ONE

History

In Indonesian the term ‘Bajau’ is applied to both boat-nomadic and sedentary populations, including some land-based, primarily agricultural groups, whose scattered settlements are found throughout a vast region of islands and coastal littorals, extending from the southern Philippines to the northern and eastern coasts of Borneo, and eastward over much of eastern Indonesia, from Sulawesi to Timor. Their numbers have declined rapidly in the last century, and today they probably amount to fewer than 10,000. In eastern Indonesia, the Bajau as a whole, including both nomadic and sedentary groups, number between 150,000 and 200,000, and in Sabah, approximately 120,000, including at least 30,000-40,000 recent Philippine migrants. The ancestors of the present Bajau began to spread from an original homeland located in the northeastern islands of Sulu, southwest of Mindanao, sometime early in the first millennium A.D. The principal movement was southwestward, through the Sulu Archipelago of the Philippines, to the eastern Borneo coast. By the early seventeenth century, Dutch accounts of Sulawesi record the presence of large numbers of Bajau around Makassar. And when Sabah

gained independence within Malaysia, and throughout most of the postcolonial period, the Bajau, as the largest Muslim minority, have played a decisive role in state politics, disproportionate to their numbers. In Indonesia change has been equally rapid since independence. Here Bajau communities have been under official pressure to abandon boat-nomadism and nearly all are now shore-based, living in coastal villages, characteristically dependent on fishing, trade, and other maritime pursuits for their livelihood. Their religion are majority muslim, they have their own leader that is called by Sultan. Their social organization tend to be EGALITARIAN. Egalitarian means believing in principle that everybody are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities. An ideal Bajau or Bajo marriages are arranged by their parents, and also polygamy is permitted so that is why divorcement is very frequent happen. Their marriage always celebrated in a very colorful way. DALING-DALING is the name of the dance that is always performed in every wedding ceremony, the man is dancing on top of a robe according to the music that comes out from kulintang, and gong.

Ideas

After done some research about Bajo Ethnic, I tried to combine or mix the condition with Venezuela’s image. My new country should be as beautiful as Venezuela or even more, and the thechnology is not lacking as well. The Ideas for the new country that adopt from the Bajo Ethnic are; Floating Country (on the sea) first. The houses and buildings are built on top of the sea. second. Transportations are using boat and some are under the sea. third. They have religion and believe in God. fourth. Sultan is the leader of the country and Sultan’s words are law. Moving country (on the sea) first. The very huge land is actually a ship. second. Consist of three big ships. third. They have have the same language but different dialect. fourth. Worship sea, and believe that sea is their God, because sea has a big role in their life.

10

Pirate Country (on the island) first. They all are pirates, automatically born as a pirate. second. Nomads, living in a ship and in group. third. All of the oceans are their free areas even though it is other country’s ocean. fourth. They do not believe in God only believe on their own kind and their leader is called as Captain. fifth. They are the best swimmer on the earth, natural talent. At the end I am choosing the floating country, because I think it is the most perfect one. I consider Pirate Country idea as a very good one but it is too common and coincidently my friend has the same concept. And so I decided my new country name is I do not use another name or even trying to use English name because this country is all about Bajo people that already modern, but still keeping their traditional touch. They proudly say the name and regain the ancient glorious, accepted to be the strongest human on the sea.

Bajoera,

Symbol

A symbol is something such as an object, picture, written word, sound, or particular mark that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention. The new symbol of my country should be representing my country’s speciality and its power. A symbol should have just stay simple but already telling you the general idea of what behind the symbol. My country is all about sea and ship, so I choose the blue color and brown should be in the symbol. Brown or gold can represent the wood and also gold.
