2014 APPLACHIAN STATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF DIREC TOR OF ATHLETICS CHARLIE COBB In his ninth year at Appalachian State University, director of athletics Charlie Cobb has spearheaded perhaps the most successful and ambitious period in the University’s decorated athletics history. Of Cobb’s many achievements in his nine years at Appalachian State, the most notable came in March when Appalachian accepted an invitation to join the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference. For many of the University’s most ardent supporters, the announcement that Appalachian would join the Sun Belt on July 1, 2014 capped a years- and even decades-long quest for all 450-plus Mountaineer student-athletes to compete at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. However, the Sun Belt invitation is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to Cobb’s many accomplishments at Appalachian State. The achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during Cobb’s tenure also include: • Three NCAA Division I football national championships — marking the first time that any program has ever won three-consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS — formerly Division I-AA) titles and the first NCAA football championships ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. • Shattering football attendance records at Kidd Brewer Stadium with crowds surpassing “The Rock’s” permanent seating capacity for each of Appalachian’s 46 regular-season home games since Cobb’s arrival in 2005. • A 298-percent increase in football season-ticket sales. • Eight-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships — recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. • Four Germann Cup championships — recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the SoCon. • Sweeping the Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in the same academic year four times — a feat never achieved by any other SoCon school. • Thirty-five percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25). • Student-athletes achieving a combined 3.0 grade point average for both semesters of the 2012-13 academic year. • Seven of 20 varsity programs (football, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field) earning public recognition awards, based on ranking among the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sports in Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. • The Yosef Club, which provides scholarship and facility support for student-athletes, setting fundraising records each of the past eight years. Annual Yosef Club donations, which never topped $700,000 prior to Cobb’s arrival, surpassed the $3 million mark for the first time in 2012-13. The most visible of Cobb’s many achievements at Appalachian State has been the addition of first-class facilities that give the Mountaineers the opportunity to be successful across the athletics spectrum for years to come. A wave of facility enhancements totaling $50 million were completed in 2009, headlined by the 120,000-square-foot Appalachian Athletics Center. The seven-story complex, located behind Kidd Brewer Stadium’s west stands, includes new football offices and locker room, a strength and conditioning center, training facilities, academic study space and computer lab for all student-athletes, as well as revenue-generating premium seating in the form of 600 club-level seats and 18 luxury suites. The facility enhancements also included other significant renovations to The Rock. A new ticket plaza, which serves as a grand entrance to the stadium, as well as ornamental fencing that replaced the chain-link barriers that used to surround the stadium and field were completed before the 2007 season, while a 4,400-seat upper deck on the stadium’s east side and substantial upgrades to the east and south concourses were completed prior to the ‘08 campaign.

Cobb’s peers recognized him for his efforts when the National Collegiate Athletics Directors Association (NACDA) named him the NCAA Division I FCS Southeast Region Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in 2011. He also serves on numerous NCAA and Southern Conference committees, most notably the NCAA Division I Football committee that he currently chairs. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations for the seven years prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. During his tenure, NC State increased football season-ticket sales by 87 percent and men’s basketball season-ticket sales by 121 percent. The combined ticket revenues accounted for an annual increase of over 86 percent for Wolfpack athletics, generating more than $6 million for the department. In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent six years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant executive director for the Atlanta Sports Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and handled all game and event operations for the Peach Bowl. As sales manager for the Georgia Dome from 1994-97, Cobb helped procure events such as the Southeastern Conference football championship, the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournaments, NCAA men’s basketball championship events, Georgia High School Association football playoffs, major concerts and other college and amateur sporting events.

In addition to the renovations at Kidd Brewer Stadium, the campaign also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball (Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium), softball (Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium) and soccer (at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex), as well as the Apps’ firstever indoor practice facility (Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility) and renovations to Varsity Gym that have upgraded the facility to a premier practice and competition venue for Appalachian basketball, indoor track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A second-team all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship.

With the $50 million in facilities enhancements, all 20 of Appalachian’s intercollegiate sports teams now practice and compete in facilities that have either been built or renovated since the turn of the millenium.

After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities, Cobb earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992.

While Cobb is quick to point out the “total team effort” put forth to achieve the many successes that have been enjoyed since he began his tenure as Appalachian State’s director of athletics on July 1, 2005, it is the experience, vision and work ethic of the 45-year-old Cobb that has steered the Mountaineers to new heights.

Cobb is married to the former Lindsay Brecher, who was an all-ACC goalkeeper for NCSU women’s soccer from 1988-90 and serves as an assistant coach for Appalachian’s women’s soccer program. The Cobbs have a 15-year-old son, Harrison, and a 12-year-old daughter, Branan.

