Appalachian Wrestling Coaching Staff JohnMark Bentley Head Coach First Season North Carolina, 2001
JohnMark Bentley is in his first season as head coach after joining the program in 2006 as an assistant coach. A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Bentley brings with him vast experience as a coach and wrestler. Bentley was an assistant coach for two seasons at ASU before being named associate head coach in 2008. He has coached three Southern Conference champions at ASU, including Frank Celorrio last season and Scott Ervin, who won three-straight SoCon championships from 2006-08. Ervin graduated in 2008 as ASU’s career leader in wins with 114. At North Carolina, Bentley was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion and was twice named team MVP. He was the 2001 ACC Wrestler of the Year and a 2000 University Nationals Freestyle All-American. He ranks ninth in UNC single-season win percentage of .919, when he went 31-2 in 2000-01. He is sixth all-time with an .851 career winning percentage at Carolina and finished with 92 career wins. He was a three-year member of the UNC Student-Athletic Council and earned a degree in communications in 2001. In 2008 he earned a masters degree in school administration from ASU. He began his career as the top assistant at Davidson College in 2002-2003. From 2003-2006, he was head coach at Watauga High School in Boone, leading the Pioneers to a third-place finish at the North Carolina State Championships with three individual state titleists in 2006. A three-sport athlete at Avery High School in nearby Newland, N.C., Bentley was the second wrestler in North Carolina high school history to win four state championships. He finished his high school career with a perfect 144-0 record, capped by a National Championship in 1997. Bentley’s brother, Matthew, wrestled at Appalachian from 1992-96. He and his wife, Aaron, reside in Seven Devils, N.C.

Appalachian Wrestling Christian Sinnott Assistant Coach First Season Central Michigan, 2008
Christian Sinnott joins the ASU coaching staff this season after an outstanding four-year career wrestling at Central Michigan. Sinnott was a volunteer assistant coach at CMU in 2008-09, while also serving as the strength and conditioning coach for The Chippewas’ wrestling, football, baseball, gymnastics and field hockey programs. “I’m very excited about adding Christian to our staff here at ASU,” Bentley said. “I believe he will be a tremendous asset to our upper weight classes and his experience as a competitor and coach will help our program.” During his career on the mat at Central Michigan, Sinnott was a three-time NCAA qualifier, a two-time MidAmerican Conference champion and earned All-America honors as a senior. He ranks in the top-15 in school history in career winning percentage and helped lead Central Michigan to back-to-back top-10 national finishes in his junior and senior years in 2007 and 2008.
Kyle Jahn Assistant Coach First Season McKendree, 2009
Kyle Jahn joins the ASU coaching staff following an outstanding collegiate career at McKendree University. “I am excited to add Kyle to our staff here at ASU,” Bentley said. “He will be a great help to our light weights and he should be a great example for our guys as he will continue his own training in an attempt to make the US freestyle team.” Jahn was a three-time All-American for the Bearcats and won an NAIA championship in 2008 in the 141-pound weight class. He finished seventh at the 2009 United States National Freestyle championships at 132 pounds. Jahn is originally from Bolingbrook, Illi.

