India’s Newest Music Festival Is Here

C

ome the new year, if you're in Goa, just close your eyes and follow the cool sounds , and you should appear at Zimafest‌ India's newest Music Festival is here! At the end of January 2015 Goa will absorb new-wave sounds that combine loud, piercing chords of rock performances and moving, melodic vibrations from DJ sets of the EDM scene. Zimafest presents a dichotomous mix of a classic all-round music festival that has live AND DJ performances, at the same time starting a new trend in the Indian festival environment. The event will be held in the heart of the North Goa beach belt, right at the Baga bridge. Showcasing the best culture and music of two very different countries, Russia and India, Zimafest will present a decidedly rich program, starting January 23rd with a cultural evening. There will be something for everyone, and the discovery of

Held on the eves of 30th and 31st of December at Marquis Beach Resort, Candolim, Limbo 2015 is one of the most premium New Year’s Eve parties in the country, in partnership with youth TV channel, Bindass. The festival features some of the most iconic artists both from India and abroad to make you break the dance floor in a hellishly good time. Speaking of Hell, the decor has a Heaven & Hell theme, and so does the dress code. This is the best time to unleash the good and the evil side of you, and don some halo hair bands and devil’s horns. While the gates will open around 8, the DJ’s will be spinning smashing hits till 3 in the morning. And that’s not all. The venue is called Marquis Beach Resort for a reason. The reason being that IT’S ON THE BEACH! Can it get any better? (For all you Marquis virgins out there, this place is the absolute bomb – one of the most amazing beach spots in the state, with wide grassy areas and enormous cement platforms). The party will be burning the beach with bass drops from EDM remixes of Bollywood tracks as well. They call it BEDM or Bollywood Electronic Dance Music. With an evening so powerful and electrifying, you’ll barely miss the days from the past year as you dance the night till 2015 is officially on the calendars. Book your tickets today from www.bookmyshow.in.

This evening you can participate in a Russian folk program, sample the goodies in the Russian food and drink stall, participate in the Indian folk dance "Dandiya", or watch classic Indian Kathak dance. For lovers of quiet relaxation, there’s yoga practice from one of the best in the business, plus astrology and mehendi services. In parallel, enjoy the ambient DJ sounds and the thrill of a live band! Street performers will be part of this ‘mela’ and, for shoppers, racks with clothes and jewellery that will make great gifts for loved ones. Entry to this cultural evening is free and everyone in Goa at that time is invited to join. The next two days are all about music!! On 24th and 25th January Zimafest presents a musical program with performances by Russian and Indian rock bands, such as the cult Russian rock group Alisa - a team with a rich history of thirty years and provocative imagery; Dolphin, also from Russia, a‐ poet and experimenter whose work fans have long loved for honest and candid lyrics; a n d Parikrama of India, a unique, wildly popular group from New Delhi who have played

more than 3000 concerts. Also playing are cool bands like Madboy/Mink and F-16’s (funk and electro-pop), and the captivating blues-rock band, Shillong-based Soulmate. Zimafest hasn’t forgetten about fans of electronic music and has put together the best representatives of the EDM community. Headlining Saturday 24th evening will be Karsh Kale (India), who over the past 12 years as a solo artist, producer, composer and DJ has turned the world of electronic fusion upside down and helped create a whole new genre of music and culture. And at the center of Sunday’s program will be DJ Avalon (UK) - one of the most famous representatives of the international psy-trance scene. He has worked with such DJs as Tristan, Astrix, Loud, and is currently ranked first in many charts with his new creation «Avalon remixes». Also at the festival,

you can enjoy performances by your favorite DJs from Belgium, Argentina, Switzerland, India and many other countries that will delight you with their musical sets. On Republic day weekend we will celebrate both India and music at Baga! Winter comes to Goa! Look for updates on the website www.zimafest. com A full list of participants will be available very soon!

