For many of our participa nts Lisbon was the first foreign capital they got to know ... far away from home and alw ays with a great need to tell their familie s that everything is going we ll ... using the e.p.a. computer! Lisbon is a perfect site to study colonial histor y with it’s rich collection of historical evi dences. But there is still a lot to do to deal with the colonial pa st and to involve this pro cess into the portuguese educational system as our hosts con firmed. The famous Monument to the Discoveries repres ents a romantic idealisation of the Portu guese past that was typ ical during the regime of Salazar - dec orated with a mosaic sho wing a world map with the routes of Portuguese explorers wh ich by the way was donated by South Afr ica in 1960.

During the Exchange Spanish, Portuguese, English, Singing and Da ncing were the main languages. Especially Da nce brought the young people from 3 continents quickly together. The tram, the bus sto p and the terrace in Alc ou tim we re the sta ge s where pe op le performed, where they shared their energising chorus and made people laugh. Wilfran - one of the tra iners and professional dancer and dancing tea cher from Colombia offered daily dancing classes that finally brought a well worth see ing final presentation at a theatre in Lisbo n - “A Triangle that moves!

Connected to their chosen topic young people invited their friends to play, to tinker, to act, to sing and dance. The group from Recife proposed a hand massage with relaxation music to warm up brain and fingers, to create an ear pricking atmosphere for the actual workshop. Maybe a good idea for the next G8 summit! The workshops and presentations of the groups offered an amazing insight into applied youth work in Europe, America and Africa ... a kaleidoscope of methods, ideas and creativity. Also very interesting: the different skills and routine to express in public - obviously the Europeans could learn a lot from their friends from the south.

We went to an area in Almada (the opposite site of the river Tejo, overlooking Lisbon) where you can still find the remains of old wind mills. Now this area is crowed with blocks of flats , inhabited by mostly migrants from all over the world (mostly from the Portuguese colo nies) and struggling with a great diversity of social problems. The children, young people and fam ilies from the community were delighted to spen d a playful afternoon with people from 3 cont inents, they were happy to talk to the group from Cape Verde, they were happy to play with crazy Jamaicans, to dance with talented Colombians and to meet funny Ghanaians! This day ever ybody was a winner ...

Exhibition

e.p.a. organised a poster (A0 size) with common themes so that each of the 12 partner groups could present common topics of city, project, young people, their connection to the Triangle Slave trade, their hopes and wishes. These posters followed us throughout the exchange with the highlight of all the 12 posters in exhibition at the Portuguese Institute of Youth in Lisbon. A special visitors book was opened to encourage comments from the public. This exhibition was visited by many politicians, youth officials, youth workers, young people and members of the public. The benefit of this venue was that it is part of the Lisbon Youth Hostel and also has many workshop rooms and a large theater where we experienced the amazing final night.

The upside of the food was that we achieved a fomidable outpouring of local hospitality in Lisbon from our host group Ecoestilistas which they prep ared themselves. This was in contrast to the mean relu ctant attitude of the Portuguese Youth Hostels who’s kitc hen staff still still think they work for Salazar?! We had to fight for the basics even though they had a large poster on their wall showing the delights and necessities of you ng peoples nutrition. But not to be out done we arrange d to raid local orchards for supplementary nutrition.
