Moon phases and orbit of the Moon The Moon is orbiting the Earth, the Earth is constantly moving because it is orbiting the sun. The Moon therefore travels slightly more than 360째 to get from one new moon to the next. Thus the lunar month is longer. The moon moves toward the east in our sky by about 12 degrees each day. The moon rises in the east and sets in the west! The Moon takes about 27 days (27 days, 7 hours, 43 minutes, 11.6 seconds) to go all the way around the Earth and return to its starting position. The moon orbits Earth at an average speed of 2,288 miles per hour. The phases of the moon work in a cycle starting with the new moon. A complete cycle of the Moon's phases from new Moon to full Moon takes twenty-nine and a half days. The lunar phase is when the sun lights up the amount of the Moon you can see from Earth depending on how much of it. This amount changes each day. The moon is illuminated because it reflects the light from the sun. The part of the moon facing the sun is lit up. The part facing away from the sun is in darkness.


HOW THE MOON WAS FORMED AND THE SIZE OF THE MOON Out of the 173 natural satellites in our solar system, the Moon, estimated to be 4.5 billion years old, is the fifth largest in size. The Moon's surface area is less than one tenth of the total surface a real of the Earth The distance between Earth and the Moon is 384,403 km which is about 30 times the Earth's diameter. Light takes about 1.28 seconds to cross this distance. The diameter of the Moon is 3,474 km, which is about quarter of the Earth's radius According to this theory; the Moon was created from the debris ejected by an impact of a huge object (of the size of today's Mars) on our planet, about 4.53 billion years ago, when a molten Earth was still cooling down.


Composition of the moon/ efffects on earth from the moon The surface of the moon has many things on it such as craters, lava plains, mountains, and valleys. Scientists believe the craters were formed around 3.5 to 4.5 billion years ago by meteors hitting the moon's surface. There are light areas and dark areas. The dark areas are called seas, but they do not contain water. The seas are flat regions, whereas the light areas are rugged and are higher on average. For this reason, they are also called highlands. The Moon affects the liquid envelope of the Earth, and the oceanic tides in particular. The Moon affects the ocean tides more in some areas than others. For instance, in the channel between the British Isles and the European continent, the tidal range can be 10 meters, compared to what you see in the Pacific, where it is below a meter. 

The crust of the Earth is also affected. The Moon’s tidal forcing causes significant heating and dissipation of energy to take place. Part of this energy is heating the Earth, and forcing the Moon to recede from the Earth over time dissipates part of it. There are people who propose that the tidal effect of the Moon may have helped trigger the convection on the Earth that led to the multi-plate tectonics. The other planets don’t have the same tectonic cycle. For most of them, the crust is like a lid that doesn’t move much horizontally, and this lid on the surface blocks the magma and heat. The Earth instead has rolling convective motion that drags the crust, and then the crust plunges back down into the mantle and gets recycled.
