Ticking Away to Explode Big Time
D
By Ananda Krishna
NT. Sound like an explosive? Remind you of a firecracker? Well, you wouldn’t be too far off except it’s not gunpowder but a band starring two dynamite personalities. Denzil Pereira, 31, and Trisca Fernandes, 31, have been dazzling audiences with their versatile style that gives a new, edgy spin to Bollywood and music from 12 different languages from India and abroad. DNT began five years back with Denzil and Trisca sharing a common passion: Bollywood music. They first met during a regional film shoot where they discovered their musical connection. Denzil, who had already been performing as a one-man artist, asked Trisca to join
him at a gig, which needed a female performer. From that one show in South Goa, the duo began growing in popularity. They would go on to perform as many as nine gigs a week. That’s not to say their start was struggle-free. They made cold calls to ask for shows. They fought to get promoters. Soon, they started playing music regularly for corporate shows, NRI weddings and performing for crowds who can’t get enough of Bollywood music. It’s easy to sense their zest for Bollywood tracks. But their urge to Turn to page 5

With the economic slowdown, the bunny had no choice but to take a second job

From page 3 reach new heights has led them to expand their horizons and creatively apply different dialects in their music. DNT performs in English, Hindi, Tamil, Konkani, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Russian, Spanish, German and Portuguese. There was one concert where they sang in 8 different languages in a single evening! It’s not uncommon for folks to come up to them and ask if they’re from Tamil Nadu or whether they are really Goans? Which makes both Denzil and Trisca burst out laughing. That is one of their biggest assets. They can make a Punjabi feel at home in Goa by singing in Punjabi, and do the same for folks from all over. The have a lot of fun entertaining audiences by dressing up in different regional costumes or in outfits that reflect particular moods. As Denzil says, “It’s all about presenting yourself.” Denzil, a self-taught musician, owes his growth to the different places he grew up in. He has lived in Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, and studied in a boarding
school in Goa. He sang for a choir and played the keyboard as a child. For her part, Trisca spent five years learning Indian Classical Music to hone her skills and this helped her develop a firm foundation with Hindi music. This was after she had already won several awards during her shows in school and colleges as a singer.
Besides eating, living, breathing and sleeping music, the two are married – but not to each other! Trisca’s husband is musician Aurvile Rodrigues and the couple has two kids. Denzil, too, is busy being a “superdad”. They make sure that they spend quality time with their families despite a grueling schedule. Denzil also has a background in Merchant Navy and Hotel Management. Trisca has a post graduate degree in counseling and she’s also worked with a special school that helped kids overcome various syndromes. The two finally broke away from their individual careers five years ago to devote themselves full time to music. “We get five calls now, everyday,” says Trisca, beaming widely. Besides Goa, DNT has
performed at other popular events and shows, including IFFI and a fashion show in Jaipur by designer Anchal Khanna. They also did the opening for the popular reality TV show, ‘Zor ka Jhatka’. The duo has benefitted from the unique texture of Trisca’s voice and Denzil’s skills with musical programming on the computer. The Hindi album “In Raho Mein” (In These Ways) includes a song from Trisca and Denzil’s been getting offers from Bombay to sell some of his musical creations. The duo were particularly pleased when Indian actor Neil Nitin Mukesh turned up for one of their concerts, and then posed with them for the camera. When asked for their most memorable moment, Trisca recalls their opening at the reality show ‘Zor Ka Jhatka’. When they were told the Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan was going to be there, Trisca and Denzil thought it was a trick. But when they stepped on the stage, they realized it was no prank. He was there standing right in front of them! No further proof was needed that the duo had made it. After all, they were sharing a stage with the King of Bollywood. 6 The Lowdown