Appalachian Wrestling 2009-10 Season Outlook
With nine returning starters, including two NCAA Championship participants, Appalachian State University wrestling has lofty expectations for the 2009-10 season. The Mountaineers finished 2009 with a 7-16 overall record and went 2-3 in the Southern Conference, but finished third at the SoCon Championships. Along with the nine starters, first-year head coach JohnMark Bentley has a plethora of young talent at multiple weight classes which gives this team solid depth at every weight class, something which was missing the last few years. “One thing that we have this year that we might not have had in the past is that in every weight class we have guys pushing the starter,” Bentley said. “Some of are weight classes are just so close, we have talented kids and the depth is a good thing.” The 2009-10 squad features two key additions in coaches Kyle Jahn and Christian Sinnott. Jahn was a three-time All-American at NAIA McKendree and was a 2008 national champion. Jahn will coach the lightweights while Christian Sinnott will coach the upper weights. Sinnott was a three-time NCAA qualifer for Central Michigan and an all-American as a senior.” “Having a lightweight coach, a middleweight and an upperweight coach who are all active will make a difference in our program,” Bentley said. “I can already see a confidence boost in our lightweights and the same with our upperweights.”
125 Austin Annas finished last season as the starter, earning fourth place at the Southern Conference Championship. Weston Haney returns for his sophomore season while freshmen Brett Boston and Tony Gravely will also battle for the No. 1 spot. “Tony and Brett will both push for the starting position,” Bentley said. “Both had great high-school careers and I’m expecting a great competition out of those four guys.”
133 Senior Frank Celorrio returns after sweeping through the Southern Conference en route to his first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships. Redshirt freshman Jacob Earp earned all-America status this summer at the University Nationals and adds solid depth behind Celorrio. “Frank is a returning SoCon champion but he’s going to be pushed by two young guys in Earp and White,” Bentley said. “It will be a very competitive weight for us and we’re going to have some depth, which is good to have. 141 Sophomore Mike Kessler was one of just three Mountaineers to start every dual meet last season. He earned SoCon all-freshman honors and finished third at the SoCon Championships. Redshirt freshman Chris Collura and sophomore Kyle Benson will battle Kessler for the starting spot and give ASU another weight class with a lot of depth. “Mike has the upper hand for the starting position. He’s had a great preseason and is looking really tough in the practice room,” Bentley said. 149 Like Annas at 125, Savva Kostis took over the 157-pound weight class at the mid-point of last season, going 2-2 in conference action and taking third place at the SoCon Championships. High-school teammates Zack Mastro and Richie Dehnz will look to battle for that spot as well. “This is another weight where right now it is too close to call,” Bentley said. “Savva has the inside edge after starting last season.” 157 Chip Powell moved up to 157 at the halfway point of last season and went 9-5 at that weight class, going 3-1 in the SoCon and finishing third at the conference championships. “Chip has looked really tough this preseason,” Bentley said. “He had some ups and downs last season but I think 157 is a more natural weight for him and he’ll feel better and compete a lot better.” 165 As a true freshman last season, Kyle Blevins led the Mountaineers’ in wins with 24, on his way to earning SoCon all-freshman honors. Colt Howell, Travis Puckett and Robbie Wannenburg will all add depth behind Blevins. “Kyle had a great freshman year and has worked hard over the summer, “Bentley said. “He has the potential to be a multiple time all-American. He just has those kinds of tools.”

Appalachian Wrestling 174 Austin Trotman began last season 14-3 before enduring a season-ending injury at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Of the 14 wins, three came against ranked opponents and he was 8-0 in dual meets. An NCAA qualifier in the 2007-08 season, Trotman received a redshirt for last season and remains a sophomore this year. Freshmen, John Blakely, and John Weber will provide depth at 174. “Just like Blevins, he’s got great potential to be an all-American in the next couple years, including Austin Trotman this year,” Bentley said. 184 Two-year starter Dylan Temple returns for his junior season after finishing second on the team last season with 23 wins. After competing at 197 as a freshman, Temple will now compete at the same weight class for the second year in a row.
“I think its very important that Dylan is at the same weight for another year, I think he can manage his weight better,” Bentley said. “He’s had two solid seasons for us, the addition of Coach Sinnott is a big help for him. Hopefully we can get him a conference championship and to the national tournament.” 197 True freshman Paul Glover has the inside track on the starting position, while newcomers Jon Hartley and Justin Nagpal will provide depth. Brandon Brothers started the second-half of last season at heavyweight and will move down to a more natural 197 this season. “Paul was one of the nation’s top-ranked kids coming out of high school at 197,” Bentley said. “He’s going to be young but he competed at a high level in high school, so hopefully he can make the jump pretty easily.” 285 This is the only weight class where ASU does not return a wrestler that started at some point last season, but Ken Altarac and Brock Durfee are both talented freshmen who will make this a weight class with depth. “Altarac has the inside edge right now but Durfee is right there, those two will be battling it out,” Bentley said. “Both will probably see time this year and make it a solid weight class.”

Celorrio Competes in NCAA Championships The 2008-09 season was like a roller coaster for Frank Celorrio. He started out the season winning seven of his first 12 matches, however, due to an NCAA violation out of his control, had to forfeit all 12 of those matches. Following the forfeits, he lost three of his next four matches before putting together fourstraight wins. On Jan. 3 at the Lone Star Duals, Celorrio went 3-1 on the day and would not suffer a loss until Feb. 15, earning 12-straight wins in the process. During the streak, Celorrio won three matches by major decision and two by pins. He also defeated Eastern Michigan’s Sean Clair, who was ranked No. 26 in the country. The streak came to an end in his last match of the regular season against Liberty’s Christian Smith. Celorrio came back strong in the Southern Conference Tournament, defeating VMI’s Tyler Hutchens, 8-1, in the semifinals and dispatching Chattanooga’s Josh Statum, 7-1, to win the SoCon Championship at 133. With the championship, Celorrio automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Celorrio’s first trip to nationals was short lived, as he fell to Kent State’s Dan Mitcheff, 8-0, in the first round and Wyoming’s Cory Vom Baur, 6-0, in the first round of the wrestlebacks. Heading into his senior year Celorrio will be looking to join Scott Ervin as the only two-time NCAA qualifier in the last six years.

