Chapter 1 - Guidelines for a Healthy and Successful Life ______________________________________________________________________________
Always be Positive _________________________________________________________
How you think is everything. Always think positive and be positive. Trust us on this one, nothing is hopeless, nothing is impossible and that there are no boundaries for man. The power of the mind is God‟s greatest gift to mankind and the secret to unlocking that power lies in belief. Belief, we contend, is the “deus ex machine” or the magic elixir that can transform a mediocre individual into a first-class human being. Do you remember what our Lord said in the Bible? If we may paraphrase a little, He said, “If you have the belief of a mustard seed and you tell a mountain to move, that mountain will move.” Belief is magic. If you believe in yourself there‟s nothing you can't do. We are not just talking about education here, either. There‟s nothing in any aspect of life, which is beyond the scope of man. You have the power to do anything or be anything that you want to be…nothing is impossible if you believe in yourself. Anyone can do amazing things in life no matter who you are or what your circumstance. You can become or do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. If you think you can, or you think you can‟t, you‟re right. There is a magic in believing. You are what you think you are and you become what you think you will become. We don‟t want to belabor this point, but it‟s just that simple…if you believe, you can go beyond what other people think your breaking point is. In fact, you can go beyond even what you may have thought was your breaking point...if you believe. Have you ever read the book, Anatomy of an Illness, by Norman Cousins? It‟s a fantastic book. If you haven‟t read it, you must. It will instill in you the belief that nothing is impossible. Here is the Reader‟s Digest version of what happened. Cousins had been diagnosed as having terminal cancer and was given only a few months to live. His doctors told him to go home and get his affairs in order because as they put it, “You are going to expire.” You know, check out, cash in, buy the farm. Instead of keeling over and dying, Cousins stood up and said, “To hell with you; I‟m not going to die. I refuse to die right now. I still have things to do. I‟m going to live.” And do you know what? He didn‟t die! In fact, twenty years after he was given his death sentence he is still the picture of health, enthusiasm and vigor. He just refused to die. Isn‟t that fantastic? As we said, nothing is impossible. Cousins is not the only person in the world who turned her life around. In fact, history is full of people who have done a 180 degree turn. And the majority of times the number one factor that turned things around was a change in the individual‟s self concept. Consider the following examples that were compiled by Jack Canfield of individuals who faced obstacles in life, but through belief and hard work became successful. Thomas Edison‟s teachers said he was too stupid to learn anything. Edison went on to become one of the greatest inventors in the history of the world. Albert Einstein did not speak until he was four years old and didn‟t read until he was seven. His teacher described him as, “Mentally slow, unsociable and adrift forever in his foolish dreams.” He was expelled and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. Einstein went on to be considered one of the greatest minds in the history of the world. Louis Pasteur was only a mediocre pupil in undergraduate studies and ranked 15th out of 22 in chemistry. He became one of the greatest medical researchers who ever walked the face of the earth. He developed vaccine for small pox, which saved millions of people from becoming physically disabled. Isaac Newton did very poorly in grade school. He went on to become one of the greatest physicists. The sculptor Rodin‟s father said, “I have an idiot for a son.” Described as the worst pupil in the school, Rodin failed three times to secure admittance to the school of art. His uncle called him uneducable. He went on to become one of the greatest artists. In 1952, Edmund Hillary attempted to climb Mount Everest, the highest mountain then known…29,000 feet straight up. A few weeks after his failed attempt, he was asked to address a group in England. Hillary walked to the edge of the stage, made a fist and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, “Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but I‟ll beat you the next time because you‟ve grown all you are going to
