADY!” He waved his wand with a wick and a whip and a great burst of light, the whole world was spinning I felt it alright. I woke with a start and looked all around for my eyes almost popped when I saw what was there. The same girl who looked dead just before was laughing with other children not a frown in her soul. My deed was done the sun was bright but as I was going back home I gasped at the site. Just above going to the right a plane was labeled “Child abuse plane, going away.” now we can live in light

Freedom in an Open Field, Freedom in an Empty Paper

!

Andrew Lawrence and Isabelle Boisvert

Sprinting down the field, the grass under my cleats, scanning for an open teammate, the wind whispering through the vents in the side of my helmet.

!

I run my pencil across the clean white paper. All the gears in my brain turning. Trying to recreate a memory. Finally, the drawing speaks to me. With my pencil in my hand and the paper on the desk, I give my drawing life. Freedom in a open field, freedom in an empty paper

!

Not worrying about anything, except what I was doing, I felt free to leave everything out on the field, seeing the open path in front of me.

!

! ! ! ! ! ! ! !34

On the paper each pencil line adds up. Mistakes are just teachers showing me the way. In the end I am smarter. Practicing is key.

Freedom in an open field, freedom in an empty paper

!

Seeing the open lane to the goal, processing in my head what I should do, sensing all the defenders rushing to help, all eyes on me.

!

!

Finally adding color, it all comes together. paintbrush over pencil with brilliant blues and greens. My memory is almost complete. My goal is almost reached.

Freedom in a open field, freedom in an empty paper

The Freedom of Playing the Game Nicholas Senasy and Kyla Moroney

!

!

Suddenly my mind goes blank. I swing hard. Did I hear the ball hit the glove or the crack of the bat? I dash down the court the ball bounces touching my hand my heart beating fast, my lungs burning But my heart keeps telling me to push on. It’s the freedom I get for the love of baseball. for the love of basketball.

!

The ball goes flying, this is my chance! I sprint to first base, but almost trip. The base is calling to me. I just barely made it. I get low shuffling back and forth watching the ball in the opponents’ hands they dribble as I block their every move. It’s the freedom I get for the love of baseball. for the love of basketball.

!

My teammate was up to bat. I saw the steal sign. It was a risk, but I had to take it. Did I make contact?

!

!36

The pitcher let go of the ball and I took off flying, kicking up dirt behind me. The catcher whips the ball to second, the ball goes flying, but playing it safe, I stick at second.

!

I sprint down the court I turn my eyes locked on the ball Suddenly the ball is in my hands I stare at the hoop and shoot Swish! The crowd cheers I smile. It’s the freedom we get playing the game

I Can Do This, I Am Free By: Emily Stinnford & Logan Bagshaw Pointe shoes in hand. Bright lights blaring on me. I am here to prove that this is not an easy sport. My heart is strong, and it wants to win!

I walk onto the court, players trying to trash talk thinking it can get to me but it will not work

Being me, taking pressure, accomplishing fear. Freedom is being strong.

Freedom is being confident.

Focused, complete. I go into my mode, a different person. I am on the stage, and all I can think is, “spot this turn!”

With the ball I change instantly to my other self worried and focused on each

Potassium Jared Merrifield It was the year 1807 and Sir Humphrey Davy was experimenting with

potash and electricity and discovered a new element called potassium. He needed more and sent a miner into the caves to get more potash. While collecting it, there was a cave-in and the miner was surrounded by potash. The potassium in the potash then transformed his molecules and changed him into potassium man. Overtime he started to change, his skin became silver and when he took showers he started to get very warm. Eventually scientists discovered the important use of potassium as a fertiliser and started mining for more potash. This infuriated potassium man and he wanted to keep people from getting the potassium and possibly becoming like him. He started chasing miners from the cave and out into the rain. When he left the cave he started to catch on fire. When some of the other miners saw him they called him Aquaflame. They named him this because he was on fire even though it was raining. The next thing they saw astonished them. The fire turned purple. The scientist that saw this knew the purple flame was a property of potassium. When Aquaflame saw the onlookers he lashed out looking for the lead scientist. In doing this a part of him was cut off. When he could not find the scientist he left the site to find more evil things to do with his powers. In later analysis the scientist found that he was very reactive and electropositive which means he had a positive charge. This discovery lead scientists to conclude that Aquaflame was made out of the element potassium, a silvery metal. That is why he is silvery. In many attacks with Aquaflame, the scientists found that he had one weakness. If he lost parts of him he would reform but get smaller. He would need to get more potassium to get bigger again. The only way to cut off parts of him is to get close, but before you can do this you have to get past his fire. He lights himself on fire with a water tank that he wears.

