Momentum

n the 2003/ 2004 footballing season, Arsenal went a record 49 consecutive top-flight league games unbeaten, breaking Nottingham Forest's previous record of 42. The run only ended when Manchester United were harshly awarded a penalty in a controversial match which eventually ended 2-0 in favour of the home team. Forty-nine consecutive matches unbeaten! That is something, isn't it?! How were they able to achieve this remarkable feat? Well, I think the reason is pretty simple: they simply kept on—they kept on moving, and winning, until an external force was strong enough to keep up, and kick them off the ball. And you can trust it took a great amount of effort to do so. That is momentum! Momentum says keep on moving. And the greater the momentum, the larger the amount of force required to stop the object that is moving. 'Momentum is the ‘impetus gained by a moving object'.

MOMENTUM REQUIRES SPEED Certainly, all of us have been called to excellence, but very few people will ever attain it. God has called ordinary people like you and I to the extraordinary. There is however not one of us who has not come to that place in life when the vision is overwhelming, the task ahead seems so impossible and the desire to withdraw rather than push forward has not come to tempt us. It happens to us in our walk with God, in our academic pursuits,

in our relationships, in business… It gets hard sometimes, but how do we keep moving? How do we keep the momentum going? How can we press through to the greatness God has called us to and not shrink away? The writer of Hebrew knew a way—‘strip down, start running—and never quit!’ Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God— he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls! Hebrews 12:1—3, MSG We keep the momentum going by stripping down and running. Stripping down every weight that could weigh us down, or

distract us from pursuing the goal—‘parasitic sins’, sloth, the wrong relationships—focusing on the goal, and running for it.

Zechariah 4:10 says: “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…”

SMALL IS NOT SO SMALL. SLOW? NOT QUITE.

It’s not really about where you start but where you end up. Our momentum once started will become an irresistible force regardless of how we began or where we are.

“Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones out of the brook and put them in his shepherd’s [lunch] bag [a whole kid’s skin slung from his shoulder], in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near the Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:40, AMP

FINALLY Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philipians 3:13—14, NKJV

Have you ever thought about what the Israelites and the Philistines were thinking when David reached down and picked up the five stones. They were probably saying. “stones, really…that kid is going to fight the giant with rocks. . .we’re in big trouble. . .we’re probably all going to die here today.” The Philistines were probably snickering, laughing and anticipating a great victory. But what seemed small and insignificant to almost everybody else became a destiny changer in the hands of David.

Press on. #Momentum It gets better.

Walt Disney was fired from his first job for not being creative enough. J.K. Rowling was fired from a secretarial job because she spent too much time daydreaming about a boy...Harry Potter. A Baltimore television producer told Oprah Winfrey she was “unfit for the evening news.” The list could go on. Never let anyone demean your ideas or minimize your potential for success.

SUDAN CRISIS

s

udan is in the midst of a political crisis after security forces opened fire on pro-democracy protesters in the capital, Khartoum. Representatives of the protesters had been in talks with the military over who would take control following the ousting of long-time President Omar al-Bashir. In December 2018, President Bashir's government imposed emergency austerity measures in an attempt to stave off economic collapse. Cuts to bread and fuel subsidies sparked demonstrations in the east over living standards and the anger spread to Khartoum. The protests broadened into demands for the removal of Mr Bashir - who had been in charge for 30 years -

Talks between the ruling generals and the protest organisers, who have come together under the umbrella group Alliance for Freedom and Change, initially showed little sign of progress, but they eventually came to an agreement. But negotiations collapsed when a military crackdown on 3 June left dozens of protesters dead.

and his government. The protests reached a climax on 6 April, when demonstrators occupied the square in front of the military's headquarters to demand that the army force the president out. Five days later, the military announced that the president had

The army said it had scrapped all agreements with the opposition, and that elections would be held within nine months. But the protest movement insisted a transition period of at least three years was needed to ensure elections are free and fair. Much of the country was then shut down by an open-ended strike called by the opposition. Amid the deadlock, an envoy from Ethiopia was brought in to mediate. And the story continues...

RUN FOR HIS PLEASURE. Eric Liddell's Story.

aturally, I don’t like movies. It takes me an average of two days to watch a 2-hour movie in not less than 3 different sessions. Friends will attest that I would most probably watch a movie after I have heard reviews on it. 6 years ago, a friend introduced me to a movie that for the past 6 years, I keep watching. It’s the 1981 award-winning movie released based on the life of the Scottish athlete, Eric Liddell with the title, Chariots of Fire. Eric run in the 1924 Paris Olympics for the British team. Three scenes from the movie spur me on in life, to keep running, to keep pressing on and to never give up.