The Lowdown Steven Gutkin, the venture’s chief mentor, is an award-winning journalist who has reported from some two dozen countries in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and the Americas. An international newsman for 25 years, Steven served as Bureau Chief with the Associated Press, the world’s largest news gathering organization, in Israel and Venezuela, as well as AP’s Chief of Southeast Asia Services in Singapore and Indonesia, and Senior Editor in the US. Steven covered the rise and fall of the Medellin and Cali cocaine cartels, rode into Kabul with a triumphant northern alliance and directed coverage of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza and Lebanon. The Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar was caught because he lingered on the phone with his son to answer Steven’s questions, and the cops traced the call. Steven covered the killing of Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, hurricanes in Puerto Rico and Mexico, the death of Yasser Arafat, a coup in Fiji and the rise to power of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Steven has also worked for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and CBS Radio. Marisha Dutt, Publisher and Editor of Goa Streets, is a former Marketing and Advertising Manager with The Wall Street Journal in Singapore. She took a break from work to raise her two boys in Indonesia, Israel and the United States. She has a Masters Degree in Marketing from The University of Strathclyde in the UK and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations. She was born in Assam, India and spent her early years on a tea plantation overlooking a pristine wildlife sanctuary. When she was 10, she and her family moved to Calcutta, where Marisha had the privilege of working alongside Mother Teresa. Later the family moved to Goa. Marisha and Steven were married 11 years ago on the Candolim beach. Deraj. A, Our Sales & Marketing Manager is something of a guru in the realms of market research, media planning and advertising. His work has taken him around India to places like Kerala, Gujarat, Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Deraj currently resides in Porvorim along with his wife and daughter. On off days, he enjoys a good game of carrom, and loves to watch cricket and movies of every kind. Ananda Krishna, Photographer, turned hopefully towards the camera early in life. With an abundance of knowledge and overwhelmed by his brilliant teachers in Light and Life Academy, Ooty, Ananda (last ‘a’ is silent) set out knowing the ‘how’s’ but not the ‘why’s’ of a photograph. It took a good amount of drifting on the road and dabbling with shooting advertisements, a film, weddings, events, exhibitions, copywriting and even selling booze to finally understand where the WHY really matters for him – photojournalism. Nilesh Shetgaonkar, Administrative Assistant, is a happy-go-lucky Morjim native who prides himself on living life to the fullest. He spent seven years in Dubai and loves football, cricket and trivia. Radhika Naik, Marketing Executive. A Mapusa resident, Radhika enjoys siestas and, when awake, spending time with family. She was always a big fan of the news and is thrilled to be part of that world today. Music with a slow tempo is her favourite playlist. Anand Pednekar, This Goan-born lover of music and reading heads the distribution and circulation team while also making calls lending a hand in sales and marketing. Anand enjoys the laid-back life style, and says his aim in life is to be helpful and good. Trust us. He is. Krishna S. Halankar, An integral member of the distribution and collection team, Krishna enjoys music, driving and to everyone’s surprise likes to shake a leg, too. When asked about his favourite drive, he says nothing beats the good ol’ drive from Goa to Mumbai. Vijay Gadekar, Distribution Team. Aside from being very handy in all things mechanical, Vijay is a big fan of football with an equal passion for quality beach time.
Welcome to the Easter Edition of Goa Streets! It’s a season of hope and renewal, two areas that go exceedingly well with the Goan spirit! In addition to our cover story on a Goan Easter, we’d like to draw your attention to our thoughtful piece on this month’s elections. As usual, our story takes a step back and tells you “what it all means”. In the weeks before the vote, we wrote quite a few stories on the elections, and we hope that our coverage has contributed to a deeper understanding of what’s at stake in this historic vote (it’s being called the largest democratic electoral exercise in the history of humanity).
In addition to our fun-to-read stories on the terrific Bollywood band DNT and our sassy interview with Chef Soumyen Chakraborthy, please check out our piece on 13-year-old swimming prodigy Xavier Michael D’Souza. He’s in need of some serious backing, and we hope our story will help him find it! These pages offer an eclectic mix of politics, entertainment, sports, arts and fashion. Don’t miss Ethel Da Costa’s interview with fashion guru Ramesh Dembla, our story on the debut novel of Yasmeen Premji, wife of billionaire Azim Premji, or our piece on the hot new trend of seniors moving into luxury developments (away from the kids). Goa Streets takes this opportunity to wish all our readers a very Happy Easter!