Tips for a well-designed party

T

By Latika Khosla

ropicool. Even if December is not sub zero here in Goa, the drinks and the ice are chilled. Create your own version of a winter wonderland in breathtaking tropicool blue and white. The lead stars are lights this time of the year. Lamp bases echoing the northern lights. Find tall sensual shapes of blown glass, look out for colors of cerulean, hazy purple and crystal clear glass. The solid colored glass lamps, arresting in depth of color and form immediately stand out as a color accent. Smoky lamps are ideal for enhancing a lounge look at a party casting a muted flattering light. Gloss and Glace. Set the table with sculpted dinnerware in liquid colors of aqua green and deep ultramarine blue. Look out for varied shapes for serving quiches, large bowls for fruit, generous salad servers and platters for delicious feasting. Continue this ethereal mood with linen in prints and patterns, which resemble snowflakes, lace and pointillist stars; a chic look ringing in a pristine New Year. Oriental bounty. The season celebrates

plenitude and the joy of giving. Dare we bring beautifully nurtured produce to the table as a stunning centrepiece? Put together, golden cobs of corn, mandarin oranges, purple skinned berries, glistening aubergines, red pomegranates. Trim this with inspiring greens and lay it out like an Oriental still life. Silken shimmer. Hosting a large number of people means extra seating at the table or a grand buffet table. With a sari one needs less than the whole nine yards! Pick a wonderful hand woven one in a stunning combination: a purple with an ochre, classic green and red or brick with gold. Make a part of this saree the striking central runner on the main table, with the borders as a talking point.

Magi Metal. When the Magi came bearing gifts, they carried beautiful ornaments of Middle Eastern origin. Bring out the chased metal work, the hand crafted vessels and boxes. Set them centerstage as tablescapes on consoles, on side tables and in the entryway. Place candles settings close to these arrangements and the magical metal will cast back the glow of the season. Give in to Good Design, Everyday. Happy Holidays. 

The Lowdown  11 Happy New Year, from Goa Streets! Goa Streets takes this opportunity to wish all our readers a very happy New Year! We hope you enjoy our lively and entirely honest offerings on these pages, from our no-holdsbarred Year in Review to our listings of top New Year’s Eve parties and brunches to our Mind, Body & Soul stories on diabetes and mental health. This is a wonderful time of year in Goa, and not just because the cool, breezy weather and the buzz on the beach. It’s also because of the sense of joy and optimism in the air. True, challenges abound. From figuring out how to get the tourism sector back on track to reining in the ominous garbage menace in the state, Goa has much work to do. But for now, let us take a deep breath and savour the moment. Let us remember that there is much to be grateful for, and that we are all recipients of a great allowance - the gift of life. The world is a dangerous and complicated place. For many, the blessings of prosperity, meaning, happiness and even love are but a distant dream. But these days are a time for celebration and renewal, and they are to be embraced. The internal journey is no less important than the one on the outside. It’s a new year, a new beginning, and an opportunity to break out of the constraints that keep us from attaining our potential. And this New Year in Goa, let us think also about the world beyond ourselves. Our planet is in grave danger, according to every credible scientist in the world. Income inequality is on the rise throughout the globe, and India is helping to write the book on injustices of every kind - from female infanticide to corrupt governance to rising incidences of rape to child labour to the ubiquitous trampling of human rights and dignity. And yet, in this land of stunning contradictions and unbreakable family and community ties, we see so many flashes of light. As we wrote in last week’s edition, the ultimate meaning of Christmas is that a better world is possible. That is the meaning of a messiah. That is the hope of the ages. And that is our wish for all of us in 2015 and beyond. Happy New Year from Goa Streets!

Ominous winds – and a breath of fresh air

I

By Crespo D’Souza

t was Nov. 2013 at the Grand Hyatt in Bambolim. The scene of the then high-flying ‘left-liberal’ Tehelka Think Fest, which appears to have been its last year following the downfall of its founder amid a sexual assault case. Fast forward to December 2014. Another high-profile national think fest was also hosted in Goa - the threeday ‘India Ideas Conclave’ put together by the India Foundation, a nationalistic conference billed as the right wing’s answer to ‘Nehruvian socialism’. Could it have been any more different from the Tehelka event? The change in ideology of the national conclaves being held in Goa can be seen as something of an allegory. While there’s reason for some optimism on the national economic front, it seems these past 12 months have taken a notable toll on free thought and progressive ideals. The journey from Think Fest to the India Ideas Conclave hasn’t

