This is who we are. TECHNICAL COLLEGE OF THE LOWCOUNTRY 2024 STATE OF THE COLLEGE Beaufort | Bluffton | Culinary | Hampton | Colleton | Online www.tcl.edu/2024
DEAR FRIENDS,
What’s in a name? Though a rose may smell just as sweet regardless of what it’s called, I contend that there’s much to be revered in a name. Take the name “Technical College of the Lowcountry” for example. Who we are is all right there in our name.
Technical speaks to the career-focused education and training we provide to thousands of students annually for high-skill jobs today and tomorrow. As a nationally accredited two-year community College, we offer more than 60 academic certificates, degree programs and university transfer options. And, most importantly, Lowcountry denotes our foremost commitment to our local community spanning Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties.
The naming of our new 50,000 square-foot training center, which received a $10 million appropriation from the state of South Carolina last year, is also significant. The Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center will be built at the college’s New River Campus in Bluffton. It’s named for General Art Brown, a longtime TCL donor, advocate and former commissioner, to ensure his name and legacy live on for generations to come.
We were also very intentional in finding just the right name for our new mascot.
Last February, TCL embarked on a months-long, community-wide initiative to choose an official mascot and gathered input from our students, alumni, employees and the community. In August, we announced the “Tides” as our mascot, a perfect representation of TCL’s vision to elevate the students and communities we serve and a fitting symbol of the steadfast spirit of our students and alumni.
You’ll note that this year’s State of the College report focuses on the many names behind our institution—from graduates to donors to other community partners. In addition, you’ll read important highlights from the past year and learn more about our plans for 2024.
Names matter. They certainly help define who we are as a college. I encourage you to get to know us by name, whether that be our faculty and staff, our programs of study or our students and alumni. As our partners in higher education and workforce development, we promise to welcome you by name to any of our campuses anytime.
Sincerely,
Richard J. Gough, Ed.D. President

With capacity for up to 850 students, programs will include manufacturing, automated systems, logistics, business, computer technology and more. The project is estimated to cost around $26 million with a three-to-four year approval process and construction timeline. Advisory Committees WE MEAN BUSINESS
GUIDING THE FUTURE
WORKFORCE: The college’s Advisory Committees provide invaluable input and professional counsel to a variety of programs and curriculum. Made up of local and regional industry, business, government and educational representatives, these experts act as a communication link between the college and the community to ensure ongoing program relevancy and graduate competency.
I strive to give a real-world perspective to the program, making sure that the students are not only prepared to take the state board exams but that they are excited and engaged in real-world salon experiences. We care about student success now and in the future.

The TCL Foundation AMPLIFYING IMPACT
Established to serve the Technical College of the Lowcountry, The TCL Foundation is a taxexempt 501(c)(3) organization and accepts contributions on behalf of the college. Like community colleges nationally, TCL relies on local support to advance its mission.
TCL is state-assisted—not state-supported— and receives 18% of its operating budget from the State of South Carolina. In order to keep tuition affordable, the college depends on generous philanthropic support to sustain and expand its facilities, academic programs, student support services and more.
Donor gifts are instrumental in allowing TCL to serve more students and graduate more skilled workers. Thereby, donors who ensure TCL’s future also ensure a stronger local economy and better business climate.

Faculty & Staff Donors GIVING FROM WITHIN
TCL SUPPORTING TCL: Each year, TCL Faculty and Staff join together in support of the college and give back. Faculty and staff choose to give to student scholarship, dedicated departmental funds, the President’s Fund and to the Guarantor’s Program—the college’s Student Emergency Fund—just to name a few. Last year’s annual Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign, “I Give,” raised more than $13,000 for TCL students and programs. Thank you to these generous employees for giving back and helping advance TCL’s mission and vision.
