Coaching Staff JOHN WEAVER

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Appalachian State, 1971 29th year Coach Weaver is in his 29th season as the director of the women’s track and cross country program and in his15th season as the director of both the women’s and men’s programs. Weaver assumed the duties of directing both programs in the Fall of 1995. A 1971 graduate of Appalachian in Biology, Weaver returned in 1979 to assist in the men’s program while earning his Masters in Biology. During his three-year tenure as the men’s assistant, he trained two NCAA qualifiers and seven Southern Conference champions. Weaver took over the full-time coaching duties for the women’s program in 1982. Since that time, the program including cross country, indoor track and outdoor track has produced a NCAA Division I National Champion in the 1500m twice, 9 NCAA Division I All-Americans with 23 All-American performances, 17 NCAA Division I Qualifiers,

254 Southern Conference individual champion performances, 730 All-Conference performances, 29 conference MVP athletes, 40 conference team championships, 25 conference coach-of-the-year honors, 11 conference freshmen-of-the-year honors and a Southeast Region Coach-of-the-Year honor twice. Since 2003, the NCAA has begun competition in track on a Region level. The Mountaineers have sent 51 athletes to Regional competition. After taking over the men’s program in 1995, the Mountaineers have produced two NCAA Division I All-Americans, four NCAA All-American performances, 11 Division I Qualifiers, 255 Southern Conference individual champion performances, 460 all-conference performances, 10 conference MVP athletes, 22 conference team championships, 12 coach-of-the-year honors and one Southeast Region Coach of the Year honor. The Mountaineers have sent 43 athletes to Regional competition. Appalachian has qualified 43 men and 51 women athletes to the East Region with 8 NCAA Championships qualifying performances coming out of the region for Appalachian. In 2004, Appalachian had its first East Region champion with a first place in the 100m dash for men. Coach Weaver has also worked as the Yosef Club Director (athletic fundraising arm of the ASU Foundation, Inc.) from 1982 to 1985. He has also taught classes in the Education and Physical Education departments of the University. A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Weaver graduated from Seventy-First High School in 1967. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1971 from Appalachian, returning to Fayetteville to teach Biology and eventually take over the cross country and track programs at Douglas Byrd High School in 1972. His cross country dual meet record over eight years was 71-11 and his teams won six conference titles while competing in four state meet championships. His track teams produced many individual conference and regional champions along with several state meet qualifiers. Currently, Coach Weaver coaches the sprinters, hurdlers, multi-event athletes and relays while overseeing all aspects of the program as its director. Coach Weaver served on the NCAA Division I Track and Cross Country Committee from September of 2006 until September of 2010. Each summer, Weaver directs the Grandfather Mountain Marathon, The Bear Road Race and two Cross Country Team Camps. Over 1000 athletes attend camp at Appalachian each summer. Coach Weaver is married to Cynthia Harmon of Lenoir, North Carolina and has two sons, Chase (23) a graduate of Appalachian and Jay (21), a student at Appalachian in his junior year.

Coaching Staff Michael Curcio

Head Cross Country/Distance Coach Appalachian State, 1987 15th year Mike Curcio is in his 15th year as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach, track and field distance coach, and recruiting coordinator at Appalachian State University. Curcio’s men’s cross country teams have been very successful during his tenure, as they have captured nine Southern Conference titles in the past 11 years, winning those crowns in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Since taking over the helm of the women’s cross country team in 2000, his teams have recorded five conference runner-up finishes and one title. In his 15 years, Curcio has coached, nine NCAA Qualifiers, eight NCAA Regional Qualifiers, one USATF Junior National Champion, 18 USATF Junior National Qualifiers, nine USTFCCCA all-Regional cross country performancers and seven Southern Conference Cross Country Freshman of the Year. In addition to those feats, Curcio has also coached 77 all-Southern Conference Cross Country performances and four Southern Conference Cross Country individual champions. While coaching the distance runners for ASU track and field, Curcio has coached 42 athletes to SoCon indoor and outdoor individual champion performances and 191 runners to all-conference indoor and outdoor performances. He has also coached two athletes to SoCon outdoor track and field MVP awards and one to a SoCon indoor track and field MVP award. Since arriving at ASU, he has helped the Mountaineers garner 17 indoor track and field championship titles and 16 outdoor track and field championship titles.

