Appalachian State Mountaineers Bill Dicus Head Coach 20th season Campbell University The 2011-12 season marks Bill Dicus’ 20th year at Appalachian State University and his 18th at the helm of the men’s golf program. With a young squad in 2010-11, Dicus’ team surpassed its modest expectations in what was thought to be a rebuilding year. In March, sophomore Josh Nichols matched a program record with a 65 in the opening round of the Don Benbow/North-South Invitational and carried the Apps to their first tournament title since 2002-03 with a 36-hole tally of 585 (+17). Nichols cruised to a five-stroke individual win at the event, while Daniel Walsh tied for third place and two others notched top-20 finishes as well. That tournament was ASU’s third-straight top-10 finish in the spring as a mix of veterans and newcomers combined for a 301.3 stroke average on the season, the third-best in program history. Freshman Casey Komline made a splash in his rookie year, ranking third on the team with a 75.81 stroke average in 16 rounds to go along with a pair of top-10 finishes. In 2009-10, the head coach saw his hard work pay off as senior Casey Johnson won the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate and later placed second at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. The senior graduated as one of the top golfers in the Southern Conference and one of the best in ASU history. Johnson graduated with four of the five lowest single-round scores in program history, as well as the best 54-hole tournament score (207). His stroke average is also the best in ASU history, at 74.79 spread over 112 rounds. (He narrowly edges Bern Gregory’s mark of 74.90.) The Apps placed in the top-10 in eight out of 11 tournaments for the season, including a third-place finish at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. ASU’s 298.79 team stroke average in 2009-10 stands as the second-best in program history, behind only 2000-01’s 298.12. In 2008, Dicus led the team to a season-best finish of fifth place at the North-South Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla. During his tenure with the men’s team, Appalachian has finished as high as fourth (in 2001) in the Southern Conference, one of college golf’s most prestigious conferences. Dicus led Bern Gregory onto the all-conference team in 2000 and also led the team to fourth place in 2001 in the Southern Conference. While at Appalachian, he also coached the women’s team for fifteen seasons. The Mountaineers placed second in the SoCon three times, placing behind only national-power Furman. Dicus also coached the league’s Freshman of the Year, Kelly Clements, in 1996. Dicus mentored two All-conference performers, Merryll McElwain (1994-96) and Brittany Winterton (1997). He led the Mountaineers to consecutive sixth-place showings in the very competitive SoCon Championship in 2006 and ‘07, the Apps’ best finish since 2003. A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Dicus is a class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Associtation of America. He received a Bachelor of Science from Campbell University and has done post-graduate work at Appalachian. In addition to his duties at ASU, Dicus serves as a golf professional at Linville Ridge Country Club in Linville, N.C., one of the premier courses in North Carolina. The Dicus family is heavily involved in charity work throughout the High Country, as well. Dicus and his wife, Pepe, reside in Boone.

Fall 2011 • Ranked fourth on the team with a 73.78 stroke average spanning nine rounds. • Low round of the season was a 68 at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate. • Tied for ninth at the Donald Ross tournament at 76-68-70=214 (+4). • Tied for 11th at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate with a 73-70=143 (+1). • Moved into a tie for ninth on ASU’s career stroke list at 76.63 strokes over 93 rounds. Tied with Adam McLaughlin (1999-2002). • Named to Appalachian Academic Honor Roll. 2010-11 • One of two Mountaineers to compete in all five fall tournaments. • Shot his low round of the season at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate with a 7279-70=221 (+5) for 33rd place. • Carded a 78-75=153 (+11) to lead ASU and place 37th at the Telich Sun Life Financial/CSU Invitational. • Finished 82nd at the Hummingbird Invitational with an 80-75=155 (+13). • Tied for 31st at the Mission Inn Spring Fling with a 77-77-77=231 (+15). • Led the Mountaineers and placed 14th at the Southern Conference Tournament with a 74-72-72=218 (+2). • Averaged 76.60 strokes in 30 rounds for the season with a low of 70. • ASU Honor Roll. • Named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. 2009-10 • Ranks second among returnees in 2010-11 with a 77.1 stroke average in 29 rounds. • Placed 15th at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate with a 71-73-78=222 (+9). • Low round of the fall was a 70 at the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate, where he carded a 77-73-70=220 (+4) in 42nd place. • Also competed at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and Davidson Invitational in the fall. • Opened the spring with a fourth-place finish at the Don Benbow Invitational at 72-71=143 (+1). • Finished 31st at the SoCon Tournament with a 73-76-75=224 (+8). 2008-09 • Placed fourth on the squad with a 77.2 stroke average. • Top finish came at Geico Inter. in 27th place with a 78-79-75-232 (+16). • Low round of the season came at the Charleston Southern Invitational, where he placed 30th at 70-76-86 232 (+19).