necessarily been a happy one. Here in Goa, as in the rest of India, the past year will best be remembered for the unprecedented feat of bringing the BJP to power at the centre with an absolute majority, largely on a development agenda. The victory has emboldened nationalists and fundamentalists, and we seem to be in danger of a downward spiral into vitriol and xenophobia. And yet, the rise of Hindu nationalism at the national level also serves as a reminder of Goa’s special place in the union as a bastion of easy going-ness, a multi-religious, multi-cultural oasis that provides a breath of fresh air amid the ominous winds. Here in Goa, the mining ban has been

ostensibly lifted but in practice is still in effect. So far the tourist season can be described as somewhere between very bad and utterly catastrophic. So without mining and tourism, many Goans are asking what is left? Take a look around the state and it’s obvious there’s some progress afoot. Roads are being widened. The lacklustre 2014 Lusofonia games, even if they failed to inspire us, did leave us with a much improved infrastructure for sports. But even that example comes with an obvious question. If the government can get its act together as quickly as it did in the run-up to Lusofonia, finishing the stadiums at breakneck speed against all odds, then why can’t it do the same for some of the state’s other great challenges, most notably the garbage menace that seems to be growing worse by the day (a tourism killer if there ever was one)? The challenges our state faced this past year were gargantuan – from mining to garbage to tourism to infrastructure. It was some comfort to know that we had at the helm a chief minister who, at least by the standards of this part of the world, was seen as relatively clean and competent. But even that was taken from us, when Manohar Parrikar was summoned to Delhi to become Defence Minister and was replaced at home by the incredibly bland and entirely unproven Laxmikant Parsekar. To make matters, when we have so many urgent issues to tackle, why is everyone suddenly talking about ideology of all things? The Goa chapter of Forum for Integrated National Security (FINS), an NGO which claims to be “apolitical” was formed last year and has rooted itself here. It has found patronage from Parrikar, several members of the RSS and former army men, bureaucrats, judges and businessmen.

Things don’t generally happen in a vacuum, and many Goans were rightly alarmed when PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar called for an end to the state’s “bikini and pub culture,” or when Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza claimed he is a “Hindu Christian” and that India is a Hindu nation. The government has been dragging its feet over moralistic posturing by politicians on issues such as pubs, bikinis and beach shacks. And it’s gone the extra yard to host FINS, a think-tank headed by RSS ideologue Indresh Kumar. The Goa government also took a long while to react to the hate speech and other threatening overtures from Karnataka-based right-wing politician Pramod Muthalik. The government has been cracking down on criticism of ruling politicians. “What we are seeing is a brazen rise of fundamentalist thinking, which was at one point of time at the fringes, but is now occupying the central stage. Similar attempts by the Hindu right wing elements were made when the BJP was in power here a decade back, but the efforts then were ham-handed and obvious. This time there is an element of sophistication. Like PM Modi, there is a top leadership which is very politically correct and say the 'right things', while those below do the grunting,” observed Mayabhushan Nagvenkar, a journalist and political commentator. Nagvenkar said that the virtual absence of political opposition and a Catholic Church which appears to have gone into hiding after cornering government grants to run their schools, make things easier for the Hindu right. In some ways, the pact Goans have made with the BJP is not completely unlike the one Indians have made at the national level: We’ll let you have your little Hindu party if you give us a better life. In Goa, that means tackling big issues like mining, garbage and tourism. On the mining front, the government has handed out leases in the form of renewals, a move which the NGO Goa Foundation has promised to challenge in the courts as an “act

of corruption.” The garbage problem isn’t any closer to being solved, even though Parrikar laid the foundation stone for a garbage plant along the Saligao-Calangute hill. From the tourism point of view, there isn’t much to cheer about, either, save for the Visa on Arrival facility that has finally been set in motion at the Dabolim airport. “The falling ruble, the Ukrainian political crisis and subsequent sanctions against Russia have dampened the mood this Christmas season. It doesn’t seem like Christmas anymore,” said a TTAG spokesperson, adding that the government’s failure to solve the garbage problem or build badly needed infrastructure has battered an already devastated industry. And yet, life in Goa is certainly not all gloom and doom. In recent weeks we’ve put on a successful once-in-a-decade event that brings in throngs of pilgrims from around the world, the Exposition of Relics of St. Francis Xavier. Many economists expect the Modi government, after a few more months of adjustment, to put India back on a high growth path (say, 8 percent a year or more) and Goa certainly stands to benefit from that. And let’s not forget that this past year witnessed the first edition of the Hero Indian Super League, in which the Goa franchise ‘FC Goa’ beat all odds and initial setbacks to make it to the second place in the final standings before losing out to Kolkata on penalties. Now that’s a reason to cheer. 

