2015 APPALACHIAN STATE TENNIS MEN’S TENNIS

SEASON OUTLOOK Zach Bost

Oliver Casey

Appalachian State University men’s tennis enters its first season in the Sun Belt Conference with high expectations after advancing to the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament in 2014. The Mountaineers bring back nearly all of their key players from a year ago, including four all-conference selections. Bob Lake is back at the helm for his 15th year as the head coach at App State and will rely on a talented, but relatively young, roster as the team looks to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1975. Appalachian graduated just two seniors a year ago and brings back five of its top six singles players as well as one of three doubles tandems. While the loss of Sebastien King leaves a void at No. 1 singles, Oliver Casey should be able to move up from No. 2 with relative ease to take on the top spot in the rotation. As a freshman, Casey earned SoCon all-freshman honors after posting a 13-8 record, finishing 12-7 at No. 2 and 1-1 at No. 1. He also earned 10 wins in doubles play a year ago as part of the Mountaineers’ No. 2 doubles pairing, earning second team all-SoCon honors along the way. Zach Bost, who earned first team all-league honors as the doubled partner to King, split time at the No. 3 and No. 4 slots last year and could potentially take over at No. 2 should Casey move up in the lineup. Bost went 8-13 overall in singles play as a sophomore, posting a 3-4 mark at No. 3 and a 5-9 record at No. 4. In doubles play, Bost and King posted a team-best 12-7 record, which included a 7-2 mark against league foes. Jack Maddocks, who joined the Mountaineers last January, was extremely impressive as a freshman, finishing with a 13-10 singles record while spending the majority of his time at the No. 5 spot. He was also recognized as an all-freshman honoree for his incredible season and partnered with Steve Lake to go 6-5 as the No. 3 doubles pairing. Maddocks should challenge for a spot among the top three in this year’s singles lineup. Of the remaining six players on this year’s roster, junior Jan-Willem Kleynhans has the most experience after finishing 9-4 in singles play at the No. 6 spot. He also gained valuable doubles experience as he appeared in the doubles lineup nine times throughout the year. Though used sparingly in singles play, Steve Lake should be another main contributer on the doubles side and could challenge for a regular spot in the singles lineup. He finished 8-11 in doubles play and was 1-0 in his only appearance in singles competition. Robert Jenkins provides added depth to the lineup after appearing in two singles matches and one doubles contest a year ago. Chris Mahan rounds out the list of returners for the Appalachian State. He did not compete as a freshman last year, but was a standout high school player who was ranked as high as No. 38 in the USTA Southern Region. Two newcomers joined the squad at the semester break. Junior college transfer Trey Morris has the potential to contribute immediately. A sophomore, Morris spent last season at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College after an outstanding prep career that saw him post undefeated records as a sophomore (21-0) and a senior (26-0). At one point, Morris was ranked No. 32 in the ITA Boys Southern Region. Scott Webster rounds out the roster as he becomes the third Australian to join the Mountaineers. Like Morris, Webster also had an incredible high school run that saw him go undefeated throughout his career. In fact, Webster was so dominant that he did not lose a set in singles play in high school. He also won numerous state and club titles in his native country. A new league means many new foes for Appalachian this year. While the Sun Belt does not crown a regular-season champion, the Mountaineers will square off against three opponents from the league in Georgia Southern, Georgia State and Troy. The schedule also features matchups with former SoCon foes Davidson and UNCG along with in-state rivals Charlotte, UNC Asheville and UNC Wilmington. Appalachian plays a total of eight home matches this year. The season will wrap up with the Sun Belt Championships in New Orleans from April 16-19, where the winner will earn the league’s bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

Philip Kloc joined the Mountaineer coaching staff in 2013 following a prolific playing career for the Mountaineers. In his first season, Kloc helped guide Appalachian to an appearance in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament. In addition, Kloc also helped coach five all-SoCon selections in 2014, the most in a single season in school history. A 2012 graduate of Appalachian, Kloc was a four-year letterwinner for the Mountaineers and head coach Bob Lake. During his playing days, Kloc compiled a career singles record of 64-32 and was 62-26 in doubles action. He finished 27-12 in Southern Conference play in singles and 26-14 in doubles action, earning all-SoCon honors as a senior with doubles partner Sebastien King. As a junior, Kloc also earned all-league honors in doubles play with Alain Humblet after posting a record of 17-5 at the No. 1 spot. In 2010 and 2011, Kloc posted back-to-back 17-win doubles campaigns and never finished with less than 13 wins in any year of doubles play. He is currently pursuing his MBA from Appalachian State and, in addition to his duties as assistant tennis coach, has also worked with Appalachian’s Academic Services office as an academic liason for the Mountaineer men’s basketball team.