!42

This can cause some serious problems for many of the police that constantly fight him. Aquaflame would be a great villain in the next Avengers movie. Many great villains have a reason to be bad. So does Aquaflame. He wants revenge on scientists because they are the reason he turned into a man of potassium. In many movies the villains need powers that the superheros have a tough time beating. If Thor tried to strike him down with lightning he is already electrified so the lightning would not affect him. As he collected more potassium, he could turn into a great giant that could not be quickly destroyed. This would be a harder challenge than any villain before him. This is why Aquaflame should be the a supervillain in the next Marvel Avengers movie.

Quicksilver Joshua Herreid

!

My villain is named Quicksilver. Quicksilver is based on the element mercury. Mercury is a silvery liquid metal at room temperature. Mercury is conductive to electricity and heat. It also will never biodegrade. Mercury is used in barometers, manometers, some electrical switches, liquid electrodes, batteries, and recovery of gold from ores. It is no longer used in thermometers and paint because it is toxic, a very useful trait in the villain industry. Enough about the element, let’s focus on the villain. Quicksilver was born 3,500 or more years ago. His exact birth date is not known. However, how he was created is known. More than 3,500 years ago, in an ancient Chinese tribe lived a boy named Mao. Mao died from a disease early in life. Mao’s body was put into coffin a filled with mercury. Then the coffin was put into a tomb deep underground. The earth's thermal energy enveloped the coffin, causing change to occur. The coffin was left un-excavated for thousands of years. Until, one day, a group of stupid archaeologists broke open the coffin and freed quicksilver. Mao’s body was gone, living mercury was left. Mao was quite vengeful after being in the coffin so long. So Mao took the name Quicksilver and left to wreak vengeance on the world. Quicksilver does not have a definite shape. He just takes the shape that would be most useful in the events that are happening. Since quicksilver is made of the element mercury, there are many abilities he has. The first and foremost is that he is a liquid so he can take any shape he chooses. He is also poisonous and superdense. He could cover his enemies, poisoning and suffocating them. One of the lesser abilities is that Quicksilver can corrode aluminum and dissolve gold. Not that tanks use aluminum bullets. He will never biodegrade too.

!44

Quicksilver can ooze into the ground to escape or hide. With all his powers, Quicksilver has weaknesses too. Mercury freezes at -38 degrees celsius. Quicksilver can’t move when he’s frozen. Mercury dissolves in nitric acid, that is a more permanent solution. One lesser known solution is ionic liquids. Ionic liquids can bond with mercury

! Quicksilver is perfect for a role in the Avenger movie. He would make that perfect villain that the heroes will be challenged with. He is plenty strong. He is very hard to destroy, so he can stand up to the avengers. But he won’t be insanely strong. There has been a long history of unbelievably powerful villains in the Marvel history. The god Loki, Galactus, Darkseid, Apocalypse, Antimonitor, the one above all, the list goes on and on. These villains are too powerful.People have forgotten about those old villains. These villains make the battle one big power struggle. Not with Quicksilver, he would make the fight grand but within human comprehension. If a villain destroys a galaxy, it is just too big to fit in the viewer’s mind. But if a city or town were to be destroyed it gets to the viewer. It leaves a bigger impact. Also, these villains have gotten too old. Every aspect of these old villains have been exploited. There is nothing you could do to show a new side of Loki. People already know all about him. But what about a new villain? A fresh slate? You could create a personality that would be the new super villain. Quicksilver looks newer and is a better image for a blockbuster. Quicksilver would be perfect for the new Avengers movie.

!