Where to be in Goa if you want a memorable start to 2015 By Dielle D’Souza

Y

ou’d have to be the New Year Grinch to curl up in bed without good reason when everyone else out there is celebrating the start of the New Year. But it’s been done before. Still, with the options available in Goa, it’s very hard to assume you won’t be clinking glasses as the clock strikes midnight. Thanks to a free-spirit culture, availability of cheap alcohol and a cheer you can literally smell (over and above the disgusting heaps of garbage), Goa has long been the place to be in India on New Year’s Eve. This overwhelming attraction causes establishments to whip out menus and rate cards with inflated prices, roads to be clogged with traffic and the sale

of lots of lights and fireworks. (With tourist numbers way down this year, however, we may see a lot of those prices come down to earth). The ‘traditional’ way to celebrate the start to the New Year is to attend mass as thanksgiving for the year gone by and blessings for the one to come, followed by a ball. These dances are packed with folk dressed in their Sunday best, showing off dancing skills and meeting friends. Every hall worth its name hosts an annual party on December 31, and tickets may be either booked in advance or at the venue. When he was younger, Carlton Carvalho from Benaulim figured it made more sense to party through the night and fulfil his religious obligation by snoozing during the morning service. “But it soon changed to attending midnight mass first followed by a few drinks after we realised the crowds were too much to deal with on New Year’s. I would rather spend time with a few close friends,” he said, adding that the first one out of church calls a restaurant and books a table. Most others, particularly tourists, prefer either the beach shack experience or a club shindig. It’s the shacks that attract those who would prefer to walk in off the beach still in slippers and shorts and let their hair

down. There is music, sometimes a barbecue or a buffet, and lots of good cheer. Many even have a fire going on the sand to keep the nip away, and they’ll probably let you roast your own marshmallows if you cared enough to carry them along. Clubs and classy lounges offer a more beach resort ambience, where you can dress up but still not bother with behaviour too much. The clubs down Tito’s Lane stand in testimony to Goa’s charm each year. Sinead McManus, who lives in Calangute, usually travels home to Ireland to celebrate with family, but has decided to stay back in Goa this

time. “I haven’t yet decided where I’ll bring in the new year but it’s definitely going to be a tough decision. There’s still a few days left and my friends and I will definitely be see-sawing it until the last minute as usual. So far, it’s a choice between the new and exciting La Brise in Candolim or the longestablished Marbela Beach in Morjim,” she said. Pooja Vinod Trindade too plans to bring in the New Year with friends who are coming home on their annual visit. “Last year, my husband and I brought in the New Year together, but this time it’s going to be a lot bigger. Many of our friends who have moved out or are busy with work will be in Goa, so it’s the ideal time to meet,” she explained, adding, “We’re looking at places where more locals hang out. At the moment, we’re considering Cohiba in Sinquerim since it’s new and we like the ambience there.” If 2014 has been prosperous, turn those rose-coloured glasses on to five-star properties. Extravagance is relegated to the dust as they pull out all the stops to treat patrons with the most fabulous time they can put together. Kedar Dhume from Panjim has been bringing in the New Year at the Grand Hyatt Goa in Bambolim over the past couple of years. The resort has this year suggested plans for “the best

party in India” featuring something that’s “never been done in Goa before”. Across the length of the coast, luxury properties are putting their heads together to increase competition and widen the choice. For some, venturing outdoors to an organised event is simply a waste of time and money. This lot would rather have a house party, most often a pot luck, with lots of good food and drink and catching up. With a large open property outside her home in Thivim, Nicole Pavri discovered the joy of New Year barbecues last year. With a bunch of close friends, they built an effigy of Father Time, stuffing him with leaves from the garden and hay from the fields. Together, they whipped up a barbecue, played drinking games on the porch and

partied till they fell asleep right where they were, eliminating the hassle of late night drunken driving. Celebrities are known to partake of the private party option and have, over the years, included the flamboyant Vijay Mallya, actress Neha Dhupia and movie star Salman Khan. Jimmi Harkishin who plays Dev Alahan on the UK’s Coronation Street and Hollywood actor Richard Gere have been spotted in earlier years as well. Rumours abound that Deepika Padukone might pop by this year as will Priyanka Chopra who is reportedly set to bring in the New Year with family and friends at a private bash at her home near Baga. Whoever it is and wherever they’re from, the aim is to start the new year on a happy note. So party responsibly, stay safe and kick off 2015 in good spirits. Happy New Year! 