Before we depart, we want to share the note Streets’ Steven Gutkin posted on Facebook after news broke of the death of the great writer Gabriel García Márquez. From Steven: I met Gabriel García Márquez in Bogota in the early 1990’s, a turbulent period in Colombia when the drug and guerrilla wars were in full swing. I brought a copy of ‘Love In The Time of Cholera’, and when I told him I wanted it signed for my Jewish mother who loves his work, he said, “Las Yiddishe mamas, mis mejores aficionadas” - “The Yiddishe mamas (I was impressed he knew the term), my best fans.” He asked me my mother’s name and then drew a flower in my book, writing, “Mi adorada Anita, aqui te va esta flor en los verdaderos tiempos del colera: estos” - “My adored Anita, here this flower comes to you in the true times of cholera: these.” The book, with its melancholy, floral inscription, remains with my mother to this day, a prized possession. isclaimer – This is not a restaurant review. The owner didn’t pick up my tab at the end of the meal nor did one dine there anonymously with the intention of critiquing the eatery. But my friends (Sue and Nathan Cope) and I were seriously impressed when our waiter asked whether we wanted the order of medium rare steak “to lean more towards the rare or medium side?”, followed with “on a scale of 1 to 10, how spicy would you like your beef?” The three of us have travelled to the far-flung corners of the world and eaten in several Michelin star establishments, and even there we did not encounter such incredible waiterly precision. So when our food order (blue cheese soufflé, fillet steak with blue cheese sauce, coconut-crusted fish with Malibu rum and beef paprika) surpassed the heightened expectations brought on by the stellar service, I decided it was time to pick the brains of the man under the toque (chef’s hat). Enter Calcutta born Soumyen Chakraborthy, owner of Chef Soumyen Kitchen in Calangute. He has very nonBengali eating habits, for he doesn’t eat beef and dislikes fish – this may amount to blasphemy in some Calcutta homes. “I grew up near the Bihar border so my favourite meals are simple vegetarian fare like rajma chawal (red kidney beans with rice) and sattu (uncooked gram flour mixed with onion and spices). My mouth is salivating just talking about them!” We are ensconced in his office inside the
restaurant which is painted in sunflower yellow, with burnt orange chairs and maroon satin runners against white tablecloths. Wincing at the last choice, I boldly voice my disapproval and he surprises me with “you’re absolutely right but my patrons prefer the clash of colours.” Hailing from an army background, he grew up wanting to be an air force pilot. Alas Chakraborthy senior put his foot down and so “I sulked for a year by taking off on a backpacking journey in the hills.” Returning still disillusioned, he took a crash course in food service and ended up at the ITC Hotel in Calcutta. “And that’s where my life changed.” The higher-ups felt he was destined for a gastronomic career and convinced him to enrol at the renowned Dadar Catering College in Bombay. By 1992, he was playing a prominent role in the kitchens of the Taj Gateway Hotel. All of a sudden, Soumyen started feeling restless and bravely decided to chuck it all to work as
senior chef on the British luxury liner P & O. “Unless you travel, you will never learn anything new”, he states emphatically. True to form, some years down the road, a telephonic offer to start a restaurant from ex-cooking buddy Virendra Singh (currently running A Reverie) tempted him to reinvent himself in Goa and set up After Eight (now operating as After Seven). In 2007, Soumyen felt it was time to throw caution to the wind again by venturing out on his own, even though he was sternly advised to bide his time. “My wife Rajrupa is the only one who stood by me and my success today is largely due to her support.” Returning to the scene of the crime, Soumyen cites some of the popular dishes. Chicken prepared with three
secret sauces, covered with cheese and then gratinated, Rum Lemon Prawns and the piece de resistance for moi, Hot Chocolate and Brandy Soufflé – truly quality cellulite folks. “I’ve tried introducing new items on the menu but the regulars get upset with me so my only option is to play around with the sauces and make subtle changes. But my real dream is to have a place with cuisine from the four corners of India: East – Assam, Calcutta; North - Punjab, Haryana; West – Konkan belt; and South – Tamil Naad. It would then be up to the guests to combine the regions in any way they fancy, eg appams (rice flour pancakes from the South) with butter chicken from the North. But what if it turns out to be unappetising, I ask cheekily. “It can’t and won’t; I believe in myself and I know I can make it work!” On a personal front, given a choice, he would opt for daal (lentils) with naan any day of the week. I probe him for his favourite dining venues; “Delhi Darbar and Moti Mahal for North Indian fare and Florentine for their chicken cafreal. Unfortunately, I don’t get a chance to try the new spots because they all close for the season just when my time frees up as we shut from April to October as well.” This year, Soumyen