PROBLEM STATEMENT PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED
With the ongoing Densification and Technological Upgradation of city Infrastructure the street is bound to witness increased traffic and human loads.
Bhopal’s Urban-scapes are flooded with parked and moving vehicles. Pedestrian Friendly Streets and Walkable Zones have became a premium in the city.
Urban Waste is carried to lakes through unmaintained and Encroached Nallahs . This is a waste of Urban Ecological resources and a threat to ‘A City of Lakes’ Identity.

1. Unfriendly Pedestrian walkways • No speed regulatory mechanisms • No Cycle track • Undefined walkways. • Inadequate street lighting • No street furniture or resting spaces 2. Urban Design • Diminishing Green Cover • Lack of a holistic City image through Façade Design Guidelines, Signage's, etc. • Disconnected Nodes of attraction • GTB Complex Court used as parking 3. Vehicular Movement: • Lane marking only in Patches • Median available only in a Patch • Lack of Information signage's

PROBLEM STATEMENT (Intersection At Rangmahal) Being at the Nodal junction of Pedestrian and Vehicular movements of New Market. The Junction is heavily crowded. Most of the usable space is Asphalt or parking, rendering Pedestrians UNSAFE. With the upcoming Overhead Metro line, this becomes a Sensitive zone.
UTTIPEC’s Street Design Guidelines strictly suggests to remove slip-roads for intersections of roads below 30m and Create Pedestrian-centric systems. For roads above 30m the maximum turning radius is 12m(Suggested=3m) (Source : Pg46-49, STREET DESIGN GUIDELINES, UTTIPEC)
Undefined Zones Undefined zones at the street had resulted in chaos and Disturbed Pedestrian and Vehicular movements.
A Free Left Turn at traffic intersection makes pedestrian movement very risky: •
Conflicted Zone of Hawkers and AutoRikshaws, resulting in Pedestrian movement on Carriageways pose a Safety Issue.
Unorganised Zones (Source : STREET DESIGN GUIDELINES, UTTIPEC)
Pedestrian can not look at the oncoming vehicle • Vehicles don’t reduce speeds.
What is SMART?
URBAN STATEMENT
Smart is not an Acronym for some 5th Generation Technology. In plain dictionary terms Smart is ‘INTELLIGENT and INDEPENDENT’. A layer of IoT Technology (Internet of Things) over the old school design philosophy of Building Sensibly, Responsibly, and Contextually, we can make our City, Personalised for Us. Let’s Take a SMART approach to Design a SMART STREET within a SMART CITY.

Is actually SMART
Although A Smart Electric Pole with Solar Panels everywhere looks Smart, IT ISN’T. • • • •

Business
A smart city can be considered a “Super-system” of interconnected city subsystems
This Design Solution goes ahead without getting into the details of How IoT works, since its an added layer to the solution.
Cultural
Un-ecological Battery required to store energy. Dust within City reduces performance. Special Maintenance required. Heavy Solar Panels fill up an already filled URBAN skyline.
The street stretch from Rang Mahal to Palash Hotel, connects Palash Hotel, Youth Hostel, Dushehra Maidan to New Market, the Commercial centre of the city.
With proposed High-Rise Complex design on the 3.5 Acre land on the street, the proposed design integrates the Socio-Cultural functions in the vicinity to New Market’s Commercial loop.
GOAL 1: MOBILITY AND ACCCESSIBILITY
GOAL 2: SAFETY AND COMFORT
GOAL 3: ECOLOGY
Maximum number of people should be able to move fast, safely and conveniently through the city.
Make streets safe clean and walkable, create climate sensitive design.
Reduce impact on the natural environment; and Reduce pressure on built infrastructure.
PROPOSED SOLUTION “Bhopal should continue to build on its green image and reflect principles of Sustainability through holistic planning, mixdensity development and Green-space conservation.” -Smart City Bhopal, Pg16/92
Smart City Bhopal Vision : • 24x7 city with round-the-clock activities. • live-work-play-learn-shop • Walkable city with Pedestrian Friendly Pathways and dedicated cycle tracks • Transit Oriented Development • Intelligent street lighting • Encourage walk to work • Incorporate sustainable services Hawker Zone At Intersection

INTERSECTION AT RANGMAHAL New Market attracts thousands of shoppers from the entire city.
A Seamless Pedestrian connection is made by introducing an elongated “Only Pedestrian” timer stop at the Junction Traffic Signal.
Free Left Space reserved for vehicles is given back to Pedestrian Experience and Informal Haat is redefined with Public amenities.
1
EXISTING
Large Intersections are difficult for Pedestrians and Motorists to manage. The idea is to Maximise sight distance, Reduce vehicle speeds to match sight distance, instead of enlarging the Intersection or removing obstructions. 1. Free lefts create unsafe, high-speed turns.

2. Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI) are used to give pedestrians a head start entering the crosswalk. Pedestrian safety islands are added and Free leftturn is removed. 3. Bicyclists are given a separate track intersection, avoiding mixing of zones and restricted turns making the turns safer for Bicyclists.

5. Left and Right turns aren’t banned, They are timed with regular Transit Priority. 6. Bus Stop is moved ahead to avoid clutter at Junction

STREET SECTION
Walkways are Public spaces that act as front steps to the City, activating Streets socially and economically. Safe, Accessible, Lively and Well Maintained walkways enhance Public Health and Maximise Social capital.
A Multi-Purpose Zone houses Crucial Street components, in a single Zone leaving a Clutter Free Pedestrian Layout. E.g. BUS STOP, Auto Stands, Drop Offs, Green Dividers, It acts as a customizable Buffer zone for Various City Utilities, leaving an Unobstructed Pedestrian Zone. E.g. Street Lamps, Street Signage,

HAWKER ZONE AT INTERSECTION
Hawkers or “micro-entrepreneurs” provide a wide variety of services and amenities to people, at convenient locations – with negligible investment and infrastructural costs. Hawkers are given designated space within the road Right-of-Way, so that they don’t occupy the Minimum Clear 1.8 M Pedestrian Walking Zone.

PLAZA & O.A.T.
The Street Reforms to a Shopping Street Seamlessly joining ‘The Open Court’ to ‘The Open Air Theatre’. The O.A.T. forms the Node for Cultural Linkage between the Complex, Street and existing Temples. The Pedestrian movement is redirected from the Temples to Palash Hotel, Urdu Bhavan.
The Author is Hopeful that in the upcoming Master Plan for Smart City Bhopal, this Street can be connected to the Shyamla Hills Road by a Pedestrian Bridge.
The connecting Footpath Proudly wears MadhyaPradesh’s Tribal ‘Gond Art’ pattern.
