GWA’SALA-‘NAKWAXDA’XW BIG HOUSE UPDATE
On June 15, 2018 a Bighouse Committee Meeting took place with a delicious lunch catered by the GN Elders in the GN Elders Centre. Just over 44 folks were in attendance and the meeting focused on a review of the March 1st, 2018 meeting, the Carving Shed ground breaking ceremony that took place on the site of the newly built structure, April 4 and plans for Big House construction.
Directions that had been given by the Big House Committee on March 1 included: #1 - finalization of decision to build the Big House on purchased property opposite the Tsulquate bridge. Another decision #2 -, as outlined in the ‘Notes and Motions’ from the meeting was that the K’awa’ci Construction crew would build the carving shed and include youth and community members in the crew. In addition, this second motion called for a welcome pole as well as a design and name be put onto the completed carving shed. The third motion, #3: Establish a planning committee to over - see planning for the Ground - Breaking Ceremony for the Carving Shed to be constructed.
It was reported that all of the above motions were carried out since March 1. The land for the Big House has been purchased and necessary zoning is completed. The carving shed is completed and four members from the community were hired by the Ka’wat’ci Construction crew. Also, the Ground - breaking planning committee was formed and planned the very successful ground - breaking ceremony that took place on April 4, 2018.
A big acknowledgement is directed to the ground - breaking planning committee who met three Mondays in a row to see the successful ground-breaking ceremony! Members included, Hereditary Chief Tom Henderson, Tom Henderson Jr., Walter Brown, Alvin Walkus Jr., Melissa Henderson, Katie Walkus, Ernie Henderson and myself, Colleen Hemphill as the Chair/organizer of the meetings. Extra support was given by Walter to contact folks for meetings and carving the 12 beautiful paddles as gifts to attendees. Thanks goes also to Chief Paddy Walkus, Hereditary Chief Willie Walkus, Charles Willie and Daryle Coon, Mary Johnson, Dorothy Henderson for their contribution to the ceremony and the feast that later happened in Wakas Hall. Thanks also to Wade and Becky Charlie for the excellent traditional lunch. Also, thanks to Walters young assistants who helped to set up the event, Ernie for assisting with preparing the salmon. As well, Jamaine Campbell recorded the event on video and drone along with David Scott. It was a big and successful ground - breaking day! We are also very grateful for the Noble Ladies and GN School students for dancing and all the staff and community members who came to witness this event! Gila’kasla
Where are we now with the Big House? We have the new Carving Shed for carvers to carve upright posts, cross beams etc in., the land to build the Big House has been acquired. Funds available to build the Big House are more than $3 mil, toward the $6.4 necessary for completion. At the meeting, we talked about what needs to be done to commence Big House construction. Four areas of work were listed:
