Shae Wesley Head Coach Second Season Illinois State, 2002
The Wesley File
Shae Wesley enters her second season at the helm of Appalachian State Univeristy’s softball program. She was hired as the third head coach in Appalachian State University softball history on September 13, 2010. In Wesley’s first season at the helm, she guided the Mountaineers to their second-straight winning season (26-24) and the best Southern Conference record (15-7) in school history. The Mountaineers sputtered out of the gate, going 6-13 in their first 19 games, but when the weather warmed up in the High Country so did ASU. The Apps went 16-6 from mid-March thru April, including three-game series sweeps of Elon and Samford as well as a two-game sweep College of Charleston, which was the first time the Mountaineers recorded two victories over Cougars since 2001. She coached four all-conference honorees, including two first-team members. Sophomores Allie Cashion and Meghan Smith earned first-team selections while seniors Katie Boyd and Hannah Dow garnered second-team rcongnition. Prior to her arrival at ASU, Wesley served as the first head coach in the history of Heartland C.C. located in Normal, Ill. In the program’s inaugural season in 2008, she led the Hawks to a 32-11 record and a third-place showing at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national tournament. The following year, she coached the Hawks to a 50-8 campaign that culminated with winning the NJCAA Division II national title. For her efforts, Wesley was named the 2009 NJCAA Coach of the Year, Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Region 24 Coach of the Year, as well as heading a staff that was tabbed as the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association. In addition to the success on the field, Wesley’s 2009 title team ranked 11th nationally with a 3.38 cumulative grade point average. Ten of her players went on to play at fouryear programs with seven joining the NCAA Division I ranks, including pitcher Hannah Dow, outfielder Michelle Gorzelle and and infielder McKenzie Phillips, who all played at Appalachian. Wesley also played an integral role in the formation and growth of the entire athletics department at Heartland, as she was one of the first employees ever hired by the newly formed program in 2006. After compiling an 82-19 record (.812) in two seasons at the helm, Wesley stepped down after winning the 2009 national crown to focus solely on her position as Young Athletes Coordinator for the Illinois Special Olympics. In that role, she coordinated and facilitated training for more than 2,500 Young Athletes across central and southern Illinois. She has also served as player/coach of the Bloomington Lady Hearts, a National Softball Association Major AA team, from 2005-08 and a player and coach in the Hutt Valley softball program in New Zealand from 2002-03. Wesley played collegiately at Illinois State in 2001 and ‘02, earning second-team allAmerica recognition as a senior and all-Missouri Valley Conference honors both seasons. She began her college career at Illinois Central College, where she was named to the 2000 NJCAA national all-tournament team before transferring to Illinois State. She graduated from ISU in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology (sociology minor).