58:30 - 59:10 “I believe God made me for a purpose, for China. But he also made me fast, and when I run, I feel his pleasure. To give him up will be to hold him in contempt. 1:27:00 -1:31:00 Eric meets with the board and he is firm with his decision not to run on a Sunday. After he left the meeting, the British Olympic committee had this conversation.

afterwards. A year later, he let go of the national pride and glory and went to China as a missionary. There he lived for 20 years and died later of a brain tumor in the Japanese prison camp in Weishien, (Weifang) during the second world war (the Japanese tried to take over China, and in 1943, they put all the foreigners in the country into a prison with harsh conditions). In the camp, Liddell became a track and rugby team coach. He was also a Sunday School teacher. Stories of his life and the impact he made in the lives of the prisoners he was with in Weishien have spurred many on in their decision to run till the end. Stephen Metcalf, who was then a child during the prison times shares how Liddell’s life challenged him to forgiveness, love and service. He eventually returned to Japan as a missionary. He says, “Weishien Camp had many great teachers. None of them meant more to me than Eric Liddell who was a famous Olympic athlete. He gave up all to come to China to teach the youth of China.

Margaret Holder says “In the camp, the children played basketball, rounders, and hockey, and Eric Liddell was their referee. Not surprisingly, he refused to referee on Sundays. But in his absence, the children fought. Liddell struggled over this. He believed he shouldn’t stop the children from playing because they needed the diversion. Finally, Liddell decided to referee on Sundays.” This made a deep impression on Margaret—she saw that the athlete famous for sacrificing success for principle was not a legalist. When it came to his own glory, Liddell would surrender it all rather than run on Sunday. But when it came to the good of children in a prison camp, he would referee on Sunday. Mary Taylor Previte, imprisoned at Weishein as a child, described Eric as "Jesus in running shoes”. Dr David Michell writes

Eric gave me two things.

“Not only did Eric Liddell organise sports and recreation, through his time in internment camp he helped many people through teaching and tutoring. He gave special care to the older people, the weak, and the ill, to whom the conditions in camp were very trying. He was always involved in the Christian meetings

“His worn-out running shoes. My own shoes had worn out and it was mid-winter. Three weeks later he died of a massive brain tumour. The best thing he gave me was his “Baton of Forgiveness.” He taught me to love my enemies, the Japanese, and to pray for them...”

which were a part of camp life. Despite the squalor of the open cesspools, rats, flies and disease in the crowded camp, life took on a very normal routine, though without the faithful and cheerful support of Eric Liddell, many people would never have been able to manage. None of us will ever forget this man who was totally committed to putting God first, a man whose humble life combined muscular Christianity with radiant godliness.”

it in real life. He knew God made him fast, and whenever he ran, he felt His pleasure. His race may be seen as a sprint, but his life showed the consistency, convictions, momentum needed to finish the race till the end.

Randy Alcorn writes after meeting one of the survivors of the prison camp,

Convictions— to stand for what we believe in regardless of the cost.

“What was his secret? He unreservedly committed his life to Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. That friendship meant everything to him. By the flickering light of a peanut-oil lamp early each morning he and a roommate in the men’s cramped dormitory studied the Bible and talked with God for an hour every day” Liddell’s life is one that depicts the theme— Momentum. He ran it on the track and lived

We too have been called to excellence, to a life beyond ourselves- to selflessly live to glorify God with our lives in whichever task he has called us to do, be it sports, academia, ministry, or the corporate world. With the gifts God has given us, we need:

Consistency— to repeatedly do what we know we have to do, no matter how small the effort we put in may look like.

He that honours Him, He himself will honour. God Himself is our ultimate honour in what he has called us to do. I pray we would draw inspiration from this life, to run faithfully till the end. We may not be celebrated in this world, and that’s okay… We seek a higher honour, God Himself… And as we honour him, he will honour us. Finally. . . from where does the power come to see the race to its end? “From within” 1:53:42-1:54:00 Further Reading 1. ccording to physics, and all those really old, boring guys, momentum is a product of mass and velocity. Velocity is the measure of distance over time. Where am I going with this? My first goal was to actually bore you with all that physics stuff, but now that that’s over. . . Momentum comprises of how much you hold within you (mass) and your velocity (how quickly you’re headed where you’re going). Where is the average Christian going? Where is the end? From what I read, I can safely say that the end is a haven even before we get to heaven. The end is the sweet solace where our hearts find out what peace really feels like. The end is Christ. And not only when we get to heaven, but even here on earth. Paul in his historic letter to the Ephesians 4:13 could not have put it better than to say “ till we ALL reach unity in the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining the whole measure of the Christ.” For the Christian, the aim is not perfection. The aim is to be progressive, with an OS better than the last one, as we walk through life. To allow for periodic updates, even when they require that we shut down and reboot.