As athletic excellence is important, Curcio and his teams also strive for success in academics. Since being at ASU, Curcio has coached two NCAA post graduate scholarship award winners, one Southern Conference post graduate scholarship award winner, three Mrs. Brakefield award recipients, for an ASU senior student-athlete with the highest GPA, and 10 USTFCCCA academic all-Americans. For all of his efforts, in 2003 Curcio was named the USTCA Division I Men’s National Assistant Coach of the Year for Distance. He also has been recognized by the Southern Conference for his team’s impressive performances, being named the SoCon’s men’s cross country coach of the year nine times (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010). Before coming to Appalachian, Curcio served as an assistant at Florida State from 1988-1992. In the spring of 1993, he became an assistant at South Florida, where he helped build a fledgling track and field program, along with a nationally-ranked cross country program. The track women at USF won three conference titles in the first four years of the program’s existence. The men’s and women’s cross country teams were ranked as high as 12th and 21st in Division I during his tenure. Coach Curcio hails from Long Island, N.Y., where he attended Newfield High School before attending and competing for Appalachian State University. He was a three-time all-SoCon selection in track and still ranks fifth all-time in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:49.60. His 4x1500 meter relay team still holds the school record for that event.

Coaching Staff April Smith

Throws Coach Doane College, 2000 Ninth year April Smith is in her ninth year as the throws coach at Appalachian State University and is primarily responsible for the throws programs, along with the strength training of the track and field athletes. Since starting at Appalachian, Smith has coached 22 regional qualifiers, four national qualifiers in the shot put, one national qualifier in the hammer and one athlete that met an Olympic trial standard of 63-1 in the shot put in June of 2007. She has also coached 49 conference champions and 91 all-SoCon athletes in the shot put, discus, hammer, javelin and weight throw events. While at ASU, she has also been a part of the Mountaineers tradition of winning the Southern Conference title in both men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor championships, with the last title coming with the men’s team at the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships to cap off the 2009-10 Triple Crown. For her tireless efforts in 2006, Smith was honored with the Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year Award for the NCAA. Smith came to ASU in January of 2002 from Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where she served as a graduate assistant. While at Chadron, she coached her first Division-II all-American during her first year of coaching.

In addition to coaching experience, Smith also has 13 years of competition experience in the shot put, discus, javelin, hammer and weight throws. In college, she was a three- time NAIA National Champion and a nine-time all-American. She was also named the Nebraska State College Athlete of the Year and the Doane College women of the year in 2000. Smith earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education with an emphasis on sports management, and she completed her master’s degree at Appalachian State in 2006. Prior to transferring from the University of Kansas to Doane College in 1998, Smith was a Big 12 all-Conference performer, a Jayhawk scholar athlete, Jayhawk Freshman of the Year and made the Big 12 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Her competition experience also extends internationally. She has competed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. She trained under the direction of Yuriy Syedikh and Natalya Lisovskaya, the current world record holders in the men’s hammer throw and the women’s shot put. Smith is married to former ASU throws legend Bob Smith, and they have a seven year-old son, Andrew, and a four year-old son, Derek.

Damion McLean

Jump/Sprints/Strength and Conditioning Coach Appalachian, 2002 Eighth year In his eighth year as a coach, Damion McLean brings a wealth of experience and knowledge about Southern Conference track and field to his position. A 2002 graduate of Appalachian, McLean was a conference champion in the long jump in both indoor and outdoor track and field during his collegiate career and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He ranks third on Appalachian’s outdoor all-time list in the long jump with a mark of 25-1 and fifth on the indoor all-time list in the same event with a mark of 24-7. His personal best jump is 25-8. The 4x300m team which McLean competed on still holds the indoor record in that event. While at Appalachian, he also competed in the triple jump, high jump, 100m dash and on the 4x100m relay team. In the past seven years, McLean has produced 31 SoCon Champions, 76 all-Conference performances, four SoCon MVP’s, 20 Regional standard performances, 13 NCAA qualifying performances, five NCAA qualifiers, eight USATF Championship and Olympic qualifiers, ASU record holders in the indoor long jump (Vonteena Knotts, 20’ 10.50”), triple jump (Ronda White, 44’ 2”) and SoCon Outdoor record holder in triple jump (Danielle Thorpe, 43’ 2.25”). In 2008, McLean coached the USATF Indoor Masters long jump

champion, John Clifford, who was in the 65 and up division. The strength program for ASU has been under the tutelage of McLean as well. He maintains a coaching persepective with the athletes in the weight room and builds workouts purtaining to what will be most beneficial for the athletes. During his fifth season, McLean served as an undergraduate assistant (sprints/hurdles & jumps) for the Mountaineers. He graduated form ASU in May of 2002 and worked in advertising before returning to Boone to coach. He is a member of the USATF & USTFCCC Associations, USATF Level 2 certification in the jumps and attended the Emerging Elite Coaches Clinic at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego, CA. The Lincolnton, N.C. native holds a degree in Communication, advertising with a minor in business. He also has a daughter (Bryanna, 12). McLean still has been competing on an individual basis for the past couple of years. During this time, he has qualified for USATF Championships and the 2008 Olympic Trials. Following the 2008 indoor season, he finished with the twelfth-best mark in the country before suffering an injury during the outdoor season.

