SEASON OUTLOOK/PREVIEW
Season Outlook
A
QUICK FACTS
pp State finished its second year in the Sun Belt conference with a 10-6-4 record with a 5-3-1 conference mark. The Mountaineers advanced to the Sun Belt semifinal for the first time in program history, but fell in 10-9 in PKs against first-ranked South Alabama.
COACHES
This year, the Mountaineers will look to capitalize on what they did well last season, but with more depth and a healthier roster than before. Things already feel different in practice. There’s an edge to the team and a focus that perhaps hasn’t been there before. And the cause is simple: they got a taste of success in the conference tournament last season and only want more. Only this time won’t stop at the semifinals. It’ll hopefully end with a ring.
PLAYERS
The team this year looks primed to be a top contender for the Sun Belt Championship with the return of several key members: Jackie Nieradka, Carrie Taylor, Jenn Bass, Jane Cline, Aubrey Fletcher, Lindsey Tully and Kelly Flanders. Returning from injuries and ready to take the Mountaineers to the next level are Erin Settle, Jessica Easley, Sarah Peatross and Phenix Durham.
2015 REVIEW
Other returners include Sam Steyl and Taylor Ray in the net, alongside Morgan Mosack, Kat Greer, Sarah Moon, Emmily Cowie, Alexa Asher and Brie Bahlmann in the field.

RECORDS
Alongside the veteran core will be 12 newcomers, coming from both near and far. Tristin Derrick, Heather Ostwalt and Kassandra Alvarez all hail from App State’s home: Boone, N.C., while Sharon Osterbind transfers in from UAB to finish out her collegiate career a Mountaineer. Also new to Appalachian: Kayce Ransone, Ava Dawson, Kristin Brown, Ashlyn Stone,

Maggie Hanusek, Marnie Bonn, Caroline Lubinsky and Megan McGuiness. This season, The Mountaineers will feature a lot of looks, combining the seasoned veteran’s skill and expertise with the youth and sheer numbers of their sideline. And with the number of student-athletes coming back from injuries, it only adds to the feeling that this season means more than a regular season. This year they’re battling for redemption, pride, leaving nothing left.

QUICK FACTS
STRICKLAND HEAD COACH
Seventh Season Greensboro College, 1997
COACHES
Sarah Strickland enters her seventh season at the helm of the Appalachian State University women’s soccer program. To date - she has amassed over 17 years of coaching experience at the club, collegiate and national levels. The Mountaineers finished 10-6-4 (5-3-1 Sun Belt) in their second year in the the Sun Belt Conference. After an 8-11 season, Appalachian found its footing and finished the season by winning its first Sun Belt tournament victory by defeating Little Rock in the quarterfinals 2-1. The Mountaineers then took then-first ranked and No. 1 Sun Belt offense South Alabama to PKs after tying them through two overtimes 2-2. App State unfortunately fell 10-9 in PKs, but it was certainly a pivotal accomplishment for the program.
PLAYERS
In the 2014, the Mountaineers finished 8-11 overall and 5-4 in the Sun Belt Conference last season - their inaugural season in the league. Appalachian put together five quality conference wins, including a 3-2 double-overtime comeback win over Troy. Since Strickland’s hiring in 2011, the Mountaineers have gotten a good result in 49 matches. In what has been a program that Strickland has built from the ground up, the Mountaineers have earned five all-conference nominees. The final Southern Conference year in 2013 saw the Mountaineers garner eight wins and finished 8-7-4 and a 4-2-4 mark in the Southern Conference, which was good for a tie for fifth, earning a spot in the conference tournament. Strickland coached both Sam Childress and Julia Holz to second-team all-conference honors and two freshman, Jane Cline and Jackie Nieradka, to the all-freshman team.
2015 REVIEW
Strickland spent her first two seasons building the foundation for program success and earned a result in 18 of 32 games, including 11 wins. Before coming to App State, Strickland was an assistant coach at Mississippi State, where she served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and goalkeepers’ coach for two seasons. She was instrumental in MSU’s turnaround from fourconsecutive losing seasons to a 9-8-2 record in 2009, the program’s first winning season in six years. During the successful ‘09 campaign, the Bulldogs set program records for consecutive wins (eight) and shutouts (four) and achieved the highest RPI ranking in school history (No. 41). Under Strickland’s tutelage, goalkeeper Taryn Holland ranked second in the Southeastern Conference history with 368 career saves and set MSU records for saves and shutouts.
RECORDS
Prior to her stint in the SEC, Strickland was a well-respected club soccer coach and administrator in Alabama for eight years. During that time, she served as the director of coaching for the Montgomery YMCA Capital City Streaks (2000-04), Girls’ Director for Coaching for the American Soccer Club (2004-06) and Staff Director for the Birmingham United Soccer Association (2006-07).
On the national level, Strickland is a United States Soccer Federation “B” licensed coach and served on the staff of the U-14 national program in 2001. She also coached for the Alabama Olympics Development Program boys’ and girls’ programs from 1998-2002 and the Mississippi ODP girls’ in 2009.
FACILITIES
She began her coaching career on the collegiate level as an assistant coach at Troy University in 1998 and served as the program’s interim head coach during the 1999 offseason. From there, she moved on to Auburn University at Montgomery, where she was an assistant on the men’s and women’s staffs from 1999-2000.
Coach Strickland and her husband, Jimmy, have three