Again, our dearly beloved uncle tells us quite emphatically to “forget what lies behind us and strain towards what lies ahead of us.” In other words, to press on and push past present, regardless of where we are currently. If you’re good, you can be better. If you’re better, you can push as close to your best as you can get. You can pray a little more, be proud a little less, love a whole lot more, and sacrifice a little more. There are always deeper depths and higher heights. And if you don’t push, you’ll never know just how much strength you had inside of you. When we talk about mass, we’re talking about the stuff you’re made of. We’re talking resilience! We’re talking willpower! Determination! We’re talking about how much ‘push’ you have within you. How much is in you that you haven’t yet poured out? How much faith are you holding deep inside, behind all those fears and worries? How much love do you have inside that big beautiful heart that Satan tried to hide beneath the hurt? How much joy do you have to spread to the world? How much pent

up anger is in you? What are you made of? If physically, we are what we eat, and obesity is a risk factor for hypertension and diabetes; then spiritually, if we have more than enough of Christ it’ll show in our veins and arteries just as much. We can either spray a little Jesus on ourselves, around our wrists and behind our ears, or we can allow for His alabaster box to be broken over our heads. Only one of these would attract everyone with its fragrance both far and near. You can decide to be whichever one you want. What happens to the Christian who has ‘backslidden’? The beautiful thing about reaching rock bottom is that the only way is up. The aim is not to fall completely before realizing that there must be a change, but to keep moving on. You have way too much God inside of you! Velocity differs from speed in the sense that it has direction. Who are you pointed towards? Who do you look forward to? Is your velocity more affected

by deceleration than it is by acceleration? You’ve heard about drag forces right? Those weights that Hebrews 12:1 talks about vivaciously. Your mass is directly proportional to how much of Him you keep within you – you cannot give what you do not have. You’re velocity is more than just your speed – you must be headed towards Christ, not just towards church or bible studies (i.e. mere religion). With these two intact, you can reach your maximum momentum – a charged bullet ready to hit the bull’s eye, pen in the hand of a ready writer! The Holy Spirit is always there for these reasons – to be with you when no one else can. To keep you directed towards Christ and made up of His kind of willpower. To help you revise all your high school physics after all this talk…lol. We’re all not there yet, but we can either sit still and look pretty or show the world what it’s really missing!

The Great Cloud of Witnesses, P. O. Box Hebrews 12:1, Heaven. Today.

Dear Runner, You may not know me, but I know you. We all do. From the day you entered the Kingdom, until now, we’ve watched you. Silently. Loudly. Screaming for you. Praying for you. Giving you vim…most of which you’re largely oblivious to. We can see how you’re almost despairing. Losing your steam. Seemingly slowing down, to a stop. From the sea of many faces, and many unknown witnesses, I’m sending this to remind you: Don’t stop. It actually didn’t take much to get here…no Job-level kind of tests. A couple of hits from the Enemy, a few plans gone askew, some obstacles in our progress, and here you are, at a standstill, slowly grinding to a halt…or are you? Momentum. Everyone keeps going on about it. About how you should end well. Go out with a big bang! Gird your loins, and ran this race to a roaring, jaw-dropping, leg-breaking, crowd-cheering finish! But what do you do, when momentum is seemingly missing…when the forces against, appear to be winning the battle? Don’t stop; that’s the conclusion of the matter. In all your despairing, don’t stop. Take it one day at a time. Take all the missiles one day at a time. A thousand bazookas, and 400 atomic bombs may drop in a day, but take it one day at a time. Remember the promises of God, and hold Him to it. Great is His faithfulness… morning by morning, new mercies you see…all you have needed, His hands have provided. Immerse yourself in His Word. Granted, this may be hard to do, and may appear futile, but do it anyway. Take it one day at a time. One memory verse at a time. One Scripture at a time. One devotion at a time. A quiet time a day, keeps the devil away, and slowly, but surely, fuels the momentum tank. These words are alive and active, and it may seem like things are not working, but do it anyway. Keep going. 1