Coaching Staff David Ward

Pole Vault Coach Appalachian State, 1979 Eighth year Coach David Ward is a 1979 graduate of Appalachian, where he was a six-time all-Southern Conference performer in the pole vault. While at ASU, he was the indoor and outdoor record holder, posting performances of 15-6’ indoor and 16-2’ outdooor as well as team MVP and team captain. Ward also attended Santa Fe Junior College, where he was a national finalist in the indoor and outdoor junior college national championships in 1976. He graduated from Olympic High School in Charlotte, N.C. in 1974 and was the conference, regional and state champion in the pole vault and set the North Carolina High School record of 15 feet. Coach Ward spent 11 years as a high school track, cross country and strength and conditioning coach. He has coached individual state champions in both indoor and outdoor track and cross country; in addition to coaching conference, regional and state championship teams in cross country and conference championship teams in track. Ward has hosted National Strength and Conditioning Association (NCSA) Clinics, and has been a presenter at numerous track and field, strength training and physical education workshops and clinics. He has directed regional, state and open track meets, organized Charlotte Latin and Tailwind Track Clubs, served as a USA Certified Track Official at NCAA National Championship Meets and has earned USA Track and Field Level I Coaching Certification. He has also published articles related to strength and conditioning topics. After joining the track staff at Appalachian as a pole vault coach in the fall of 2003, Coach Ward has coached 11 Southern Conference champions, 20 Indoor all-Southern Conference performers, 23 outdoor all-Southern Conference performers, an indoor national finalist and an outdoor regional finalist. New indoor and outdoor ASU records were also established in the women’s vault in 2004. Ward is a physical education teacher and resides in Boone with his wife Dawn, a nurse at Watauga Medical Center. They have three daughters Joy, Jennifer and Julie. The Ward family is actively involved in the community, school and helps direct a Christian ministry for students.

James Snyder

Graduate Assistant George Mason, 2010 First year James Snyder is in his first year as a graduate assistant coach working primarily with Appalachian men’s and women’s distance runners. He is a magna cum laude graduate in Exercise Science from George Mason University, where he was a multiple letterwinner for the Patriot’s cross country and track and field prgrams. James is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from ASU and is responsible for the design and implementation of resistance training programs for the cross country teams. He also coordinates on-campus recruiting. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the, and he completed an internship with the United States Olympic Committee in Lake Placid, New York this past winter. James has spent his past two summers working for ZAP Fitness, a Team USA Distance Running Training Center based in Blowing Rock.

Gary Murphy

High Jump Coach Appalachian State, 1976 Fourth year Gary Murphy is in his fourth year as the high jump coach at Appalachian State. He is a retired elementary physical education teacher that has coached at the high school and middle school level, along with coaching during his years in graduate school. At Watauga High School, he helped to lead the track and field team to great success. His team’s finished first five times and runner-up twice, in the Northwestern 4A Conference during his seven-year tenure and numerous athletes advanced to become state champions. He coached such standouts as April Cook, who was a state champion in the high jump, and still holds the North Carolina 3A record at 5’8 ¼’’. In addition to Cook, Murphy also coached Lindsay Taylor ,who jumped 5’11”, and was a state runner-up. For his efforts, he was honored the Coach of the Year six times in his seven-year tenure. Murphy’s coaching experience extends back to his graduate years at Appalachian. While at ASU, he was in charge of fall workouts, helping with recruits and meet day administration. He also coached two astounding athletes in Mel Hubbard and Bobby Terry. Both Hubbard and Terry were conference champions in the high jump, and Hubbard was the first field event athlete to advance to the NCAA Championships for the Mountaineers. Hubbard and Terry both dominated the Southern Conference in the high jump in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Coach Murphy is also a master’s level USATF official and has worked numerous NCAA Championships and USATF Championships. He also was an official at the 1996 Olympic Trials and Olympic Games in Atlanta, and he is the Officials Coordinator for the SoCon Championships. Murphy was a high jumper for the Mountaineers during the late 1970s and still ranks on the indoors all-time list with a 6-9 effort. He reached a personal best of 6-10 1/4 during his master jumping days. During his current Appalachian tenure, Murphy has had 12 all-conference performers and seven runner-up performances in the SoCon Championships. Murphy and his wife Gay have three children. Patrick is 28 and was a track athlete at UNC Charlotte, while Megan, 26, was a volleyball player at UNC Asheville and their youngest Briana, 24, was a soccer player at Charleston Southern.

