Season Preview After finishing the 2013-14 season at 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers went on to place fourth at the SoCon Championships. The Apps saw Dominic Parisi and Dylan Cottrell win their respective weight classes at 125 and 149-pounds, respectively, earning spots at the 2014 NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. Appalachian returns both of its NCAA Qualifiers in Parisi and Cottrell for the 2014-15 season where they will look to build on its successes last season and advance even further this time around. Zack Strickland is another Mountaineer to keep and eye on. Strickland was a 2013 NCAA Qualifier at the 165-weight class but has decided to cut down to 157 for the upcoming season where head coach JohnMark Bentley believes he will be competitive at the conference and national level.

#allforAPP

125 The Mountaineers have one of their most seasoned veterans returning at the 125 weight class in three-year starter Dominic Parisi. Parisi is a two-time national qualifier, and has been to the round of 12 at the NCAA Championships. As a team leader and captain, Parisi brings a wealth of experience to a team that will be looking for him to lead them throughout the season. Bentley believes Parisi only gets better as the season goes on and wrestles his best at the end of the year when it matters most. Backing up Parisi is true-freshman Jacob Grigg. Grigg is an extremely talented wrestler coming out of high school where he was a two-time N.C. State Champion and All-American. Bentley has confidence in Grigg stepping in if Parisi has to miss a match.

Also returning to Bentley’s squad is heavyweight Denzel Dejournette. Dejournette returns as a team captain who is primed to have a breakout season after an impressive campaign a year ago. Bentley enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Mountaineers with an overall record of 45-40-1. Assistant coach Matt Fisk returns for his fifth year as a part of the Mountaineer coaching staff. Appalachian added Frank Hickman as an assistant coach. Hickman was a standout wrestler for Bloomsburg University and spent last season as an assistant coach for the Compound Wrestling Club. The Mountaineers are set to be highly competitive in several weight classes and contenders in the Southern Conference as well as at the national Level.

133 Probable starter at the 133 weight class is going to be redshirt-sophomore Vito Pasone. Pasone has been behind Parisi at 125 in previous years but is now moving up. Bentley believes although a little under-sized, Pasone will be competitive because of the experience he gained last season. Challenging Pasone for the spot will be a pair of freshmen, Payton Shuford and Demetreus Kostis. 141 True-freshman Michael Longo will look to headline the 141 spot. Longo was a high school All-American and top100 recruit in the nation. Bentley says the Mountaineers are fortunate to be able to bring a wrestler of his caliber into the program and expects him to be competitive right away. Backing him up will either be Javon Johnson who saw some mat time last season or Kostis if he is unble to crack the 133 lineup spot.

Season Preview

149 Highligting this class is No. 10 nationally ranked redshirtsophmore Dylan Cottrell. Cottrell, a team captain, was a Southern Conference Champion last season and starts the year ranked highly at the 149 weight class. He comes into the season with a chip on his shoulder after last season’s national tournament, where he felt he under-achieved. Cottrell has put in the off-season work and is ready to make some noise in the upcoming season. 157 Zack Strickland a two-year returning starter decided during the off season to cut down into the 157 class from 165, where he was a national qualifier in 2013. Bentley believes that Strickland will be a force to be reckoned with at 157 and will form a good one-two punch with him and Cottrell back-toback. Fighting for the spot to back him up are two freshmen, Dain Steffany and Drake Patrum.

him into the lineup. 184 The Mountaineers will start senior Nick Vetell who is a returning starter from last season. Bentley credits Vetell with lots of growth in the off season and expects him to be in contention for a conference championship in his senior season. 197 Tyler Radford will reclaim his starting role at 197 after injurying his ankle last season. The redshirt-sophomore has improved a lot of his weaknesses and is expected to vie for a conference championship. HWT Redshirt-sophmore Denzel Dejournette had an oustanding season last year with several quality wins, including a regular season win over the eventual SoCon champion. Dejournette is a team captain and will lead the team from the heavyweight spot. Bentley is expecting big things from the North Carolina native in his second campaign at Appalachian. Final Word from Coach Bentley “Overall, our team outlook with all the pieces that we have in place, will allow us to compete for a conference championship in the SoCon. We have a really good lineup of starting guys and some talented young guys that we are excited about.”

165 The front runner for the starting 165 spot is redshirt-freshman Nick Kee. Kee is coming off of a great redshirt year after winning several open tournaments and placing at the redshirt national open championship. Kee competed most of his matches at 174 last season, but is dropping down to 165 where coach Bentley is confident that he will compete for a Southern Conference championship. David Peters-Logue and Colton Jackson are two true-freashmen who are looking to see mat time behind Kee. 174 Forrest Przybysz is going to fill the starting role at 174 as a redshirt-freshman. Przybysz was a high school All-American and three-time state champion. He attended Naval Academy Prep School before redshirting his first season at Appalachian. The Mountaineer coaching staff is looking forward to getting

Educating Quality Citizens and Leaders Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Boone now attracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is one of the 17 institutions in the University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 26 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, who are leaders in communities in North Carolina and around the world. Appalachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to communities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused sustainable technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s best public universities in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 22 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 19 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recreational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges.

Athletics excellence More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at Appalachian State University, 10 for men and 10 for women. Appalachian was a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014 – one of 10 conferences that are members of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Nearly half of Appalachian’s student-athletes typically earned inclusion on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 grade-point average or higher while completing at least 24 hours in two semesters. SoCon success Before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014, the Mountaineers won 34 Southern Conference Commissioner’s cups for overall excellence in men’s athletics, with 2013-14 being its ninth-straight year to win. No other school claimed the Commissioner’s Cup more than five times since it was first awarded in 1970. While in the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers earned league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer, softball and men’s tennis. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007. • 96 – number of student-athletes earning Academic all-Conference honors • 42% – percentage of Appalachian student-athletes earning a place on the department’s Honor Roll, with a minimum GPA of 3.25 • 3.03 – student-athletes’ overall cumulative GPA following the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year • 13 of 20 – the number of varsity programs at Appalachian with multi-year APR scores that exceeded the national averages for their respective sports (beginning with the 2009-10 academic year and ending in 2012-13) athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of nondiscrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants. Appalachian STATE Athletics Diversity Statement Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

BOONE, NORTH CAROLINA Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