Find solace in Godly friends, the small accountability group that will keep you going, and carry you when your legs give up under you. They will share the streams of living water flowing from their bellies with you, because they have drank, and are drinking from the Eternal One. Find friends that will feed you, when you don’t have the drive to eat, because they have the Bread of Life, which will sustain you. He will sustain you. Pray. Even when there are no words. Cry from your heart, like Hannah did. For you, it is music. ‘It is well’. ‘Oceans’. ‘Come to Me’. ‘Strong Tower’. ‘New Wine’. ‘By Myself’. ‘God will make a way’. The list is endless. Elisha called for the harp to be played, and heard the voice of God. Saul called for music, to get away from that which plagued him. Find the outlet that draws you away from despondency, and that inlet that finds you God, because you need Him. Poetry. Dance. Spoken Word. Writing. Find it, Use it. Find your way back. And remain. And build. You will finish. Because the One who called you is faithful. And His words will never fail. I know it looks like you’re the only one with so many setbacks, but you’re not. Even the worldly people seem to be moving at a progressive pace… Trust me, I’ve been there. At a time that I thought I was all that was left, and there was really no point going on, I found out there were 7,000 others, and I was given strength… Look to His promises. Look to the Word. Drink from others. Pray. Listen. Write. Find it. Find Him. And build momentum again. You’re at the finish line, and the End is glorious. It’s already been promised. The devil has already been defeated. Like he’s fighting a lost war, don’t give him the pleasure of winning this battle. God's promises are yea, and amen. And they can be trusted. Find Him. Press On. Build Momentum. Finish. We’re rooting for you. The cloud of witnesses, Your witness.

o many times I made dance moves in my head. The few times I stood to materialize the mental motions, I was a laughing stock. Close friends know why I don’t dance, but trust me, I have wonderful moves in my head….. While we stood at the foot of Mountain Afadja, I could just envision the energy, speed and flair with which I was going to get to the top. I looked at the top from beneath. It did not look too daunting a task. “I can do this”, I told myself. Mount Afadja (or Afadjato – as “to” means Mountain in the Ewe language) is the highest point on Ghanaian land. It stands a height of 885m. Going there was made possible by the University of Ghana Medical Students Association (UGMSA), as part of the student week celebrations. The beginning was bright for us all as we marched to the base of the mountain. The remainder of the climbing experience varied for each individual. I will share a few things I learnt.

JUNE/JULY2019

44

gnomicmagazine.com

1 MAKE IT TO THE TOP, NO MATTER WHAT!

In the company that climbed, there were different kinds of people. There was a range of heights and weights, different levels of exercise tolerance, and do you know what the beautiful thing is? Every single person climbed. Everyone started, and no one returned after we started. It took the first person 32 minutes to reach the top (32 minutes). Klenam did it in 34 or 36 (It’s officially certified that Klenam has a V12 engine). Some did it in 40; I did it in 50 – I think I was the 6th person to get up there. Some people got there 10 minutes after I did, and others, an hour. (Shoutouts to the 4 ladies!)

low, lactic acid built up in muscles, bodies dehydrated, knees aching, minds weary, eyes tearing, clothes drenched, we climbed on. Feeling like giving up was universal, and yet we all made it somehow! Thank God no one succumbed. I personally didn’t because, what would be the point then? Climb halfway and turn back because I was tired when the distance back to the base would take me to the summit? I had come too far to give up! In the end, the time spent climbing was really not a matter, because you had reached the highest point in Ghana! How long it took you was nobody’s business. The experience was golden. When we got to the top there were people who had been there before and had written their names on rocks in ink, and some even engraved. People got to the top and called for Kilimanjaro and Everest. Now that they had conquered Ghana, they were ready to face Africa and the world!(Kilimanjaro is 5,895 m in height and Everest is 8,848m.)

The exercise was not easy, but going back was not an option. There were points one felt the knees wouldn’t bend and stretch anymore, and the legs wouldn’t carry anymore. The rib cage would shake with each heartbeat. We were forced at certain points to crawl and hold roots and trunks just for a little more support. Chest tight, head heavy, I even felt at a point like my aorta was being ripped out of my body. Simply lifting up my head became an arduous task. With SPO2

JUNE/JULY2019

Is it daunting? YES! But I learnt that determination is all that is needed. We all have big dreams that scare us. Some are way too lofty. But like Afadjato, Kilimanjaro and Everest, they can be conquered. The journey will be tough, but determination will take you to the end.

gnomicmagazine.com

“But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘With men, this is impossible, but with God all things are possible’” – Matt 19:26

Tell yourself you will get to the peak and let the thought of it excite you. Tell yourself you will not turn back, no matter how tired you are. There, I remember Martin Luther King Jr : “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

I daresay that with determination, so many things living in your fantasies are possible. New targets set! Kilimanjaro set to be conquered someday with determination. Someday, just someday, I will dance!

