ASU Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex
In 2011, Appalachian soccer begins its fourth season of play at the ASU Soccer Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Completed in 2008, the facility features two artificial turf fields as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The High Country Soccer Association (HCSA) Ted Mackorell Complex is located off of Brookshire Road, and is easily accessible from US-421. In addition to ASU Stadium, two other fields (one turf, one grass) provide local high school HCSA teams a chance to play soccer throughout the year. The stadium is complete with a modern press box and seating for up to 1,000 spectators. In 2010, a new addition was added to the complex, featuring locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams. Each locker room contains 30 lockers, showers, bathrooms, television and sound system. Additionally, the structure includes a concession stand and restrooms for the public.

Season Outlook Coming off an 8-8-3 season, Appalachian State men’s soccer is back on the field for another exciting season. The 2010 campaign saw the Apps advance to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals, and ASU hopes to improve on that success this year. Heading into 2011, the Mountaineers are looking forward to a competitive season and a chance at this year’s SoCon crown. For head coach Shaun Pendleton and assistant Matt Nelson, both entering their fourth seasons, this year’s squad could pan out to be their best at Appalachian. “Preseason has gone well,” reports Nelson. “Our guys understand concepts and are moving along quicker than in previous years. All of our games will be competitive this year, and we’ll focus on each match, one at a time.” Senior midfielder Ryan Duffy commands the Mountaineers as captain this season; however, the ASU coaches look to all of their players for leadership. “The way we see it, we’ll have 11 captains on the field at a time. They need to work together and direct each other if we’re going to win games.” In goal, the Mountaineers choose from a selection of three skilled keepers. Senior Collin Taylor is the most experienced, but both Danny Free and Paul West have the ability to compete for playing time. On defense, four starters return to compose the Apps’ most-experienced line. Mark Bridges, Lee Williams and Walker White join Duffy to make up a formidable Appalachian defense. Harrison Delbridge is back to contribute again this year, while newcomers Jackson Bentley, Emerson Harrison and Patrick Harrow add additional depth. In the midfield, ASU has its strongest set of veterans. Sean Dreybus, David Dodge, Bruno Mbamala and Lee Rutter anchor the Black and Gold at both ends of the pitch, while Costin Gregory, Kristian Lee-Him and Nelson Milsaint are positioning themselves for spots in the lineup.
6 | 2011 Appalachian State Men’s Soccer
With the departure of several starters, the Mountaineer front line will be limited in experience but not lacking in talent. Junior Nate Latigue and freshman Sekani Sinclair will see time at the position, while a handful of other newcomers are in the mix to play up front. In addition to a group of talented freshmen, the Apps welcome a pair of transfers to the team this year. Ryan Lavigne comes to Boone by way of Cincinnati, bringing experience playing in big games, and Josiah Trower has familiarity with the college game after playing two seasons at Louisburg College. While some coaches may find the task of managing 12 newcomers a daunting one, Appalachian’s coaches welcome the extra depth. “We’re excited about our new players,” explains Nelson. “They have incredible potential, and we have the chance to develop them and watch them grow. In addition, the young guys are here to push the older guys; the whole team knows that the players who produce in practice are the ones that get to play on game day.” Ultimately, the team has its eyes on its first SoCon Tournament title since 1990 and a berth in this year’s NCAA Championship. The Mountaineers have the honor of hosting the final rounds of the SoCon tournament on their home turf, as the semifinals and finals of this year’s event will take place at ASU Soccer Stadium on Nov. 11 and 13. “Our sights are set on winning the conference,” shares Nelson. “We need to stay healthy and focus on playing as a team so that our game is at its highest level for the tournament.” Southern Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Head Coach Shaun Pendleton
Shaun PENDLETON
Head Coach • Fourth Season Akron, 1985 346-77-18 (Career) • 26-24-4 (Appalachian)
Entering his fourth season at Appalachian State University, Shaun Pendleton is the 10th men’s soccer head coach in program history. In his first three seasons, Pendleton has recorded a 26-24-4 overall record at Appalachian, qualifying for the Southern Conference Tournament twice during that period. Pendleton led Appalachian to an 10-8 record in his first season and earned a SoCon tournament home game for the first time since 2004. The Mountaineers went 4-3 in league play, finishing tied for second in the regular season, ASU’s highest finish since 2002. The 2009 ASU team finished the year on a four-game winning streak, but its 3-4 conference record was one point shy of a place in the four-team playoff, and the squad wrapped the year at 8-8-1. Pendleton’s Mountaineers made their second post-season appearance in 2010 after recording a 4-2-1 conference slate to tie for second place. Appalachian won its first-round playoff game against Elon to earn the program’s first semifinal berth since 2006. After a heart-breaking overtime loss to eventual-champion UNCG, the Mountaineers wrapped the season with a 8-8-3 record. During Pendleton’s tenure, five Appalachian players have earned first-team all-conference honors, while three others have been named to the second team. Six Mountaineers have been selected to the all-freshman team, and a pair have been tabbed as alltournament players. The Sheffield, England native has compiled a 346-77-18 record in 22 seasons as a head coach, including two years at the University of Charleston (W. Va.) and 17 campaigns at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. His .805 career winning percentage is the best-ever for a Division II coach and ranks among the best 15 in NCAA history across all divisions. At Lynn, Pendleton compiled a 293-42-13 overall record and led the Fighting Knights to a pair of national championships. His first came after a 22-0-2 season to capture the NAIA crown in 1991, and in 2003, Lynn capped a 22-0-1 season with a 2-1 victory over Chico State to win the NCAA Division-II title.