Laqueesha Lead Lauren Gervais Laqueesha Lead, an 18 year old girl from Ireland, was not always bad. She grew

up as a normal child swinging on the small swing set outside of her house, her fiery red hair blowing in the wind behind her without a care in the world. When Laqueesha turned 18 she said goodbye to her family and friends and got on a plane headed to the United States. Laqueesha grew up in a small town, always protected by her parents’ safe embrace, never exposed to the true hatred in the world. Laqueesha left the airport into the busy streets of New York City, and there she saw a fight break off in an alley. Wanting to help, she ran in between the two guys, not understanding how violent it could get. One of the men drew a gun and shot her in the stomach. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and the bullet was removed. It was a miracle she survived seeing as it was a lead bullet which is poisonous. However, a small fraction still remained inside her giving her the power to shoot lead bullets with her hands. After that night in the alley, something in Laqueesha changed. She no longer had the warm caring heart of the young girl that left Ireland, but now a despicable heart that is fueled by the hatred that surrounds her. Laqueesha Lead is a cold hearted villain.

! Lead is a highly malleable and ductile metal. It is a cumulative poison that is also a poor conductor of electricity. Lead is used in some types of fishing weights, wicks of candles, paints, pencils, and bullets. Lead is a basic metal whose number on the periodic table is 82 and the atomic symbol is Pb. After being shot and having all but a small segment of the lead bullet taken out of her, Laqueesha has developed major powers. Since the magical day when Laqueesha survived being shot with a poisonous bullet she has become immune to aging. Strengths that Laqueesha has developed is she can flatten herself or stretch herself into a thin wire to hide and protect herself more easily. Also, she has developed the power to shoot lead bullets similar to the way Spiderman shoots webs. One weakness is that Laqueesha has become very soft. After she was shot, Laqueesha

!46

developed many powers related to the properties of lead. Laqueesha choose to use her powers for evil, killing anyone that crosses her path. She has piercing green eyes that can make even the most innocent people question themselves when they make eye contact. Her fiery red hair is braided down her back, never a hair out of place. No one dares touching her, in fear that her poisonous touch would instantly destroy them. Her gray and blue suit never taking a day off, the silvery gray and playful blue represents that color of the lead bullet that fuels the hatred inside her. On her uniform there is a small gray patch placed on the right side of her stomach to symbolize where she was shot, and why she needs to continue the life she has developed for herself as a villain.

! Laqueesha Lead would make a great contribution to the Avengers Movie. I say this knowing that there is a lot of competition for the role. The tragic backstory and unique powers are what make Laqueesha remarkable. No superhero or villain ever created has had the ability to shoot lead bullets and instantly kill someone. Laqueesha possess qualities and abilities similar to those of the element lead that can not be duplicated or shown through any other character. Overall, Laqueesha Lead would be an interesting and unique addition to the Avengers movie because of her individuality and distinctive traits. Laqueesha’s powers are taken from the properties of lead, making her a villain like no other.

Fat Man Henry Kledaras

!

My character, “Fat Man,” is named after the nuclear bomb that landed in Nagasaki Japan. The bomb was made with plutonium. Plutonium is a very radioactive element. Fat man’s real name is Satou. Satou was 10 years old when the bomb hit his home city. Instead of dying, Satou overcame the radiation. The plutonium covered his body, and his skin turned into a sheet of plutonium. For the rest of his life he had to be alone, in solitary confinement. He was misunderstood as a villain. For 5 generations the story of young Satou’s evil was told to all the young children of Japan. After almost 68 years of solitary confinement, he was VERY angry.

!

Thinking he was an old man, he didn’t know what he was capable of. The silvery sheet of plutonium was tarnishing and turning into yellow. Satou had not seen himself for 68 years. He didn’t know that his skin wasn’t wrinkling or aging. Soon after, he realized he needed to get out of prison. When the guards gave him food, he took their gas masks off and they died of radiation. After getting out of prison he wanted to research the properties of plutonium. He found his weaknesses and his strengths. His weakness was that he would be boiled to death at 3,232 Cº. His strength was he could kill someone by making them breathe his toxic fumes. He could also act like a nuclear weapon and self destruct. He also found on the internet that he can be salvaged and made into a fuel rod for a space ships, nuclear power plants, and can be made into a nuclear weapon.

!

I think my character should be in the Avengers because he is a threat and he is harmful to life. I think he is worthy to be an upcoming Avenger because he is a walking bomb! He also would be a good bad guy because he got crazy in solitary confinement.

Sulphur

!