Appalachian State Mountaineers Heather Brown Head Coach Fourth season Appalachian State Heather Brown begins her fourth season at the helm of Appalachian State University women’s golf after leading the team to unprecedented success over the past two seasons. A rapidly-maturing team took giant steps in 2010-11, as the Mountaineers claimed their first team title since February 2004 at the Low Country Intercollegiate in March. Three sophomores earned the event’s top finishes, as Yue Xu carded a 147 (+3) to earn her second-career title while Kristina Boo and Rumbidzai Masamvu took the second and third places, respectively. The Apps notched five top-three team finishes in nine tournaments on the season and posted the lowest team score in program history (313.14) for a second-straight year. In a season full of team and individual accomplishments, Xu became the first all-SoCon honoree since 2006, Kristina Boo took over the career stroke average lead at ASU with a 79.26 and four different players combined for 21 top-20 finishes on the season. In 2009-10, senior Brooke Dehart and four freshmen recorded a pair of second-place finishes, at the Campbell Fighting Camel Classic as well as the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. It marked the first time that the Apps placed second or better twice in a season since 2001-02. Newcomer Yue Xu then single-handedly rewrote the record books with her performance at the Southern Conference Tournament. The freshman became the first ASU woman to win the event, with a three-stroke victory, which earned her freshman all-SoCon honors. Under Brown’s tutelage, Xu set ASU’s single-round record (69) and 54-hole record (69-72-76=217) at the SoCon Championship and the single-season stroke average at 75.6 (previously 77.8). All told, Xu placed in the top-10 in all six spring tournaments in 2010. Brown’s solid recruiting efforts began to pay off with team depth, as fellow newcomers Rumbidzai Masamvu (79.3) and Kristina Boo (80.4) ranked second and third on the team in stroke average for the season. In her first season at the helm, Brown’s Mountaineers posted four top-10 team finishes, including fourth place as the host team at the Mimosa Hills Women’s Intercollegiate. She helped Kerri Dice and Brooke DeHart to breakout seasons in 200809 as the duo shaved a combined four strokes off their averages from the year before. Under Brown’s guidance, Appalachian has posted 10 rounds of 305 or lower. Prior to her arrival, ASU had reached that mark just eight times in program history. Brown was tabbed to lead the Appalachian State University women’s golf program on Friday, May 16, 2008. Brown, a 1989 ASU graduate, brings 18 years of professional golf experience with her back to the High Country. From 2002-08, the Madison, Conn. native headed up the Golf Juniors program at Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury, Conn., where she mentored dozens of young golfers, coached high school golfers and taught several hundred private lessons on an annual basis. Additionally, Brown helped lead the Danbury High School girls team to a state championship in 2004-05. Prior to her time in Danbury, Brown served as a golf professional throughout Connecticut at Tamarack Country Club from 1994-95 and 1998-2001, Rolling Hills Country Club from 1996-97, Cabarrus Country Club from 1992-93 and Klein’s Driving Range from 1995-96. As a student-athlete, Brown played for ASU head coaches Tom Adams and Peter Rucker from 1984 to ‘88. She was both the captain and team MVP in 1988. Her former teammate, Angie Ridgeway, is the women’s golf coach at Southern Conference-rival Wofford College. Brown replaced Bill Dicus, who coached both the Mountaineer men’s and women’s programs the previous 13 years.

