GNBS URGES REGULAR VERIFICATION OF TANKER WAGONS TO ENSURE CONFORMANCE

The safety, accuracy and reliability of tanker wagons are crucial for transporting bulk fuel from terminals to gas stations and other customers countrywide To guarantee accurate measurements in trade, it is imperative that all tanker wagons be verified by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) in accordance with the 1981 Weights and Measures Act

Verification is done initially when the vehicles are imported into Guyana and subsequently on a yearly basis to facilitate the renewal of licenses by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) In the first half of 2024, the GNBS successfully verified a total of 126 tanker wagons and has commenced verification for the second half of the

GNBS CLINCHES VICTORY AT PUBLIC SERVICE DOMINO COMPETITION

All work and no play could make the GNBS a dull place!. Over the years, the game of domino has become the trending recreational activity after work hours, and it has led to our teams participating in many competitions.

On July 28, the GNBS team participated in the Public Service domino tournament at the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) Hall and emerged winners! In a thrilling final, GNBS won 46 games, surpassing both GWI (43 games) and GGMC (34 games)

The GNBS team earned a monetary incentive and the Sports Ambassador trophy while the teams that placed second and third also received monetary rewards.

Using acrylic and watercolour paint, the paintings depicted sceneries, objects and other representations of Emancipation celebrations in Guyana

In observance of this year’s Emancipation Day, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce (MINTIC) hosted a painting competition.

The GNBS copped first and second place in the three-hour competition hosted at the Ministry’s Boardroom Permanent Secretary, Sharon Roopchand-Edwards attended the event and spoke highly of the participants' energy and the creativity in their work

GNBS PARTICIPATES IN HIGHLY ANTICIPATED

INTERNATIONAL BUILDING EXPO 2024

The International Building Expo 2024 was held during August 08 to August 11, at the Guyana National Stadium under the theme “Building on the foundation of sustainability and unity ”

This event brought together various stakeholders in the construction industry and provided an opportunity for the GNBS to showcase its calibration, testing, training and certification services along with standards available for this growing sector

The GNBS was thrilled to participate in this year’s expo where our team interacted with a wide range of stakeholders

STAKEHOLDERS ENGAGED ON STANDARD FOR ICE-CREAM & BREAD AND ROLLS

In August, the GNBS hosted three Public Consultation Sessions as its Standardisation Team works to revise several standards The first session was held on August 06 for the Milk Standard and the second on August 15 for the IceCream and other related products standard On August 21, the third session was held for the Bread and Rolls Standard

These sessions were hosted to discuss the revision of the standards with stakeholders to garner their comments and inputs in keeping with the standard development process.

GNBS ENSURES PROPER LABELLING OF FOOTWEAR

AS BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING CONTINUES

During the July- August vacation, the GNBS utilised the various media platforms to educate businesses and consumers about the quality and labelling of footwear, garments, cell phones and other electronic appliances

These commodities form part of the 17 categories of products monitored by the GNBS to ensure quality on the local market

As the new school term begins, consumers are encouraged to only purchase these items from registered manufacturers and importers, and look for key labelling requirements when making purchases

Some of these labelling requirements to keep in mind includes the country of origin, manufacturers name/brand, care instructions, and any special features required for the product’s intended purpose.

The GNBS leveraged funding from the programme, specifically through its Technical Barriers to Trade component to improve standards and quality measures throughout Guyana, supporting various sectors and groups including micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, women entrepreneurs and vulnerable groups Further, through the GNBS, the plan has enabled key investments in Guyana to improve infrastructure and standards

The 11th EDF EPA Programme ran from September 2019 to August 2024 with funding from the European Development Fund

GNBS PARTICIPATES IN MASSIVE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP EXERCISE

The GNBS Team joined forces with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, which includes its sister agencies the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), the Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC), and the Small Business Bureau to participate in a massive clean-up campaign in August.

This initiative is part of a broader National Environmental Clean-Up Exercise launched by President Dr. Irfaan Ali and it reflected a commitment to environmental sustainability and community responsibility

The collaboration aimed to not only beautify the environment but also raise awareness about the importance of maintaining clean and healthy surroundings By engaging in such activities, the GNBS and and other agencies are setting a positive example for others to follow, reinforcing the message that environmental care is a shared responsibility

The GNBS took a strategic step to enhance international cooperation during a brief visit to the Indian High Commission Executive Director, Trevor Bassoo, along with Deputy Executive Director, Ramrattie Karan and Head of Marketing, Syeid Ibrahim, engaged in fruitful discussions with High Commissioner Dr Amit S Telang

The meeting focused on exploring partnerships with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in key areas such as standardization, metrology, and certification The GNBS team discussed potential collaborations that could lead to joint training programmes, knowledge exchange, and shared best practices

This initiative aligns with the GNBS's commitment to advancing Guyana’s quality infrastructure, ultimately boosting the country's economic growth and global trade competitiveness

Additionally, the meeting underscores the GNBS's dedication to forging strong international partnerships, positioning Guyana to meet and exceed global standards in various sectors