2015 APPALACHIAN STATE TENNIS WOMEN’S TENNIS

SEASON OUTLOOK Clare Cox

Mackenzie LaSure

Appalachian State University women’s tennis is poised for a breakout year as it brings back one of the most experienced rosters in school history. With just one senior on last year’s squad, the Mountaineers bring back a total of six singles players and all three of their primary doubles teams. Clare Cox is the unquestioned leader of the squad after she earned second team all-Southern Conference honors as a sophomore after earning the league’s Freshman of the Year award in 2014. Cox finished 10-13 a year ago in singles competition as she played at the No. 1 spot in every match for App State. She also picked up eight wins in doubles play, where she spent the majority of the time at No. 2 with partners Megan Mullen and McKayla Zupan. Mackenzie LaSure is expected to remain at the No. 2 spot for the Apps after posting a singles record of 7-15 a year ago. She also played much of the year in the team’s top doubles pairing and grabbed four wins with partner Gabrielle Wreder. Wreder posted an impressive singles record as a freshman, going 10-15 overall while spending most of her year at No. 3 (6-10). A versatile part of the rotation, she also played at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots throughout the year. Another standout was Brianna Armellino, who saw the first extensive action of her career as a sophomore and finished 11-14 in singles competition, most of which came in the No. 4 position (9-9). She also teamed up with Megan Mullen as the Apps’ primary No. 3 doubles tandem, compiling a 5-3 record on the year. Zupan saw the most time of the three other returners, going 2-8 in singles play while Megan Mullen went 4-4. Three freshmen will join the fold for head coach Colin Crothers this year. Marisa Anthony, one of the top high school players in North Carolina, could challenge for immediate playing time. A nationally-ranked prospect, Anthony was rated as a two-star recruit by Tennis Recruiting Network. Joining Anthony for their first year in Boone are Olivia King and Melissa Machado. King is the younger sister of current Mountaineer Sarah King and was also an impressive high school athlete. She helped Broughton High School to state titles in 2012 and 2013 and was ranked as a three-star prospect by Tennis Recruiting Network. Machado rounds out the ranks for Appalachian after earning a four-star rating by Tennis Recruiting Network. She did not play high school tennis but was a top player in junior tournament competition. Machado was ranked as high as 139th nationally and 49th in the Southeast Region of the ITA. Appalachian gets a dose of home early in the year as seven of its first 10 matches are played in Boone. All of those will be played indoors at Yonahlossee Racquet Club due to the cold weather during the winter months in Boone. The Mountaineers open the season at No. 4 North Carolina on Jan. 9 before a threematch homestand. The squad will spend the entire month of March on the road and will go a total of 37 days without a match at home before its home finale against King College on April 1. The schedule features in-state showdowns against the likes of Charlotte, East Carolina, and UNC Asheville. Appalachian will also face several former SoCon rivals in Davidson, UNCG and Western Carolina. The Sun Belt Conference does not crown a regular-season champion, but the Apps will face five teams from the league in Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, South Alabama and Troy. The league tournament is slated for April 16-19 in New Orleans where the Mountaineers will battle for a spot in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

RICK

BEASLEY

INTERIM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS NINTH YEAR AT APP STATE

Rick Beasley, one of the most decorated student-athletes in Appalachian State University history, was named interim director of athletics by Appalachian State Chancellor Dr. Sheri N. Everts on Aug. 15, 2014. Beasley has been a member of the athletics administation at his alma mater since 2006. He came to Appalachian State as a senior associate athletics director and was promoted to deputy athletics director in 2014. In his role, Beasley served as the athletics department’s chief development officer and was heavily involved in the department’s day-to-day operations. Appalachian State athletics has enjoyed unprecedented fundraising success under Beasley’s leadership. After never topping $700,000 in any full year prior to his arrival, the Yosef Club (Appalachian State athletics’ fundraising arm) has raised at least $1 million in each of Beasley’s eight full years at the University and has surpassed the $3 million mark each of the past two years. Additionally, Beasley has overseen the solicitation of donations for naming rights and premium seating that has funded much of Appalachian State’s $50 million in athletics facility enhancements since his arrival. An all-America wide receiver at Appalachian State from 197780, Beasley set seven school records during his playing career and remains the program’s all-time leader in yards per reception (17.6) and 100-yard games (16) in a career. In addition to being named a second-team Associated Press All-American in 1979, he was also the Southern Conference Male Athlete of the Year in 1979-80, a threetime all-conference performer and an academic all-conference honoree. For 17 years prior to his return to Appalachian State (1989-2006), Beasley served as the city manager for Conover, N.C. As city manager, he served at the pleasure of the city council and was responsible

The Beasley Family: Rick and Diana

for the administration of all city departments. Beasley was also the town manager of Scotland Neck, N.C. (1985-89) and an assistant city manager in Lenoir, N.C. (1982-85). Beasley earned both a B.A. in political science with a minor in economics and a M.A. with a concentration in local government from Appalachian. His wife, Diana, is director of teacher education recruitment for the Appalachian State office of admissions. She earned a M.A. in higher education administration and university and community leadership from Appalachian. The Beasleys live in Boone.

Boone now attracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is one of the 17 institutions in the University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 26 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, who are leaders in communities in North Carolina and around the world. Appalachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to communities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused sustainable technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s best public universities in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 22 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 19 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recreational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges.

APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing Appalachian is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at Appalachian State University, 10 for men and 10 for women. Appalachian was a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014 – one of 10 conferences that are members of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Nearly half of Appalachian’s student-athletes typically earned inclusion on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 grade-point average or higher while completing at least 24 hours in two semesters. SoCon success Before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014, the Mountaineers won 34 Southern Conference Commissioner’s cups for overall excellence in men’s athletics, with 2013-14 being its ninth-straight year to win. No other school claimed the Commissioner’s Cup more than five times since it was first awarded in 1970. While in the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers earned league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer, softball and men’s tennis. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007. • 96 – number of student-athletes earning Academic all-Conference honors • 42% – percentage of Appalachian student-athletes earning a place on the department’s Honor Roll, with a minimum GPA of 3.25 • 3.03 – student-athletes’ overall cumulative GPA following the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year • 13 of 20 – the number of varsity programs at Appalachian with multi-year APR scores that exceeded the national averages for their respective sports (beginning with the 2009-10 academic year and ending in 2012-13) athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of nondiscrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

BOONE, NORTH CAROLINA Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