has plans to teach a course in continental cooking during his time off, which will enable students “to open a small 20-seater eating joint of their own - that’s my guarantee.” So what’s the real secret of his success? “First, it’s about how you behave with and treat people. I like to share the decision-making process with my staff and work with them at a horizontal level, not vertical.” He informs me that the restaurant foots the air travel bill when some of the sous chefs go on a family holiday. “They’ve been with me for over 15 years and are lovely lads.” Second, Chef S feels that the food should talk to you – “I believe in catering to the individual taste. Each dish should be personalized depending on the patrons’ perception and that’s why I’ve trained the staff to ask pertinent questions. For example, I think a medium rare steak should be more on the rare side.” All this talk of food glorious food has set off serious hunger pangs so I wrap up. Chef Soumyen leaves me with a wide smile and a healthy recipe – “Eat at least one raw beetroot everyday. It will leave you feeling fresh.” Thanks for the tip Chef! Goa’s Choice Who will it be? W
hat’s a Goan to do if she’s happy with the BJP’s performance here at home but can’t stand the prospect of Narendra Modi as prime minister? Or if he’s very keen on a local Congress candidate but thinks the BJP is India’s best hope nationally? We won’t know the election results until May 16, but from the look of things, Congress in Goa, as in the rest of India, has a lot more to worry about than does the BJP. Despite all the local electoral intrigue (and there was a lot of it), in the end Goans understood their vote for our state’s two Lok Sabha representatives was more of a national referendum than a local choice. That’s why the BJP - in Goa and throughout India - has good reason to be optimistic, given the millions of indications that things are going their way. “Talk within the Congress office is that cracks are already beginning to emerge with the Congress camp in anticipation of defeat. The party president and the North Goa candidate have begun to blame each other,” said Prakash Sakhalkar, who runs a business right outside the Congress office. I did a small, unscientific poll the other day, asking average folks I met on the street if they’d ever heard of 2002 riots in Gujarat, for which Modi has come under so much criticism. I was surprised at the number of people who simply had never heard about the deadly events, or the allegations against Modi that he was, at the least, complicit in them. It struck me that Congress’ best hope for salvaging these elections – shouting out loud and clear the reservations about Modi – had been royally squandered. All that said, Congress does stand a very real chance of winning at least one of the state’s Lok Sabha seats, with a good number of voters not too thrilled about the performance of the current BJP government in Goa and with a strong candidate in South Goa named Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. There’s been an almost eerie silence about Goans’ political choices both during and after these elections. A silent vote is one which ideally can go anywhere, but it’s often one that goes against the ruling dispensation. Is it a guilty silence, where the people abandoned the BJP but do not want to be vocal about it for fear of a backlash or because they are guilty about accepting
money in the past? Or are they silent because they’re being cautious about celebrating too early? Or have they simply grown wiser and keeping their cards close to their chest? With neither of the two main parties exuding confidence, several theories are doing the rounds. The two most popular ones are that BJP will wrest both seats aided by divided opponents or that the Congress will retain the South Goa seat, while the BJP retains the North. Common to both the theories is that the BJP will retain the Hindu-dominated North seat for a fourth successive election, riding on the back of an uninspiring Congress candidate. It’s telling that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar spent most of his time campaigning in South Goa, especially Salcete. The party has consciously kept Modi out of the discourse and instead chose to focus on the development Parrikar can offer. Despite the vote’s national overtones, the BJP views the election as a referendum on Parrikar’s two-year-old government. Foremost among the BJP’s tricks is uniting all the non-Congress MLAs and portraying their leaders as being with the BJP. However, many Salcete voters are skeptical about that strategy. “When the local MLA says to vote for one party and the local parish priest says to specifically vote for any party but that, who do you think the people will listen to?” said Savio Rebello a resident of Navelim that is the hotbed of a war between the BJP, the Congress and the former legislator of the area, Churchill Alemão. (Answer to the question: The priest.) “While it’s difficult to say what the mood is, it is almost certain that the national elections are a different ball game than the local ones. People who have voted for a non-Congress MLA in the state elections will turn back and vote for the Congress this time,” Rebello added.