By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello

Do you or anyone you know have diabetes? Do you think twice before indulging your sweet tooth? World Diabetic Day was observed last month, and on this page psychologist Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello gives us some insight into this potentially deadly disease.

A

s I visited one of my uncles, John Pereira, from Chinchinim, a diabetic who had undergone a cataract surgery recently, I heard about his struggles with this disease. As is his way, John tries to look on the bright side, “I have early meals. I avoid red meat and exercise daily.” My uncle is a man bound by discipline and diet. His daily routine of brisk walks coupled with an hour of cycling, and a strict diet plan to complement his healthy lifestyle, have held him in good stead! And yet diabetes is not to be belittled. A cause of disability and premature death, diabetes is related to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, renal failure, and many more complications.

Diabetes can be Type I and Type II. In Type I diabetes, the pancreas produces little or no insulin, which regulates the body’s metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. These patients have the disease for a lifetime and have to be treated with insulin shots and a strict diet regimen. Type II diabetes is more of a lifestyle disease, where-in the person is leading a sedentary life. Patients with Type II diabetes are generally overweight and do not exersise. A third type found among expectant mothers is the gestational diabetes, which disappears after the birth of the baby. Diabetes Mellitus, characterized by high sugar levels, can lead to several complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, heart, brain and the nerves,

and can even cause death. Some 347 million people worldwide have diabetes. The World Health Organization projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030. More than 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middleincome countries. India has the second largest diabetes population in the world, with an estimate 65 million affected people, as of 2013. The International Diabetes Federation has estimated that this figure would rise to 109 million by 2035. In 2012, every 6th Goan was found to be suffering from diabetes; i.e. 16% of the population. In an affluent state like Goa with a high degree of Western influence, diabetes has been on the rise. Red meat! Sedentary lifestyle!

Gorging on pizzas and pastries! Overweight and obese people! Goa’s health scenario has been hit by this slow killer. Most of Goa’s diabetics are over 40 years old. Eighteen percent of Goans over the age of 40 are afflicted with Type II diabetes, according to health officials. However, not all diabetics modify their unhealthy habits as recommended by World Health Organization. As per the recent STARCH study conducted by Bayer Zydus Pharma in collaboration with Dr Shashank Joshi and several others, Indian diabetics consume high amounts of carbohydrates; higher (64.1%) than the upper limit of what is recommended in their diet (60%) by National Institute of Nutrition. At times, doctors see diabetes among young children too - especially cases related to obesity. One woman was shocked when her three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes. Today, the 12-year-old girl leads a normal life except that she has to take insulin doses on a daily basis. Diabetes Society of Goa, an NGO established in 2012, is working to create awareness among the general public about this disease and has been trying to create innovative ways to get people to be more diabetic conscious. This November, World Diabetes Day observances have been going on at Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre located in Panjim with participation from patients. World Diabetes Day was observed on 14th November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922. This year, the theme ‘Healthy living and diabetes’ was widely propagated by WHO. Several lifestyle changes have been recommended by WHO - achieving and maintaining healthy body weight, at least 30 minutes of regular, moderateintensity activity on most days, eating a healthy diet of between 3 and 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day, and reducing sugar and saturated fats intake, and avoiding tobacco. Today, people are more aware and educated about diabetes than previous years. Alfred Dias from Margao says, “My dad was diabetic. Though I am not diabetic, I am careful about eating sweets like ladoos, dos, cake, etc. With the Christmas season and the variety of sweets offered, diabetics should be cautious about their diet.” 