As a player, Pendleton was a two-time all-America defender at the University of Akron in 1984 and ‘85. He also earned all-America scholar plaudits in 1985 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from Akron that same year. He was inducted into UA’s athletics Hall of Fame in 2004. Following his collegiate playing career, Pendleton went on to play four seasons in the American Indoor Soccer Association with the Columbus Capitals and the Memphis Storm, where he set a league record by playing in 177-conscutive matches. Assistant Coach Matt Nelson
Matt NELSON
Assistant Coach / Goalkeeper Coach • Fourth Season Lynn, 2000 90-44-21 (Career as Assistant) • 26-24-4 (Appalachian)
In 2011, Matt Nelson enters his fourth season as an assistant coach at Appalachian State. During his first season at ASU, Nelson coached freshman Collin Taylor to 2008 first-team all-conference goalkeeper honors and all-freshman accolades. Nelson helped the ASU defense lead the Southern Conference in fewest goals allowed and goals against average. In three years with the Mountaineers, Nelson’s keepers have racked up 15 total shutouts. Nelson’s collegiate career remains one of the finest in Lynn goalkeeping history. In 1998, he allowed just six goals with a goals-against average of .37, both program records. His career numbers include 59 games played (57 started), 5,023 minutes, 31 shutouts, 49 wins, 30 goals against, a .54 goals-against average, 134 saves, and a save percentage of .817; all career figures are second-best in Lynn history. Nelson was an NSCAA all-American and all-Region player in 1999. He was named to the NSCAA academic all-south region twice (1998, 99) and was a two-time all-Sunshine State Conference goalkeeper (1998, 99). After graduation, Nelson played professionally for the Cape Cod Crusaders of the USL Second Division and was an allleague selection. In 2001, he played for KilKenny City of the Irish Premier League before heading back to the USL, this time with the South Jersey Barons and then the Virginia Beach Mariners where he played until 2006. In his final season in 2006, Nelson was selected to the USL First Division All-Star team. In 2007, he was named to the USL all-Second Division second team after a successful season with the Harrisburg Islanders. As well as a successful professional career, Matt also brings five years of coaching experience to the program. While working with Virginia Wesleyan College as goalkeeper coach, Nelson helped the Marlins achieve two Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships and a record of 41-15-4 from 2003 to 2005. Nelson then joined William and Mary’s women’s program, notching a record of 23-5-13 as assistant coach in 2005 and 2006.

Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which enters its 91st season of intercollegiate competition in 2011, has become known as one of the nations’s leaders in emphasizing the development of student-athletes and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premiere conference in the Football Championship Subdivision since earning that classification in 1981. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896) , the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 RhodesScholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. The SoCon also sponsors two all-sports awards, the Commissioner’s Cup for men’s programs and the Germann Cup for women’s teams. In 2011, Appalachian won both cup for the eighth time, earning its 31st Commissioner’s Cup and its ninth Germann Cup. Appalachian remains the only SoCon program to sweep both awards in the same year, a feat it has accomplished eight times.

ASU Administration Charlie COBB
Debbie RICHARDSON
In his first six years at Appalachian State University, Director of Athletics Charlie Cobb has led the department to unparalleled success.
In 2011, Debbie Richardson begins her 16th year as Senior Woman Administrator at Appalachian State University. She joined the Mountaineer staff in August 1996 as an assistant athletics director and earned the title of Senior Associate Director in 2006.
Director of Athletics NC State, 1990 Seventh Year
The many achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during Cobb’s tenure include: • Three NCAA Division I football national championships and the first NCAA football titles ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. • Shattering football attendance records at Kidd Brewer Stadium. • Six-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships — recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. • Three Germann Cup championships — recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the SoCon. • Thirty-five percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25). However, the most notable of Cobb’s many achievements has been the addition of first-class facilities that will give Appalachian the opportunity to be successful across the athletics spectrum for years to come. Facility enhancements totaling $50 million were completed in 2009, headlined by the 120,000-square-foot Appalachian Athletics Center. The seven-story complex, located behind Kidd Brewer Stadium’s west stands, includes a strength and conditioning center, training facilities, academic study space and a computer lab for all ASU student-athletes. Cobb’s peers recognized him for his efforts when the National Collegiate Athletics Directors Association (NACDA) named him the NCAA Division I FCS Southeast Region Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in 2011. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations for seven years. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent six years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant executive director for the Atlanta Sports Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and handled all game and event operations for the Peach Bowl.
Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Auburn, 1975 16th Year
Richardson serves as administrator for seven men’s and women’s sports, including men’s soccer. As the senior woman administrator, she acts as spokesperson for the needs and interests of women within the athletics department, campus and community. In the Southern Conference, Richardson sits on the wrestling and television committees and is the current chair of the volleyball committee. Regionally, Richardson serves as the chair of the south region volleyball ranking committee, and, at the national level, she is entering her second year as a member of the NCAA Division I volleyball committee. Richardson came to Appalachian following five years as assistant athletics director at the University of Illinois. Previously, Richardson spent nine years at the University of South Florida, including seven seasons as head volleyball coach. While at USF, Richardson compiled a 180-117 record and earned three Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year awards while leading her team to four Sun Belt championships. A 1975 Auburn graduate, Richardson was a four-year starter for the Tigers during the AIAW-era. She earned a master’s degree in physical education from East Tennessee State in 1977.

Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A second-team all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship.

A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.
APPALACHIAN ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT

BOONE
NORTH CAROLINA Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life — that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
