ASU Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex

In 2011, Appalachian soccer begins its fourth season of play at the ASU Soccer Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to ASU Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

Season Outlook Coming off a 5-8-5 season, Appalachian State women’s soccer is ready to rebound in 2011. After joining the program as its third head coach in as many years, Sarah Strickland enters her second campaign at the helm of the ASU, ready to lead the Mountaineers to success.

Junior Meggie Graham, a freshman all-SoCon selection in 2009, returns to assist Dodd in the midfield. Redshirt junior Jordan Horvath is back from injury, and the exceptional fitness of sophomore Sam Neill is another asset to the ASU offense.

“Our returning players are playing at a high level and everyone is working hard,” observes Strickland. “We’re going to take the season game by game, and it should be exciting to see how we handle our difficult schedule … anything is possible.”

Alongside Dunlap on the back line, sophomore Amy Werdine only spent three minutes on the bench as a freshman and is a natural leader and defensive force. Classmate Mimi Kleitches worked hard to develop into the role of a new center back, and Nicole Steyl and Morgan Fancher are also expected to contribute to the defense.

Helping Strickland on the sideline, Appalachian welcomes two new faces to the coaching staff. Assistant Lindsey Morgan comes to Boone after stints with her alma mater, Columbus State, and Stephen F. Austin. Student assistant Ben Birdsong will also be on hand to help organize practices. Morgan and Birdsong accompany Lindsay Cobb, who is entering her seventh year on the ASU bench. “We are excited to have Lindsey on board,” notes Strickland. “She brings a different perspective and background to the program. In addition, Ben provides another point of view and a chance to give our athletes more individualized attention at practices.” Three captains lead the Mountaineers this year. Senior Katy Dodd is a three-time captain whose unique and dynamic play provides creativity and spontaneity in the midfield. Junior Hannah Coad is the heartbeat of the team, holding the squad together and setting the front line. Junior Taylor Dunlap anchors the backfield with her consistency, rarely making mistakes. Joining Coad up front, senior Sydney Hill is the team’s leading returner in assists. She makes some of the league’s best serves and is expected to contribute more assists with her crossing passes. Freshman Callie Johnson has been aggressive in the preseason and is a player to watch for on offense.

In goal, the Mountaineers lost a key asset with the graduation of Caroline Clarke. Redshirt freshman Amy Kolowsky and true freshman Cailynn Moore have demonstrated different strengths and provide Strickland with options between the pipes. Sophomore Jordan Hatton is recovering from injury and may see playing time in the latter half of the season. Arguably the toughest non-conference schedule in program history awaits this year’s Mountaineers. Seven of the Apps’ eight non-conference opponents have qualified for the NCAA tournament at least once since 2005. Two opponents, Army and High Point, were regular-season winners of their respective conferences in 2010. This year’s slate also features two teams from the ACC (Clemson and Virginia Tech), a conference that ASU has not faced since the Black and Gold hosted Florida State in 1997. “Our girls asked for a strong non-conference schedule,” explains Strickland. “The competition will be a tough reality check and will strengthen the team heading into conference play.” In SoCon play, Appalachian faces tough competition from a league that should play tougher than ever. UNCG and Georgia Southern bring new coaching staff, and The Citadel has developed into a new force in the league. “Anything is possible in the conference,” says Strickland. “You have to have a good day every day.”

Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which enters its 91st season of intercollegiate competition in 2011, has become known as one of the nations’s leaders in emphasizing the development of student-athletes and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premiere conference in the Football Championship Subdivision since reclassification in 1981. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific-12 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 RhodesScholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. The SoCon also sponsors two all-sports awards, the Commissioner’s Cup for men’s programs and the Germann Cup for women’s teams. In 2011, Appalachian won both cup for the eighth time, earning its 31st Commissioner’s Cup and its ninth Germann Cup. Appalachian remains the only SoCon program to sweep both awards in the same year, a feat it has accomplished eight times.

ASU Administration Charlie COBB

Debbie RICHARDSON

Director of Athletics NC State, 1990 Seventh Year

Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Auburn, 1975 16th Year

In his first six years at Appalachian State University, Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb has led the department to unparalleled success.

In 2011, Debbie Richardson begins her 16th year as Senior Woman Administrator at Appalachian State University. She joined the Mountaineer staff in August 1996 as an assistant athletics director and earned the title of Senior Associate Director in 2006.

The many achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during Cobb’s tenure include: • Three NCAA Division I football national championships and the first NCAA football titles ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. • Shattering football attendance records at Kidd Brewer Stadium. • Six-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships — recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. • Three Germann Cup championships — recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the SoCon. • Thirty-five percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25). However, the most notable of Cobb’s many achievements has been the addition of first-class facilities that will give Appalachian the opportunity to be successful across the athletics spectrum for years to come. Facility enhancements totaling $50 million were completed in 2009, headlined by the 120,000-square-foot Appalachian Athletics Center. The seven-story complex, located behind Kidd Brewer Stadium’s west stands, includes a strength and conditioning center, training facilities, academic study space and a computer lab for all ASU student-athletes. Cobb’s peers recognized him for his efforts when the National Collegiate Athletics Directors Association (NACDA) named him the NCAA Division I FCS Southeast Region Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in 2011. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations for seven years. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees.

Richardson serves as administrator for seven men’s and women’s sports, including women’s soccer. As the senior woman administrator, she acts as spokesperson for the needs and interests of women within the athletics department, campus and community. In the Southern Conference, Richardson sits on the wrestling and television committees and is the current chair of the volleyball committee. Regionally, Richardson serves as the chair of the south region volleyball ranking committee, and, at the national level, she is entering her second year as a member of the NCAA Division I volleyball committee. Richardson came to Appalachian following five years as assistant athletics director at the University of Illinois. Previously, Richardson spent nine years at the University of South Florida, including seven seasons as head volleyball coach. While at USF, Richardson compiled a 180-117 record and earned three Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year awards while leading her team to four Sun Belt championships. A 1975 Auburn graduate, Richardson was a four-year starter for the Tigers during the AIAW-era. She earned a master’s degree in physical education from East Tennessee State in 1977.

ASU ASSOCIATE AND ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTORS

In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent six years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant executive director for the Atlanta Sports Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and handled all game and event operations for the Peach Bowl.

Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A second-team all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship.

Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life — that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
