Appalachian Soccer Stadium at The Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex In 2013, Appalachian soccer begins its sixth season of play at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to the Appalachian Soccer Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

Season Header Outlook Text The 2013 Appalachian State University men’s soccer program will look to improve on an 8-7-4 overall mark and a 2-3-2 record within the Southern Conference last season. The Mountaineers earned the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament and eliminated No. 3 seeded College of Charleston, but fell to Wofford in a double-overtime penalty kick shootout in the semifinals. Head coach Matt Nelson returns to Appalachian for his third season at the helm of the Mountaineers. Nelson also returns both of his assistants this season as Jeff Bilyk and Chris Whalley return to the App State sideline. The Mountaineers will seek to replace nine players from a year ago, including SoCon all-conference first team honoree Lee Williams. App State possesses a deadly scoring threat up top in forward Stanley Broaden, who scored two goals and notched two assists last year. Joining Broaden and sophomores Ewahia Amhanesi and Trey Hemphill up top will be a mix of four freshmen – Jackson Allen, Stephen Chapman, Zach Joens and Tommy Labriola. Backing up the forwards in the midfield, junior Luke Adams returns for the Mountaineers after tallying a goal and two assists last season. Four sophomores and two freshmen will join Adams in the midfield. Alex Herbst and Matthew Melton will be the returning midfield depth from last season. There are four newcomers who will help occupy the middle of the field. Sophomore Trey Hemphill comes over from UNC Asheville where he tallied two goals and three assists in 2012. Zack Fennessy comes aboard from Providence after not logging any game action for the Friars last season. The freshman controlling the middle will be Donovan Japp and Jackson Allen. There are two anchors to what is expected to be a solid back line for Appalachian with seniors Harrison Delbridge and Kojo Thompson returning. Delbridge scored two goals from the back line a season ago. Juniors Seth Williams and Patrick Harrow will also find themselves as key returnees for coach Nelson’s squad. The remainder of the defense is young but talented as freshmen Jordan Melia, Ben Steen, Keegan Tanaka, Zach Joens and Simon Burke are expected to contribute. 6 | 2013 Appalachian State Men’s Soccer
In goal, senior Danny Free and junior Paul West figure to get most of the action for the Mountaineers this season. Free and West combined for all eight of Appalachians’ wins a season ago. Sophomores Holland Hammond and Jaron Bradley will back up the two net minders. The Apps will face a difficult 2013 schedule and will participate in the Lipscomb Invitational, facing Lipscomb and Belmont. The Mountaineers will face a non-conference road schedule that includes Radford, ETSU, Georgia State and a trip to ACC foe North Carolina State. Home matches will include Marshall, Navy, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate and Longwood.

Head Coach Header Matt TextNelson Season Outlook Matt Nelson
Head Coach • Third Season Lynn, 2000 17-10-8 (Career) • 17-10-8 (Appalachian) Matt Nelson returns for his third season at the helm of Appalachian State men’s soccer in 2013. Nelson led the Mountaineers to an 8-7-4 overall mark in 2012. The season included a first round win in the Southern Conference tournament with a 2-1 victory over the College of Charleston. Nelson also coached Danny Free and Lee Williams to first-team all-conference goalkeeper and defensive honors, respectively. After taking over the helm after the first three matches of the 2011 season, the Mountaineers rattled off 11-straight games without a loss (7-0-4) falling one game short of the program’s longest unbeaten streak. His Apps recorded an App State-best 11 shutouts in 2011 and ranked among the nation’s top 12 defenses in goals-against, shutout percentage and save percentage. For his efforts, Nelson was named 2011 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Three of his Mountaineers were named to the all-conference second team and two others were named to the all-freshman squad. Appalachian also advanced to the SoCon tournament semifinals for the second-straight season. During his first season as assistant at App State, Nelson coached freshman Collin Taylor to 2008 first-team all-conference goalkeeper honors and all-freshman accolades. Nelson helped the App State defense lead the Southern Conference in fewest goals allowed and goals against average. In three years with the Mountaineers, Nelson’s keepers have racked up 15 total shutouts. Nelson’s collegiate career remains one of the finest in Lynn goalkeeping history. In 1998, he allowed just six goals with a goals-against average of 0.37, both program records. His career numbers include 59 games played (57 started), 5,023 minutes, 31 shutouts, 49 wins, 30 goals against, a 0.54 goals-against average, 134 saves, and a save percentage of .817; all career figures are second-best in Lynn history. Nelson was an NSCAA all-Region and Scholar all-America player in 1999. He was named to the NSCAA Scholar all-South region twice (1998, 99) and was a two-time all-Sunshine State Conference goalkeeper (1998, 99). After graduation, Nelson played professionally for the Cape Cod Crusaders of the USL Second Division and was an all-league selection. In 2001, he played for KilKenny City of the Irish Premier League before heading back to the USL, this time with the South Jersey Barons and then the Virginia Beach Mariners where he played until 2006. In his final season in 2006, Nelson was selected to the USL First Division all-Star team. In 2007, he was named to the USL all-Second Division second team after a successful season with the Harrisburg City Islanders. As well as a successful professional career, Nelson also brings four years of coaching experience to the program. While working with Virginia Wesleyan College as goalkeeper coach, Nelson helped the Marlins achieve two Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships and a record of 41-15-4 from 2003 to 2005. Nelson also coached William & Mary’s women’s program, helping the Tribe to a record of 23-5-13 as assistant coach in 2005 and 2006.
SoCon Commisioner John Iamarino presents Matt Nelson with 2011 Coach of the Year award.

