Chief Executive Officer Alex Stewart Change is difficult but often essential for survival . - Les Brown Despite the current challenges, we are looking towards many opportunities that we will be introducing to add value and drive customers to your businesses. These opportunities will be in various forms including new products, new product categories, new processes and ways to create demand. I attended a seminar this week hosted by Mark Fletcher from Tower Systems. As with the previous “Newsagent of the Future” seminar series, this was both informative and challenged attendees to really look into their businesses. Mark also related change as a driving necessity to remain viable which validates our change strategies even more.
I had the opportunity to present to the recent ANF/QNF National Conference in Brisbane themed “Pathway to Prosperity”. The general message of my presentation was that GNS are undergoing a significant change process that will ensure the business remains a viable and long term concern. The well used saying or excuse of “This is how we’ve always done it” is no longer relevant for most of what we do, and our results over the last few years suggest that this is no longer valid. It seems this theme of “change” was quite constant at the conference and it was great to see this view is shared from not just suppliers and industry associations, but by our customers relative to their own businesses. There was talk of 25% of Newsagents will not be in business in 5 Years’ time, which is a daunting thought. If this theory does have a degree of truth then it becomes an absolute necessity to look and question everything we do and challenge the “This is how we’ve always done it” statements. In a past Newsletter I referred to an article called “Re-Invent to stay relevant” which could not be more relevant in our current conditions.
At GNS you will see, or maybe have seen, evidence of positive changes that will deliver meaningful results and ensure the channel is not just viable but progressive and flourishing.
Alex Stewart CEO
You cannot expect to achieve new goals or move beyond your present circumstances unless you change . -Les Brown -2-
New South Wales News Well its almost time for the NSW Market Fair again so we at GNS Sydney are looking forward to the weekend and are deep in the planning and detail, this year’s fair will be at the Dome in Homebush which promises to be an excellent fair once again and I look forward to seeing you all there. The warehouse will also be operating as usual during the weekend. We are also getting ready for the promotional runs prevalent at this time of year, Diaries, Xmas and Back to School which give you, the customer, excellent chances to increase revenue for your stores. Our recent Supplier Day in July was a great opportunity for many customers to not only take advantage of the supplier specials but to also top up their Mid Year stocks in the last week of the special pricing.
We are also trialling a Saturday trading on the 28th July, 10.00am until 4.00pm; this idea has been raised by you through your Area Managers so I hope we will see a good turnout. It’s been great talking to many of you about your various stores and how you are doing financially, and what you are doing to increase revenue and turnover despite the current economic downturn Good to see that simple items like refurbishing your stores, doing relays and simply showcasing your specials has such a positive impact. Here’s looking forwards to catching up at the Sydney Market Fair, The Dome, Homebush, Saturday 25th August, and Sunday 26th August.

Western Australia News Welcome to the first GNS e-Newsletter. This has been a long time coming and I’m sure you will agree a much more efficient and progressive way of communicating. The WA Market Fair is only a few weeks away and in response to the overwhelming feedback from stores, this year we are offering you the choice of delivery month for orders placed with Suppliers on the day. Delivery can be arranged for September October or November. This will allow you to spread your deliveries over a suitable time for your business in the months leading up to the major seasonal events and not be invoiced until the month you take delivery. This initiative is designed to assist you with cash flow and ultimately allow you to take advantage of a wider range of opportunities available from our Suppliers This year you will see a completely different look to the GNS stand. We’ve done away with the traditional layout and are presenting our range in a 360 degree format. This means more room for you to view and interact with our complete Christmas, Back to School and Diary range.
The transformation doesn’t end there. This year we are offering one lucky store the chance to win a Super Pallet of product valued at over $5000 ($10,000 SRP). Just by attending the fair you will go into the draw. Over 40 Suppliers have contributed their top selling and new product lines to the pallet. Once again the GNS Retail Website will be showcased with an emphasis this year on setting up School Book Lists and ways to promote the website and your store to the schools in your area. Visit the stand and speak with Colleen about the necessary tools to do this. All customers who complete their website registration at the fair will go into the draw to win a Website Content Development package and 12 month Updates Subscription from New Web valued at over $700. The Market Fair is the one day when pricing is better than any other time of the year. All orders placed with Suppliers on the day are guaranteed lower than our everyday Cash & Carry pricing and can’t be matched by any other wholesaler. Each year our Industry Suppliers offer deals and specials designed exclusively for the fair. To take advantage of these offers you must attend.
I look forward to seeing you all at Challenge Stadium on the 12th August