Abbie Osgood

The element Sulfur is a very powerful element. I believe that it would make a very effective villain. Sulphur is a potentially dangerous element that is used to make fertilizers, the vulcanization of rubber, fungicide, fumigant, bleach, paper and gunpowder. The vulcanization of rubber is when it is treated with extremely hot sulphur in order to make it more elastic. These are all made from sulphur in its solid form, usually crushed into a powder. Sulphur is pale, yellow, brittle in solid form. It is red and soupy in liquid form. Sulphur can combine with any other element besides gas, gold, and platinum. Sulfur appears in a number of different allotropic forms: rhombic, monoclinic, polymeric, and others. The Atomic Number of Sulphur is 16, Atomic Mass is 32.06. Sulphur is also very dangerous, which is why it would make a perfect villain. My villain has the powers of sulphur: My character can cause respiratory problems such as loss of sense of smell and respiratory paralysis (the latter results in death.) My villain has the powers of sulfur, but it was not always that way. Once upon a time, she was a young girl living on the Hawaiian coast. Her name was *Ikaika, which means strong and powerful. She spent her free time like any other island girl, enjoying tropical fruits, exploring her island, playing with other children. Ikaika was a very lucky girl. She was born into a loving, fortunate family in beautiful Hawaii. She did very well in school and had a great personality. She was the picture of beauty and she was the girl that everybody loved. Despite her name, she was shy and kind. As she grew older, the jealousy of other islanders rose. At one point, a group of girls decided to do something about their jealousy. “She needs to be taught a lesson, growled one girl. They quickly devised a plan to scare Ikaika. On a beautiful sunny day,

!50

Ikaika was walking home when the girls stepped in front of her. “Oh Ikaika! would you please come with us?” said one girl sweetly. “We are on our way to see Hualalai (a hawaiian volcano) .” Unable to refuse, Ikaika smiled and accepted. The girls held back giggles as they led Ikaika down a sandy path. When they arrived, the girls lost their sweet facade. “Well, go!” said the girl, and pushed her to the edge. “I-I don’t understand,” stammered Ikaika. The girls just stepped closer, forcing Ikaika closer to the edge. She looked down at the swirling lava as the girls cackled. All of the sudden, the dry earth under her broke, and she plummeted down into the lava, screaming. Frightened, the girls stepped back. “What have we done? We killed her!” shrieked a girl, watching blue flames rise from the volcano. They fled, but not before swearing secrecy. The next day, the girls died. Nobody knew what went on, and there was panic. Ikaika ‘s parents grieved at the loss of their beloved daughter. Only Ikaika knew what happened that day. From that day on, her pure heart was evil and she had the destructive powers of sulfur. I think my character should be included in the next Avengers movie because she has a much different story from some other villains. She started out as a fortunate, kind young girl and was turned into a monster because of jealousy. I think this also has a nice lesson attached to it. Aside from that, she has amazing super powers and also weaknesses, and it is good to have both. Overall, I think my character is a balanced villain and would be a great addition to the next Avengers movie. As for her looks,my character’s costume is pale yellow like the element sulfur in its solid form. Part of her hair is blue like the flame that burns on sulphur. Her lips are red because sulphur turns into a red liquid when melted. As for the rest, she still has her original looks and black hair. Her looks make her easily identifiable as the element sulphur.

My element is Neon. My melting point is - 248.67 degrees Celsius. My boiling point is -246.048 degrees Celsius. Once upon a time in Sunny Oaks, there was a kid named Buzz Brightyear. He was about 10 years old. One day he was walking home from school. There was this strange person he had never seen before. Soon, the man disappeared out of his sight. He wasn’t worried. But then he felt pain in his arm. He realized that he was shot. He looked back to see who had shot him, and there, behind a box was the strange man with a gun. The last thing he saw before he blacked out was the man running away and someone else running toward him. When he awoke, he realized that he wasn’t on the street. He was in the hospital. The doctor came over and asked, “Are you ok? You took quite a shot yesterday!” “Ya, I’m ok, but I feel a little bit of pain run up my arm now and then …” He replied. “Yes, that is normal… You are lucky that the bullet missed the vein in your arm.” About a month later, he felt worse pain. He went back to the doctor to have it checked. The doctor told them that there was this weird thing in his arm. The doctor asked if they could test it for cancer. After the test came back, the doctor found out that it was not cancer. Buzz didn’t know what to do about it. He went on with life like he normally would. One day he was getting something to eat. He then went out to his room and he opened the door, but then he realized that he ripped the door off. He didn’t know what happened. He went to put the door back on and went downstairs. He went through another door. He ripped that one off too… He wondered “Is the thing in my arm the ability of super strength?” He tried to see if he could do anything else. He realized that he can be invisible too. He was very glad that he had found the importance in his life. He knew of some other powers but the last power he realized he had was the neon power. This power could turn anything dull to bright colors so that everybody