Athletics Header Administration Text Charlie Cobb
Director of Athletics NC State, 1990 Ninth Year In his ninth year at Appalachian State University, director of athletics Charlie Cobb has spearheaded perhaps the most successful and ambitious period in the University’s decorated athletics history. Of Cobb’s many achievements in his nine years at Appalachian State, the most notable came in March when Appalachian accepted an invitation to join the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference. For many of the University’s most ardent supporters, the announcement that Appalachian would join the Sun Belt on July 1, 2014 capped a years- and even decades-long quest for all 450-plus Mountaineer student-athletes to compete at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. However, the Sun Belt invitation is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to Cobb’s many accomplishments at Appalachian State. The achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during Cobb’s tenure also include: • Three NCAA Division I football national championships — marking the first time that any program has ever won three-consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS — formerly Division I-AA) titles and the first NCAA football championships ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. • Shattering football attendance records at Kidd Brewer Stadium with crowds surpassing “The Rock’s” permanent seating capacity for each of Appalachian’s 46 regular-season home games since Cobb’s arrival in 2005. • A 298-percent increase in football season-ticket sales. • Eight-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships — recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. • Four Germann Cup championships — recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the SoCon. • Sweeping the Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in the same academic year four times — a feat never achieved by any other SoCon school. • Thirty-five percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25). • Student-athletes achieving a combined 3.0 grade point average for both semesters of the 2012-13 academic year. • Seven of 20 varsity programs (football, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field) earning public recognition awards, based on ranking among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports in Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. • The Yosef Club, which provides scholarship and facility support for student- athletes, setting fundraising records each of the past eight years. Annual Yosef Club donations, which never topped $700,000 prior to Cobb’s arrival, surpassed the $3 million mark for the first time in 2012-13. The most visible of Cobb’s many achievements at Appalachian State has been the addition of first-class facilities that give the Mountaineers the opportunity to be successful across the athletics spectrum for years to come. A wave of facility enhancements totaling $50 million were completed in 2009, headlined by the 120,000-square-foot Appalachian Athletics Center. The seven-story complex, located behind Kidd Brewer Stadium’s west stands, includes new football offices and locker room, a strength and conditioning center, training facilities, academic study space and computer lab for all student-athletes, as well as revenue-generating premium seating in the form of 600 club-level seats and 18 luxury suites. The facility enhancements also included other significant renovations to The Rock. A new ticket plaza, which serves as a grand entrance to the stadium, as well as ornamental fencing that replaced the chain-link barriers that used to surround the stadium and field were completed before the 2007 season, while a 4,400-seat upper deck on the stadium’s east side and substantial upgrades to the east and south concourses were completed prior to the ‘08 campaign. In addition to the renovations at Kidd Brewer Stadium, the campaign also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball (Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium), softball (Sywassink/ Lloyd Family Stadium) and soccer (at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex), as well as the Apps’ first-ever indoor practice facility (Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility) and renovations to Varsity Gym that have upgraded the facility to a premier practice and competition venue for Appalachian basketball, indoor track and field, volleyball and wrestling. With the $50 million in facilities enhancements, all 20 of Appalachian’s intercollegiate sports teams now practice and compete in facilities that have either been built or renovated since the turn of the millenium. While Cobb is quick to point out the “total team effort” put forth to achieve the many successes that have been enjoyed since he began his tenure as Appalachian State’s director of athletics on July 1, 2005, it is the experience, vision and work ethic of the 45-year-old Cobb that has steered the Mountaineers to new heights. Cobb’s peers recognized him for his efforts when the National Collegiate Athletics Directors Association (NACDA) named him the NCAA Division I FCS Southeast Region Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in 2011.
He also serves on numerous NCAA and Southern Conference committees, most notably the NCAA Division I Football committee that he currently chairs. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations for the seven years prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. During his tenure, NC State increased football season-ticket sales by 87 percent and men’s basketball season-ticket sales by 121 percent. The combined ticket revenues accounted for an annual increase of over 86 percent for Wolfpack athletics, generating more than $6 million for the department. In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent six years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant executive director for the Atlanta Sports Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and handled all game and event operations for the Peach Bowl. As sales manager for the Georgia Dome from 1994-97, Cobb helped procure events such as the Southeastern Conference football championship, the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournaments, NCAA men’s basketball championship events, Georgia High School Association football playoffs, major concerts and other college and amateur sporting events. Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A second-team all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship. After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities, Cobb earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. Cobb is married to the former Lindsay Brecher, who was an all-ACC goalkeeper for NCSU women’s soccer from 1988-90 and serves as an assistant coach for Appalachian’s women’s soccer program. The Cobbs have a 15-year-old son, Harrison, and a 12-year-old daughter, Branan.
Debbie Richardson Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Auburn, 1975 18th Year
Debbie Richardson begins her 18th year as Senior Woman Administrator at Appalachian State University. She joined the Mountaineer staff in August 1996 as an assistant athletics director and earned the title of senior associate director in 2006. Richardson serves as administrator for a variety of men’s and women’s sports. As the senior woman administrator, she acts as spokesperson for the needs and interests of women within the athletics department, campus and community. Richardson has been very active at conference, regional and national levels, participating on numerous committees. In the Southern Conference, Richardson sits on the wrestling and television committees and is the current chair of the volleyball committee. She is also a former chair of the conference’s Senior Woman Administrators’ Association. Prior to her stint at Illinois, Richardson spent nine years at the University of South Florida, including seven seasons as head volleyball coach. While at South Florida, Richardson compiled a 180-117 record and earned three Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year awards (1984, 1986 and 1988). She led her team to four Sun Belt championships (1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989). Richardson came to South Florida from Gardner-Webb where she was a volleyball coach during the 1981 season. A 1975 Auburn graduate, Richardson was a four-year starter for the Tigers during the AIAWera. She served as a team captain and was named to the all-state team in both her junior and senior campaigns. Boone, North Carolina Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