Jay Weaver

Student Assistant Junior First year Jay Weaver is in his first year as a student assistant coach. He was a member of the ASU cross country and the track and field program for two seasons. Weaver is in his junior year at Appalachian.

2011 Women’s Preview Sprints Coach Weaver returns an abundance of youthful but experienced sprinters from last year’s squad. Senior Kiara Crutchfield, who placed fifth at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships in the 100-meter dash last year, will head up the group. Crutchfield also was a member of the second place 4x100-meter relay. Junior Christina Parker, who was also a member on the second place 4x100meter relay and finished eighth in the 200 at the outdoor championships, will assist Crutchfield in adding depth to the short sprints. ASU returns three-of-four runners from last year’s 4x400-meter relay that was a runner-up at the SoCon Outdoor Championships: sophomores Shenita Martin and D’Shawrna McLucas and junior Asia Dunlap. Dunlap claimed fifth in the 400 at the outdoor championships, while McLucas came in eighth place, respectively. Senior Nadia Liriano, who paced eighth at the SoCon Indoor Championships in the 400m, will be a top prospect to fill the final spot on the 4x400-meter relay.

runner, in hopes to help the Apps out in the 800. Last season, she ran the second fastest outdoor time on the team. Senior Dani Reese looks to accompany Dunalp in the middle distances, as she strives to make the podium in her final season. Reese ran the fastest indoor 800 time last year. Both Reese and Dunlap were members on the distance medley relay that finished third at the indoor conference meet. Juniors Stephanie Chapman and Kelsey Hanger, who are mainly known for running longer distances, will drop down at times to help in the middle distance races, as well. Distance After falling two points short of the SoCon Cross Country Championship, the women’s distance group has established itself as one of the top units in the Southern Conference. At the conference indoor meet last season, Hanger finished sixth in the 3000 and eighth in the 5000. She also cracked the top eight during the outdoor season with her seventh place finish in the 10,000-meter run.

Hurdles Crutchfield’s speed transfers over well to the short hurdle races as she finished third indoors in the 60-meter hurdles and sixth outdoors in the 100-meter hurdles. Fellow senior Michelle Brutus also looks to be a threat in the conference after she finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Martin looks to build off of her fourth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and make a run at an all-conference honor in the challenging race. Junior Naadia Crutchfield and sophomore Joanna Davis will add depth to the hurdling crew in hopes to grab some points at the conference meets. Middle Dunlap has been transitioning to be both a long sprinter and middle distance

Senior Amy Neilson also placed in the 10,000-meter run by claiming fifth overall at last springs SoCon Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Brittney Caudle didn’t run indoors or outdoors last season, but she looks to make her mark on the conference the same way she has in cross country. Caudle won the 2009 SoCon Cross Country Championships, and fought through a season-long injury this year to place eighth. Hannah Orders enters her final season at Appalachian in hopes of earning allconference honors in the steeplechase, an event she placed eighth in last spring. Throws Senior Whitney Smyre, who has won all-SoCon honors seven times during her career, and sophomore Gayshawna Watkins return as ASU’s dominate one-two punch in the throwing events.

Smyre was sidelined partially last season due to an injury, but despite the setbacks, she was still able to claim fourth in the discus and third in the hammer at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Watkins stepped up big as a freshman for Appalachian right away with her third place finishes in the shot put and weight throw at indoor conference. At the SoCon Outdoor Championships, she was the runner-up in the shot put and also placed eighth in the discus and fifth in the javelin. Sophomore Deanna Tiplady showed her value to the team, when she finished second at outdoor conference in the javelin.

Jumps Senior Rebecca Hazeltine, who placed third at indoors and outdoors conference in the high jump, will strive to claim an individual conference championship this year in the event. In the horizontal jumps, Kiara Crutchfield and senior Bianca Harvey hope to pair up to garner all-conference honors in both the long jump and the triple jump. Harvey earned fourth indoors and fifth outdoors in the long jump. She also grabbed eighth place in the triple jump at the outdoor meet. Crutchfield finished seventh in the long jump at outdoor conference. Multi Events Kiara Crutchfield and her sister Naadia Crutchfield will tag team the multi events this season. Kiara owns the school record in both the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon. She did not compete in the heptathlon for outdoor conference, but at the indoor meet she finished second in the pentathlon. Nadia took last season to learn the numerous events, and should be a staple in the grueling competitions this year.