Appalachian Wrestling The Southern Conference
The Southern Conference, which enters its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, has become known as one of the nation’s leaders in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier conference in the Football Championship Subdivision since earning that classification in 1981. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes-Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, SC. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford. The SoCon also sponsors two all-sports awards, the Commissioner's Cup for men's programs and the Germann Cup for women's teams. In 2008, Appalachian claimed its 28th Commissioner’s Cup since 1972 and has won the Germann Cup eight times in school history. Appalachian is the only SoCon program to win both cups in the same year, a feat it has accomplished seven times.

Appalachian Wrestling Dr. Kenneth Peacock Chancellor Sixth Season
and taxation. He was promoted to Assistant Dean in 1987 and Associate Dean in 1989, before assuming the role of Dean in 1992. Prior to his arrival in Boone, he was a faculty member at the University of Virginia, from 1980-83, where he taught, primarily, taxation classes and served as faculty advisor for many student organizations. He also co-authored an Instructor’s Manual to accompany West’s Intermediate Accounting textbook and helped create an Investment and Tax Planning Seminar offered through UVA’s Division of Continuing Education. Upon receiving a B.S. in accounting from Mars Hill College in 1970, Chancellor Peacock worked for Price Waterhouse and Company in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, N.C., while teaching taxation classes on a part-time basis at WinstonSalem State University. In 1975, Dr. Peacock moved to Baton Rouge, La., where he earned Master’s (1977) and PhD. (1979) degrees in accounting from Louisiana State University. During his time at LSU, he helped develop a pair of training courses, funded and published by the Louisiana State Board of Regents for Higher Education, and taught throughout the state. An active member of the academic and local communities, Chancellor Peacock serves on the Boards of Directors of the Investment Advisory Committee for AACSB International, the Watauga Medical Center Foundation, and the Grandfather Home for Children. He is involved in numerous civic programs and activities. In 1995, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Peacock as one of just 25 North Carolinians to participate in the inaugural Leadership North Carolina program. Chancellor Peacock is married to the former Rosanne Barkley of Winston-Salem, N.C. They have two sons: Chris, 31, and Brian, 27.
A member of the Appalachian State University community the past 23 years, Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock is in his sixth year as ASU’s Chancellor in 2009-10. Dr. Peacock, who served as the University’s Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs during the 2003-04 academic year and was the Dean of Appalachian’s Walker College of Business from 1992-2003, assumed the office of Chancellor on July 1, 2004. During his 11-year tenure as Dean, Dr. Peacock introduced numerous initiatives that enhanced the college’s academic and financial stature. Among his many accomplishments as dean were securing a financial commitment from prominent businesswoman and civic leader Thelma C. Raley to name the building that currently houses the Walker College of Business and endowing a lecture series in honor of former State Treasurer Harlan E. Boyles. Dr. Peacock also developed an international program in partnership with Fudan University in Shanghai, China, to help students understand the challenges and opportunities of doing business in Asia. As the Walker College of Business Dean, he also established the Dean’s Council of Student Advisors and a Business Advisory Council, composed of 25 business leaders who meet once a semester to review programs and to anticipate the needs of the College. He guided the college to reaffirmation of accreditation by the Association to Advance College Schools of Business (AACSB International) in April, 1998. The AACSB’s Visitation Team awarded ASU’s Walker College of Business nine commendations of strengths and innovations during the reaffirmation. Chancellor Peacock arrived at Appalachian in 1983 as a faculty member in the Walker College of Business and began teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting
Educating North Carolina’s Citizens and Leaders Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Since that time, the area has attracted those seeking natural beauty, adventure and learning. Appalachian is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system. The university offers a challenging and stimulating learning experience for more than 16,600 students both on and off campus. Appalachian is considered a preeminent university combining the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large, research institution. It is particularly known for its research and outreach in health-related fields and the area of energy/environment/economics. Distinctively residential, the main campus encompasses 411 acres. It includes 19 academic buildings, 20 residence halls, four dining facilities and 11 recreational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City. Off-campus programs are offered in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges. The university is characterized by close collaboration between students and faculty, rigorous scholarship, and transformational co-curricular activities that develop graduates with real-world capabilities. Appalachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to communities, both locally and globally. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s
best public universities in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian supports a broad-based athletics program, featuring 10 men’s and 10 women’s intercollegiate teams. The Mountaineers hold NCAA Division I status and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1971. The Mountaineers have earned both the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup for overall excellence in men’s athletics 29 times since the award was established in 1979 and the Germann Cup, recognizing the top women’s program in the conference, six of the 18 years the award has been presented. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles – in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Since joining the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers have captured league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. Appalachian’s student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as on the playing field. In Spring 2009, 44 student-athletes made the Southern Conference’s academic all-conference team. To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average. One Mountaineer had a 4.0 GPA.