What will work in the BJP’s favour in the south is that the predominantly Hindu areas of Marcaim, Siroda, Ponda and Sanvordem seem sure to vote predominantly for the party, on account of the shrill polarization of the debate in South Goa. “Calling out to Catholics to vote for a secular candidate works both ways. It also drives Hindus to vote for the BJP. Such a strategy of the Congress could backfire,” said Deepak Bhandigare, a local journalist. If the BJP wins both seats, it’s likely give the government an aura of invincibility. That could help the government go full steam ahead with the controversial proposed Mopa Airport in the North as well as other projects. (The Mopa airport was a major election issue in the South, where many are opposed). On the other hand, losing one or both Lok Sabha seats will surely dent the Parrikar government’s confidence and ability to push its agenda. An interesting question is what will be the fate of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). From the look of it, the party’s candidate in the North will do much better than the one in the South, with the latter -- Swati
Kerkar-- even expected to lose the deposit she paid to register as a candidate (it’s forfeited if you don’t get enough votes). In the North, however, backed by a past political life as well as some well known activism, Dr. Dattaram Desai can also bank on an uninspiring Congress campaign. It’s clear that a good number of persons disgruntled with the both BJP and the Congress voted for the AAP. However, in the South Swati Kerkar’s failure to make inroads has a lot to do with Congress fielding Reginaldo, who is seen as young, energetic and clean. Here’s how one local newspaper editor put it: “It wasn’t as if the Congress was asking the electorate to vote for a corrupt candidate in the name of secularism.” But has the Goan voter really changed? AAP member and sympathiser Samir Kelekar spoke of two voters, a Catholic from Davorlim who voted for Congress just because that’s what his whole neighbourhood did, and another in Margao who said he voted for BJP “because Modi represents his religion.” “The above are two typical examples of how masses vote. It is going to take a herculean task to convince them of a party like AAP,” Kelekar surmised.

fter the pain, comes the pleasure! Two days after Catholics in Goa mourn the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in their most solemn holiday of the year, they’ll be digging into succulent slices of turkey or roast suckling pigs to celebrate His resurrection. This is the joy of Easter, the promise of renewal. It all starts after the carnival when Lent – commemorating the 40 days Jesus spent doing penance in the desert – kicks in. Those 40 days when you’re not supposed to drink alcohol or eat fancy foods, concludes with Easter celebrations after the Holy Week. With Friday being the Good Friday holiday, it’s going to be one long celebratory weekend for those holidaying in Goa, though many Goans themselves will only start partying after attending Easter Mass on Sunday. As with other Christian festivals in Goa, there will be at least two Easters celebrated here - one for Goans and another for tourists. And then a few days later, visiting Russians (yes, the tourist high season is ending, but you’d be surprised at how many Russians are still here) will celebrate their own Easter, as per the Orthodox calendar. So how are Goans celebrating Easter this year? Margaret, a housewife from Candolim, says she will visit relatives and bring them sweets, but lunch will be at home. After that, the whole family might go out in the evening for a community event. The sweets will include Easter eggs and a selection of Goan Easter favourites. Anybody can give Easter eggs or receive them, not just Christians. With Goa an undisputed party spot cutting across religions, many nonChristians have also taken to giving gifts of Easter eggs, which are symbolic of rebirth. Kamal, a hotelier based in Calangute, says he has made it an annual tradition to present Easter eggs to all his close pals. “It’s a very cool way to win friends
and influence people,” he grins, much like giving Christmas presents. Many of the resorts also present their guests with complimentary Easter eggs. Another Goan tradition is gifting hot-cross buns. While many nowadays go in for the fancy stuff like blueberry cakes, Goan favourites like bebinca and ‘bolo sans rival’ are still preferred by the tradition-minded Goans, and many of the shelves in bakery shops will be groaning under the weight of these overstocked goodies. A new trend is the hosting of events like Easter eggs painting contests. Pastry Cottage at Campal in Panjim is holding one on Easter day, but it’s only for children. But if you’re an adult, stay in the Socorro area, and if you want to get into the Goan Easter spirit, you could try the community event ‘Easter Parade 2014’ organized by the Socorro parish. It’s going to be a grand celebration of Goan culture featuring local talent, dances and mimicry, with a life-sized Easter egg – but don’t expect any pretty bunnies to step out of it. There will also be a unique display of ‘Easter fruits and flowers’ – mangoes, cashews, jackfruits, pineapples, jambul, karandas and bougainvilleas. Last year many of the local women brought in home-made Goan delicacies which were then distributed free. Revival of the old generous Goan spirit! A lot of the fun though will start as the sun starts going down and the daytime heat evaporates. That’s when the music begins as Goa gets into the party mood. Just about every party hotspot will have an Easter event, while most Goan clubs will also be hosting their traditional Easter bashes, which are semi-formal events. Surprisingly, many Goan Catholics – especially men – observe the 40 days of Lent by taking a break from drinking their daily pegs. So on Easter day there is always the danger of them hitting the bottle back with a vengeance, after of course, greeting their fellow Goans with a hug and a kiss on both cheeks, murmuring “Christ has risen!” Many upper crust Goans will be heading to the five-star resorts for the Easter brunch. The Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt and the Marriott are particular favourites for Easter brunch. Many of the five stars promise memorable experiences with sumptuous feasts and fun and games for the little ones. Several of the nightclubs will be hosting Easter bashes as well, including some pool parties and lots of live music. If you’re in Panjim you could try the Easter Brunch Feast at Chilli n Spice at Hotel Fidalgo with live music and unlimited drinks. Besides their signature dishes, they’re also promising some local Goan Easter favourites. Your regular Goan folk, to be sure, will be finding their way – dressed in all their Easter finery – to the neighbourhood dance floors. In Verna it will be Blueberry Hills. Further south it will be the Rosary grounds in Navelim. Alva Mar banquet lawns in Parra will also be holding an Easter ball, in addition to all the other hundreds of Easter parties throughout Goa. Happy Easter everyone!