There’s No Shame In Needing a Little Support

Sometimes all it takes is a sympathetic ear

The Shrinks Speak

By Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello

N

ot only is it important to be physically healthy but also to enjoy an overall sense of mental well-being. Seeking the help of a mental health professional at the right time can resolve many underlying issues. A few experts share some of their most notable cases with Dr. Charlane Pereira e Rebello, herself a psychologist. Rochelle Pereira, psychologist (Margao)

I first met Rajeev (name changed to protect privacy) 3 years back. He was 14 years old and studying in Standard VIIIth in a very prominent and plush Margao based school. He was referred by one of his teachers and came to me accompanied by his mother and a long list of complaints. He was an above average student but in the last 2 yrs, his academic progress had deteriorated. He played petty pranks on teachers and bullied the younger kids. After the case history intake, I gathered that he was the only child of a well-to-do family. His father was a very influential and busy man who still managed to spend time with Rajeev. His mother had resigned from her job in order to give him more individual attention but all in vain. During counselling, Rajeev appeared defensive and made it clear that he didn’t

want to be there and nothing could make him talk. True to his word, he resisted any attempt at conversation. In the following sessions, his behaviour remained the same. Frankly, I was in a dilemma but I didn’t want to lose hope. But counselling cannot be done on an involuntary patient or one brought by force. In the fifth session, he seemed a little different but still not willing to talk. I decided to try a different tactic when all of a sudden, he burst out into tears. He calmed down after a while and surprisingly began talking. He spoke of how bad he felt when his father kept comparing him to his friend’s son; how his mom would only lecture him about

him letting down everyone; how sad his parents felt when they looked at him. He spoke about how his parents always argued, how he was bullied in school and couldn’t tell anyone as his dad always said ‘Big boys don’t cry.’ As I terminated the session, Rajeev smiled for the first time. In the following sessions, I saw a new Rajeev. According to his mom, there were fewer school complaints; he was helping other students, and taking an interest in studies. Rajeev passed his Board exams with distinction and is currently pursuing engineering. Though all my cases hold a special place in my heart, Rajeev’s case is one I am always reminded of whenever I meet a particularly challenging teenager. My perception towards their rebellious outward behaviour has changed. It reminds me of their particularly sensitive and vulnerable nature. Every child, even an adolescent yearns for unconditional love from their parents. But sadly, not many get it. If children know that their parents are there for them, half the battle is won.

Clifford DeSilva,

psychologist and founder of Goa Institute of Counselling (Navelim) E x cerpts What struck me on her first visit to me was how casually she told her horror story – much as one would tell another that they had made a pound cake that day. For obvious reasons of confidentiality, I cannot reveal what she told me. Her self-esteem was low - somewhere near her ankles – and she was decidedly suicidal. Dear God, how was I going to pull her out of the morass she was in? I thought of how my mentor would have handled this case - and prayed. I used Person-Centred Therapy, treating her with unconditional positive regard as Carl Rogers suggests and reflecting to her the thoughts and feelings that she was not even aware of or expressed. I believe that was what turned the tide. She began to feel, as she later told me, ‘totally understood without being judged – for the first time in my life’. This was one case where I used only Person-Centred Therapy and avoided the temptation to use Gestalt Therapy, my forte. On every subsequent visit I saw the change in her. It was like watching daily the fascinating blooming of a rose bud into a rose. Her zest for life went from just a spark to a flame. She began to glow. Her intrigued friends kept telling her she had become different. Today, she is happily married with a career that could take her places if she took it seriously. But her first priority is her children and family. She remains my most inspirational case not because of what I achieved but because of what she did. 

magine a dimly lit fragrant room with ambient music playing in the background. Imagine being kneaded and rubbed and squeezed in ways that will transform you. Imagine the most relaxed and rejuvenated state that your body has ever been in. It’s important to keep in mind that not all spas are created equal, and as far as world-class treatments and massages in North Goa go, it’s hard to beat Zaara Spa at Resort Rio in Arpora. If you are on a vacation or a local looking for a way to make your day, getting a massage or any other treatment at the Zaara should definitely be on your bucket list. Zaara Medispa offers authentic and highly effective Ayurvedic curative and rejuvenating treatments. A variety of treatments are designed to meet your specific needs: Customized herbal remedies, therapeutic massages, relaxing oil treatments and lot more in beauty treatments. At Zaara, there’s an inspiring range of spa treatments, including relaxing body massages, body scrubs & wraps, and Ayurvedic treatments. You can also go for a range of salon treatments including manicure, pedicure, facials, hair treatments, waxing, threading, hair styles & makeup. (Newsflash: Contrary to popular perception, finding a luxury spa that offers all of those services in a single destination is not easy). Exclusive for weddings, one can choose from a range of professional mineral make up, letting the spa’s