If you ever thought that you were inadequate at doing something, it is because you were not determined enough. It is not because of your money or lack of it, not because of size or race, not because of intelligence, but because you were not determined, at least not enough. My twitter profile reads: “Don’t take “Don’tstop stopto and takaepeek a peek Don’t stop till you are at the peak Even there, don’t stop!” . . .there will be other peaks higher than what you just conquered.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

T

here is an end to everything and whatever is worth doing must be done well. It is our responsibility to become our best everytime, because time lost is never found. Life is not only concerned about our wellbeing, but that of others as well since we were made for relationships. Sometimes we get confronted with the idea that, we have done enough, and most times we do accept this opinion. We have not done enough, until we are dead. “There is more room for improvement. Each one of us has the primary duty to become the best of herself or himself. Life presents to us what we press on to get. It has limitless possibilities and it takes the one with courage and persistence to break through. Our incessant desire should be to push further. We ought never to give up for we have come so far. Let us be counted among those who have been tried, tested and proven. Why should we become the best? We must become the best because we are made of the best for the best. We cannot expect less when we have been created in the image and likeness of God. Our mandate is to be fruitful. In order to become our best self, we have to know who we are and where we are going, make the right decision and daily pursue with courage the vision in our hearts.

JUNE/JULY2019

The journey of life is well travelled by those who know their destination. One thing we have to realize is that all things are of God. We are of Him. With this in mind, let us not bother whether people believe in us or whether we have the ability and a supportive environment. Where we do not see these things, God exist to take us through. We need a firm resolve on who we are. We are created by God and our lost image can be found in Christ. Knowing that Jesus died for us tell how important we are as children of God. This will help us in our choices. We will live for just a while on this earth, and we have to live well. Our understanding of this will help us to know what to listen to, what to watch, what to say and what to write. Who we are influence what we believe and do. We are God’s masterpiece, made unto good works. Let us not give up. We will have to give an account of our actions. Since we are made for excellence, there is the need for us to decide to be

excellent. If decisions are needed, then choices have to be made and we have to rightly examine them. Are they right, pure and valuable? Great things require great sacrifice. We have to let go of things that are not valuable to get us to where God is taking us. We have to put in more and move ahead for what is important. We are either part of the solution or the problem. Thank God, we are made the salt of the earth and the light of the world. We must decide to preserve, lighten up and bring hope where there is despair. We have to see the great need of humanity, the need for a saviour and the need to fulfil purpose. Our decision to accomplish our individual purposes will spur others on to find Christ Jesus and fulfil their purposes. Finally, we have to pursue with courage the vision in our hearts everyday. Like the lepers in 2 Kings 7, we have to move. They said to themselves, if we stay here, we will die, if we go there we will die. Let us go, perhaps they will have mercy on us. Dear, you have to move ahead,

JUNE/JULY2019

move further from where you are. God made you for more. You were made for excellence, nothing less. Do not let anything put you down. Be reminded that, God is with you wherever you go. Remember what He told Joshua, “only be thou strong and courageous.” See every day as an opportunity to grow and advantage to become better. Pursue the vision God has placed in your heart. Let it cause you to pray. Let it make you learn. Commit to the vision everyday. In our quest to attain excellence, it should be our constant desire to seek the Lord in all things, acknowledge Him and Let him direct our path. “Life will never be easy; we have to get stronger”, a quote on Infinix phones. Be strong, be courageous and know that you are a person of value. God is your unfailing strength. With Him, you will make it. Push further dear. Pray more, learn more and do more. The decision is yours. Set your mind for excellence! Be Excellent!

Klopp ended a run of six successive final defeats and claimed a first trophy as Reds boss when his side beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid. It was also the club's sixth European Cup title, taking them third on to the all-time list behind Real Madrid and AC Milan and he commemorated the achievement by tinkering with the lyrics to Salt-N-Pepa's Let's Talk About Sex song. Talking to former Barnsley and Sheffield United striker Jan Aage Fjortoft, who works for Norwegian television station Viasport, Klopp was mid-answer when he was struck by a musical mood.

He said: "There are always a couple of people who can tell you, 'Yeah, but you didn't win', but now..... 'Let's talk about six, baby, let's talk about you and me, let's talk about all the good things and all the bad things there may be."
