Cuba serves as an excellent example for a study on regionalist architecture, specifically to the type of buildings belonging to the Torrid Zone. The cultures that comprise this zone share similar qualities based on their climate, among other elements. Overall common attributes relating to Cuba tend to be building construction and infrastructure developments that take into consideration the hot and humid climate. In this regard, the architecture serves a pragmatic framework to truly be efficient and long lasting. Another factor is how the historical qualities tied to periods of colonial establishment and conquest have a direct relationship with speciality and program structure within buildings. Because of this postcolonial frame of mind, other cultural, societal and political then begin to tie into these architectural spaces. cuba is rich in these types of buildings, and serves as an excellent example of research behind Torrid Zone regionalism architecture.

MANI[FOLD]

Endless Corridor

The basis of this proyect stems form a desire to transplant the agency and action of actors within ficticious narratives in to architecture. For the purpose of this project, the labyrinth like qualities of the hotel in The Shining were analyzed to produce an architecture that responds to its particular sense of agency in a real life scenario.

Flow Dispersion

Extracting patterns of displacement along the city via an in depth analysis of movement, transportation and programmatic make-up of the former. This will give shape to a better understanding of what drives and generates movement along the city grid. The patterns as a result will express the amorphous nature of flow, displacement and circulation along urban spaces, revealing a new system of organization, or occupancy.

We then analyze the city space, mapping human activity and density via transportation and vehicular flow, displacement, programmatic composition of areas and historical, or monumental sites. The idea behind this is to understand the city’s growth via human occupation and flow through its spaces.

Intertwined Systems

Vertical and Residential Hybrid Hub

Following the logic of the cordyceps fungi, the project seeks to simulate a similar reconstruction and transformation in architecture. Though cordyceps can be fatal to its host, it also presents a tertiary condition. In this condition, though the insect is mummified, it still serves functions to its innate ecosystems and to the ensured survival of the fungi itself. Because of this, the building morphology and function depend on the methods used to unify two distinct systems together formally. This is represented by the residential and farming, where they each link into each other, and create a hybrid system both in terms of program, function and form. The diagrams outlining multiple facets and building components related to how, where and in what manner the residential program and the farming program meet. These elements feed into the building infrastructure, signaling out the circulation elements, entrances, and composition of the building interiors. Each diagram shows the intrinsic relationship of farming and dwelling program, which also connects with external elements, relating to growth, distribution and integration of vegetation. These elements then work in conjunction with the water and waste systems that run through the building.

Dot Circuit

In tune with the material qualities researched during phase two of the overall project scheme; the morphological and spatial components within the pavilion structure adhere to a set of parameters inspired by gradation of space, deformation of composition components and continuous concentric movement. In terms of layout and building orientation, phase one served as a guideline in terms of abstracted spatial configuration and formal juxtaposition; rather than being used as the building blocks of the general geometry in the pavilion. In unison, the application of movement and decay on the spatial qualities of the St. Paul Chapel, culminate in a series of various curvilinear tectonic components that gradually transform and deform as the approach the main axis of the pavilion.

[Pulpecat To Kchiechpecat]

Schenk Woodman Competition

THE RIVER RAN ABLAZE WITH SHIPS MANEUVERING THE DELAWARE’S FOLDS BY CANDLELIGHT. IT GAVE FORTUNES AND A TRUE STORY TO AMBITIOUS DREAMS, ALL WHILE BEING SILENTLY IGNORED AND CAGED BY THE ROARING GAZELLES OF THE MODERN AGE. THE WAVES WERE FORCED TO FLOW WEARILY. THE RAIN WAS POISONED BEFORE EMBARKMENT, IMPREGNATING PHILADELPHIAN’S WITH GUILT. PULPECAT TO KCHIECHPECAT GIVES VOICE TO THOSE WHO HEAR THE RIVER’S SILENT SHRIEKS. URBAN RAIN FINDS RENAISSANCE AT OUR SITE, WHICH COMMEMORATES WHAT PHILADELPHIA HAS ALWAYS DONE. WE KNOW OUR HEART BEATS IN UNISON WITH THE TIDES OF THE DELAWARE, AND NOW WE CELEBRATE OUR USE OF THE RIVER. COME, CLAIM THE GIFT OF UNSTAINED WATER, AND THE TRULY HUMAN EXPERIENCE OF LOVING THE GROUND WE COME FROM.

A Mask Through Time

Cavallin Harris Galleries Exhibition

The overall goal of the proyect was to test the qualities of an object or scenario in relation to hyper realistic elements. This relationship would serve to test not only perceptual and physical transformations of an already existing object, but give to to altering and inserting a narrative relating to the newfound item.

In this proyect the mask is a transformation of a crown. Because of this, it is meant for those that acquire transient power. The mask is used to hide birth defects within Dutch royalty, with each side corresponding to a potential emotion needed for expression. However, the mask still operates as a crown.

Y.E.S. Table

Showcase Space

The concept behind the table was to have a series of structural components that began to reveal emerging geometries as the shrink wrap tensed between them. These bases would serve as the platforms for the elective proyects, showcased in PENN’s Year End Show.