makeup artists enhance your features and ensure you look your best on your big day. But let’s get real for a minute. If you really want to look good, there’s no substitute for revving up your heart beat with some vigorous exercise. Here you will also find a spa gym (fitness centre), with a whole range of the latest Strength and Cardio equipment. Some must picks at Zaara are the hot-stone massage, luxurious aroma therapy massage, podykizhi (Herbal ‘potl’i message), and the royal Ayurvedic massage. With a hot stone massage, you can indulge in a healing art that seamlessly blends the ancient Ayurvedic palm-based massage with the use of heated basalt stones to relieve tension and soothe tired, painful joints. With special emphasis on key marma points of your body, it will bring complete harmony to your mind and body. To improve the flow of energy, the therapist will also place hot stones on the hands and on the soles for a relaxing sensation. In the aroma therapy massage, the

strokes may range from frictional to relaxing, blended seamlessly to allow the body's internal system to benefit from the properties of the blended oil. The oil enriches the skin and produces a warming effect to improve blood circulation and relieve tired muscles. The Podykizhi massage begins with the application of oil followed by dry fomentation, using small linen bags filled with herbal powders. This massage helps to relieve pain stiffness and swelling of joints. The royal Ayurvedic message is a traditional Indian massage that uses a combination of soothing and symmetrical long strokes to regulate the circulatory and the nervous systems in the body. The sesame-based herbal oil used in the massage heightens concentration and leaves one feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. After having a back massage from Zaara Spa at Resort Rio myself, I would say that there is no better way to deal with prolonged stress than getting a massage. Frankly, as I write these words I’ve never been this relaxed in my life. And all it takes is a drive to Arpora. Contact 0832 2267300 or email:zaara@resortrio.com, info@ zaaraspa.com

mother-daughter duo value change, believing it’s important to move forward instead of resting on laurels. Their collection, is on display until February at their studio/gallery in Arpora – and it’s well worth checking out. Shireen grew up in Bombay and went to London when she was 19 years old. She worked with an advertising agency for ten years, then started her own commercial studio. “But it was tough in a man’s world,” she recalls. After two years of strife and struggle, she felt burnt out, and decided to come and live in Goa. That’s where her journey as an artist began. Painting Goa-centric themes, inspired by the play of light and shade around the countryside, Shireen likes to create a series on a particular subject. “Doing a series, you get depth of your subject as you proceed,” she affirms. Initially working on paper in pen, ink and watercolours, in 1983 she participated in a group show at Hotel Fidalgo. In 1985 she changed to canvas, and found it fascinating to paint in acrylic, a versatile and quick drying medium. From 2005 to 2012, her series focused on the bull on the streets of Goa, bazaar scenes and beachscapes. In this exhibition, she has painted flowers for the first time. Studying the series on flowers by the great American artist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887- 1986) led her to paint the Hibiscus flower known in Goa as the September flower. Among the high-bred hibiscus bushes she has cultivated, one blooming outside her studio drew her attention. The bloom starts out white in colour, and as the day proceeds it changes to pink, turning almost magenta by the evening. This, she says, was an inspiration. Dexterously created textures and

Making an assessment of the span of her career, 65-year-old Shireen says, “The mantra to success in life is to make decisions and implement them, luck doesn’t come without effort”. Daughter Saffron grew up in Goa and attended the International School in Kodaikanal. She says she prefers the rural ambiance to bright city lights. “As a child I always loved to draw and paint, but never considered being an artist. I had a leaning to fashion designing,” says 25-year-old Saffron. She did a three-year Technical and Further Education course in Australia, and when she actually got down to it professionally, felt it was not the right choice. This is when she, too, came to art. Saffron’s preferred painters are Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, one of the greats of the past century; contemporary artist Audrey Kawasaki based in Los Angeles, known for her distinctive erotically charged portrayals of adolescent women; and American modernist painter Alfred Henry Maurer. The colours of India, and Goa, Greek and Indian mythology, inspire her. Women have been the focus in much of her work. Intricate strokes and colours grace her compositions in mix media. Her displays vary from juxtaposing man and animal, tantric and