2014 APPLACHIAN STATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF

Bill Dicus Head Coach Campbell University 22ND season

The 2013-14 season marks Bill Dicus’ 22nd year at Appalachian State University and his 20th at the helm of the men’s golf program. The 2012-13 campaign was a breakout season for the Mountaineers, as the squad wrapped up a fourth-place finish at the Southern Conference Tournament. The fourth-place finish would be the first time since 2001 Appalachian found itself in the top five. Dicus’ squad earned eight top-10 finishes during the season, highlightd by the spectacular play of his athletes at the Telich Sun Life Financial/CSU Invitation wit a 306-305-281=892. That play carried over to the spring, when the Mountaineers recorded its season-low tournament score of 862 (287-281-294) at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational, just one week before the Southern Conference Tournament. Along with the great team play, several individuals left their mark on the program’s history as well as with the SoCon and other tournaments throughout the year. Casey Komline earned all-conference honors, while taking home a team-best six top-20 finishes in 2012-13. He is currently ranked first with the lowest career stroke average at 74.00 with 69 total rounds played. He had a round of 67 at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational that would also put him on the all-time list in that category. In the 2012-13 season, Komline shot a team-best 73.33 average with 2200 strokes over 30 rounds. With a young squad in 2012-13, Dicus’ team surpassed its modest expectations in what was thought to be a rebuilding year. In April, then-freshman Caleb Keck matched Komline with a round of 67 to make the all-time list and also notched a tournament title at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational. Keck won by one stroke to win at the event, while Komline finished tied for 13th. That tournament was ASU’s third top-10 finish in the spring as a mix of veterans and newcomers combined for a 296.83 stroke average on the season, which stands as the programs best stroke average. In 2009-10, the head coach saw his hard work pay off as senior Casey Johnson won the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate and later placed second at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. The senior graduated as one of the top golfers in the Southern Conference and one of the best in ASU history. Johnson graduated with four of the five lowest single-round scores in program history, as well as the best 54-hole tournament score (207). His stroke average is also the best in ASU history, at 74.79 spread over 112 rounds. (He narrowly edges Bern Gregory’s mark of 74.90.) The Apps placed in the top-10 in eight out of 11 tournaments for the season, including a thirdplace finish at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. ASU’s 298.79 team stroke average in 2009-10 stands as the second-best in program history, behind only 2000-01’s 298.12. In 2008, Dicus led the team to a season-best finish of fifth place at the North-South Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla. During his tenure with the men’s team, Appalachian has finished as high as fourth (twice in 2001 and 2013) in the Southern Conference, one of college golf’s most prestigious conferences. While at Appalachian, he also coached the women’s team for fifteen seasons. The Mountaineers placed second in the SoCon three times, placing behind only national-power Furman. Dicus also coached the league’s Freshman of the Year, Kelly Clements, in 1996. Dicus mentored two All Conference performers, Merryll McElwain (1994-96) and Brittany Winterton (1997). A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Dicus is a class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Associtation of America. He received a Bachelor of Science from Campbell University and has done post-graduate work at Appalachian. In addition to his duties at ASU, Dicus serves as a golf professional at Linville Ridge Country Club in Linville, N.C., one of the premier courses in North Carolina. The Dicus family is heavily involved in charity work throughout the High Country, as well. Dicus and his wife, Pepe, reside in Boone.

2014 APPLACHIAN STATE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S GOLF

Heather Brown

HEAD COACH APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY Sixth Season Heather Brown begins her sixth season at the helm of Appalachian State University women’s golf in 2014 after leading the team to unprecedented success over the past four seasons. Brown’s Mountaineers exceeded all expectations last season. Statistically, the 2012-13 season was their best. A trio of seniors led the way for most of the season as Lauren Smith, Yue Xu and Rumbidzai Masamvu each picked up tournament wins and took control of many of the school records. Appalachian quickly picked up two second-placed finishes, starting the spring season strong at the UD Hilton Head Invitational and the Benbow Invitational. Less than a month later, Brown’s team collected a title at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, which featured a 12-team field. For the third season in a row, the team has improved their seasonal team stroke average, surpassing the record made the ear before. The team surpassed their 313.41 stroke average by two points with a 311.52 through 25 rounds and 7788 strokes. Although the team finished eighth at the Southern Conference Tournament, they had six top-five finishes in tournament play and three sixth through 10th finishes. The team boasted their lowest team round of 292 at the Winthrop Intercollegiate, which is also a team record. Yue Xu, who had already earned the record for lowest individual single-season stroke average took complete control of the top three spots in the category and became the first all-Socon honoree since2006. In 2009-10, senior Brooke Dehart and four freshmen recorded a pair of second-place finishes, at the Campbell Fighting Camel Classic as well as the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. It marked the first time that the Apps placed second or better twice in a season since 2001-02. Newcomer Yue Xu then single-handedly rewrote the record books with her performance at the Southern Conference Tournament. The freshman became the first ASU woman to win the event, with a three-stroke victory, which earned her freshman all-SoCon honors. Under Brown’s tutelage, Xu set ASU’s single-round record (69) and 54-hole record (69-72-76=217) at the SoCon Championship and the single-season stroke average at 75.6 (previously 77.8). All told, Xu placed in the top-10 in all six spring tournaments in 2010. Brown’s solid recruiting efforts began to pay off with team depth, as fellow newcomers Rumbidzai Masamvu (79.3) and Kristina Boo (80.4) ranked second and third on the team in stroke average for the season. In her first season at the helm, Brown’s Mountaineers posted four top-10 team finishes, including fourth place as the host team at the Mimosa Hills Women’s Intercollegiate. She helped Kerri Dice and Brooke DeHart to breakout seasons in 2008-09 as the duo shaved a combined four strokes off their averages from the year before. Under Brown’s guidance, Appalachian has posted 10 rounds of 305 or lower. Prior to her arrival, ASU had reached that mark just eight times in program history. The 2014 season will be a rebuilding year for the Mountaineers, losing three of their top players. The starting lineup for the 2013-14 season will feature one sophomore and four freshmen. Sophomore Haley Zagoria will lead the Mountaineers being one of two Apps that have had collegiate tournament experience. Last season Zagoria participated in 13 rounds with 1048 strokes and a stroke average of 80.62. During the fall of 2013, she holds a 78.45 stroke average through 11 rounds and has a tournament championship. Brown was tabbed to lead the Appalachian State University women’s golf program on Friday, May 16, 2008. Brown, a 1989 Appalachian graduate, brings 18 years of professional golf experience with her back to the High Country. From 2002-08, the Madison, Conn. native headed up the Golf Juniors program at Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury, Conn., where she mentored dozens of young golfers, coached high school golfers and taught several hundred private lessons on an annual basis. Additionally, Brown helped lead the Danbury High School girl’s team to a state championship in 2004-05. Prior to her time in Danbury, Brown served as a golf professional throughout Connecticut at Tamarack Country Club from 1994-95 and 1998-2001, Rolling Hills Country Club from 1996-97, Cabarrus Country Club from 1992-93 and Klein’s Driving Range from 1995-96. As a collegiate, Brown played for ASU head coaches Tom Adams and Peter Rucker from 1984 to ‘88. She was both the captain and team MVP in 1988. Her former teammate, Angie Ridgeway, is the women’s golf coach at Southern Conference-rival Wofford College. Brown replaced Bill Dicus, who coached both the Mountaineer men’s and women’s programs the previous 13 years.

Who We Are Nestled in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Appalachian State University combines the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large research university. Known for its value and affordability, Appalachian enrolls more than 17,500 students and offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate majors. Small classes and close interactions between faculty and students create a strong sense of community, which has become an Appalachian hallmark.

Why Choose Appalachian? RELEVANT DEGREE PROGRAMS Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused green technology and the health sciences. QUALITY ACADEMICS In its 2013 “America’s Best Colleges Guide” report, U.S. News & World Report ranked Appalachian No. 3 among the top public master-degree granting universities in the South. Appalachian is also one of 136 institutions The Princeton Review recommends in its “Best in the Southeast” section of its website feature “2013 Best Colleges: Region by Region.” For the profile, students called Appalachian “truly a teaching university,” and added that the administration and faculty “pride themselves on being available to students.” VALUE AND AFFORDABILITY Appalachian consistently is named a best value by Forbes, The Princeton Review, Consumer’s Digest and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine for providing a high quality education at the lowest cost to students. Committed to making higher education affordable for every N.C. student, Appalachian offers the ACCESS scholarship program, which has supported students from the state’s lowest-income families by offering a debt-free, four-year university education. The university also offers a textbook rental program that saves a student hundreds of dollars.

ENGAGED STUDENTS Since 2008, $12.7 million in volunteer value has been provided to regional non-profits by student volunteers through the ACT program (Appalachian and the Community Together). Their deep commitment to serving the community has been recognized by the President’s Higher Education Honor Roll and the Carnegie Foundation for the Engagement of Teaching. OUTSTANDING FACULTY Ninety-nine percent of Appalachian’s full-time faculty hold doctorate, first professional degree, or other terminal degrees. SMALL CLASSES, PERSONAL ATTENTION Personal attention from faculty is a hallmark of the Appalachian experience. Classes average 26 students. This close-knit “community of learners” contributes to Appalachian having a freshman-to-sophomore retention rate of 87.6 percent. CONTRIBUTORS TO KNOWLEDGE Appalachian encourages students to participate in undergraduate research alongside their professors and showcase this work at regional, national and international conferences. In 2013, the highly competitive National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) selected 29 Appalachian students to present their abstracts in La Crosse, Wis. Appalachian has participated in the conference since 1994.

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE CAMPUS Appalachian was included in The Princeton Review’s 2013 “Guide to 322 Green Colleges” as one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible campuses. In 2012, Appalachian climbed to No. 10 in SIERRA magazine’s annual ranking of the nation’s “Coolest Schools.” The university has a STARS Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS). Boone, North Carolina Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