Kayla Richardson Assistant Coach Second Season Appalachian State, 2010
Kayla Richardson enters the 2012 season in her second season on the Mountianeers’ softball coaching staff. Richardson, the all-time winningest pitcher in Appalachian’s softball history, works primarily with ASU’s pitchers. Richardson’s pitching staff recorded a 2.95 earned run average, 183 strikeouts, 24 complete games and nine shutouts. The Mountaineers’ nine shutouts were the most in school history and their earned run average was third lowest in program history. A four-year standout in the circle, Richardson had one of the best seasons by an ASU pitcher in 2009, setting single-season records for wins (14), starts (28), complete games (23), innings pitched (204.1) and strikeouts (155). INFIELD
The Mountaineers return four upperclassmen in the infiled: senior middle infielder Megan Rembielak, senior catcher Michelle Lighton, senior first baseman Lindsay Whitlock, and junior utility player Meghan Smith. Remielak made 107 starts in her first two years in the Black and Gold at shortstop and made 46 starts at second base last season. Her experience in the middle of the infield will be very important in anchoring the infield. The Advance, N.C. native is a career .313 batter with her slap hitting style tallying 158 base hits, which is fifth all-time in the ASU record book and 39 runs batted in. Also she brings speed on the base paths with 47 career stolen bases, including 18 last year to lead the Apps and finished fifth in the conference. Remielak also brings a solid glove to her game with a .910 career fielding percentage and .940 percentage last spring in 183 chances with 94 putouts and 78 assists.
Meghan Smith
Lighton solidifies the Mountaineers’ defense with her experience behind the plate. She has made 135 of her 152 starts as Appalachian’s backstop. The senior from Chesapeake, Va., throw six base runners and posted a .972 fielding percentage last spring.
Lighton is currently fifth all-time with 677 career putouts. She batted .211 in 128 at bats with 27 hits, seven doubles, three homeruns, and 13 runs batted in last season. Whitlock is a very vocal leader which will be much need at the first-base position with such a young team. The senior made seven appearances with a perfect fielding percentage and 34 putouts last season. She is a career .970 percent fielder with 190 putouts, five assists, and only six errors. Smith will be expected to help fill the void at third base that was left by one of Appalachian’s greats, Katie Boyd. Smith garnered her first all-conference accolade last year. She led the Apps with a .359 batting average and was ranked eight in the SoCon. The Stafford, Va. native, recorded 41 RBIs to put her second on the team and fifth in the conference. She also compiled 16 multiple hit games and 12 multiple RBI games to lead ASU.
Allie Cashion
PITCHING
Senior Caitlin Wainright is the Mountaineers lone returning pitcher and will be depended upon lead the young pitching staff through the riggerous 50-game regular season. She fanned 54 batters in 83 innings and made 12 starts in 27 appearances in the circle with a 3.46 earned run average last year. Wainright, a Greenville, N.C. native, holds opposing batters to a career .249 average which puts her third all time and is seven-thousandth of a point from topping the list. She also sits third all-time in earned run average (2.59), fourth in strikeouts per game (4.90), and third in shutouts (7).
2012 Outlook
After completing one of the best seasons in Appalachian State University softball program history under first year head coach Shae Wesley with a 26-24 overall record and a second-place regular season Southern Conference record of 15-7. This year’s squad is very young with 11 newcomers and only seven returners. Wesley returns seven upperclassmen, including first team all-SoCon outfielder Allie Cashion and utility player Meghan Smith. Cashion and Smith join only four other Apps that have accomplished the feat of being named first team. Lindsay Glover garnered the award in 2005 and 2006, Kristyn Hurt in 2007, Katie Boyd in 2008 and current ASU assistant coach Kayla Richardson in 2009.
NEWCOMERS
Wesley brings in eleven newcomers, including three transfer student-athletes and eight freshmen. Senior Brittany Pierce is a transfer from UNC Wilmington and joins the Mountaineers outfield core with 188 career games played. Pierce’s experience in the field is vital to solidify the inexperience outfielding core. Sophomore Racquel Cooke comes to Boone after spending a season at Costal Carolina where she appeared in nine games and was used in vital situations as a pinch runner. The final transfer is a sophomore Caroline Williams from James Madison. Williams brings a big bat to the Apps lineup and will help replace the loss of Boyd. The freshmen class is composed of three outfielders; Caroline Chambers, Dani Heinchen, and Whitney Johnson, a pair of catchers; Caroline Rogers and Sarah Warnock, middle infielder Cynthia Gomez, pitcher Caroline Wainright, and utility player Riley Carter.
OUTFIELD ASU’s outfield returns junior Allie Cashion and redshirt-senior Michelle Gorzelle. Cashion was named first-team all-SoCon and all-tournament team accolades last season. She ranked sixth in the conference and led the team with 46 RBIs, and also ranked second on the team in batting average (.345), hits (50), homeruns (8), and total bases (88). Cashion registered 14 multiple hit games and 10 multiple RBI games. She is third all-time in homeruns (15), fourth in doubles (26) and runs batted in (89), and second in slugging percentage (.559). Gorzelle used a medical redshirt last spring due to a shoulder injury. In her junior season she appeared in all 52 games and batted .247 with 36 hits, 13 runs and seven runs batted in. She also snagged four stolen bases and posted a .977 fielding percentage with 42 putouts.