2011 Men’s Preview Sprints Last year’s Southern Conference Outdoor Track Performer of the Year and Freshman of the Year, sophomore Landon Powell, will have high expectations to bring home more individual championships in the short sprints. He claimed first place in the 100 and 200 meters at outdoor conference. Junior Dennis Moore will accompany Powell in the resurgence of the Mountaineer’s short sprints. Moore finished third in the 100 and fourth in the 200m at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Justin Thomas enters his second season at ASU after placing fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 at the conference outdoor meet. Thomas was also on the 4x100-meter relay team with Powell and Moore that took first place at the conference meet for the first time since 2004. Appalachian will likely look towards seniors Phillip Bush and Thomas Lockard to join the defending 4x100 champions as the fourth runner this season. Sophomore Tyler Combs will lead ASU as the top 400-meter runner returning. In the 400-meter dash at the SoCon Championships, Combs finished sixth outdoors and seventh indoors, respectively. He was also a member of the 4x400-meter relay that finished second indoors.

Hurdles ASU returns a duo of rising SoCon hurdlers in junior AJ Dohanic and sophomore Trey Jones. Dohanic was last year’s runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles, and he also finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles. Jones followed Dohanic across the finishline in the 110-meter hurdles as he finished third. He also placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles and fifth at the SoCon Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles. Jones also competed at the USATF Junior Nationals and placed 18th, respectively. Bush should also strengthen the hurdling squad since he was one of Appalachian’s best hurdlers during the indoor season. Middle Distance Brandon Hudgins, a graduate student transfer from Winthrop, will head up the bulk of the Black and Gold’s load for the middle distance races. Hudgins won the 800 and

1500 meters at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. He also claimed fourth place in the 800 and mile at the conference indoor meet. Sophomore Alex Taylor will push Hudgins through out the year as Taylor is coming off a successful freshman campaign. At the SoCon indoor meet, Taylor finished fifth in the 800 and third in the mile, and at the outdoor meet, he claimed third place in both the 800 and 1500. Taylor finished his 2010 season with a ninth place finish at the USATF Junior Nationals in the 1500-meter run.

Junior Chris Moen, the 2009 SoCon indoor mile champion, will be looked towards to add depth at the middle distances, as well. Distance After another banner year for the men’s cross country program, there is a plethora of distance runners primed to make an impact on this year’s track squad. Junior Sean Soderman enters the 2010-11 season as the pace setter for the distance runners. Last year, Soderman took third in the steeplechase and fifth in the 5000-meter run at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. In 2009, he won the steeplechase at the USATF Junior National meet. Sophomores Michael Lilley and Burk Staub come off successful freshman seasons where both of them competed at the USATF Junior National meet in the 10,000-meter run. Lilley earned all-America honors with his sixth place finish, and Staub finished 10th, respectively. Last season, Brian Graves placed sixth in the 5000 and seventh in the 10,000-meter run at the outdoor conference meet. Will Raby will also be looked towards to help the squad after he excelled this season in cross country. Raby placed eighth at the SoCon Championships and was ASU’s top runner. Throws The throwing events have been the backbone to ASU’s recent championship success, and this coming season it will again be a huge strength at the conference meets. ASU has a huge advantage over the other teams in the conference by have three highly decorated seniors in Tim Daly, Jerod Gardner and Malcolm Styers. This trio has placed in the top-three at the SoCon Championships 19 times, and in the past two years, they

have combined to win nine of the 12 SoCon throwing events. Styers, who won all 2010 indoor and outdoor throwing events except javelin, was recognized as the SoCon Outdoors Outstanding Performer of the Year and the Field Performer of the Year. Junior Jared Stalling, who placed topeight outdoors in the hammer, shot put and discus, will also enhance Appalachian’s arsenal in the throwing events. Caleb Poplin will be looked at to acquire points at the outdoor conference meet in the javelin. Jumps Darius Purcell is one of the conference’s top high jumpers and looks to claim the conference title after finishing second both indoor and outdoor the past two seasons. Purcell is one of the best jumpers in the region, and he will make a strong push for the NCAA Championships if he surpasses the seven-foot mark. Mike Wilson and Ryan Twiford look to soar higher than all the other SoCon competitors in the pole vault this season.

Wilson finished fourth in the pole vault at the SoCon Outdoor Championships. Twiford was the 2008 outdoor champion and the indoor runner-up in 2009, and he hopes to reclaim the top spot in the conference this season. Not only will Bush be utilized in the sprints, but he also will be asked to continue to produce points in the horizontal jumps. Last year, Bush just missed all-SoCon honors at the indoor meet by placing fourth, and he also placed sixth at outdoor conference. In the triple jump, ASU will look towards Wilson and a handful of freshman to fill this void. Wilson finished seventh at the SoCon Outdoor Championships last season. Multi-events Senior Jake Goodchild enters the season with a bunch of experience and SoCon honors in the multi-events. Goodchild finished eighth in the indoor heptathlon. In previous seasons, he placed second in the SoCon outdoor decathlon and third in the indoor heptathlon in 2009.