With images of a bullock cart, or an elephant decorated in tribal garb coming to Goa for the season, one finds a wide range of art language. Saffron has participated in a group show at Cube Gallery in Moira (near Mapusa) and also had a solo show at the Grand Hyatt last year. She is also a commercial illustrator. “I find there’s not much competition in India, especially in Goa, and now that art is growing here, it’s quite good for me.” She also displays her paintings and prints at the Saturday Night Market in Arpora, and looks forward to a long journey with form, figures, pigment, and structure. How do you deal with the worst tourist season in recent memory? How ‘bout bust up some beach beds? By Jaydeep Singh

By now everybody knows that Goa is experiencing one of its worst tourist seasons in memory, with drastic reductions in the number of people visiting the sunny state. Controlling the number of beach beds on the Calangute/ Baga stretch might be a laudable goal, but with the tourism scenario we’re facing this year, sending cops to the water’s edge to wreck havoc with tourist installations seems like a highly questionable tactic. Is there not a better way? Below, Jaydeep Singh writes about his experiences witnessing this beach-bed bust up this past week in Calangute, part of our Goa Streets citizen journalism initiative “Heard on the Streets.” Be sure to log on to www.goastreets.com to see more photos and video of Jaydeep’s findings.

T

his past week, there was a raid team conducting checks on the beach shacks at Calangute. There were almost 20 uniformed police along with some plain clothes personnel who were accompanied by what appeared to be some local goons. The police in uniforms were mostly spectators to the goings on whereas the plain clothes persons were checking the number of beds at every shack. They were loud, rude and hostile towards the shack owners who were attending to the few foreign guests and Indian tourists.

At some shacks where the beach beds were in excess of the permissible number, they used a power saw to cut up and destroy the beds, thereby creating a scene which was not pleasant to behold. “This is the time to earn, and these people are coming and cutting up beds. It’s very sad, you know,” said one beach shack operator, who, like others, didn’t want her name used as she was criticising authority. The foreign tourists were the most upset by the behaviour when all of this could have been done in a discreet and official way, without this unnecessary display of authority. The peace and quiet was more disturbed by the throng of police personnel than by any excess tourists, as the season has been largely a failure. “It’s not as if the beach is overcrowded. It’s not doing anybody any good. Basically, it’s just taking business away from the owner,” said one British tourist lying on the beach. “Normally, (Goa) is a nice place to be but when things like this happen, it just causes bad feeling amongst people.” Last year the taxi strike created a lot of discomfort and inconvenience to the tourists. This year it seems to be this new beach bed check. If Goa's tourism is suffering, it seems to be largely due to the lack of welcome coupled by

extremely random regulations, rude behaviour, and unplanned civic services. It is making Goa an unattractive holiday destination. Something needs to be done to save the tourism industry. The population survives on its tourism industry. The regulations must be consistent and a long-term policy needs to be implemented.

6 –year-old Sander van Doorn is a Dutch electronic dance music producer and DJ. He is listed in DJMag's top 100 djs list, with a rank ranging from 51st to 10th in the world during the past eight years. We don’t have to tell you that means he’s hot. Red hot. The best part about him and his music is that both are going to be at GOA SUNBURN 2014, part of an amazing line-up of artists that helps explain why Sunburn has emerged as one of the premier EDM festivals on the planet. To mark the occasion of such electrifying international acts flying to Goa, Goa Streets’ crack photographer, reporter and utterly dedicated EDM aficionado Shubham Gupta did a crisp interview with him. SG: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of India? SVD: I have been to India in 2012 for Sunburn Goa and the response from the fans has been overwhelming. Goa is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of India. SG: Where all have you toured in India? SVD: I have been on tour to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and of course Goa. SG: What do you think is the scope of EDM festivals in a market like India? How different do you feel it’s going to be over the European EDM scene? SVD: India is a growing hub for Electronic music and has some extremely talented local artists, too. The EDM scene in Europe is much more evolved. SG: What is it that you want to take back from India and Sunburn tour this year? What are you expecting the experience to be like? SVD: Sunburn Goa has been an amazing experience. Hopefully, this will be bigger and better, knowing the Indian market has been so welcoming to all the international artists.