!54

could see it better. He knew that he was very lucky to have these powers. Buzz knew that he wanted to become a superhero and save the world. He went to the town office and applied for the job. The man said, “Ok! You are officially a superhero. Buzz was so grateful and whenever he was at his house he was waiting for someone to be in trouble so he could rescue them. About a month later he finally got a call that the signs on the highway had shut down and they needed someone to fix them. Right away he knew that he could add color to them with his neon color. He rushed down to the highway and looked for the signs. My character should be included in the next Avengers movie because he has a power that no other superhero has. He can make things very bright. He can turn anything dull to something very bright. This comes in handy because if a sign on the highway or some other thing shuts down, he could fix it.

My cloth is either hard or soft It is hard to stay focused after taking in the ancient script Others find no value in the creative story The grounds show no truth, but the few trees can explain it all As the white trees written with value, are slowly thought off God has talked through these mysteries, and now are slowly becoming extinct The ancient scripts are the size of your hand, some are the size of a man two thoughts do not see the same thing while experiencing the power of the map I am more than a map, but smaller than the paths within it

I can see you staring at me Your eyes, your hair, your teeth My glassy surface encases you Lining you with the reality of yourself Your twin, your follower, yet we have not met You smile and I see no more A blank wall staring back at me Emotionless, boring, dull I know you will return and I shall wait!

9/11 Abby Washo

! They say they can’t explain It’s too hard That they were aghast Worried, and so were the others Would it happen again? How many more times? They say you couldn’t be selfish Everyone was worried about everyone For once, the whole country caring In agreement Some say we need to stay consolidated Others can’t even understand the concept But if this is what it takes for us to come together... It’s not worth it.

9/11 The Flight that Fought Back Bill Murphy

!

It makes me cry just to think of them. Hopeless in the sky. Sitting, helpless. Suddenly the thought to fight back. So brave to try. Fighting a winless battle. A fight just to die. Fighting a crusade with no hope of endurance. War cries, then extinction. Just a burning pile of the flight that fought back.

! On this horrible day made of many large things. ! One little thing saved my life.! My son.! When all of my colleagues and friends died I was spared.! He was five at the time.! Just going into kindergarten. ! We picked up a friend and his child.! His name was Tristan.! The minute we stepped in the room we saw the teacher crying.! She looked at us and pointed to the small tv that was in the corner. ! It seemed like there was nothing in the world except the small tv.! Depicting the older sibling sliding into the darkest recesses of its former glory. ! Then almost in slow motion the second plane soared almost cynically towards the young sibling.! My friends and colleagues.! I wonder how they felt when they saw the plane barreling towards them.! It was the littlest of things that saved my life.! And the largest of things that ended theirs. !

!

A wave of ash and smoke. A wave of wails. A wave of people, of faces. A tide that will never ebb.

! After the first plane, the first tower people just gazed. It was an accident. After the second plane, the second tower, the wave began. It was an attack.

! The crew went to the top of our building and gaped, In a time lapse the towers fell and the smoke rose Our tears rolled down and the sky turned grey.

! We did not know the sky would be grey for months, We did not know how many friends, family members, strangers died, but our hearts went out to them, we grieved for them. We did not know that two more planes were heading south.

9/11 Poem Trevor Rafford

!

Terror comes like crashing waves. Sweeping lives away from life. Panic thunders and fills all hearts. While loved ones wait and weep For their own lost souls. Lives like birds flitter away. While some lives fly about to fall. In the end they will end it all. We scream like wind on a forgotten shore. A haunting image burns the mind. The glass, the smoke, the burning flame. We will never forget. Infidel Dogs Will Bite Back. Never Forget.