Days of Gold & Sepia: Yasmeen Premji’s Debut Novel Did I mention she’s married to Azim Premji, India’s 4th richest man? By Perin Ilavia
I
t may not be politically correct to even ask the question. But considering the size of her bank account, I think it’s a fair one: Would anyone be interested in reading Yasmeen Premji’s debut novel if she didn’t happen to be married to Azim Premji, India’s 4th richest man according to Forbes? Surprisingly, I believe the answer is yes. ‘Days of Gold & Sepia’, published late last year, relates the rags-toriches saga of Lalljee Lakha, who rises from being an orphaned goatherd in the deserts of Kutch to become Bombay’s “Cotton King”. The story is developed against the backdrop of a tumultuous century, related with an acute sensitivity to the nuances of human suffering and emotion. The sweeping narrative’s epic
characters include freedom fighters, merchants, princes, maharajas, soothsayers, soldiers of the British Raj, pirates and courtesans. Lalljee is a man of great courage and character, and his is a story of the discovery of life, the agony of impossible love and of immense personal integrity. It grips you from start to finish. Yasmeen read excerpts from ‘Days of Gold & Sepia’ at a well-attended April 3 reading at the Literati Bookshop and Café in Calangute. Perhaps as extraordinary as the book itself is the fact that it took her over 20 years to write it, mostly on loose scraps of paper. A great deal of research went into the historical facts, and she visited Kutch to get the feel of the salt and sand. “As a first time novelist I feel fantastic. It was a book I had to write and I’m pleased that people read it and enjoy. It gives me lot of satisfaction”, Yasmeen says. For me, the stunning integrity at the heart of the novel was not surprising, given what the Premjis themselves stand for. Goa Streets recently included Azim Premji as Number 2 on a list of the “20 Most Successful Indians Alive Today”. And not just because he’s one of the richest men in the world (he’s chairman of the software company Wipro Limited), but because he and his wife are committed to making

From page 15 the world a better place. The Premjis have already given away 25 percent of their wealth to charity, and the Azim Premji Foundation works tirelessly to raise up primary education in rural India. Azim, 69, is the first Indian and third non-American to sign up for Giving Pledge, an initiative led by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett to encourage the world’s richest people to use their wealth for the betterment of humanity. Yasmeen wanted to be a writer at the age of 10. Her first short story was published under a pseudonym just before she turned 18. “It was stylish in those days to write under pseudonyms. Later I published a few under my name”, she explains. She grew up in Bombay and earned a bachelors degree in psychology from St. Xaviers College and a Masters degree in Psychology from Smith College, Massachusetts (USA). In the early 70s, she worked as a Personnel Supervisor with Esso Inc and later got a diploma in interior design. For many years she served as a senior editor at the design magazine ‘Inside Outside’. Despite her vast wealth, she comes off as an unassuming person, and she stays away from the media. She and her husband, parents of two sons, reside in Bangalore. One of the most noteworthy aspects of ‘Days of Gold & Sepia’ is its haunting evocation of old Bombay, and its vivid depictions of the eventful period between India’s 1857 War for Independence and the freedom struggles of the early 20th century. But what gives the story its extraordinary emotional punch are the tales of love and tragedy, such as the drowning of Lalljee’s infant son in a bathtub he imported from Rome. With this novel, Yasmeen has stepped out of the shadows and into the limelight. And we're all better off because she did. 'Days of Gold & Sepia' is published by Harper Collins.