children: (left to right) Kelsey, Will and Bo. The former Sarah Churchill was a three-year letterwinner at George Mason, where she helped lead the Patriots to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1996 and 1997, making it as far as the Sweet 16 in ‘97.
Strickland was a three-time Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Academic Award winner and graduated from GMU with a B.A. in psychology in 1998. She earned a M.S. in foundations of education from Troy in 1999. Coach Strickland and her husband, Jimmy (an athletic trainer for field hockey and wrestling at Appalachian) have three children: Kelsey, Bo and Will. Appalachian Soccer Stadium In 2015, Appalachian soccer begins its eighth season of play at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to the Appalachian Soccer Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school and HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS SECOND YEAR AT APPALACHIAN STATE ALMA MATER: SUNY CORTLAND, 1991 Doug Gillin was named director of athletics at Appalachian State University on Feb. 27, 2015. He officially began in the role on April 6, 2015. Gillin, 47, possesses more than two decades of professional experience in collegiate athletics, most recently as deputy director of athletics at the University of Missouri. He spent three years at Missouri and played a prominent role in the Tigers’ transition to the Southeastern Conference. At Mizzou, Gillin was involved in all facets of the athletics department’s financial planning and budget development, was a member of the department’s strategic plan development team and oversaw all external operations, including the Tiger Scholarship Fund development unit, Mizzou Sports Properties, strategic communications and game operations. Most notably, he helped lead the University’s athletics capital campaign and was involved in a $102 million facilities enhancement plan for football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Additionally, he was responsible for all facets of Missouri’s day-to-day operations in the absence of the athletics director, had direct oversight over men’s basketball and was part of a three-person administrative team that oversaw the Tigers’ football program. Prior to his arrival at Missouri in 2012, Gillin spent a decade in North Carolina in various roles with ISP Sports/IMG College, the country’s leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management company. During his 10-year stint with Winston-Salem-based ISP/IMG, he served as the company’s senior vice president (2002-07), executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president for college properties (2010-12). In those roles, he managed the company’s entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees and more than 90 university and conference partnerships. Before joining the ISP/IMG corporate headquarters, Gillin spent the first nine years of his athletics career on college campuses. He began as an assistant ticketing/business office director at Lehigh (1993-94) then served as an assistant marketing director at New Mexico (1994-95) and Missouri (1995-97). In 1997, he became the general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties before taking the same position with Syracuse Sports Properties in 1999. The Binghamton, N.Y. native was a four-year letterwinner in ice hockey at SUNY Cortland from 1987-91. He was a two-time team MVP and was selected as the squad’s co-captain in 1990. He graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1991 with a B.S. in physical education (sports management concentration). He went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education from Ohio University in 1993.

