Tri-continental Evaluation Seminar in the Netherlands 4th - 14th October 2010

Slavery Museum in Amsterdam

We were invited to the Slavery Museum (opened in 2003!) and Memorial Park (Oosterpark) in Amsterdam. This was a recent addition to the increasing awareness of Amsterdam in its role in the Slave Trade. We were able to walk round and see the exhibits and excellent way they had depicted the role of the Netherlands in Slave Trade from the very beginning. The National Monument to Commemorate the History of Dutch Slavery – a modern sculpture by Erwin de Vries – was unveiled in 2002 and now stands as a permanent reminder of the atrocities and also the emancipation of enslaved humans.

On our day out in Holland we visit ed a historic village in the Marken region with its original and working windmills, this was straight from a Delft plat e with its blue glazed pictures of windmills and canal boa ts. The village has been preserved and the Windmills cutting wood, grinding spices and making colours were wonderful. It should not be forgotten that it was this “new technology that created the condition s for the building of the Slave Ships and the manufacture from raw materials brought back.
