Group Play: sharing content between devices

H

old tight as we run through an overview of all the new and exciting highlights that the Samsung Galaxy S4 has to offer. All of the features and functions listed in this article will be covered later in the Handbook, so this is a quick taster of what to expect.

Perfect Sense Innovation has always been one of Samsung’s strong points and with the collection of sensory controls on the Galaxy S4, it has delivered again. You will feel like Tom Cruise in Minority Report using Air Gesture as you scroll through web pages or change a music track using a flick of the hand, without

even touching the screen. Put those magic fingers to work again in Air View, which allows you to preview certain content just by hovering a digit over the screen. Samsung Smart Pause lets you control the movement of the screen with your eyes; when watching a video the phone detects when you look away and freezes playback until your eyes return. In a similar way Samsung Smart Scroll allows you to navigate through pages by detecting your eye movement.

Good To Share They say it’s good to share and the S4 evidently agrees. Who needs Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you

have Group Play and its ability to connect directly to other devices, sharing and creating content together, including the Share Music option to blast out the same music tracks on separate devices. For a more tranquil experience check out Story Album, in which you can assemble a montage of pictures, posts and memos into a personalised photo album.

Sharp Shooter Talking of photography, the 13-megapixel camera with autofocus is impressive enough in its own right, before you even begin to consider the shooting

Introduction modes that accompany it. A Dual Camera feature allows the S4 to take pictures (or videos) with the front and the rear cameras simultaneously, blending the images together into a single frame. Other innovations include Drama Shot, a multishot mode that enables a continuous time-lapse of the action and Sound & Shot, which captures audio and images at the same time, for an accurate record of everything that occurs in those memorable moments .

Software Skills You’ll be pleased to know that the S4 isn’t lacking in the software department either. Fitness fanatics will appreciate how S Health monitors and tracks your exercise, food intake and general well-being, while globe-trotters will enjoy receiving recommendations on exotic places to visit in S Travel. They can also get assistance in any language difficulties they might encounter when talking to the locals thanks to S Translator. Car travel is made easier and

safer with S Voice Drive, enabling drivers to activate phone controls via voice commands when driving at the wheel.

The Entertainer If all that outdoor activity sounds like too much effort, why not convert your handset into a fully-fledged TV remote, capable of controlling your home entertainment system? Samsung WatchON also lets you stream live TV. If you prefer a more sociable activity to while away the time, check out Samsung ChatON, an

Google It Finally, being an Android OS device, the Galaxy S4 also has access to the multitude of services that Google has to offer. A host of applications come pre-installed on the handset, including Google Maps, Google Plus, Google Play, Gmail and Navigation. And in the unlikely event that you tire of everything that comes bundled on the device, just head to the Google Play Store or Samsung Hub, where there are thousands more apps to download, alongside music, videos and games galore. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has something for everyone.

Introduction

The Samsung The Samsung Galaxy S4 is the latest in a long line of related devices all running on Android, so let’s look at the evolution of this highly functional family...

T

he four devices pictured here are all proud members of the S Series, the top of the range group of Galaxy smartphones. Starting with the Galaxy S way back in 2010, all of them have featured various improvements and enhancements that in turn have led directly to the Galaxy S4. Over the next few pages we will review these handsets and chart the heritage of the Galaxy line. It’s not just the hardware that has been updated, because the Android operating system has also seen many modifications and refinements over the years (the Galaxy S4 runs on the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean 4.2.2). For a

complete explanation of Android and its quirky naming system see our feature p20. The Galaxy family of phones spreads its arms even wider than the S Series, taking in a huge range of devices on all budget levels. There’s everything from the premium Galaxy Note, a large smartphone/tablet crossover (or Phablet as some people like to call them) used with a stylus, to the low-end Galaxy Ace range of prepay handsets. Every single member of the family runs on a version of Android, so if you’re the owner of a Galaxy Note, Ace, Fit or Gio, for example, then many of the tutorials and guides in this handbook will be relevant to your device too.

Introduction

Android Uncovered

Activated on more than 900 million devices and with a huge 75% market share, Android OS is the dominant force in the smartphone world. But what makes it so popular?

A

ndroid is by far and away the most widely used mobile phone operating system in the world, with the majotiy of smartphones on the market running it in one form or another. The key points to note about Android OS are that it’s fast and slick, very simple to use and extremely intuitive. Novice users can pick up an Android device and start swiping and tapping away almost immediately, while more experienced consumers just love the ability to change the look and feel of the internal menu. And with each successive version that’s released, the user experience just keeps on getting better. The primary navigation point on any Android smartphone is its homescreen, which acts as a portal containing shortcuts and widgets to a host of applications and features. This can be fully customised to suit the user’s individual preferences and

22

Samsung Galaxy S4 Handbook

hundreds of thousands of apps can be downloaded and installed. Android handsets are highly responsive and support a fluid touch interface, providing haptic feedback and adjusting the screen orientation if you hold the device upright or sideways.

Open minded

Google owns Android, however a big part of the appeal is that it’s an open-source project, meaning anyone can develop software and applications to enhance the user experience. There are thousands of talented developers out there doing just that, with an almost limitless scope for customisation. This is how Samsung phones are able to add an extra dimension, by laying a unique interface called TouchWiz over the top of the Android menu system, which is why the Korean company’s smartphones look different to other Android models.

How to check which version of Android your device is running There’s a quick way to check the version of the operating system that your handset runs on, be it a Samsung Galaxy model or any Android-powered smartphone. Access the Settings menu, which is normally found by tapping the Menu button at the bottom left of the front panel and then selecting Settings or System settings. Look for the ‘About phone’ or ‘About device’ listing and click on it. The actual location will vary from device to device, for example on the Galaxy Ace it is the last item in the Settings list and on the Galaxy S4 it is found within the More tab. A detailed list of your phone’s particulars will appear and on this the Android version will be displayed.

The Galaxy S4 runs on 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

The screen above was taken on the Samsung Galaxy Ace. If you’re feeling brave, click on Software update to see if there is a more recent version of Android you can upgrade to.