In his first four years at Appalachian State University, director of athletics Charlie Cobb has led the department to unparalleled success. The many achievements enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during the first 48 months of Cobb’s tenure include: • Three NCAA Division I football national championships — marking the first time that any program has ever won three- consecutive NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS — formerly Division I-AA) and the first NCAA football titles ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina at any level. • Shattering regular-season attendance records at “The Rock” with a school-record 28,227 fans per game piling into Kidd Brewer Stadium during the 2008 regular season — more than 140 percent of the stadium’s ‘08 seating capacity of 16,650. • A 298-percent increase in football season-ticket sales since his arrival in 2005. • Four-consecutive Commissioner’s Cup championships — recognizing the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference. • Two Germann Cup championships — recognizing the top overall women’s sports program in the Southern Conference. • 35 percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25). • Five teams (men’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field) earning public recognition awards, based on being among the nation’s top 10 percent in their respective sports based on Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. • The Yosef Club, which provides scholarships for student-athletes, raising nearly $2.5 million in 2008-09 — reaching the $2 million threshold for the secondstraight year time and up over $1.8 million from the year before Cobb’s arrival. • Appalachian’s athletics annual budget increasing from $7.5 million in Cobb’s first year to $11 million in 2009-10. Additionally, Cobb has spearheaded Appalachian’s $50 million facilities enhance-ment campaign, which will come to fruition this fall with the completion of the centerpiece of the campaign, the 120,000-square-foot Kidd Brewer Stadium Complex. The seven-story complex, located behind KBS’s west stands, includes new football offices and locker room, a strength and conditioning center, training facilities, academic study space and computer lab for all ASU student-athletes, as well as premium seating in the form of 600 club-level seats and 18 suites The facilities enhancements has also included other significant renovations to The Rock. A new ticket plaza, which serves as a grand entrance to the stadium, as well as ornamental

fencing that replaced the chain-link barriers that used to surround the stadium and field were completed before the 2007 season, while a 4,400-seat upper deck on the stadium’s east side and substantial upgrades to the east and south concourses were completed prior the ‘08 campaign. In addition to the renovations to Appalachian’s most visible athletics facility, the campaign has also produced new homes for Mountaineer baseball (Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium), softball (Sywassink/ Lloyd Family Stadium) and soccer (at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex), as well as the Apps’ first-ever indoor practice facility (Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility) and renovations to Varsity Gym that have upgraded the facility to a premier practice and competition venue for ASU basketball. Cobb was the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations for the seven years prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. During his tenure, NC State increased football season-ticket sales by 87 percent and men’s basketball season-ticket sales by 121 percent. The combined ticket revenues accounted for an annual increase of over 86 percent for Wolfpack athletics, generating more than $6 million for the department. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent six years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. As an assistant executive director for the Atlanta Sports Council and the Peach Bowl, he helped coordinate Atlanta’s bid for the 2002 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four and handled all game and event operations for the Peach Bowl. As sales manager for the Georgia Dome from 1994-97, Cobb helped procure events such as the Southeastern Conference football championship, the SEC and Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball tournaments, NCAA men’s basketball championship events, Georgia High School Association football playoffs, major concerts and other college and amateur sporting events. Cobb graduated with honors with a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A secondteam all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship. After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities, Cobb earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. Cobb is married to the former Lindsay Brecher, who was an all-ACC goalkeeper for NCSU women’s soccer from 1988-90. They have an 11-year-old son, Harrison, and a eight-year-old daughter, Branan.