The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. THE APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE
Appalachian was founded in 1899 by the Dougherty brothers to provide access to education for children in the “lost provinces.” The pioneering spirit necessary to overcome the mountains’ hardships quickly characterized the institution, giving Appalachian a special niche in higher education that continues today. After more than a century, students still feel the pull of this unique place to transform their lives, and Appalachian has remained focused on providing students with educational experiences that are not only life-changing but world-changing. Alumni go on to earn advanced degrees, approach life entrepreneurially, build distinguished military careers, work overseas and develop careers that take them in many directions, all while giving back to the communities in which they live and work.
WHY CHOOSE APPALACHIAN? STUDENTS CHOOSE APPALACHIAN BECAUSE THEY CAN: • Engage in critical inquiry with a community of scholars • Discover and demonstrate their passion through research or performance • Travel the nation and the world to learn about themselves and the world around them • Engage with communities at home and across the world • Create lifelong bonds and friendships with faculty and fellow scholars • Develop a deep and holistic understanding of sustainability • Channel their desire to make a real and lasting change in the world Appalachian faculty members are known for using innovative, interdisciplinary and integrative curricula, being dedicated to research and student mentorship, and investing in new strategies and technologies. BOONE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA Boone, North Carolina, is a college town in the best sense—a place where people say ‘Hello’ on the street and with a vibrant downtown a block from campus. Its eclectic hub, known as King Street, features specialty shops, restaurants and cultural attractions that appeal to students, parents, residents and tourists. Whether in town for a weekend or a four-year education, many people find it difficult to leave Boone. Boone’s accolades include National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Outside magazine’s top 10 “Best Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and TripAdvisor’s “Hidden Gems: 13 U.S. Towns That Are Diamonds in the Rough.” Boone is ranked the 10th safest place in North Carolina by Movoto.com and 19th in SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina,” based on FBI crime report data. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains attract outdoor enthusiasts year-round for hiking, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, cycling, fishing, kayaking, rock climbing and other activities. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which draws some 20 million visitors a year, and a section of the Appalachian Trail that runs from Virginia and Tennessee through western North Carolina, are both just minutes from campus. Preserving these mountains is essential to Appalachian’s character. An ethic of sustainability resounds through the campus and local community, as evident through an on-campus electricity-generating wind turbine, a commitment to making new buildings efficiently designed and LEED® certified, a biodiesel-powered public transportation system, and research and academic degree programs that focus on issues related to energy, economics and the environment. Many sustainability projects on campus are funded by a Renewable Energy Initiative fee, which students overwhelmingly supported as a way to ensure a better future for all. The natural setting places outdoor recreation and experiential learning programs at our doorstep and the heritage of the region is alive on and around campus. The university’s location also attracts students, faculty and staff interested in sustainable development and the economics of sustainability. As a result, the Research Institute for Environment, Energy and Economics is spearheading cutting-edge research that is making Appalachian a leader in this area. The 2010 U.S. Census lists the population of Watauga County at 51,079 and the population of Boone at 17,186. Boone is known for having friendly, safe neighborhoods and quality schools.

State’s Largest Wind Turbine – This community-scale, 100-kilowatt wind turbine stands 153 feet and feeds enough electricity directly to the grid to power 15 homes. It was paid for primarily through student funds and in partnership with the university-affiliated utility, New River Light and Power. Aside from producing clean energy, the turbine serves as an educational monument to Appalachian’s ethic of sustainability. Howard Knob – Located just a half mile from downtown Boone, this peak has an elevation of 4,420 feet and is known more commonly as Howard’s Knob. It was named for Benjamin Howard, a Revolutionary War loyalist who fled to a cave there to escape American patriots.