2010-11 Cross Country (Graduate): Earned second-team all-SoCon honors with a ninth place finish at SoCon Cross Country Championships....ran career best time of 25:05.67 in the 6000m. 2009-10 Track and Field (Graduate): 2010 SoCon Champion at 800m indoor and 1500m outdoor....placed fourth in the indoor mile and outdoor 800m. Winthrop: Two-time all Big-South in the mile run and the 800 meter run....set Winthrop school record in the indoor mile (4:09.71)....times in 800m and 1500m outdoor rank in the top two in school history at Winthrop.

Leigh Hawkins Throws A member of the ASU track and field team from 1986-1989, Leigh Hawkins still ranks second in school history in the discus (170-6), third in the indoor shot put (52-5) and fourth in the outdoor shot put (54-2.5). Hawkins won 11 individual SoCon titles in the shot put, discus, weight and hammer throws during his four-year career. He was also named the SoCon Championship MVP three times. He claimed outdoor championships in the discus in 1986, ‘88 , and ‘89, shot put in 1988 and ‘89. Hawkins also added indoor titles in the shot put and weight throw in ‘88 and ‘89.

Facilities Holmes Convocation Center

Kidd Brewer Stadium

Appalachian indoor track & field enters its seventh season in the George M. Holmes Convocation Center. The Holmes Center serves as home of Mountaineer indoor track and field, as well as Appalachian’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs. The facility houses a 300m directional mondo surface. Standing on Rivers Street at Appalachian State University, the 200,840-square foot Holmes Center serves as the cornerstone to the entry to campus Holmes Center Track and houses ASU’s Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science. The structure also includes the 8,325-seat Seby Jones Arena, which hosts a number of community and cultural events in addition to Appalachian athletics, including graduation and convocation ceremonies, trade shows and concerts. The facility opened on November 17, 2000 with a celebration followed by a men’s basketball contest between Appalachian and the University of North Carolina. With much anticipation, every seat for Indoor Holmes Center Setup the ASU-UNC showdown was sold in advance, marking the first pre-gameday sellout in school history for any sporting event. The athletics ticket office sold the full allotment of tickets for the inaugural contest at the Holmes Center in just 12 minutes. Public service, a cornerstone upon which Appalachian was founded, is the hallmark of the two individuals whom names adorn the university’s convocation center, as former ASU Chancellor, Francis T. Borkowski announced that the center would be called the George M. Holmes Convocation Center and its arena the Seby Jones Arena on March 20, 1999. Holmes is a Republican member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing the 41st District (Yadkin, Wilkes and Alexander Counties). He is the senior co-chair of the North Carolina House of Appropriations Committee. A native of Mount Airy, N.C., Holmes attended Appalachian on a football scholarshipin the 1950’s. Holmes first entered political office from 1975-76 and has served 11 terms since 1979. He serves on the Governor’s Advisory Budget Commission, the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations and the Joint Legislative Transportation Oversight Committee. Holmes was instrumental in securing the bulk of the $36.8 million needed to build the convocation center. Jones served as mayor and a council member of Raleigh from 1967-71. He also served on ASU’s Board of Trustees for eight years, chairing the Board in 1990-91.

The outdoor home of the Appalachian track and field team, Kidd Brewer Stadium stands 3,333 feet above sea level and seats 16,650. Also home to the football and field hockey teams, it was the first facility in either North or South Carolina to install artificial turf, with Appalachian and Elon staging the first football game on fake grass in the Carolinas, Oct. 3, 1970. Opened Sept. 15, 1962, the stadium was originally constructed with 10,000 permanent seats. Seating capacity was expanded to 18,000 following the 1978 season. Completion of an extensive renovation and restoration project on the original 10,000 seats in 1995 readjusted the seating capacity to 16,650. A multi-purpose facility, Kidd Brewer Stadium is also home to intramural sports, while classes and the community use the facility, as well. Owens Field House, at the north end of the stadium, houses athletic and fundraising offices, locker rooms and equipment areas, along with the Dr. Hugh S. Daniel Conference Room. In 1989, a new building was added adjacent to the field house, with athletic and coaching offices, the Dr. Evan Ashby Sports Medicine Room, strength and conditioning areas, and locker rooms. The stadium is also in the midst of renovations to add a new athletic complex, slated to be completed by the fall of 2009. An addition of 4,000 seats on the east side was completed in the summer of 2008. The stadium is named after Kidd Brewer, one of the Mountaineers’ most successful head football coaches, and a colorful part of North Carolina history. Brewer, a Winston-Salem, N.C., native, served as football coach of the Mountaineers for four seasons (1935-38), compiling a 30-5-3 overall mark. An all-American backfield star at Duke University, Brewer’s 1937 Appalachian squad was unbeaten and unscored upon in the regular season. After leaving Appalachian, Brewer started a sales career, but shortly thereafter reported for active duty in World War II. He served as a Naval lieutenant in the Pacific. After the war Brewer was secretary to U.S. Sen. Josiah W. Bailey (D-N.C.). Upon Bailey’s death in office Brewer served his replacement, Sen. William B. Umstead, as administrative assistant. Brewer returned to North Carolina and ran for lieutenant governor in 1956. Between campaigns for governor (1964) and state court of appeals (1968), he made a name for himself as a developer, insurance salesman and philanthropist. Kidd Brewer Stadium, dedicated Sept. 3, 1988, was named Conrad Stadium from 1962 to 1988 for William J. Conrad, a former Appalachian State University trustee and R.J. Reynolds executive.