Are you getting the best out of this star performer?
Did you know that by simply placing an order for your Diaries and displaying them in your store that you are not maximizing your sales potential?
Do your Diaries justice
Be active with your Diaries and you will achieve a very nice profit – how? follow these simple 3 steps. 1. Purchase enough Brochures featuring the Diaries the market demands 2. Victoria & Tasmania News Market Fair Considering how tough retail is at the moment, Market Fair is arguably one of the more important events, to help try and stimulate business growth towards the important Christmas & Back to school retail period. This year we are working hard at making Market Fair even more meaningful with the assistance of Vana, and the ANF. We certainly have a goal to make this event the vehicle to help drive your business forward. Market Fair is also about your planning. The cliché that “you will only get out what you put in” rings very true, so you need to plan what your business needs to achieve from Market Fair. Business training, financial planning & assistance, marketing support, point of sale and etailing systems, promotional planning and great product offers are all available, so please plan what you would like to achieve when you attend.
Mid Year How did this years Mid Year Sale go for your business? We would appreciate your constructive feedback, as it helps us to understand what we need to either maintain or improve, in regards to product offers and marketing. What can we add to this sale that will assist further? Did the adding of retails in the order form assist you when ordering? Are there products you are seeing demand for that should feature in this promotion? We would like to also hear from the businesses who did not participate in the Mid Year Sale. Why does this sale not suit your business? What can GNS add or change to give you an opportunity? We tend not to receive much feedback regarding these promotions, so I would really appreciate any input that may just help us improve the opportunity these promotions can create for you.

Queensland News Yearly Roundup
Staff Changes
Well the financial year has now finished. It was certainly a year of challenges, but with challenges also come opportunities. We finished slightly behind the previous year in total sales and we believe that in the context of trading in our industry that is an acceptable result. The interesting fact was that when reviewing individual accounts, the majority of our larger accounts actually grew in purchases with GNS. Maybe the fact that they have continued to promote themselves and keep their shelves full is the reason they have continued to grow. Please don’t just sit in your shop and say that the economy is tight. That attitude will self perpetuate a decline. Proactive Newsagents are still showing good
I would like to take this opportunity to update you all on some staffing changes that have happened here recently. The previous Queensland Sales Manager has moved on and we are pleased to announce that Mr Michael Bryant has now taken on the role. Michael has 20 years experience in Sales and Management with Cadbury. We are really thrilled to have Michael on board and I know that he will be attempting to meet you all at some stage in the future. Melanie Roberts who looked after the Hervey bay, Bundaberg area has moved interstate to pursue other business opportunities. We all wish Melanie all the best for the future and thank her for her efforts. Rather than replace Melanie we have decided to split the territory between Steve Livingstone from Rockhampton and Yvonne Compagnoni from the Sunshine Coast. We believe that we will continue to give the level of service that you would want.

Traditionally, the most important time for any retailer is the Christmas trading period and now is the time to plan ahead and use your stores layout to take advantage of the increased traffic flow. It may y be as simple p as dedicating an area to the Christmas lines you intend to carry or by jumping into the spirit and dressing up your store. The GNS Market Fairs roll out throughout Australia next month and this is the perfect opportunity to see and touch the exciting new lines available this year so you can decide what will be best for your store and customer base. The Christmas range includes all the decorations you will need to show off your house or tree or to make the most enviable dinner table presentation including , crackers, baubles, lights, table runners, bows, cards and tags to name a few. On top of these lines you will also be able to see the toy range which this year is even bigger and brighter than before and catering to all ages. There is an array of cars and dolls, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor games, soft toys and the list goes on. There is no better way to select the Christmas lines you feel would work in your store than by seeing them all on display under the one roof and therefore maximising the anticipated boost in sales through your product d t selection. l ti So this year, look at your store from a Christmas shoppers’ view and showcase your range in the best location to grow sales right through the Christmas trading period, after all, we now all know Christmas is more than just cards and wrap !!!!! Quote................... “From a commercial point of view, if Christmas did not exist it would be necessary to invent it” Katharine Whitehorn.

OFFICESMART AGENTS ARE COMPETITIVE ON PRICE!! Quite often Officesmart Agents comment that they can’t compete with Officeworks on pricing. We want all Officesmart agents to be confident in the retail prices set in the quarterly brochure. Below is an example showing the difference in pricing between Officesmart and Officeworks, this comparison was done using the Officesmart Brochure #2 2012 and was compared with Officeworks Tax Time Prices Brochure (OW5009). Items that were selected would be typical items ordered for the office. As you can see there is a substantial price difference….. Officesmart on these items was $90.57 cheaper than Officeworks, which is 9.17% cheaper. Not only does this show that Officesmart Agents can compete with the likes of Officeworks but it shows that the power of advertising a business works! Consumers and agents believe that Officeworks will be cheaper. Officesmart agents need to advertise their business. One really good way of doing this is to continue to distribute your brochures, consumers will not know how great your pricing is until you show it to them! I get an Officeworks brochure in my letterbox regularly; it obviously is a successful marketing tool. The Officesmart brochure is a wonderful tool, but not if you leave it in the box.