Keeping it Simple He is the toast of Bangalore’s Page 3. Tabloid fodder on a Saturday night. Work hard, party harder Designer Ramesh Dembla on why it is important to follow the heart to fulfill your aspirations, in a quick tete a tete with Goa’s fashion and lifestyle writer, ETHEL DA COSTA.
H
is clothes speak of opulence and grandeur. Not just on the ramp, but off the arc lights as well. His signature clothing finds many a cozy space in the wardrobes of the rich, the famous and the party animal in the country and abroad. His clientele ranges from film personalities to the young corporate honcho to NRIs. His ramp shows boast of show-stoppers to the likes of Bollywood actors Akshay Kumar, Niel Nitin Mukesh, Madhawan, Tusshar Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Zarine Khan, Sophie Choudury, Riya Sen, to name a few. At a recent showing in Bangalore, his front row spotted celebrities like Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh. Besides the celebrity pop-up, I’m curious to know the designer behind the label `Krishna Dembla’, because the man minus the paparazzi is a pretty chilled out guy next door. What then defines Ramesh Dembla and his work? Because contradictory to the opulence, the designer advises `keep it simple.’
Excerpts of my interview: ED: What are the pre-requisites of a good, creative, successful designer? RD: According to me, someone who follows his/her heart and doesn’t get influenced by predictions (made by anyone portraying to be part of the fashion industry and so called fashion critics), will definitely have a collection for people to look for. At the same time if a person can retain the look of the design from the time it’s conceived on paper till it’s executed, surely it’s a good designer. I have seen lots of young designers show something excellent on paper /sketches, but when they are made they look so different. I would say failure is success delayed, so never give up. ED: The fashion world is as volatile, as it is dynamically creative. How do you keep abreast of trends? RD: My clothes speak of opulence and grandeur. The USP lies in the fact that the clothes are also a big hit off the ramp as well. ED: What is your own style statement? What defines the label: Krishna Dembla? RD: Like I mentioned, my collection is elegant, modern but not conventional. The label `Krishna Dembla’ is synonymous with gowns and dresses
which are elegant and ethereal with a hint of seduction. I think the transparent layering with ghagras, and sarees have also been known to be elegant, trendy with minimal embroidery.
ED: Do you think Goa is coming of age in fashion. What is needed to make it professional, and hence into a steady business? RD: Goa is getting a lot of fashion coming in. However, just one thing, when designers come to showcase their collection, let the party begin after the show. ED: Suggest five trends that are here to stay in 2014 RD: Some things which will stay forever are: For Men: 1) a good fit denim trouser 2) a white and a black shirt
3) a good fit black trousers 4) a blazer and since men also need to look suave, metro sexual, or whatever term you use, please carry some good hair and face products For Women: 1) LBD. Little Black Dress. Length doesn’t matter, comfort does. 2) Saree. According to me for every Indian woman, it is a must-have. 3) Denim. Skirt or Jeans. Depends on comfort level and body size 4) A White or Black shirt or a top ED: You will be showing in Goa this Easter. What can fashion lovers look forward to your forthcoming fashion show at Baga? RD: My collection is called FUCHSIA SHINE. Think PINK. One is immediately reminded of feminine forms. This is a tribute to women. In these troubled times where women have begun questioning their basic existence in a country addressed as Mother Land, the collection is a tribute to the female spirit, drawing inspiration from the nation’s women who have stood strong like a backbone of this country since time immemorial. With hues of pink and purple that have been crafted and designed in the label’s signature style, that of layers and embellishments, this collection will celebrate womanhood. PRESS UPDATE The FINAL FINALE is finally here....On April 20, luck and talent will favour the brilliant.... Presenting SOUL SHINE by Bangalore’s Celebrity Designer Ramesh Dembla at Bottlebay, on April 20. An evening of glamour, shine and winning smiles to culminate the month long hunt for Goa’s Kingfisher Ultra Fashion Guru 2014 and Rockland Dark Mega Model 2014.
