The Task ! •
Contribute to making the West-Kruiskade a safer and more attractive area.
•
Increase the feeling of safety in the area.
•
Encourage passers-by to turn right.
•
Examine and challenge existing plans and programs.
•
Develop alternatives and/or suggestions to improve the area.
The Limitations and Conditions !
•
The Alliantie has intervened in the buildings, and will continue to do so. Greater focus is, at this point, required on open spaces and improving the area’s connections.
•
Limited budget; a lot has already been invested in the area.
•
The vision should benefit the community: from the residents to the Chinese tourist.
URBEGO was encouraged to be: •
Bold. Question the relevance and utility of current plans;
•
Creative. Explore various solutions, and how the West-Kruiskade can benefit from its urban surroundings at different scales;
•
Realistic. Ensure that strategies are feasible.

The Task (revisited) ! •
Contribute to making the West-Kruiskade a more attractive area.
•
Increase the feeling of safety in the area, including the safety index.
•
Promote connections and accessibility within the Oude Westen, as well as encourage passers-by to “turn right”.
•
Enhance existing plans and provide suggestions for future actions.
To improve and enhance the visibility, connectivity and dynamic of the WestKruiskade through low-cost design and better integration with the general area of Oude Westen, and the rest of the city, thereby also inspiring wider recognition.

Short-term
Provide [free] WiFi hotspots and seating places
in public spaces;
Design and position a flexible info point;
Use playful motifs for crossing areas.
Mid-term
Use colour to add vigour to public spaces- red carpet;
Remove fences at the entrance of the park;
Use blind facades and other redundant spaces for activities;
Reduce the width of roads and introduce bike lanes.

Maintain strategies and expand deeper into Oude Westen;
Develop skill-labs to encourage local innovation.