Varsity Gym During both the indoor and outdoor seasons, the track and field teams are able to escape the elements with an expansive practice facility in Varsity Gym. A new Mondo track surface was added in 2007 with a length of over 100 meters. Along with the track surface, the facility houses a shot put and weight throwing area, pole vault and high jump facilities, a full weight-lifting area and athletic training facilities. Varsity Gym’s floor also received a facelift in 2008, as a new hardwood surface was installed. The arena is the practice home for wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and field hockey.

Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Since that time, the area has attracted those seeking natural beauty, adventure and learning. Appalachian is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. The university offers a challenging and stimulating learning experience for nearly 17,000 students. Appalachian combines the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large, research institution. Appalachian supports a broad-based athletics program, featuring 10 men’s and 10 women’s intercollegiate teams. The Mountaineers hold NCAA Division I status and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1971. The Mountaineers won their 30th Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics during the 2009-10 academic year. The award was established in 1979. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles – in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Germann Cup, which recognizes overall women’s excellence, has been won by Appalachian eight times since the award’s inception in 1987. This is the second-most in league history. Since joining the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers have captured league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. Appalachian’s student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field. In the 2009-10 academic year, 69 student-athletes made the Southern Conference’s academic all-conference teams. To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average. One Mountaineer had a 4.0 GPA.

Environmentally responsible campus

The Princeton Review’s 2010 “Guide to 286 Green Colleges” included Appalachian among the nation’s most environmentally responsible campuses. Appalachian’s sustainability ethic is evident through an electricity-generating wind turbine on campus, a biodiesel-powered public transportation system, research and academic degree programs that focus on issues related to energy, economics and the environment, as well as a commitment to new buildings that are efficiently designed and LEED® certified.

An Education Leader

The Reich College of Education provides the most teacher education graduates of all University of North Carolina campuses – 16 percent of beginning teachers are prepared by Appalachian. The college’s new building under construction should be complete by summer 2011.

Appalachian has more than 99,000 living alumni, 70 percent of whom have remained in North Carolina after graduating. They are leaders in their communities and professions, exemplifying how Appalachian can and does make a difference in the world.

What’s visible from Kidd Brewer Stadium… State’s Largest Wind Turbine – This community-scale, 100-kilowatt wind turbine stands 153 feet and feeds enough electricity directly to the grid to power 15 homes. It was paid for primarily through student funds and in partnership with the campus utility, New River Light and Power. Aside from producing clean energy, the turbine serves as an educational monument to Appalachian’s ethic of sustainability. Howard’s Knob – Located just a half mile from downtown Boone, this peak has an altitude of 4,420 feet. It was named for Benjamin Howard, a Revolutionary War loyalist who fled to a cave there to escape American patriots. Rich Mountain – One of 20 North Carolina mountains bearing this name, the Watauga County ridge extends northwest from Boone. It is named for its unusually fertile though rugged slopes. Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock

Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock became Appalachian State University’s sixth chancellor in July 2004. During his tenure, Appalachian has experienced significant growth in several areas, and the quality of the university’s academic programs has continued to advance, directing extensive national attention to Appalachian. The university has become a destination of choice among the brightest and best high school graduates, with freshman SAT scores averaging 1158 and grade point averages of 3.92 in the 2009-10 academic year. Since Chancellor Peacock assumed office, Appalachian has raised more than $65 million in private funding. Appalachian ACCESS, a university scholarship program offering North Carolina’s low-income students living at or below the poverty level a four-year university education debt free, was first awarded to members of the freshman class in 2007. Capital improvements and new construction under Chancellor Peacock’s leadership has included the Student Recreation Center, Central Dining Facility, Athletics Center, residence hall renovations, steam system upgrades and the opening of Belk Library and Information Commons. Construction projects currently under way include a new college of education building, new on-campus housing, a facility for the Heltzer Honors Program and an expansion to Plemmons Student Union. Prior to his appointment as chancellor, Dr. Peacock served at Appalachian as interim provost and executive vice chancellor. He joined the faculty in Appalachian’s Walker College of Business in 1983, was appointed assistant dean of the business school in 1987, associate dean in 1989, and served as dean of the college from 1992-2003. Previously, he taught at the McIntyre School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and worked for the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse & Co. in its Winston-Salem and Charlotte offices. Chancellor Peacock received his undergraduate degree in accounting at Mars Hill College and his master’s and doctorate degrees in accounting at Louisiana State University. In September 2006, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Mars Hill College. He is a native of Rocky Mount. He and his wife, Rosanne, have two grown sons, Chris and Brian. Chancellor Peacock serves on the NCAA Division I Presidential Advisory Group, Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors, Homes for Children Board of Directors, Leadership North Carolina Board of Directors, and he chairs the North Carolina Campus Compact Executive Board. He has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. He also is the recipient of the Golden Eagle Award for Leadership from AdvantageWest, the L. Richardson Preyer Alumni Award from Leadership North Carolina, and a visionary leadership in education award from the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce. In addition, the Peacocks are involved in a variety of civic/community programs and activities.

Kidd Brewer Stadium—also known as “The Rock,” a fitting term for the solid preparation our student-athletes achieve during their time at Appalachian State University—is filled with excitement in anticipation of another great season of Mountaineer football. I join you in taking great pride in our outstanding athletic facilities which were opened only a year ago and benefit the student-athletes and coaches of all 20 varsity sports. These facilities were a long-time coming, and I appreciate the cooperation and patience our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends offered while the project was completed. It was definitely worth the wait. Under the complex’s “Big A” sign, there’s a lot to cheer about: The Mountaineers have earned both the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics 30 times since the award was established in 1979 and the Germann Cup, recognizing the top women’s program in the conference, six of the 18 years the award has been presented. In addition, our student-athletes consistently make the Southern Conference’s Academic Honor Roll, and all 20 varsity athletics teams continue to rate at or above national and Southern Conference averages in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR). Our strategic plan states that Appalachian aspires to be a model 21st-century, nationally recognized university combining the best characteristics of a liberal arts education with the opportunities afforded by many research institutions. We are committed to attracting, educating and graduating the best students and to producing the highest levels of scholarship. Appalachian, an influential world citizen preparing students for life in global and local communities, remains an excellent value. Once again, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has recognized Appalachian in its list of the nation’s top 100 values in public colleges and universities in 2009-10. Kiplinger’s rankings are based on a combination of outstanding academic quality and an affordable price tag. We are also committed to improving citizen’s lives in this region, state and nation through research, such as the federally-supported AppalAIR project that monitors air quality and atmospheric conditions and their impact on the region’s ecosystems and climate. Additionally, Appalachian was one of 20 universities selected worldwide to participate in the 2011 Solar Decathlon competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. This prestigious design competition will take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in October, 2011. The newly remodeled Frank Hall, a 203-bed residence hall, has been awarded LEED® gold certification, the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Our commitment to providing quality healthcare professionals was demonstrated when Appalachian’s new College of Health Sciences officially began operating this past July and its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program was accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for five years, the longest period of time for which CCNE grants accreditation to a new program. The program admitted its first students in May 2010. Notable scholarship, excellent teaching and meaningful service define this institution. faculty athletics representative dr. alan hauser Dr. Alan J. Hauser is in his 25th year as Faculty Chairperson of Athletics at Appalachian State University. Appointed to the position in October 1986, Hauser has served on the Athletic Council since 1979. Hauser came to Appalachian as an assistant professor of philosophy and religion in 1972. He served as chairperson of Appalachian’s Philosophy and Religion Department from 1982 until 1997. A member of numerous committees since joining the faculty, Hauser served 12 years on the Faculty Senate, including two years as chairperson. He also chaired the Faculty Assembly for three years. A 1967 graduate of Concordia Teachers College, Hauser earned a master’s degree from Concordia Seminary in 1968 and his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1972. Hauser currently chairs the NCAA Academics, Eligibility and Compliance cabinet and is also a member of its Degree Completion committee. He formerly served as the Southern Conference’s delegate to the NCAA Division I Management Council. Hauser and his wife Gail, who is the Assistant Director of Summer Sessions at Appalachian State University, have four daughters: Debi, Staci, Elizabeth and Jacqueline.

Boone, North Carolina

Boone lies nestled in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians and is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Appalachian State University began as Watauga Academy in 1899 to educate the mountain children and ultimately to prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. Boone is a college town in the best sense – where people say hello on the street and a vibrant downtown is mere steps from the university campus.