9/11! Kallee Gallant!

! The billowing clouds of smoke that escape the tower intertwine themselves with the clouds of the once blue sky. ! I watch as the grey and blue engage in a duel, sizing each other up.! As the grey begins to conquer and envelope the blue, the clouds fade away as though they were never anything but ghosts of a once indifferent day.! The still blue sky and the sounds of New York disappear behind the rippling curtain of smoke. ! Nothing more than a moment.! Nothing more than a day.! Yet we find ourselves trapped.! Trapped by the burden of that day.! The day that is forever inscribed on the face of our nation.

Unplugged! Wren Payne!

“Wren! Hurry up!” Anna called to me from the dock. ! “Coming!” I responded. I bounded down the metal ramp and landed on the wooden platform with a thump. It was our first night at Cow Island, and I was going to try to make the best of it. The fact that we couldn’t bring anything electronic bothered me; at the time I thought I wouldn’t be able to survive without my phone. It was still a little odd getting used to the whole nature aspect of things. “So far things have been okay, though,” I thought. ! “Alright guys, we’re gonna have quiet time for five minutes,” our group guide Scotty whispered. “And remember: no talking.” I rolled my eyes playfully and Anna giggled. We walked over to a corner of the dock, where we had a perfect view of the Portland Harbor. We lay down and started trying to pass the time. I propped myself up on my elbows and peered ahead; in the distance I could see the tiny cars zooming by on the highway. “I wonder what my family’s doing,” I thought to myself. Dad was probably watching the latest football or baseball game, Mom was probably on the computer or cooking dinner, and my sister was most likely playing on her iPod or watching Netflix. I sighed silently. I missed the comforts of One Direction, Candy Crush, and Pretty Little Liars. ! I had to admit though, it was pretty nice out here despite my stubbornness. I glanced over at Anna, who was resting with her eyes closed, hands floating in the cold and glassy water. I copied her and closed my eyes too, listening carefully to the distant sound of motorboats slicing through the ocean, the water gracefully crashing onto the shore. “My phone is nothing compared to this,” I couldn’t help but think. I could hear some kind of bird calling in the distance, maybe an egret or a loon. The air was humid and warm, but there was a bit of a sea breeze. The activities we had done earlier flashed through my mind: Rock climbing. Zip lining. Hiking. I opened my eyes and turned around onto my back, so that I could see the sky. I tried to be as quiet as I could; I didn’t want to disturb my classmates. I looked upand saw one of the most amazing sights I’ve ever seen in my whole entire life. There was a perfect full moon, and stars that lit up the night sky. I could just see the sunset out of the corner of my eye: pink, orange, red, blue,

!74

purple, yellow, and almost every other color I could think of. This might seem cheesy, but it was one of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Scotty.! “Alright guys! Time’s up! I hope you all had time to reflect on your day, but for now it’s time go back to the tents and get some sleep!” We all groaned, partly from the fact that we had only had a short time to enjoy the sunset (which was now over) but also because we knew how much hard work and challenges the next day had in store for us. As we discreetly headed back toward our campsite and got settled in, I had completely forgotten about my phone. I already had what I needed: a roof over my head, great friends, and nature. I realized that I didn’t need to be connected to the Internet world to have fun. Sometimes I just needed to unplug, sit back, and enjoy life in its purest form.!

The early morning dew still camouflaged the field that I would be playing on in just about an hour. Once off the bus and onto the freshly cut grass on the sideline I threw my pads on. I wished these would have guarded me through the whole game. The team and I went on on our half of the field and began stretching. My muscles felt like a stale loaf of bread. The fact that this was our first real game of the year made my stomach feel like it was about was explode with nervousness. Once the clock hit 9:30 and the stripes were prepared, I and the other captain, Nick, pranced onto the field. We met the other leaders of the team, shaking their hands. Luckily we won the toss so we able to play defense first. The first play of the game I could hear my coach howling from the sidelines trying to pump us up. I sat there as a linebacker watching the play develop before my eyes. The quarterback pitched the ball to the left side, and I stabbed the spikes of my cleats into the grass beneath me. I hit him and we both went down, except he was able to get up after it but I wasn’t. I laid there on the ground in agonising pain. !