Personal • Daughter of Devin and Kristina Thomas. • Has a younger sister, Annie. • Hails from a golf family, as her father, Devin Thomas, is a member of the PGA and is the course professional at Waxahachie Country Club. Hound Ears Club Hound Ears Club, one of North Carolina’s finest gated golf communities, offers a tranquil retreat for those who wish to enjoy the crisp cool air of the mountains and the luxurious amenities associated with a private club. Men’s and Women’s Golf Appalachian’s Home Courses Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club Donald Ross, the famed Scottish-born golf course architect, created Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in 1929, taking painstaking advantage of Morganton’s natural beauty and phenomenal panoramic mountain views. We recently completed a thorough restoration of the entire course, preserving the integrity of his design while keeping an eye on the future of the game. Visit Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club — where history and tradition meet timeless perfection. The Blue Ridge Mountain skyline that captivated Ross provides one-of-a-kind backdrops for golfers. Seven holes lead back to the clubhouse. The course plays host to the annual University Cup in March.

Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Appalachian is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The Mountaineers hold NCAA Division I status and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1971. The Mountaineers won their 31st Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics during the 2010-11 academic year. Appalachian has claimed six-consecutive Commissioner’s Cups and eight total Germann Cups, recognizing overall excellence in women’s athletics. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Appalachian is the only school to ever win both the Commissioner’s Cup and the Germann Cup in the same academic year. Since joining the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers have earned league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. Nearly 35 percent of Appalachian student-athletes earn a place on the department’s Honor Roll, with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Five athletic programs have received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their Academic Progress Rate scores being ranked among the nation’s top 10 percent.

Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock became Appalachian State University’s sixth chancellor in July 2004. During his tenure, Appalachian has experienced significant growth in several areas, and the quality of the university’s academic programs has continued to advance, directing extensive national attention to Appalachian. The university has become a destination of choice among the brightest and best high school graduates, with freshman SAT scores averaging 1136 and grade point averages 3.92 in the 2010-11 academic year. Since Chancellor Peacock assumed office, Appalachian has raised more than $93.5 million in private funding. Appalachian ACCESS, a university scholarship program offering North Carolina’s low-income students living at or below the poverty level a four-year university education debt free, was first awarded to members of the freshman class in 2007. Capital improvements and new construction under Chancellor Peacock’s leadership have included the Student Recreation Center, Central Dining Facility, Athletics Center, new on-campus housing as well as residence hall renovations, steam system upgrades, and the opening of Belk Library and Information Commons and a new college of education building. Construction is under way on a new facility for the Honors College and an expansion to Plemmons Student Union. Prior to his appointment as chancellor, Peacock served at Appalachian as interim provost and executive vice chancellor. He joined the faculty in Appalachian’s Walker College of Business in 1983, was appointed assistant dean of the business school in 1987, associate dean in 1989, and served as dean of the college from 1992-2003. Previously, he taught at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and worked for the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse & Co. in their Winston-Salem and Charlotte offices. Chancellor Peacock received his undergraduate degree in accounting at Mars Hill College and his master’s and doctorate degrees in accounting at Louisiana State University. In September 2006, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Mars Hill College. Chancellor Peacock is a native of Rocky Mount. He and his wife, Rosanne, have two grown sons. Chancellor Peacock serves on the NCAA Division I Presidential Advisory Group, Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation Board of Directors, Homes for Children Board of Directors, Leadership North Carolina Board of Directors, and he chairs the North Carolina Campus Compact Executive Board. He has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. He also is the recipient of the Golden Eagle Award for Leadership from AdvantageWest and the L. Richardson Preyer Alumni Award from Leadership North Carolina. In addition, the Peacocks are involved in a variety of civic/community programs and activities.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE DR. ALAN HAUSER Dr. Alan J. Hauser is in his 26th year as Faculty Chairperson of Athletics at Appalachian State University. Appointed to the position in October 1986, Hauser has served on the Athletic Council since 1979. Hauser came to Appalachian as an assistant professor of philosophy and religion in 1972. He served as chairperson of Appalachian’s Philosophy and Religion Department from 1982 until 1997. A member of numerous committees since joining the faculty, Hauser served 12 years on the Faculty Senate, including two years as chairperson. He also chaired the Faculty Assembly for three years. A 1967 graduate of Concordia Teachers College, Hauser earned a master’s degree from Concordia Seminary in 1968 and his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1972. Hauser currently chairs the NCAA Academics, Eligibility and Compliance cabinet and is also a member of its Degree Completion committee. He formerly served as the Southern Conference’s delegate to the NCAA Division I Management Council. Hauser and his wife Gail, who is the Assistant Director of Summer Sessions at Appalachian State University, have four daughters: Debi, Staci, Elizabeth and Jacqueline.

NORTH CAROLINA Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra.
