Formation and Creation of the Moon The moon was created a long time ago, many people have theories about how the moon was created but the most accepted and widely known is the Giant Impact Theory. In this theory, the Earth had no moon until it was struck by a rogue planet which instantly vaporized. The moon is

believed to have been originally a part of Earth’s crust, whacked out by a collision between the Earth and another body bearing the size of Mars. Although this is a widely known theory many people have others that may be true.

4

As Big as the Moon The M oon gigant ic and has a diamet er of 3 ,4 7 4 k ilomet ers, t he Eart h is 1 2 ,7 4 2 k ilomet ers across. That means t hat t he moon is roughly Âź of t he size of t he Eart h. The

moon is far away t oo at 2 5 2 ,0 8 8 miles away from t he Eart h.

5

Phases of the Moon The moon has eight different phases a New Moon, Waxing Crescent moon, First Quarter Moon, a Waxing Gibbous Moon, a Full Moon, a Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter Moon, and a Waning Crescent Moon. A crescent moon can be waxing or waning which means that it is on either side of the moon and is cover mostly because of a shadow on the moon and it appears

to human eyes as it is only a sliver. The shadow also effects all of the other moon phases, except the full moon. At a full moon there is no shadow visible to human eyes, and it is in a full looking circular shape.

7

Orbits of the Moon The Earth orbits around the sun in an elliptical orbit, the moon does the same around the Earth. Looking down from the north pole the Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction on an imaginary line called its axis once every day. This accounts for the fact that the sun rises on the east and sets in the west. The

Earth’s axis is tilted and that makes it where the moon can make an elliptical pattern around the Earth.

9

Effects on the Moon Many things that can effect the Earth can also effect the moon. Many People say if we run out of space we could live on the moon, but in reality it would be every difficult to do. The fact that you couldn’t breathe without an oxygen tank would be a first problem. Another problem is that the resources on Earth don’t exist on the moon. The lifestyle

we have would not be available on the moon. People could damage the surface of the moon and it could go into the space and fall on to earth, damaging a part of earth.