2012 Appalachian State Softball Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium , the first-ever oncampus home for Mountaineer softball, opened on March 31, 2007 when Appalachian State hosted the College of Charleston. Adjacent to the Sofield Family Indoor Practice facility on the former site of Red Lackey Baseball Field, Sywassink/ Lloyd Family Stadium features a natural-grass playing surface, state-of-the-art press box, concessions and seating for 1,000. The Sofield Indoor Practice facilitiy offers a comfortable and versatile setting for the Mountaineers during bouts of inclement weather. It includes a full athletic training room, offices and storage room. The FieldTurf surface allows the Apps room for batting and fielding practice. On the first floor of the recently opened Appalachian Athletics Center is a 9,000-square-foot athletic training facility that is easily accessible to the Mountaineers. On the second level, the softball team has access to a 9,000-square foot strength and conditioning center.

he Southern Conference, which is in its 91st season of intercollegiate competition in 2011-12, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Membership History n Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Iamarino has promoted the Southern Conference through an ambitious agenda which has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, launched the conference’s Hall of Fame and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C., to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current conference logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C., to Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts. Championship History he first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Appalachan Sweeps Comssioner’s and Germann Cups for the Eighth Time in SoCon History
F
or an unprecedented eighth time, Appalachian State University athletics swept the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s and Germann Cups during the 2010-11 season. Appalachian is the only school to ever win both the Commissioner’s Cup (SoCon’s top men’s all-sports program) and Germann Cup (SoCon’s top women’s all-sports program) in the same academic year, a feat it has now accomplished three times in the past six years and eight times since the inception of the Germann Cup in 1986-87. Appalachian’s Commissioner’s Cup title is its sixth-straight, 19th in the past 20 years, 26th in the past 28 years and 31st overall. No other conference school has won the Commissioner’s Cup more than five times since its inception in 1969-70 and no current SoCon member besides ASU has claimed it more than once. Thanks to championships in four of the 10 men’s sports, the Mountaineers cruised to this year’s Commissioner’s Cup crown with 91 points in the all-sports standings, 13 better than secondplace UNC Greensboro. Appalachian was buoyed to the title by its record-tying sixth-consecutive SoCon football championship and its second-straight men’s cross country/indoor track and field/ outdoor track and field triple crown. On the women’s side, the race was the closest in SoCon history, with Appalachian edging defending champion Samford by a halfpoint for ASU’s ninth Germann Cup title and first since 2006-07. The Mountaineers finished in first or second place in over half of the league’s nine women’s sports, winning championships in women’s basketball and indoor and outdoor track and field and placing second in cross country and softball. In addition to last year, Appalachian also won both the Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in 1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1991-92, 2005-06 and 2006-07.

WHO WE ARE
Nestled in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Appalachian State University combines the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large research university. Known for its value and affordability, Appalachian enrolls about 17,200 students and offers more than 140 undergraduate and graduate majors. Small classes and close interactions between faculty and students create a strong sense of community, which has become an Appalachian hallmark.
EDUCATING NORTH CAROLINA’S CITIZENS AND LEADERS
Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Boone now attracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a smalltown atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 25 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, many of whom are leaders in communities in North Carolina and around the world. Appalachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to communities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused green technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s best public universities in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 411-acre main campus includes 19 academic buildings, 20 residence halls, four dining facilities and 11 recreational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges. Appalachian supports a broad-based athletics program, featuring 10 men’s and 10 women’s intercollegiate teams. The Mountaineers hold NCAA Division I status and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1971. The Mountaineers won their 31st Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics during the 2010-11 academic year. Appalachian has claimed six-consecutive Commissioner’s Cups and eight total Germann Cups, recognizing overall excellence in women’s athletics. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Appalachian is the only school to ever win both the Commissioner’s Cup and the Germann Cup in the same academic year. Since joining the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers have earned league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. Nearly 35 percent of Appalachian student-athletes earn a place on the department’s Honor Roll, with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Five athletic programs have received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their Academic Progress Rate scores being ranked among the nation’s top 10 percent.
APPALACHIAN ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to the high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing ASU is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.
APPALACHIAN ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT
Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

BOONE
NORTH CAROLINA Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life — that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
